Summary

A powerful, vibrantly illustrated story about the first day of school--and two sisters on one's first day of hijab--by Olympic medalist and social justice activist Ibtihaj Muhammad。

With her new backpack and light-up shoes, Faizah knows the first day of school is going to be special。 It's the start of a brand new year and, best of all, it's her older sister Asiya's first day of hijab--a hijab of beautiful blue fabric, like the ocean waving to the sky。 But not everyone sees hijab as beautiful, and in the face of hurtful, confusing words, Faizah will find new ways to be strong。

Paired with Hatem Aly's beautiful, whimsical art, Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad and Morris Award finalist S。K。 Ali bring readers an uplifting, universal story of new experiences, the unbreakable bond between siblings, and of being proud of who you are。

Beautiful book with a touching story, but wasn't very accessible for my preschooler。 I wanted to include this in our preschool clothing unit and I'm glad I did because exposure is important, but it doesn't have a lot of re-readability for us。 But me and my 2。5yo are probably not the target audience! So please check this book out for yourself, I think it's a lovely description of what it means to wear hijab。 Beautiful book with a touching story, but wasn't very accessible for my preschooler。 I wanted to include this in our preschool clothing unit and I'm glad I did because exposure is important, but it doesn't have a lot of re-readability for us。 But me and my 2。5yo are probably not the target audience! This story is about a an older sister through a younger sisters perspective。 Faizah is excited for school and thinks her sister looks so beautiful in her blue hijab。 Unfortunately, the other children at school are not nice about it。 Faizah talks about the beauty of the hijab and its importance。

Very sweet story about sisters and wearing a hijab, perfect for a child starting to wear one at school or for a religious studies class on why hijabs are worn。 Beautiful illustrations compliment very poetic language。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Told from the younger sister's POV, this book celebrates the beauty of the Hijab, both in looks as well as culturally。 It shows us how it is seen in the eyes of the little girl with her older sister, picking it out for the first day of school and the excitement that entails。 It also shows how she sees others' reactions to it, in a school that does not understand the culture or the meaning。 It reminds us to watch what we say about things we don't understand and that if we just got to know a perso Told from the younger sister's POV, this book celebrates the beauty of the Hijab, both in looks as well as culturally。 It shows us how it is seen in the eyes of the little girl with her older sister, picking it out for the first day of school and the excitement that entails。 It also shows how she sees others' reactions to it, in a school that does not understand the culture or the meaning。 It reminds us to watch what we say about things we don't understand and that if we just got to know a person and their culture, we would see the beauty in it as the main character does。 One of my favorite parts is what the Mother says about how when people say negative things, "Don't carry around the hurtful words others say。 Drop them。 They are not yours to keep。"Genre: Traditional Literature 。。。more

Genre: Realistic Fiction Grade Level: K-2I loved this book, as well as the lesson! I loved the family dynamic shown in this book。 The mother was encouraging and always had advice, while the little sister was very excited and helped her sister throughout the day。 I think this would be a great book to have in my classroom because students could see themselves represented in the girls and it also shows good metaphors!

The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family Ibtihaj Muhammad Ibtihaj Muhammad's book, The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family, illustrated by Hatem Aly, is a beautiful story about a young girl, Faizah, amazed by her sister Asiya because it was her first day wearing a hijab。 Asiya wears this to school and Faizah notices other kids making fun of her。 This upsets Faizah however, she realizes now her sister has more beauty and strength than ever before。 In this book, it contains images in The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family Ibtihaj Muhammad Ibtihaj Muhammad's book, The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family, illustrated by Hatem Aly, is a beautiful story about a young girl, Faizah, amazed by her sister Asiya because it was her first day wearing a hijab。 Asiya wears this to school and Faizah notices other kids making fun of her。 This upsets Faizah however, she realizes now her sister has more beauty and strength than ever before。 In this book, it contains images in every page, it's almost like each page is its own story。 The illustrations express every scene of this book and shows how each character was feeling with the style and choice of images。 The story was extremely heartfelt and really emphasized the importance of family。 It would be a very beneficial book for young children to read because it can teach that although others are different from one another, you should always be proud of who you are。 I believe this is a very beautiful lesson every single child should be taught at a young age。 。。。more

Beautiful story and illustrations with a heart warming note from the author at the back。 The author is the only US Olympian to compete wearing a hijab。 This story tells of her pride in wearing this symbol of her faith。

The Proudest Blue is a book by Ibtihaj Muhammad who is a female Olympic medalist who wears a hijab “head scarf”。 The story follows a Muslim girl who wears a head scarf and goes to school。 Friends at her school make fun of her。 She does not seem to be bothered as she remembers her mom’s wise words。 A great book to use in the classroom as it teaches children about a different culture。 It is also a great read to teach children about acceptance。 I recommend this book。

I will admit that I have always had confused feelings about girls wearing a hijab。 Someone did bring up a good point when they told me that a nun's uniform is more restrictive。 I like that this book tells the other side of the story。 It shows that women can be proud to wear the hijab, even if society does not always see it that way。 I will admit that I have always had confused feelings about girls wearing a hijab。 Someone did bring up a good point when they told me that a nun's uniform is more restrictive。 I like that this book tells the other side of the story。 It shows that women can be proud to wear the hijab, even if society does not always see it that way。 。。。more

A beautiful inclusive story about two sisters, wearing a hijab and the pride that goes with it。 A great story to talk about different faiths, tolerance, acceptance and the importance of being kind to one another。 One can talk about bullying and why the boy's behaviour is wrong。 A beautiful inclusive story about two sisters, wearing a hijab and the pride that goes with it。 A great story to talk about different faiths, tolerance, acceptance and the importance of being kind to one another。 One can talk about bullying and why the boy's behaviour is wrong。 。。。more

A wonderfully powerful story written by Ibtihaj Muhammad, based on her own experiences from childhood。 The illustrations and the beautiful presentation of the story make it very easy to read and to follow。 The story allows young readers to begin thinking about the Muslim faith。 The Proudest Blue is an important story to include on our bookshelves。
