Summary

No one can save her。

In order to protect Prince Lucien d’Malvane’s heart, Zera had to betray him。 Now, he hates the sight of her。 Trapped in Cavanos as a prisoner of the king, she awaits the inevitable moment her witch severs their magical connection and finally ends her life。

But fate isn't ready to give her up just yet。

With freedom coming from the most unlikely of sources, Zera is given a second chance at life as a Heartless。 But it comes with a terrible price。 As the king mobilizes his army to march against the witches, Zera must tame an elusive and deadly valkerax trapped in the tunnels underneath the city if she wants to regain her humanity。

Winning over a bloodthirsty valkerax? Hard。 Winning back her friends before war breaks out? A little harder。

But a Heartless winning back Prince Lucien’s heart?

The hardest thing she’s ever done。

Idk, maybe it's me being impatient or not understanding enough。 It's kinda sad, I had a lot of hope for this book and was really excited about it。 The writing was good and enjoyable as always (I managed to finish it) but honestly, I hated most of the characters and their interactions, I think the book would have been more understandable if we had had a POV of Lucien so that the actions made sense。 Because they didn't make sense until the last chapters。 I think that's the only thing I disliked ap Idk, maybe it's me being impatient or not understanding enough。 It's kinda sad, I had a lot of hope for this book and was really excited about it。 The writing was good and enjoyable as always (I managed to finish it) but honestly, I hated most of the characters and their interactions, I think the book would have been more understandable if we had had a POV of Lucien so that the actions made sense。 Because they didn't make sense until the last chapters。 I think that's the only thing I disliked apart from Zera, but I guess, it was good。I'm still curious about what's going to happen but a little bit disappointed about this book。 I really loved the first one。 I think that I'm being too immature about this book but it just annoyed me a lot like I didn't enjoy most of the things that happened in the book。 。。。more

No matter how much you try, you will not EVER stop reading the book。 If you like fantasy, then don't think twice to read the book。 It might not have the quips and humor as much as the first book, but it will not fail to be the most entertaining read。(PS: I'm beginning to hate Varia) No matter how much you try, you will not EVER stop reading the book。 If you like fantasy, then don't think twice to read the book。 It might not have the quips and humor as much as the first book, but it will not fail to be the most entertaining read。(PS: I'm beginning to hate Varia) 。。。more

I feel like this book was way better than the previous one。 I had very mixed feelings about the first book but this one, I absolutely adored。 I think the reason would be because I liked the premise of this one so much better。What made me love this one so much more is the fact that Zera didn't have to pretend in this one。 We saw Lucien and the others learn the truth about her in the end of last one, so she had no reason to pretend to be a lady and make everyone like her。 She was free to be hersel I feel like this book was way better than the previous one。 I had very mixed feelings about the first book but this one, I absolutely adored。 I think the reason would be because I liked the premise of this one so much better。What made me love this one so much more is the fact that Zera didn't have to pretend in this one。 We saw Lucien and the others learn the truth about her in the end of last one, so she had no reason to pretend to be a lady and make everyone like her。 She was free to be herself and that's what she did。 This also made me enjoy the dynamic between Lucien and Zera。 I didn't like the romance in the first one, so I was pleasantly surprised that I was anticipating their next interaction。 The angst between them is what I was living for。There's also a particular monster whom I loved 🤗。The only complicated thing about this book was Varia。 I'm not sure if I like her or not。 Sometimes I feel like she's on the right and I support her but then I feel like she's the villain。 So we shall see what my feelings are when I read the next book。 。。。more

Loved it。The angst in this book is laced with laughter, kind of。 Zera is a funny character, even when in pain (emotional or physical)。But for real, this book was awesome。 A continuation of the awesomeness of the first one。 I think this one (second book) is my favorite。 We get to know Zera in depth, her mind and her heart (I will never not make jokes about hearts regarding Zera) are painful places to be, yet one cannot be serious for long when Zera is such a hilarious character。So, yeah, painful Loved it。The angst in this book is laced with laughter, kind of。 Zera is a funny character, even when in pain (emotional or physical)。But for real, this book was awesome。 A continuation of the awesomeness of the first one。 I think this one (second book) is my favorite。 We get to know Zera in depth, her mind and her heart (I will never not make jokes about hearts regarding Zera) are painful places to be, yet one cannot be serious for long when Zera is such a hilarious character。So, yeah, painful but fun。 。。。more

Am I going to read the third book? Yes, yes I am。 Because I am a completionist in this sense。 Do I think this book has an interesting concept, yes, but the writing isn't doing it for me and I don't care for the characters a ton。 Now onto the third when I decide it's time。 Am I going to read the third book? This is such a fun series! ⛔️possible teeny spoilers ahead⛔️The world & magic-system are so fantastic & have many refreshingly different aspects that leave you constantly wanting more。 And of course, Sara Wolf’s writing-style is incredibly entertaining; filled with great banter & sarcastic one-liners, but also laced with thought-provoking messages。 “Jealousy is a terrible beast that makes clever people so dull。” 🔍🔍🔍 Where’s the lie?? We can’t find her 🧐 Zera (aka “conniving cave scorpion”) is the type of morally-grey, constantly conflicted wildcard I adore; sharp-tongued & never fails to make me laugh。 Out loud。 Repeatedly。 💗🌈☀️“We need to find someone decidedly less criminal & frequently less homicidal。”☀️🌈💗 You will find zero toxic positivity here 😌This sequel had much less of a focus on a romantic element which is usually what keeps me hooked, however, the way Ms Wolf wraps up her plot in mystery & intrigue, a loveable cast of characters & commentary around guilt, hope, mercy & sacrifice, power, fear, & hate, kept me enchanted until the very end - it truly packs a punch 🥊💥 The first-person present tense is the only (semi) downfall for me personally, as sometimes it can be A LOT to be stuck inside Zera’s frequent thought-spirals (being stuck in my own is ✨more than enough tyvm✨)I feel cheated that my library doesn’t have the final book for me to devour so I guess my credit card & I will be taking another trip to Amazon 💸 。。。more

sadly i must say i didn’t enjoy this one as much as the previous one。 maybe it’s because of varia。 i cannot get along with her character at all and i don’t even know why。 her actions are justifiable and understandable and she is quite a strong character but maybe it’s her backstory that is missing。 she’s kinda just thrown into the story with her plan and the reader just hast to deal with it。the whole plot was also kinda slow。 for the length this book there wasn’t a lot going on。 it was always th sadly i must say i didn’t enjoy this one as much as the previous one。 maybe it’s because of varia。 i cannot get along with her character at all and i don’t even know why。 her actions are justifiable and understandable and she is quite a strong character but maybe it’s her backstory that is missing。 she’s kinda just thrown into the story with her plan and the reader just hast to deal with it。the whole plot was also kinda slow。 for the length this book there wasn’t a lot going on。 it was always the same and it made me skip over some parts of the book (don’t hate me pls)。we also saw a lot less of the characters that made the first book as good as it was (at least for me) and the new characters that were brought in didn’t make up for the loss。still sera was as quick witted and sassy as always and i enjoy her as the main character a lot。the ending was also a bit unexpected and a nice finish to this unfortunately pretty dry booktherefore i am looking forward to what book #3 will bring to the table and how zeras story will end :) 。。。more

I did not expect to be reminded of second book syndrome while reading this… and I was so excited to read this series。 But for all my disappointment, it’s still a great read and I believe I will be much happier after the third book。Make no mistake, this book is great and also a great addition to the series。 But after the first book, this was a bit disappointing。This book was missing the snark that I enjoyed from the first book。 Instead, it was replaced by a self-deprecating loop。 I give Wolf prop I did not expect to be reminded of second book syndrome while reading this… and I was so excited to read this series。 But for all my disappointment, it’s still a great read and I believe I will be much happier after the third book。Make no mistake, this book is great and also a great addition to the series。 But after the first book, this was a bit disappointing。This book was missing the snark that I enjoyed from the first book。 Instead, it was replaced by a self-deprecating loop。 I give Wolf props for writing a non-angsty inner monologue, although anymore and she would have gotten dangerous close。My biggest peeve with this book has be the reduction in characters。 I’ll admit (view spoiler)[Varia (hide spoiler)] was a very interesting character and one that was well-developed。 As was (view spoiler)[Gavin and Korl (hide spoiler)]。 But the rest of the cast, all the ones from the first book, became so damn shallow。 I really liked Lucian and Fione in the first book, but in this one, man, they really flattened out。 I think my favourite thing that the author addressed was their two week love story。 (view spoiler)[ Unfortunately, despite addressing it, the author all but ignored the implications, but I think (or I hope) that the third book builds on it。 (hide spoiler)] Plot wise, I’m very impressed with the way everything was strung together。 Personally, I think the plot could have been a little more intricate, but I might just be spoilt from reading crime fic。 The world-building was still amazing。 Although, some of the MC’s actions kinda drove me up the wall。 I’ve rounded 3。5 stars up。 Mostly because the world building and plot was pretty well strung together, making up for my disappointment。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The second book was amazing! Even better than the first one, I must say。 Usually second books have "second book syndrome" but this one definitely didn't!I enjoyed every moment and every word。 And again the world building was absolutely superb and I was wishing for a map of Arathess or Cavanos。 The character growth for Zera and Lucien was amazing to read。 I had a feeling Lucien had become a witch! I honestly had a feeling it was starting to happen when he accidentally on purpose brought Malachite The second book was amazing! I honestly had a feeling it was starting to happen when he accidentally on purpose brought Malachite back to life。I kept screaming at the pages for Zera and Lucien to just tell the other how they really feel! Zera kept trying to sacrifice her happiness thinking she wasn't worthy of him or worthy of friendship from Fione and Malachite。 And I just wanted to shake them all and tell them to say straight up what they mean, how they feel!!My most favorite parts were Zera and the valkerax, Evlorasin together and talking。 Working on weeping together。 I found the valkerax and it's origins and true names, very interesting。 I wonder if we will see Evlorasin again? And what else could the blood promise between him and Zera mean/do? What will happen with Varia? Now that she can command the valkerax can she command Evlorasin as well? Or because he can weep does that mean it doesn't work for him? I can't wait to find out what happens next。 。。。more
