Summary

For the past two centuries, these delightful stories, gathered together and written down by brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, have entertained and frightened children and adults alike。 The lives of Tom Thumb, Cinderella, Rumplestiltskin and the Frog Prince form part of our common heritage: they stimulate the imagination and the heart, and linger at the back of our minds for a lifetime。 They are funny, disturbing, wise and compassionate。 They speak of joy and terror, happiness and revenge, love and violence。

Arthur Rackham’s masterly illustrations have all been hand-coloured by Barbara Frith, one of Britain’s leading colourists。

Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautifully bound gift editions of much loved classic titles。 Bound in real cloth, printed on high quality paper, and featuring ribbon markers and gilt edges, Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure。

If you have ever wanted to know the true origins of modern fairy tales then this book is for you。 The whimsical and sometimes dark stories are filled with morals, both good and bad。 The language in the stories are antiquated but it fits the time period that these were written and is probably better that it isn't updated for modern times。 Some stories are miles better than others and while it is interesting to look at, overall nothing is specatcular but it is worth a look just for the history of If you have ever wanted to know the true origins of modern fairy tales then this book is for you。 The whimsical and sometimes dark stories are filled with morals, both good and bad。 The language in the stories are antiquated but it fits the time period that these were written and is probably better that it isn't updated for modern times。 Some stories are miles better than others and while it is interesting to look at, overall nothing is specatcular but it is worth a look just for the history of it。 。。。more

So many fairy tales I've never heard of。 Some were similar to other stories, others took me completely by surprise。 Children should hear and read more of these original tales than the ones worn out by Disney。 So many fairy tales I've never heard of。 Some were similar to other stories, others took me completely by surprise。 Children should hear and read more of these original tales than the ones worn out by Disney。 。。。more

Some of the stories were entertaining, but others were sexist。

This piece of historical folk tales as recorded by the brothers Grimm has had an understandable and remarkable influence on western fiction and continues to do so。 The authors' willingness to tell stories which evolved from one another with similar beginnings, middles or ends provides a lovely lesson in an expanded version of the "telephone game," begging us to use our own imaginations to guess the circumstances that may have led to the evolution of said tales。 This piece of historical folk tales as recorded by the brothers Grimm has had an understandable and remarkable influence on western fiction and continues to do so。 The authors' willingness to tell stories which evolved from one another with similar beginnings, middles or ends provides a lovely lesson in an expanded version of the "telephone game," begging us to use our own imaginations to guess the circumstances that may have led to the evolution of said tales。 。。。more

A look at the original version of many classic fairy tales, revealing the weirdness and, at times, real savage streak of some of these tales。 Enjoyable, especially in terms of finding the differences between the Disney and Grimm versions。

3。5 rounded up。 Each tale here has a different illustrator, which can be a bit grating as their styles are too different and some aren't that good。 I liked Sheilah Beckett and Gordon Laite's illustration for their respective tales best。 3。5 rounded up。 Each tale here has a different illustrator, which can be a bit grating as their styles are too different and some aren't that good。 I liked Sheilah Beckett and Gordon Laite's illustration for their respective tales best。 。。。more

I’m not sure if it was the poor editing or the actual content, but by the end of the book we were just trying to get done。 I was so thankful when it was over!

I devoured fairy tales when I was a child。 I used to read them under the covers with a flashlight。 The cover of my book and the illustrations by Fritz Kredel were exactly the same as this edition (originally published in 1945, reprinted in 1977) that I happily found as an adult。 It will always be the best Grimms' version for me because of those childhood memories and the wonderful illustrations。 Many of these tales are indeed "grim," definitely not the sanitized Disney versions。 I don't remember I devoured fairy tales when I was a child。 I used to read them under the covers with a flashlight。 The cover of my book and the illustrations by Fritz Kredel were exactly the same as this edition (originally published in 1945, reprinted in 1977) that I happily found as an adult。 It will always be the best Grimms' version for me because of those childhood memories and the wonderful illustrations。 Many of these tales are indeed "grim," definitely not the sanitized Disney versions。 I don't remember any of them bothering me as a child, but today many of them have been challenged。 I worked in a school where a parent pulled her child from a class because the teacher read the "original" version of Cinderella to the class。 She also demanded that the Cinderella books be pulled from the library。 Thankfully, the principal stood up for the teacher and the library, and the books remained on the library shelves。 A well-known child psychologist, Bruno Bettelheim, contended in his book, The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales, that fairy tales empower children, showing them that the youngest and the innocent always prevail against evil and adversity。 Children are tougher than we think, but parents will probably want to screen this version for children up to age eight or nine。 。。。more

This is a fascinating read in terms of being a classic historical piece that passes on fairy tales from a time past in their original grotesque forms。 My favourite piece by far is 'the story of the youth who went forth to learn what fear was' (i think it's sometimes called the youth who could not shudder, but not in the version I read), which tells the story of a young lad who has never experienced fear and wanted desperately to feel something he'd never felt before, following various characters This is a fascinating read in terms of being a classic historical piece that passes on fairy tales from a time past in their original grotesque forms。 My favourite piece by far is 'the story of the youth who went forth to learn what fear was' (i think it's sometimes called the youth who could not shudder, but not in the version I read), which tells the story of a young lad who has never experienced fear and wanted desperately to feel something he'd never felt before, following various characters' recommendations on how to do so based on what they themselves find frightening。Some stories were interesting, others I found less so。 I'm prevented from giving this a 5 star because whilst it serves its purpose of preserving old fairy tales in their original forms well and I enjoyed many stories (and I'm a sucker for gruesome/weird/creepy stuff), there are also several stories that are just reiterations of previous tales in the book with slight variations, like it was the same story told to the Grimm brothers by two different people who had heard it slightly differently。 Which I'm fairly sure is exactly what happened according my edition's forward。 。。。more

Fun fact: I don't think that Grimm's original fairy tales were written for kids, given their disturbing level of gore。 But lucky we, with Walt Disney and people who have decided tp re-write the stories and give them happy endings :) Fun fact: I don't think that Grimm's original fairy tales were written for kids, given their disturbing level of gore。 But lucky we, with Walt Disney and people who have decided tp re-write the stories and give them happy endings :) 。。。more

PLEASE do not read this whole thing start to finish like a novel。 Big mistake my friend。 It totally ruined it for me。 I hated every second of reading this after the first 5 or so stories (there are 55) because if we’re being honest, they are basically all the same。 There would probably be hoards of people that would gasp in horror at that opinion but they can suck it。 We all know it’s true。 To be clear, the stories aren’t bad! I found it really interesting reading the originals of the stories I knew and a handful of the others had me quite intrigued。 I just wish that I had left it on my shelf to occasionally peruse instead of having it sit on my bedside table glaring at me to finish it in a linear fashion。 So while I had a terrible experience reading most of this, I understand that that is entirely my fault and realistically I know that if I hadn’t been a dumby dumb dumb I would settle at 3 stars。 So there you go。 Also, is it just me or are the stories nowhere near as gruesome as people make them out to be? Like I still wouldn’t read these to children, but mostly because I wouldn’t want them to think that a man can just point at a woman and have her as his wife like a toddler choosing a carnival prize while she gets no say whatsoever, because goddamn we’re there a lot of stories with that exact situation played off as the happy ending for everyone。 。。。more

A tiny book with very short (3-5 page) versions of the stories。 There are weird ones you've never heard of, and familiar ones that don't turn out as you expect。 In the Frog Prince, the girl doesn't kiss the frog - the princess marries the frog against her will, then smashes him against the wall in disgust。 It's only then that the frog transforms into royalty。 The queen tries to kill Snow White three times, first with a bodice then a poison comb, before she tries the apple。 I never realised that A tiny book with very short (3-5 page) versions of the stories。 There are weird ones you've never heard of, and familiar ones that don't turn out as you expect。 In the Frog Prince, the girl doesn't kiss the frog - the princess marries the frog against her will, then smashes him against the wall in disgust。 It's only then that the frog transforms into royalty。 The queen tries to kill Snow White three times, first with a bodice then a poison comb, before she tries the apple。 I never realised that Rapunzel was the name of a plant, also called rampion, kind of a radish but used for its leaves which were like spinach apparently。 So 'Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!' could also be 'radish, radish, let down your hair。。。'The weird ones include those that could turn into an interesting story (like The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Goose Girl, The Six Swans)。Then there are the really weird ones, like The Straw, the Coal and the Bean, or The Mouse, the Bird, and the Sausage, the moral of which seems to be 'never send a sausage to do a bird's work。' 。。。more

I thought all the stories would be dark, but a lot of them ended up having happy endings。 It wasn’t as dark as I had imagined。 Some stories were way too short。 The full cast audio was fun but this collection isn’t something to binge。 Some of the stories were meh, so it’s difficult to listen to one after another like that。 3/5。

These are not the Disney versions of classic fairy tales。 These are the original unabridged Grimm Brothers fairy tales。 I have read a few of these before so I knew how delightfully dark, violent, and messed up they are。 These stories are supposed to teach lessons, but wow I was surprised with how many evil step mothers there are in these stories。 They get a seriously bad representation。 LOL。The narrators all do a wonderful job engaging the listener。
