Summary

The most famous of all vampire stories, Dracula remains a compelling read, rattling along at break-neck speed, a true page-turner。 Here is a new edition of one of the great horror stories in English literature, the novel that spawned a myth and a proliferation of vampire tales in film, television, graphic novels, cartoons, and teen fiction, including the current craze revolving around the Twilight and True Blood series。 The volume includes a lively and fascinating introduction by Roger Luckhurst that considers the Gothic genre and vampire legend, discusses the vampire tale as sexual allegory, and outlines the social and cultural contexts that feed into the novel, including the New Woman, new technology, race, immigration, and religion。 In addition, Luckhurst provides comprehensive explanatory notes that flesh out vampire mythology and historical allusions, plus an appendix featuring Stoker's short story, "Dracula's Guest," an early draft or abandoned chapter that was not published as part of the novel。 Also included are a chronology of Bram Stoker's life and a timeline of vampire literature before Dracula

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe。 Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more。

This shot higher on my to-read list after finishing Frankenstein last year。 I was shocked how different that story was from what I expected to be the "classic Frankenstein" myth。 In reality I'd been influenced more by Hollywood than by Shelley。I felt something similar when reading Dracula now。 Once again I found out how little I knew about the "classic Dracula" story。 But here was something I expected even less: modern portrayals actually get pretty close?Hear me out: Dracula is basically one of This shot higher on my to-read list after finishing Frankenstein last year。 I was shocked how different that story was from what I expected to be the "classic Frankenstein" myth。 In reality I'd been influenced more by Hollywood than by Shelley。I felt something similar when reading Dracula now。 Once again I found out how little I knew about the "classic Dracula" story。 But here was something I expected even less: modern portrayals actually get pretty close?Hear me out: Dracula is basically one of the trashy action blockbusters that gets made year after year。 We have:1。 A villain who is so evil that he's almost comical2。 Loveable characters taking on the big baddie, including:3。 A paranormal investigator looking out for us4。 A woman dying as the monster's first victim5。 Romance subplot6。 A heist7。 Gory fight scenes8。 Haunted houses9。 A Texan insisting that rifles are the best vampire hunting weapons10。 Horseback pursuit across the countrysideMy best point of reference was the 2004 "Van Helsing" movie starring Hugh Jackman。 I'd always assumed that it might be partially inspired by a character or two, but would be completely unrelated to the story。 Having now read the source material, it actually has a pretty uncanny resemblance to Stoker's story。 。。。more

3 STARS I want you to believe。。。to believe in things that you cannot。This was a re-read for me。 I wanted to refresh my memory after reading Mimi Matthews recent book, John Eyre: A Tale of Darkness and Shadow, since there were elements from the story that she'd included。 Now I know that this is classic piece of gothic literature, and I'm not rating it critically。 I am no literary scholar, and my rating is solely based on my reaction to the book。 I think that at the time it was written, it had 3 STARS I want you to believe。。。to believe in things that you cannot。This was a re-read for me。 I wanted to refresh my memory after reading Mimi Matthews recent book, John Eyre: A Tale of Darkness and Shadow, since there were elements from the story that she'd included。 Now I know that this is classic piece of gothic literature, and I'm not rating it critically。 I am no literary scholar, and my rating is solely based on my reaction to the book。 I think that at the time it was written, it had it's appeal。 However, it is not my favorite gothic piece。 I find it a bit cumbersome to get through, as much of the story is told as journal entries。 I did like the change of character POV, but I felt like there was quite a lot of subterfuge thrown in that didn't need to be there。 I also felt like the ending was a little anti-climactic。 I would have liked a better fight on the side of the vampires。 They were just too easy to kill。 And he didn't sufficiently address the issue of Mina's health at the end。 The reader just has to make assumptions there。 All in all, it was an interesting story。 Definitely a chiller for the time period it was written in。 。。。more

It was a lot fun to finally learn the origin story of Dracula。 Even though I already knew the basics, there were still some surprises in there, and nothing in my opinion beats that classic gothic atmosphere, especially in spooky season。 That being said, there was no need for it to be nearly as long; same story could have been told in half the pages, maybe less。 Because of that, there were a lot of times where the story dragged and was really hard to get through。 Still, I'm glad I finally got aro It was a lot fun to finally learn the origin story of Dracula。 Even though I already knew the basics, there were still some surprises in there, and nothing in my opinion beats that classic gothic atmosphere, especially in spooky season。 That being said, there was no need for it to be nearly as long; same story could have been told in half the pages, maybe less。 Because of that, there were a lot of times where the story dragged and was really hard to get through。 Still, I'm glad I finally got around to checking out this classic。 。。。more

This book was interesting。 I loved the plot, the ideas and the writing。 An incredible amount of it felt so incredibly real。But still it took me a month to finish。 And I don’t know why。 It had a slow pacing at some points, and the language was older, but I might just have been bored。 And I don’t know why, because I love the story。 Conclusion: a very good book, but slow burn and a bit oddly written。 Still definitely worth a read tho。

I forgot how rambling parts of this novel were。 While Stoker had a large part in building the foundation of vampire novels and gothic fiction, there are definitely other gothic novels I enjoy a lot more。 An important read for anyone who is a fan of vampire and/or gothic fiction。Simon Vance does a really good job with the audiobook narration。

This is a classic that o had not read。 It was our Book Club’s pick for October。 I listened to it and loved the actors that read the parts。 It made it very enjoyable。 Our Ballet Company is doing Dracula as their season opener。 Very excited to see it after listening to this book。

Overall a very good book but the first 2/3rds REALLY REALLY carried it。 The third act felt rushed and very anticlimatic compared to the horror and atmosphere that the first two acts created。

What I expected- Vampires - Ferocious fights- Draculas' origin story- Terror! What I get- A sprinkle of fangs and pale skin - Stabs here and there- A criminal profiling of Dracula's child mind- Mina getting mansplained (but at least everyone knows she's the MVP)Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, the different POVs gave the reading some spice and kept me engaged。 The end was very abrupt, but I didn't mind。 What I expected- Vampires - Ferocious fights- Draculas' origin story- Terror! What I get- A sprinkle of fangs and pale skin - Stabs here and there- A criminal profiling of Dracula's child mind- Mina getting mansplained (but at least everyone knows she's the MVP)Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, the different POVs gave the reading some spice and kept me engaged。 The end was very abrupt, but I didn't mind。 。。。more

Very traumatic-Dramatic!!!, no much Dracula, and if Lucy was So sick。 Why they did not take her to the Hospital? But no。。。 they keep her at the mad house。 They did two blood trafutions like it is not a big deal。 Poor Lucy!!!。 They were mad themselves。 🤣

Klaas Van Gend

Slow compared to modern day vampire stories。 But the grandfather of all modern spooky stories is still a decent story!

Beth

I struggled with the epistolary format。 Really would have preferred a different novel structure。。。

Dracula is a story about an English lawyer who travels to foreign land, Dracula's Castle in Transylvania, to finish a real estate deal。 The lawyer ends up fearing for his life after learning the truth about Dracula and escapes the castle, one thing leads to another and Dracula try's hunting down the lawyer and those close to him。 I really liked to see how this book inspired the pop culture icon of Count Dracula, of course the modern adaptations are not completely accurate to the original but it Dracula is a story about an English lawyer who travels to foreign land, Dracula's Castle in Transylvania, to finish a real estate deal。 The lawyer ends up fearing for his life after learning the truth about Dracula and escapes the castle, one thing leads to another and Dracula try's hunting down the lawyer and those close to him。 I really liked to see how this book inspired the pop culture icon of Count Dracula, of course the modern adaptations are not completely accurate to the original but it was interesting to see nevertheless。 One prominent difference between pop culture Dracula and actual Dracula is the animal associated with them, pop culture Dracula is associated with a bat as actual Dracula is more associated with wolves。 Personally I found it very interesting how Bram Stoker chose to write the book as a whole, I am of course referring to the journal entries。 I liked how this method revealed many characters perspectives, it truly gave more insight to separate the characters as a whole。 This book took me a little longer than anticipated due to the language used but that is just common for the era in which the book was written。 Overall I found the book interesting in terms of the story and I loved looking at the comparison to the way that he was adapted into pop culture versus ow he was originally written。 。。。more

Neat to read the book that started the craze。 The plot itself was very interesting, my main qualm with the book was how Van Helsing seemed to know all the facts of what the strengths and weaknesses of vampires are without explaining how he knows。 On top of that is the fact that he constantly is withholding information for no reason。 Yet surpassing this, the Stoker’s presentation of vampires was still very interesting and chilling in today’s world which makes me think he must have been the Stephe Neat to read the book that started the craze。 The plot itself was very interesting, my main qualm with the book was how Van Helsing seemed to know all the facts of what the strengths and weaknesses of vampires are without explaining how he knows。 On top of that is the fact that he constantly is withholding information for no reason。 Yet surpassing this, the Stoker’s presentation of vampires was still very interesting and chilling in today’s world which makes me think he must have been the Stephen King of the 1890s。 。。。more

And WHY did we have to talk about boxes full of dirt for 100+ pages before anything was done with them?!I think most adaptations loosely base themselves upon the original novel, which I actually think is the way to go。 It’s a story on which we’ve based most our view of Vampires。 It’s given us a lot of ideas, but is an exciting read? Not in all in my opinion。 Rating: 2 Stars 。。。more

Dracula by Bram Stoker is known as the first book to introduce vampires。 Since its release, it has inspired many different books, movies, and shows involving vampires。 Reading this classic book knowing all of that made it very interesting。 Along with this, the book was made more interesting by the way it was told。 It was told through journals and letters。 Which made it a fairly fun, though sometimes confusing read。 Sadly, it also made the book seem very slow, or perhaps I'm just used to faster-p Dracula by Bram Stoker is known as the first book to introduce vampires。 Since its release, it has inspired many different books, movies, and shows involving vampires。 Reading this classic book knowing all of that made it very interesting。 Along with this, the book was made more interesting by the way it was told。 It was told through journals and letters。 Which made it a fairly fun, though sometimes confusing read。 Sadly, it also made the book seem very slow, or perhaps I'm just used to faster-pased books。 It took a long time to get interested and I had to force myself to read it at first but I still enjoyed the book。 I would recommend reading it more for the historical importance than anything else。 even so, I do recommend it。 。。。more
