Summary

Christians know what Jesus Christ has done, but who is He? What is His deepest heart for His people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said He is “gentle and lowly in heart。” This book reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who He is for sinners and sufferers today。

My friend, Kate sent me this for my 40th。 It was a bit too theological for me, but it was good none the less。 I struggled to understand parts, but enjoyed sharing messages back and forth while she also worked her way through the book。 I'm going to the post office today to get it in the mail for my brother and sister in law, as I think they will take a lot out of it。 The biggest take away for me is just how much Christ is love。 My friend, Kate sent me this for my 40th。 It was a bit too theological for me, but it was good none the less。 I struggled to understand parts, but enjoyed sharing messages back and forth while she also worked her way through the book。 I'm going to the post office today to get it in the mail for my brother and sister in law, as I think they will take a lot out of it。 The biggest take away for me is just how much Christ is love。 。。。more

“Let Jesus draw you in through the loveliness of his heart。 This is a heart that upbraids the impenitent with all the harshness that is appropriate, yet embraces the penitent with more openness than we are able to feel。 It is a heart that walks us into the bright meadow of the felt love of God。 It is a heart that drew the despised and forsaken to his feet in self-abandoning hope。 It is a heart of perfect balance and proportion, never overreacting, never excusing, never lashing out。 It is a heart “Let Jesus draw you in through the loveliness of his heart。 This is a heart that upbraids the impenitent with all the harshness that is appropriate, yet embraces the penitent with more openness than we are able to feel。 It is a heart that walks us into the bright meadow of the felt love of God。 It is a heart that drew the despised and forsaken to his feet in self-abandoning hope。 It is a heart of perfect balance and proportion, never overreacting, never excusing, never lashing out。 It is a heart that throbs with desire for the destitute。 It is a heart that floods suffering with the deep solace of shared solidarity in the suffering。 It is a heart that is gentle and lowly。” 。。。more

I have to admit, it feels "wrong" to give two stars on a book about Jesus。 I had heard so much about this book and really wanted to love it, but I didn't。I read this as part of a "book study" with church members。 And while it's theologically sound and draws mainly from puritan writings, such as John Bunyan and Thomas Goodwin, it wasn't my favorite。 One woman expressed how much it meant to her in her current season of life; another felt as I did。 But after having just finished a book that made me I have to admit, it feels "wrong" to give two stars on a book about Jesus。 I had heard so much about this book and really wanted to love it, but I didn't。I read this as part of a "book study" with church members。 And while it's theologically sound and draws mainly from puritan writings, such as John Bunyan and Thomas Goodwin, it wasn't my favorite。 One woman expressed how much it meant to her in her current season of life; another felt as I did。 But after having just finished a book that made me stop and think and process on my own, this one felt。。。kind of redundant, like being spoon-fed。 But then Thomas Goodwin wrote (something like) 500 pages on one verse, so one chapter on a character aspect of Christ doesn't seem like too much。 It did help to read one chapter a day, kind of like a devotional, but in the end。。。I didn't finish the book。 。。。more

As the title presents the book, the author draw a wonderful picture of Christ, exposing His heart, not as a master, but as a father, waiting his prodigal son and seeing the older brother, loving them gently and with kindness。 Great book to understand the heart of Christ for His world and the sinners who suffered。 It is not only devotional but grappling an academic perspective into an accessible way for everyone! Great book!

This was a much- needed read for this self-critical Enneagram 1! It was a unique message and an important one for sure。 I will be pondering this book for a long time and will probably reread it at some point。 I am so thankful for God’s abundant love and mercy!

An excellent meditation on the heart of Christ。

Outstanding。 One of the most accessible and clear explanations of the "heart" of God。 This book is a mediation of the gospel that will draw your heart closer to God's heart。 A must read for all "sinners and sufferers。" Outstanding。 One of the most accessible and clear explanations of the "heart" of God。 This book is a mediation of the gospel that will draw your heart closer to God's heart。 A must read for all "sinners and sufferers。" 。。。more

Getting to know Jesus has been the great joy of my life。 It's funny。 That joy has increased in direct proportion to my knowledge。 I gave Jesus the short-shrift。 Prejudged him。 Because I'm a cranky guy, I presumed Jesus is a cranky guy。 Because I can be so unlovely, I struggled to believe that Jesus does in fact love me。 But I'm changing my mind。 The more I get to know Jesus, the more I discover how much better he is than I ever could have imagined。 Books like Gentle and Lowly are a big help。 The Getting to know Jesus has been the great joy of my life。 It's funny。 That joy has increased in direct proportion to my knowledge。 I gave Jesus the short-shrift。 Prejudged him。 Because I'm a cranky guy, I presumed Jesus is a cranky guy。 Because I can be so unlovely, I struggled to believe that Jesus does in fact love me。 But I'm changing my mind。 The more I get to know Jesus, the more I discover how much better he is than I ever could have imagined。 Books like Gentle and Lowly are a big help。 There is a lot of talk about religion。 Fighting back and forth。 Arguing over dogma, but have you ever cut through the drama to spend a little time with the Man himself? It may very well be the greatest joy of your life。Notes: Personal note:  Ortlund makes a good point。 I expect Jesus to react to uncleanness the way that I do。 Yet I was unclean, and Jesus reacted to me in love (30)Miracles are not an interruption of the natural order but the restoration of the natural order (31) MoltmannJesus Christ is closer to you today than he was to sinners and sufferers he spoke with and touched in his earthly ministry (33)We don’t feel the weight of our sin because of -- our sin (68)Personal note: I should re-read chapter 7 anytime I’m feeling condemned by sinIt is the most counterintuitive aspect of Christianity, that we are declared right with God not once we begin to get our act together but once we collapse in the honest acknowledgment that we never will (78)The answer is that intercession applies what the atonement accomplished (79)One way to think of Christ’s intercession, then, is simply this: Jesus is praying for you right now (84)Personal note: future graceIntercession is something Christ is always doing, while advocacy is something he does as occasion calls for it (90)If your anger is justified, know that Jesus is angry with you。  Angrier than even you。  Let Jesus be angry on your behalf。  Pactum Salutis: the Covenant of Redemption The creation of the world seems to have been especially for this end, that the eternal son of God might obtain a spouse, towards whom he might fully exercise the infinite benevolence of his nature, and to whom he might, as it were, open and pour forth all that immense fountain of condescension, love, and grace that was in his heart, and that in this way God might be glorified--Jonathan Edwards (106)If an Eskimo wins a vacation to a sunny place, he doesn’t arrive in his hotel room, step out onto the balcony, and wonder how to apply that to his life。 He just enjoys it。 He just basks (215) 。。。more

The book makes several lovely points, but it did not capture my attention in a way I was hoping it would。

This was not an easy read。 Not that it was difficult to understand or hard to get through (although the first couple chapters were a struggle)。 But it was meaty, weighty, drawing you to stop, reflect, chew a bit on its profound revelations about Christ’s heart and His genuine, pure, everlasting, never ending love for us。 Take your time with this one, chew it one morsel at a time。

4。5 starsThis has been an overly-recommended book to me in the past year, and I'm thankful to have finally read it。 Although in some regards I feel the praise it has received has been a little over-the-top, I still would say that this is a must-read。 I was particularly fond of Ortlund's use of succinct and poetic language, which effectively described the heart of Christ in a beautiful and satisfying way。I think it is also important to note that much of this book is made up of heavy block quotes 4。5 starsThis has been an overly-recommended book to me in the past year, and I'm thankful to have finally read it。 Although in some regards I feel the praise it has received has been a little over-the-top, I still would say that this is a must-read。 I was particularly fond of Ortlund's use of succinct and poetic language, which effectively described the heart of Christ in a beautiful and satisfying way。I think it is also important to note that much of this book is made up of heavy block quotes from classic Christian and Puritan literature and commentaries。 To me, it often felt that this book was simply a modern retelling of those original concepts。 I believe this function is still necessary and helpful, but it often left me wanting more of the rich theology and language found in those original books。Some aspects of this book felt a little misdirected and muddled at points。 This review examines how Ortlund fails to follow through with his intended thesis, which I thought was accurate。 Instead, he succeeds in communicating and arguing other biblical truths。Don't misunderstand me, I thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from this book。 But I also wanted to be realistic and speak through the hype a little bit。 :) 。。。more

What I expected to be an easy, encouraging read turned out to be a challenging, theologically deep, thought provoking read。 I found myself often stopping, considering, sometimes researching as I went, slowly digesting the truth before me。 It is full of encouraging and beautiful truths, and reminders of the vastness of the love of Christ。 Five stars, would read again。

While I loved the message of this book, it was really hard for me to read。 There are many references to Puritan reverends and the language really slowed me down。 I am also used to reading books by women authors, so I'm not sure if that is why I really didn't enjoy the writing style or not。 It seemed very factual as if reading a boring report。 That really disheartened me because the message of the book is so important。 Though it took me a long time to read, I would still recommend it for it's con While I loved the message of this book, it was really hard for me to read。 There are many references to Puritan reverends and the language really slowed me down。 I am also used to reading books by women authors, so I'm not sure if that is why I really didn't enjoy the writing style or not。 It seemed very factual as if reading a boring report。 That really disheartened me because the message of the book is so important。 Though it took me a long time to read, I would still recommend it for it's content。 。。。more

Wow。 Just wow。I am usually skeptical of any sort of trending Christian book because they tend to not be very good either in quality or theology。 This book, however, is excellent in both。 If this is the "next big thing" in Christian books, then I am hopeful。 A beautiful treatment of the heart of Christ, Gentle and Lowly should be read by as many as possible。 Wow。 Just wow。I am usually skeptical of any sort of trending Christian book because they tend to not be very good either in quality or theology。 This book, however, is excellent in both。 If this is the "next big thing" in Christian books, then I am hopeful。 A beautiful treatment of the heart of Christ, Gentle and Lowly should be read by as many as possible。 。。。more

Very good。 This has moved my heart。 “We see in a mirror dimly lit”, as Paul says。。 but I think God gives us books like this to brighten the image a bit。 To prepare us for glory and eternal worship。 To awaken our hearts to His Word and deepen our abiding。 It only magnified the Word。 Its not to say the Word is insufficient。 We are the insufficient ones。 It’s like, the Word is the full masterpiece picture。 But God gives us gifts like this to zoom in to help our fallen hearts to see the detail and w Very good。 This has moved my heart。 “We see in a mirror dimly lit”, as Paul says。。 but I think God gives us books like this to brighten the image a bit。 To prepare us for glory and eternal worship。 To awaken our hearts to His Word and deepen our abiding。 It only magnified the Word。 Its not to say the Word is insufficient。 We are the insufficient ones。 It’s like, the Word is the full masterpiece picture。 But God gives us gifts like this to zoom in to help our fallen hearts to see the detail and wonder of it all。 Which then makes the picture more recognizable and beautiful。 Because we know it more fully I’ll be re-reading this one。 。。。more

A extremely helpful book。 Would highly recommend for any Christian。 It challenges you immensely to have an accurate theology of who Christ is。

Overall I think it is a good book and Ortlund references great theologians。 There are certainly a lot of great truths in this book。 One thing I think Ortlund may be guilty of is pitting God’s attributes against each other。 At points saying that there is divine “tension” within himself。 Overall the book is great for its purpose。 To show that coming to Christ is the greatest thing that will ever happen to a person, by revealing a part of Jesus’s heart towards us。

This book is a look at the very heart of Jesus。 Each of us are sinners and sufferers, and Ortlund sets out to explore how Jesus meets us where we're at。 His heart for us is of love, and of mercy。 He calls us to "come to him" for he is "gentle and lowly" of heart。 I would recommend this book to any Christian, as it deals with who we are and who Jesus is on a level that can relate to all of us。 This book is a look at the very heart of Jesus。 Each of us are sinners and sufferers, and Ortlund sets out to explore how Jesus meets us where we're at。 His heart for us is of love, and of mercy。 He calls us to "come to him" for he is "gentle and lowly" of heart。 I would recommend this book to any Christian, as it deals with who we are and who Jesus is on a level that can relate to all of us。 。。。more
