Summary

In this powerful and exciting fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, humans and the shape-shifting Others will see whether they can live side by side。。。without destroying one another。

There are ghost towns in the world—places where the humans were annihilated in retaliation for the slaughter of the shape-shifting Others。

One of those places is Bennett, a town at the northern end of the Elder Hills—a town surrounded by the wild country。 Now efforts are being made to resettle Bennett as a community where humans and Others live and work together。 A young female police officer has been hired as the deputy to a Wolfgard sheriff。 A deadly type of Other wants to run a human-style saloon。 And a couple with four foster children—one of whom is a blood prophet—hope to find acceptance。

But as they reopen the stores and the professional offices and start to make lives for themselves, the town of Bennett attracts the attention of other humans looking for profit。 And the arrival of the Blackstone Clan, outlaws and gamblers all, will uncover secrets…or bury them。

This is the only one of the "World of the Others" books I haven't really liked。 It was still fun to read, but by overlaying the timeline with a previous book, a lot of tension was lost。 We were in a different part of the world where characters were still being affected by what was happening elsewhere- but since I'd read the earlier book, I knew what was happening elsewhere was going to turn out fine。 So attempting to build tension when your reader already knows the outcome fell flat。The rest of This is the only one of the "World of the Others" books I haven't really liked。 It was still fun to read, but by overlaying the timeline with a previous book, a lot of tension was lost。 We were in a different part of the world where characters were still being affected by what was happening elsewhere- but since I'd read the earlier book, I knew what was happening elsewhere was going to turn out fine。 So attempting to build tension when your reader already knows the outcome fell flat。The rest of the story was good。 It didn't feel as richly developed as previous installments of the series, but was still enjoyable。 。。。more

I think I’m finally done with this series。 While I still think the world building is kind of cool, there’s some really messed up gender stereotyping and so much use of sexual assault as a plot point, and it’s not challenged in any way。 It’s been that way throughout, but in earlier books, Meg’s particular backstory had it make a bit more sense。 In this series, all the “good” young women are naive innocents, and anyone who dares to be interested in sex is brutally assaulted and murdered, except th I think I’m finally done with this series。 While I still think the world building is kind of cool, there’s some really messed up gender stereotyping and so much use of sexual assault as a plot point, and it’s not challenged in any way。 It’s been that way throughout, but in earlier books, Meg’s particular backstory had it make a bit more sense。 In this series, all the “good” young women are naive innocents, and anyone who dares to be interested in sex is brutally assaulted and murdered, except the one instance of an older woman in this book having a decent hook up。 But, even in that, she feels the need to hide it from the delicate young women in town。 What I essentially got from the treatment of Abigail and Dina was that anyone woman who was even a bit of a bitch deserved the worst kind of brutality, while the “good” women (Barb and Candice) needed to be protected to the point of oppressiveness。 Milder criticism, but still annoying, for a series that’s relatively modern (cell phones, Internet, etc。), it’s never been adequately explained why women’s roles still seem to be stuck in the 1950’s。One plus: Harvesters are super cool 。。。more

Audible version。 Excellent narration。 1 this book reads like a fever dream star。 😵‍💫I DNF this book (2019) when it was originally released。 This was my second attempt at reading it。 Took three days to get through this asinine book & it was an endlessly frustrating read。 It was plagued by sloppy plotting。 Illogical character behavior & thought processes on all sides。 An excruciatingly uninteresting story & cast of characters。 Ugh 😩 & the multitude of irrelevant POVs were just tiresome。 The author Audible version。 Excellent narration。 1 this book reads like a fever dream star。 😵‍💫I DNF this book (2019) when it was originally released。 This was my second attempt at reading it。 Took three days to get through this asinine book & it was an endlessly frustrating read。 It was plagued by sloppy plotting。 Illogical character behavior & thought processes on all sides。 An excruciatingly uninteresting story & cast of characters。 Ugh 😩 & the multitude of irrelevant POVs were just tiresome。 The author’s writing lacked shades of gray, every character was firmly in the black or white lane。 This one dimensional issue isn’t a new development but in previous books it was offset by interesting characters, entertaining interactions & decent story telling。 This time the story left me with a feeling of distaste。 Oh & the speciesism was real people。 I will not be continuing this series。 _______________________________________Note to self: RESIST THE FOMO Jeanny。 。。。more

I probably should have been leaving more detailed reviews for the books in this amazing world。 I could go on and on and I have no doubt other reviews have provided some details as to the overreaching story as well as the story of each book。 All I'll say is that it's a unique world with amazing characters and the age-old tale of greed and taking people at face value (or appearance)。 The characters are fresh and engaging with an excellent blending of intense drama and humor。 I just fall into these I probably should have been leaving more detailed reviews for the books in this amazing world。 I could go on and on and I have no doubt other reviews have provided some details as to the overreaching story as well as the story of each book。 All I'll say is that it's a unique world with amazing characters and the age-old tale of greed and taking people at face value (or appearance)。 The characters are fresh and engaging with an excellent blending of intense drama and humor。 I just fall into these books。 I know authors seem to know when to end a series or world。 I was happy to see there's another book coming out next year。 This is one world where I could read a dozen more books。 。。。more

So there is definitely a formula here, but apparently I am 100% here for it。The bad guys are delightfully bad。 The good guys are earnest。 Gender roles and relationships。。。well, what comes to mind is "AND YOU KNEW WHO YOU WERE THEN, GIRLS WERE GIRLS AND MEN WERE MEN"with some shocking violence as well, mostly experienced by those who deserve it。Honestly, I think it's ok if I don't interrogate my pleasure in reading these books too terribly much。 I spent my formative years reading Robert Heinlein, So there is definitely a formula here, but apparently I am 100% here for it。The bad guys are delightfully bad。 The good guys are earnest。 Gender roles and relationships。。。well, what comes to mind is "AND YOU KNEW WHO YOU WERE THEN, GIRLS WERE GIRLS AND MEN WERE MEN"with some shocking violence as well, mostly experienced by those who deserve it。Honestly, I think it's ok if I don't interrogate my pleasure in reading these books too terribly much。 I spent my formative years reading Robert Heinlein, satisfying in many similar ways, but much more horrifying in others。 Yikes。 At least consent totally matters in Bishop's world。 。。。more

I read this before and didn't remember, but when I got about chapter 5 or 10 I remembered。 Familiar as the other Others book, nothing novel。 A lot of loss in this one, unfortunately。I do wish there would be more distinct/concrete growth/resolution in the Other characters in the series and that all the female characters weren't either vapid or sweetheart innocents。 I read this before and didn't remember, but when I got about chapter 5 or 10 I remembered。 Familiar as the other Others book, nothing novel。 A lot of loss in this one, unfortunately。I do wish there would be more distinct/concrete growth/resolution in the Other characters in the series and that all the female characters weren't either vapid or sweetheart innocents。 。。。more

I usually really love Anne Bishop but this one not so much。 Interesting story but I found it difficult to read。 It jumped about from character to character and seems to lack depth。 I really liked the overall story idea but I had trouble keeping focused on the story and understanding why the characters made the decisions they did。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Another great book in a wonderful series。 My only complaint is about Abigail。 She's written as a deceptive person and the other characters treat her as one, but I never saw it。 She'd been victimized since birth, got away from her abusive family and his away。 But once that's revealed her husband leaves her with very little explanation other than she'd lied。 I didn't like the way her story played out。 Another great book in a wonderful series。 My only complaint is about Abigail。 She's written as a deceptive person and the other characters treat her as one, but I never saw it。 She'd been victimized since birth, got away from her abusive family and his away。 But once that's revealed her husband leaves her with very little explanation other than she'd lied。 I didn't like the way her story played out。 。。。more

If you cannot stop reading Anne Bishop you will devour this like I did even though, like the last bunches of her books, NOTHING really happens, there is a danger, it is expected, it happens, mostly things are fine, sometimes the others kill or threaten to kill some people who deserve it and everyone acts like it is a shocking surprise but it is not, and somehow you still cannot stop reading。 These are not good books。 But they are undeniably addictive!
