Summary

A teen girl disappears from her small town deep in the bayou, where magic festers beneath the surface of the swamp like water rot, in this chilling debut supernatural thriller for fans of Natasha Preston, Karen McManus, and Rory Power。

La Cachette, Louisiana, is the worst place to be if you have something to hide。

This tiny town, where seventeen-year-old Grey spends her summers, is the self-proclaimed Psychic Capital of the World--and the place where Elora Pellerin, Grey's best friend, disappeared six months earlier。

Grey can't believe that Elora vanished into thin air any more than she can believe that nobody in a town full of psychics knows what happened。 But as she digs into the night that Elora went missing, she begins to realize that everybody in town is hiding something--her grandmother Honey; her childhood crush Hart; and even her late mother, whose secrets continue to call to Grey from beyond the grave。

When a mysterious stranger emerges from the bayou--a stormy-eyed boy with links to Elora and the town's bloody history--Grey realizes that La Cachette's past is far more present and dangerous than she'd ever understood。 Suddenly, she doesn't know who she can trust。 In a town where secrets lurk just below the surface, and where a murderer is on the loose, nobody can be presumed innocent--and La Cachette's dark and shallow lies may just rip the town apart。

This was a fast read。 Kept me on the edge and I wasn’t able to put it down。 Loved the characters and omg the twist at the ending。 I did not guess that at all。 A must read

Overall this book was very entertaining, especially the last 75 pages or so which were so crazy and chaotic, I couldn’t put it down until I finished。 Each page I turned I had a different theory on what was gonna happen or “who did it”, it was giving me whiplash (in a good/exciting way lol)。 The only reason I didn’t give this five stars is because it did start out on the slower side, and I feel like the magic/psychic elements were a tad bit over the top, could have been more subtle。 But overall I Overall this book was very entertaining, especially the last 75 pages or so which were so crazy and chaotic, I couldn’t put it down until I finished。 Each page I turned I had a different theory on what was gonna happen or “who did it”, it was giving me whiplash (in a good/exciting way lol)。 The only reason I didn’t give this five stars is because it did start out on the slower side, and I feel like the magic/psychic elements were a tad bit over the top, could have been more subtle。 But overall I really enjoyed this book。BONUS: just discovered it was the debut book of an author from Tulsa, where I live! Now it makes sense how I got an autographed copy! 。。。more

The atmospheric writing in this book is exquisite。 Ginny Myers Sain has wields a deft hand at crafting place, and the specifics of bayou folklore make this mystery all the more appealing。 This is the kind of book to keep you up at night flipping pages。 Mystery, murder, and a magic wrapped up in a Cajun-spiced bow。 I couldn't put it down。 The atmospheric writing in this book is exquisite。 Ginny Myers Sain has wields a deft hand at crafting place, and the specifics of bayou folklore make this mystery all the more appealing。 This is the kind of book to keep you up at night flipping pages。 Mystery, murder, and a magic wrapped up in a Cajun-spiced bow。 I couldn't put it down。 。。。more

Wow, this book was SO GOOD! It was a genre-bending mix of YA/fantasy/thriller/romance that was so unique。 The fantasy elements were so creative。 The Louisiana bayou setting and the author's description of it was so perfect and set the ideal spooky scene。 I literally felt like I could see, taste, and smell the bayou based on the author's descriptions。 The story kept me guessing the entire time。 I just can't get over that this was the author's debut book! One of my favorites of the year, for sure。 Wow, this book was SO GOOD! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I wish there was more magic and less teenage angst。 And 100 less pages。 The book really didn’t need to be so long。

I was surprised how much I liked this one! It was creepy and eerie and really held my attention。 There are a couple points I take issue with regarding the resolution, but I won't spoil them here in case any of my friends read it。 I was surprised how much I liked this one! great book! wow!!! I had so much fun reading this one。

Just way too slow。 The pacing was awful。 Basically the main character “Grey” walks around talking to the same three characters over and over about what happened to their friend who disappeared。 That’s the whole book。I think the ending would’ve been more exciting if I had cared the whole way through。 But I definitely didn’t。 Bleach。

Creepy mystery, red herrings, weird happenings。。。Rory Power-esque。

I like it, but I wanted to love it。 From the beginning it seemed so magical and intriguing, but then it kind of got weird and uncomfortable。 There was a very unlikable character (I don't want to spoil things)。。。this person just all around creeped me out and it was justified throughout the book。 That left a bad taste in my mouth。 I did like the gifts the characters had。 I thought that was neat。 I think a lot of people would really enjoy it who may not be as easily triggered by toxic males as me。 I like it, but I wanted to love it。 From the beginning it seemed so magical and intriguing, but then it kind of got weird and uncomfortable。 There was a very unlikable character (I don't want to spoil things)。。。this person just all around creeped me out and it was justified throughout the book。 That left a bad taste in my mouth。 I did like the gifts the characters had。 I thought that was neat。 I think a lot of people would really enjoy it who may not be as easily triggered by toxic males as me。 。。。more

I was really excited to read this but I was pretty disappointed。 The book is SO much longer than it needed to be。 I felt I was reading for hours with close to zero useful information。 Characters repeat their some thoughts over and over。 I frequently felt like “yes we knew this, now move on”。 You could probably read the last 2 chapters and learn everything you need to know。 The story was good, but we just needed more scattered throughout the book。 Good luck!

I picked up Dark and Shallow Lies in the bookshop based on the gorgeous cover but I didn't know a lot about it, which as it turns out was a good thing because it took me by surprise! This was such a good book, just what I wanted。 One of the best debut novels, it was amazing。 I loved the story, it was really unique and well written。 I liked how well the author did with world-building, and building the characters。I liked all the characters they were unique in their own ways, and I fell in love with them。 It was perfectly spine-chilling, and the supernatural aspect was just what I needed。 I loved the setting, I think it added to the scare factor rather well。It left me in a litt This was such a good book, just what I wanted。 One of the best debut novels, it was amazing。 I loved the story, it was really unique and well written。 I liked how well the author did with world-building, and building the characters。I liked all the characters they were unique in their own ways, and I fell in love with them。 It was perfectly spine-chilling, and the supernatural aspect was just what I needed。 I loved the setting, I think it added to the scare factor rather well。It left me in a little bit of a shock, but in a good way。 I'll admit I didn't have the highest expectations with this book, but the author really surprised me。 It got better and better as I read on, like one of those books you cannot put down。 I loved Grey as the main character also。And the spirituality, tarot cards, all that was such an interesting thing to read。 Overall such a good book, loved it。 。。。more

I was initially attracted to the entire idea of magic in the bayou, and for most of the book I was still intrigued by it。 The ending was a nice twist, and wrapped up fairly nice, but it wasn't anything spectacular。 It was a decent weekend read, I would recommend it to teenage readers。 I was initially attracted to the entire idea of magic in the bayou, and for most of the book I was still intrigued by it。 The ending was a nice twist, and wrapped up fairly nice, but it wasn't anything spectacular。 It was a decent weekend read, I would recommend it to teenage readers。 。。。more

Dark and Shallow Lies has an extremely atmospheric background that you can hear and smell throughout the book。 The frogs, the mosquitos, rushing water, the sounds of the bayou become a not so quiet character that breathes over your neck as you read this。 The smell of mud and pervasive mildew, rotted wood, and hot summer nights。 I could hardly put this down! Dark and Shallow Lies was eerie and atmospheric and very much a page turner—even though I ended up doing most of my reading via audiobook (because *gestures at my life*)。This is my favourite kind of thriller (which is not usually my genre), where there’s speculative elements that make it easier to get me invested。 I loved the supernatural elements at play in this book, but it was the characters that really sealed the deal。 The layered and complicated relationships made the central mystery so much more compelling。My only caveat was I felt a lot of the final climactic reveals came out a little too hurriedly, in too much of “aha!” spiel。 (view spoiler)[If you have to try and reason in-text why your protagonist keeps asking “why?” to get the answers—and gets them—it feels a bit like a cop-out was made to evade something that required more effort 🤷🏻‍♀️ (hide spoiler)]Overall though, an enjoyable read! 。。。more
