super cute book which i remember reading from my childhood。 the illustrations of this book are so warm and soft giving a very comforting feel to the whole book。 the illustrator also adds to this effect by using water colour which gives the pictures a very calming and soft feel。 the story in its self shows how emotion can be conveyed through actions and words。 this is a good message for children as they're able to see the different ways in which people can express emotions and how perception can super cute book which i remember reading from my childhood。 the illustrations of this book are so warm and soft giving a very comforting feel to the whole book。 the illustrator also adds to this effect by using water colour which gives the pictures a very calming and soft feel。 the story in its self shows how emotion can be conveyed through actions and words。 this is a good message for children as they're able to see the different ways in which people can express emotions and how perception can alter how we perceive things。 through using the comparison of sizes it also shows how people can feel such strong emotions yet maybe not be able to show them that well。 。。。more

I was amazed by this book, so imagine my surprise when I found a few sad reviews about it。 Someone said: “Can't the parent just let the kid win one? Even after kid falls asleep, the parent has to one-up the frustrated, exhausted child。 Go pick on someone your own size!”Then another reviewer agreed, saying that “Guess How Much I Love You turns loving each other into "a competition where the child can never win against the parent”。 Competition? Really? There’s no competition in this book, only a parent who’s trying his best to let his kid know that he loves him more than words can ever say。 He wants the kid to know that he’ll always be there for him no matter what。 I may not have a son, but I have a dad who has given me nothing but love my entire life。 Dad would never see me fall because he wants to win, and he would definitely do everything in his power to let me know that I’m safe in his love。 The parent in the book is just doing the same。 I really appreciate G。 Miller’s review, he nailed the book’s essence beautifully。 He said:“This book is about the nature of the love that exists between parent and child。 No matter how much your children love you, I assure you that it will never be as much as you love them。 That's what this book is about”。 I certainly agree and thoroughly recommend Guess How Much I Love You。 。。。more

A classic that will stand the test of time for years to come - Dallin and I love to act out the different motions as we read, comparing his arm length to mine, how high he can jump vs how high I can, etc。 etc。 This is a book perfect for snuggling up with before bed, and a spectacular reminder to children that they will always be loved unendingly。

Illustrations: Utterly charming。 They have a sketch-like quality which allows Jeram to indicate the dynamic activity of both Big and Little Nutbrown Hare as they reach, hop, hug, and finally collapse in sleep。Words: This is a book which seems so widely loved it might be anathema to criticize。 In general I find the concept of the book charming and insightful: a child seeks to define the undefinable, measure the unmeasurable。 He/she is repeatedly shown the limits of his/her endeavor until he/she m Illustrations: Utterly charming。 They have a sketch-like quality which allows Jeram to indicate the dynamic activity of both Big and Little Nutbrown Hare as they reach, hop, hug, and finally collapse in sleep。Words: This is a book which seems so widely loved it might be anathema to criticize。 In general I find the concept of the book charming and insightful: a child seeks to define the undefinable, measure the unmeasurable。 He/she is repeatedly shown the limits of his/her endeavor until he/she must reach outside of his/herself to attempt to measure love。 There is, of course, truth in what Little Nutbrown Hare discovers: love between parents and children cannot be easily demonstrated physically in the boundaries of our own bodies, even though that does not stop us from trying, because we are, afterall, embodied。 We use what tools we have to express the inexpressible even when we fall short。There is unfortunately a more sinister reading of this text which turns the demonstration of love into a competition in which Big Nutbrown Hare because of his/her size is more capable by the child's standards of loving。 In fact Big Nutbrown Hare seems determined to "one-up" Little Nutbrown Hare throughout the story。 His/her motivations are unclear: does he/she wish to push LNH to further declarations of love (a la King Lear)? Is he/she trying to demonstrate that LNH's love will always be less that BNH's? Is he/she actually trying to help LNH understand the limitations of the physical to define the emotional? The ending leaves me uncertain as to how to read this text。 LNH falls asleep believing him/herself to have finally achieved his/her goal: to measure love。 BNH does not let LNH have the final word but neither does BNH insist that LNH hear his/her insistence on superior love。 How should a reader understand this? I would say the answer depends on how metaphor works in this text。 What remains ambiguous throughout the text is the extent to which the parental figure engages with the child figure aware that all measurements of love are metaphorical approximations, even LNH's final, most extreme measurement only succeeds because it can be considered non-literal hyperbole just like the BNH's response。 If the reader considers both BNH and LNH to understand in the end this truth about how metaphor provides an aid to measuring the unmeasurable, it can be considered a very positive uplifting book。However, I think the more straightforward reading is that children will never be able to either express their love or actually love as much as their parents。 Perhaps this is meant to be reassuring to children, but I think it underestimates them。**I'm a PhD student in Eng Lit who will become a mom in 1 month and I'm reviewing books based on the criteria I know for books, not based on how my kids react to them。 I may come back and edit reviews to reflect the opinion of child audiences for whom these books were intended** 。。。more
