This is the graphic novel version of Tolkien's The Hobbit, or There and Back Again。 I read it only days after completing the original text and so really noticed both how faithful it was to the former story and how much of Tolkien's original quotes were included。It feels like a far daintier and quieter tale than the original, despite this faithfulness。 It is always interesting, in any retelling, to see what an individual chose to deliver as the most important features, and discovering this was wh This is the graphic novel version of Tolkien's The Hobbit, or There and Back Again。 I read it only days after completing the original text and so really noticed both how faithful it was to the former story and how much of Tolkien's original quotes were included。It feels like a far daintier and quieter tale than the original, despite this faithfulness。 It is always interesting, in any retelling, to see what an individual chose to deliver as the most important features, and discovering this was what I most enjoyed here。The movie adaptations are even bleaker and more despairing than the book, but this feels more hopeful and full of light than either of them。 I already knew I was going to love the bones of the story but I love the direction this took and how the focus remained on Bilbo throughout, rather than the feats of the other characters。The artwork from David Wenzel took an early pastoral focus and beautiful landscapes continued throughout。 The colour scheme remained muted and I thought it the perfect match for the tone of the book。 I enjoyed viewing the illustrations as much as I did reading the story。 。。。more

I didn't like the story on this one。。。 I'd never read nor seen it, and I just didn't enjoy the words。 I'm very grateful that a lot of the tedious description that Tolkien is partial to was negated to be replaced by wonderful illustrations。 The art style and the way this entire graphic novel was laid out was INCREDIBLE and it's what's actually saving the rating。 A wonderful job with something a book I didn't enjoy much!

It’s obviously not the same as reading the novel, but the main skeleton of the story is there, and the pictures are incredible! I think this would be a great introduction to “The Hobbit” for a kid that is maybe not old or mature enough to tackle the book yet。

I enjoy the story of the hobbit but the adaption was hard to follow; was very text heavy, the speech bubbles were sometimes hard to follow and I personally didn’t like the art style that much。

Mikie

Charming comic for the avid Tolkien fan! It’s quite abridged, so l believe you get the most out of it if you already know the story。 The illustrations takes a little getting used to, but they fit the story and theme well。

Gabriel

One of my favourite books。 Has very good descriptive language to really allow you to imagine the story。 Plays along nicely with the film。 Story really has a lot of plot twists etc and can help the suspense of the story。

This was a fun read even though it hasn't been that long since I read the story in full。 It has cleverly been shortened by Charles Dixon so it would be great for kids。 I won't say what age because it depends on the child and their reading ability and maturity level。 This graphic novel was fun to read even if I did have to pull out my reading glasses。 I think this would be a great gift for kids that love adventure and fantasy。 The only thing that gave me pause was when Beorn, the man that can tur This was a fun read even though it hasn't been that long since I read the story in full。 It has cleverly been shortened by Charles Dixon so it would be great for kids。 I won't say what age because it depends on the child and their reading ability and maturity level。 This graphic novel was fun to read even if I did have to pull out my reading glasses。 I think this would be a great gift for kids that love adventure and fantasy。 The only thing that gave me pause was when Beorn, the man that can turn into a bear, told them where he had gone during the night。 He went to the area where the group had to climb up trees to get away from the wolves and goblins。 The trees were set on fire but they were finally rescued by huge eagles that carried them far away to safety。 Beorn went back to that area to see if their story was really true。 He saw the burnt trees and caught a goblin and wolf who told further verified the story the wizard had told。 When the hobbit asked what happened to the Goblin and wolf he showed them the wolf hide hung up on a tree and the head of the goblin on a spike in the ground。 There was no blood shown but they are clearly dead。 Also, I wouldn't give this to a child that is afraid of spiders, especially big, nasty, mean spiders。 。。。more

My love for this story started when I was still a child。 I read the graphic novel again several years later。 The movie was in front of my eyes。 A fantasy world could mean a very exciting world even if there are not just positive things there。 It is another world where you can lose yourself for a little time。 (: The reason why I love reading since I was a kid。 Why I love stories and writing down new and new ideas。 Why I love creating things (novels, short stories, drawings, or programs)。 Everythi My love for this story started when I was still a child。 I read the graphic novel again several years later。 The movie was in front of my eyes。 A fantasy world could mean a very exciting world even if there are not just positive things there。 It is another world where you can lose yourself for a little time。 (: The reason why I love reading since I was a kid。 Why I love stories and writing down new and new ideas。 Why I love creating things (novels, short stories, drawings, or programs)。 Everything is connected to each other in some ways。I missed Leonidas and the love between Kili and the fairy。 But still, my favorite dwarfs are still Kili, Fili, and Thorin! 。。。more
