Summary

Zera is a Heartless – the immortal, unageing soldier of a witch。 Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in。 With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly。

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a Prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum; if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy her heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles。

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him – every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side。 No one can challenge him – until the arrival of Lady Zera。 She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood。 The Prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat。

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all。

Winner takes the loser’s heart。

Literally。

I liked this! Zera is a fierce and witty young woman who is not afraid to speak her mind and has a lot of spunk and sass。 The other characters are not entirely flat and some of them got me invested。 There are several groups though and the world building is not out of this world, even though Vestril (sry, it was smth along those lines) certainly is。If you are an experienced reader of this genre than some things that happen along the way will probably not surprise you, but it's still a good read。 I liked this! So there was some interesting world-building stuff with the old and new gods and the witches and I'd like to find out more of that buuuut。。。。I just spent the final third of the book ever increasingly wanting to scream at Zera -- for someone who's supposed to be clever and scheming she is downright oblivious to other people's schemes right in front of her face, girl could've solved her problems three times over by now。Also? Massive cliffhanger。 So there was some interesting world-building stuff with the old and new gods and the witches and I'd like to find out more of that buuuut。。。。I just spent the final third of the book ever increasingly wanting to scream at Zera -- for someone who's supposed to be clever and scheming she is downright oblivious to other people's schemes right in front of her face, girl could've solved her problems three times over by now。Also? 3 wordsOh。my。god。This was an emotional rollercoaster with incredible punch lines。 There was not one dull moment while reading this book。 It was as if it captivates the readers and won't let go until the book is finished。 And I never want this book to finish。I was a fan of Sara Wolf long before I read this book and came with high expectations。 And this book met those expectations and much more。 The best thing about her writing is the quips and the witty banter。 All other books seems boring with a 3 wordsOh。my。god。This was an emotional rollercoaster with incredible punch lines。 There was not one dull moment while reading this book。 It was as if it captivates the readers and won't let go until the book is finished。 And I never want this book to finish。I was a fan of Sara Wolf long before I read this book and came with high expectations。 And this book met those expectations and much more。 The best thing about her writing is the quips and the witty banter。 All other books seems boring with a monotonous rendering compared to her books。 I know I sound like a lovestruck fangirl gushing over a book, but this one is worth it。 And the cliffhanger!!!! It should be made illegal!!! I just want to drop all my work and just sit and finish all the books in the series。 But boy, would it be worth it。。Ahhhh this book was so good!! I just want to re-read the book until I get tired of it。 。。。more

I don’t laugh out loud when I read。 Laughing brings questions about what I’m reading。 But I laughed constantly with this book。 Zera might just be my favorite main character ever since Rose Hathaway (from Vampire Academy)。 There’s something so fresh and fun and likable about a heroine that is just happy to exist。 Who loves openly & laughs freely。I fell in love with Zera first and foremost。 Which is rare in YA books lately, we fall for the love interest, don’t we?Well, not in this series。 Zera is I don’t laugh out loud when I read。 Laughing brings questions about what I’m reading。 But I laughed constantly with this book。 Zera might just be my favorite main character ever since Rose Hathaway (from Vampire Academy)。 There’s something so fresh and fun and likable about a heroine that is just happy to exist。 Who loves openly & laughs freely。I fell in love with Zera first and foremost。 Which is rare in YA books lately, we fall for the love interest, don’t we?Well, not in this series。 Zera is who we fall for & through her eyes and heart (haha sorry, couldn’t resist the joke) we love all the other characters。This book now has a special place in my heart (I’m not sorry about this one) and I think I’m ruined forever because I will never read this book for the first time again。 。。。more

Good:It's a simple, quick-paced book that doesn't take much of your time。 It's predictable (very much so), but not badly written。The romance is decent (if you overlook the fact that it develops over the course of only 2 weeks)。Bad: - Zera, the female lead, tries too hard to be witty, but most of the time her jokes are not funny and they make her sound rude and childish more than anything。 Seriously, do you have to crack a cringy joke every time someone wants to know if the papercut you got hurts Good:It's a simple, quick-paced book that doesn't take much of your time。 It's predictable (very much so), but not badly written。The romance is decent (if you overlook the fact that it develops over the course of only 2 weeks)。Bad: - Zera, the female lead, tries too hard to be witty, but most of the time her jokes are not funny and they make her sound rude and childish more than anything。 Seriously, do you have to crack a cringy joke every time someone wants to know if the papercut you got hurts? - This book has an open ending that resolves nothing and practically shouts at you to go get the next book。 Sure, a lot of books have open endings, but this one feels like a cliffhanger of episode 1 of a Netflix show。 They show the monster coming at the hero with a deafening roar, jaws wide open, then the screen switches to closing credits。 Visit my site for more reviews。 。。。more

I was reading the selection scene in the first chapter, where the girls are lined up and the king asks them about the i king’s worth。 This scene is basically exactly the same as a Kdrama called the Sun Embracing the Moon, in episode 4。 This drama came out in 2012, before the book was released。 Here is a basic overview of the scene by Drama Beans: Ten days later, we’re down to three bachelorettes in the final round。 The king sits them down for a question: if they were to express what the king is I was reading the selection scene in the first chapter, where the girls are lined up and the king asks them about the i king’s worth。 This scene is basically exactly the same as a Kdrama called the Sun Embracing the Moon, in episode 4。 This drama came out in 2012, before the book was released。 Here is a basic overview of the scene by Drama Beans: Ten days later, we’re down to three bachelorettes in the final round。 The king sits them down for a question: if they were to express what the king is in terms of money, what would be his worth?“The first girl answers a hundred thousand, no a million nyang, stammering that she doesn’t know money very well。 Bo-kyung answers that there is no such silver on this earth to measure up to the king’s greatness – that he should ask her again when they have figured out a way to measure the height of the sky or the depth of the ocean。 The queen dowager smiles。 Yeon-woo’s answer? One nyang。 Everyone gasps。[…] Flashback to Yeon-woo’s answer – that to someone who has ten thousand nyang, one nyang might not mean very much, but the poor know the full worth of one precious nyang。 The king is that one nyang, precious to all, and especially to those who have nothing。 Moreover the worth of one nyang is equal among all people – that is, he is the same king to rich or poor。” This is the scene from the book: “‘The king is worth…a million—no! A trillion gold coins。 No—seven trillion!’ The nobles’ laughter gets louder。 Charm blushes beet-red。 ‘I’m sorry, Your Majesty。 My father never taught me numbers。 Just sewing and things。’King Sref smiles good-naturedly。 ‘It’s quite all right。 That was a lovely answer。’The prince says nothing, face unimpressed, and points to Grace。 She curtsies and lifts her veil。‘The king’s worth cannot be measured,’ she says clearly。 ‘It is as high as the highest peak of the Tollmount-Kilstead Mountains, as wide as the “Endless Bog in the south。 His worth is deeper than the darkest depths of the Twisted Ocean。’ […] I lift my veil slowly as I say, ‘The king’s worth is exactly one potato。’ […] ‘To the common people of this country,’ I press on, ‘one potato can mean the difference between starving in winter and making it through to spring。 A single potato means life。 A single potato is a saving grace。 To the king’s people living in his villages, in his kingdom, nothing is more precious than one potato。’ “ I think these two scenes are very identical, and I need a second opinion。 What does everyone else think? 。。。more

I’m so tired of these girls made of snark and quips who are “not like other girls”。 (Also, apparently you’re like a lot of girls because I’ve read SO MANY books like this。) We get it; you’re a tortured soul who killed some people a long time ago and now you’re entire personality is built around making quippy one-liners so no one thinks you actually care about anything。 It’s tired and tedious and incredibly boring。 This book had a few moments, and I was really into it for the last 10%, but then w I’m so tired of these girls made of snark and quips who are “not like other girls”。 (Also, apparently you’re like a lot of girls because I’ve read SO MANY books like this。) We get it; you’re a tortured soul who killed some people a long time ago and now you’re entire personality is built around making quippy one-liners so no one thinks you actually care about anything。 It’s tired and tedious and incredibly boring。 This book had a few moments, and I was really into it for the last 10%, but then when it finally got interesting, it ended in a terrible cliffhanger。 So maybe the next book would be better, but I doubt I’ll read it。 。。。more

I need the second one。 My heart is literally about to stop。 It was so good!!! At first I was a little annoyed that romance was starting to develop and that she wouldn’t rip his heart out but the ending was so heart breaking and amazing it all came together so well and I’m not annoyed about that anymore。 It was just the perfect amount of humor, seriousness, and violence。 I will be reading the second book。

This book was interesting until the end。 Zera is witty, funny, brave and caring。 The supporting characters are also very good like Lady Y'shrennia, Malachite, Reginall 。 。 the last chapter, I don't know, it just became way to predictable and then I would have hoped that Zera was strong enough to make a decision。 I know the decision is not an easy one but had always seen her as logical and able to see the whole picture。 Also, the sudden appearance of a dead character along with Fione 。 。 I know t This book was interesting until the end。 Zera is witty, funny, brave and caring。 The supporting characters are also very good like Lady Y'shrennia, Malachite, Reginall 。 。 the last chapter, I don't know, it just became way to predictable and then I would have hoped that Zera was strong enough to make a decision。 I know the decision is not an easy one but had always seen her as logical and able to see the whole picture。 Also, the sudden appearance of a dead character along with Fione 。 。 I know there are hidden stories or agendas which remain to be revealed but there was not nothing smooth or natural in the story telling in regards to them or their actions。 Nonetheless, I will read the next book as there are still more interesting aspects of the book and I'd like to see how it progresses。 。。。more

Spoiler Free!I think is now my favorite novel。 I can't even put it into words, it's so detailed, the world is so rich, I adore the characters。 I read this in。。。 three days? I don't know what made me finish this book。。。 I love the premise of course - the concept of the Heartless, the plan to seduce the prince, the inevitable heartbreak - but the execution was poor。 I found the MC incredibly annoying, her plan rather pointless in the long scheme of things, the world-building and backstory fuzzy on the details, and the romance itself。。。 meh。 -Why do they think stealing the prince's heart will stop his father from starting a war? Especially after we're told that the idea of war has been brewing among the common people and the nobles for a while; it no longer makes sense to think the king will be powerful enough to stop it if it's already started。。。 It seemed to me that the witches needed a spy a lot more than a killer。。。-How come and the humans have somehow made peace with all the other magical creatures but the witches? How does the conflict between the old god and the new god affect this? We're given tidbits of information throughout the book - and those are actually the most interesting parts - but only in passing。 Then we're back to Zera being a smartass or having an existential crisis。。。-From the blurb, I expected Zera to be a hardened Heartless, someone who has come to terms with what she is。 She most certainly has not, and most of her inner monologues are about her guilt and hope to become better。 Which is fair and cool if that's the direction you want to go to, but makes her seem like the wrong person for this job。 It's inevitable that she will fall for him, but annoyingly it's also inevitable that will not be able to kill him。 Even of it wasn't "love", she doesn't seem to have what it takes no matter how many times we're told she's a cold-hearted monster。-I also have no idea why these people even like each other? Most importantly, why are they willing to sacrifice their lives' goals for each other? All we know is that she is "funny" and brave, and he has a big heart which he hides cause tragic backstory。。。 ookay 🙄For some reason though, I am considering book 2。。。 I want to read more about the lore and creatures of this world and see how the war will play out。 。。。more

I was going through a reading slump when I decided to pick up this book。 When I was at the library I read the prologue, and the protagonist gave me a bit of a not-like-other-girls feelings。 However, when the actual book begins, she's not like that at all and is one of my favorite protagonists。 I liked seeing a character who's relatably snarky AND a mc。 (Usually the snarky characters are side characters)。 Definitely recommend if you like an enemies-to-lovers slow burn fantasy。(Spoilers)I kinda go I was going through a reading slump when I decided to pick up this book。 When I was at the library I read the prologue, and the protagonist gave me a bit of a not-like-other-girls feelings。 However, when the actual book begins, she's not like that at all and is one of my favorite protagonists。 I liked seeing a character who's relatably snarky AND a mc。 (Usually the snarky characters are side characters)。 Definitely recommend if you like an enemies-to-lovers slow burn fantasy。(Spoilers)I kinda got frustrated on behalf of Zera; she really does not deserve all of the shit that she has to deal with, despite what the hunger and others tell her。 She's been so lonely for so long that she's gotten used to the feeling and doesn't recognize her own despair (kinda like what Sypha from Castlevania said) even though its clear to the reader。 One of the best books I've read in awhile。 。。。more

The plot-twist ending also wasn’t as plot-twisty for me as I definitely predicted what was coming, but I’d just blame than on some great foreshadowing, so…it kinda worked anyway lmao 🤷🏻‍♀️ 。。。more
