The eight levels of Penguin Readers follow the Common European Framework of Reference for language learning (CEFR)。 Exercises at the back of each Reader help language learners to practise grammar, vocabulary, and key exam skills。 Before, during and after-reading questions test readers' story comprehension and develop vocabulary。

Boy In The Tower, a Level 2 Reader, is A1+ in the CEFR framework。 Sentences contain a maximum of two clauses, introducing the future tenses will and going to, present continuous for future meaning, and comparatives and superlatives。 It is well supported by illustrations, which appear on most pages。

Ade lives in a tower block in London。 One day, something bad happens to Ade's mum。 After that, she stays in her bedroom all the time and sleeps。 Then buildings start falling down in the night, and there are strange plants on the street。 What will happen to Ade and his friend Gaia?

This was on my daughters list of recommended books to read from her teacher。 Thought I’d read it first so we could talk about it together。 Was such a brilliant book, a real page turner。 Now I just need to persuade my daughter to read it!

A veritable page turner。 I couldn't stop reading, I was hooked at every moment。 This book was written beautifully, somehow writing from the perspective of a child in a way that doesn't put off the adult reader。 The only bad thing I have to say is that the ending was kind of a cop out, but I don't mind。 The characters are easy to fall in love with, which is a must in my opinion。 The story is so imaginative, really different from anything else I've read。 I didn't find it to be overly predictable, A veritable page turner。 I couldn't stop reading, I was hooked at every moment。 This book was written beautifully, somehow writing from the perspective of a child in a way that doesn't put off the adult reader。 The only bad thing I have to say is that the ending was kind of a cop out, but I don't mind。 The characters are easy to fall in love with, which is a must in my opinion。 The story is so imaginative, really different from anything else I've read。 I didn't find it to be overly predictable, and the twists in the story always had me genuinely intrigued about what would happen next。 I wholeheartedly and unreservedly give this book 5 stars! 。。。more

9/10 , it was a cute little inspiring book , one that was much better than I expected ! It was also an easy read with small chapters , which also made it harder to put down。 This book has great characters but not only that , it also spreads awareness to agrophobia and is written really well to include that。

seeing the life through the eyes of a young boy ade and all he has to go through, with his mother refusing to leave the house and sleeping almost all the time so he doesn’t get to see her the vast majority of the time。 the characters were explored amazingly and i felt i could connect with them so well。 i finished this book in the space of 2 days because i just couldn’t put it down i was always wondering what would happen next。 and i loved the plot and the suspense it left after each page。 i defi seeing the life through the eyes of a young boy ade and all he has to go through, with his mother refusing to leave the house and sleeping almost all the time so he doesn’t get to see her the vast majority of the time。 the characters were explored amazingly and i felt i could connect with them so well。 i finished this book in the space of 2 days because i just couldn’t put it down i was always wondering what would happen next。 and i loved the plot and the suspense it left after each page。 i definitely recommend this book as a thriller with a mix of adventure。 。。。more

I am working with a Year 6 class at school at the moment and they were reading this book。 This is a lovely story about how London gets overrun by plants。。。。 but a few people manage to survive。 It details the relationships beautifully and I genuinely cared about the characters。

Living inside the mind of Ade as you read his story, I really felt his determined optimism to keep going wain as the situation for he and his mother became more desperate。 He is alone in the last standing building in London, save for his mother who has not left her bedroom in weeks or indeed the flat for much longer。 His life was difficult already, but now he can’t leave like everyone else。 Luckily a couple of older people in the flats downstairs are left behind as well and so the grim situation Living inside the mind of Ade as you read his story, I really felt his determined optimism to keep going wain as the situation for he and his mother became more desperate。 He is alone in the last standing building in London, save for his mother who has not left her bedroom in weeks or indeed the flat for much longer。 His life was difficult already, but now he can’t leave like everyone else。 Luckily a couple of older people in the flats downstairs are left behind as well and so the grim situation lightens, and becomes a team survival challenge。This felt a little slow to me and a bit desperate to be completely enjoyable for children in year 5-8 but still a lovely story。 。。。more

We read this book as a class and I think that it it definitely deserves more attention。 The way it has you feeling for the characters and wanting to help them is remarkable! This book is a great book for people who like "apocalypse" style stories and I would definitely recommend this to anyone from the age of 10-14。 We read this book as a class and I think that it it definitely deserves more attention。 The way it has you feeling for the characters and wanting to help them is remarkable! My daughter wanted me to read this book after her teacher read it to her class in school and they were all completely gripped。 I read it in a day, it was a gripping and easy read and she was delighted that we could then discuss it。 It provoked some interesting chats! Lots in here that kids can connect with in regard to friendship, loyalty, helping one another out etc。 It had echoes of the current pandemic for me too, a mysterious and seemingly invisible enemy (at first) taking people at random, My daughter wanted me to read this book after her teacher read it to her class in school and they were all completely gripped。 I read it in a day, it was a gripping and easy read and she was delighted that we could then discuss it。 It provoked some interesting chats! I like that Ade and Gaia like each other probably and they live on the same floor (17th) and across each other。。。it's a nice book and also Michael is Ade's friend and Ade's real name is Adeola, sounds girlish but doesn't mean that Ade is a girl, Ade I a boy。 That's it thank me later。 I like that Ade and Gaia like each other probably and they live on the same floor (17th) and across each other。。。it's a nice book and also Michael is Ade's friend and Ade's real name is Adeola, sounds girlish but doesn't mean that Ade is a girl, Ade I a boy。 That's it thank me later。 。。。more

Quite a dark and foreboding tale of a troubled lad with a troubled home life。 His mother has some mental health issues brought on by some incidents (nothing is delved into too explicitly so it's child-friendly just pretty deep!) And this is all exacerbated by the invasion of plants from space。 I'd put this in the survivial genre, it mostly tells the tale of how he and other survive in a world (or city) with no-one and nothing left in it。 A lot of the early part of the book is told from the persp Quite a dark and foreboding tale of a troubled lad with a troubled home life。 His mother has some mental health issues brought on by some incidents (nothing is delved into too explicitly so it's child-friendly just pretty deep!) A buddy read with my daughter。 A dystopian story with lots to chat about together。 It definitely kept us engaged and hooked in。

This book was good for the year 8 me, it introduced me to adventure, or any non-romantic novels and I quite enjoyed it。 That being said, I wouldn’t reread。 But it is quite enjoyable 👌🏾👏🏾

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved this story about Ade, his Mum and the blutchers。 A story about the kindness of strangers when things go wrong & the importance of true friendships to keep you going。 Thank goodness for Obi & Dory!

Wow。 This was a book and a half! It was so perfectly complex, without being too overwhelming。 Such a creative and original story。 It is written in such a clever way and Polly often withholds important details that as a reader you can't help but feel like 'omg I need to read the next page'。 I still have so many questions unanswered but I think this just adds to the beauty of the novel。 I would highly recommend this book! There's a little story that led me to reading this book which I thought I'd share because I think it just highlights why as teachers we can have a big impact on young minds。 So。。。 I have been working with some Y6 pupils on their reading comprehension this term (1:1s)。 In my first week (6th Oct) I was there just to meet the teacher and get to know some of the children, one girl read a section of her book 'The Boy in the Tower' and that was that。 The following weeks we had structured comprehension tasks to complete (this is a set programme, not planned by me)。 Then, 4 weeks later we had an opportunity to read her personal choice again and I noticed that she hadn't progressed much in the same book。 So, we had a talk about it and how she was feeling about reading in general, the book itself etc。 She had chosen this book on the first day of school and really wanted to get through it because it was the first 'chunky' book she had enjoyed, but she just didn't understand everything she was reading/couldn't remember important details to be able to access the rest of the story。 It was clear that she felt very disheartened so I asked if it would help if she had someone to talk to about certain things in the book and she said yes。 I told her that I would read it too and her whole face lit up。 For the following week, I had made a timeline of events, explanations of difficult vocabulary, details about the 'Bluchers' and main characters。 Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to talk this through with her because our session got cancelled but I explained what I had done and left the information sheets with her。 The week after that, you wouldn't have known it was the same pupil, her whole attitude to reading had changed! She gave me a detailed retelling of the story so far (something she had previously struggled with) and was so much more positive about her own reading ability。 She also shared that she had bought a book at the school book fair and her Dad had bought her one too and she was excited to start reading at home。 This was such an amazing feeling because I didn't ask her about these things, she just wanted to share them with me! We also completed another comprehension assessment and she had made so much progress in being able to pick out the key details and infer things from the text。 Coincidence?I would never have picked up this book on my own and I am so glad that this pupil gave me a reason to because I loved it!! 。。。more
