This book has been the best thing to ever happen to my type 1 diabetes! 20 years with this illness and I haven’t been wise to half as much in that time as I have from just reading this book in 1 month。 Thank you, thank you, thank you! Life changing。

This book is written for insulin dependant diabetics。 While I do have Type 2 diabetes, I am not insulin dependant, but I did learn a lot about how insulin works and all the factors that can affect blood sugar。

Very informative and practical。 I find myself referencing it a lot as I learn how to best manage the condition。

Even better than the previous edition。I had read the second edition of this book in 2015, I felt then that I had been spending 13 years in the dark。 Now reading this latest edition in 2021, I still feel that I haven’t been up to date。 There were certain situations I thought to be unsolvable like post-meal meteoric spike and an alarming fall two or three hours later。 Gary Scheiner has a solution for everything。 He is like a coach, guiding you with his arm around your shoulder to face whatever the Even better than the previous edition。I had read the second edition of this book in 2015, I felt then that I had been spending 13 years in the dark。 Now reading this latest edition in 2021, I still feel that I haven’t been up to date。 There were certain situations I thought to be unsolvable like post-meal meteoric spike and an alarming fall two or three hours later。 Gary Scheiner has a solution for everything。 He is like a coach, guiding you with his arm around your shoulder to face whatever the challenge awaits。 More than once he states that having diabetes shouldn’t limit your life in any way, I strongly agree with that。 Yes, I loved those Billy Joel references as well。Extensive but not exhaustive。 It has pointers for all the aspects, like different types of diabetes, complications, various treatments for each of them, factors affecting blood sugar level, things that make insulin react in different ways。 Every day diabetes management is not an easy task。 However, with a book like this, you are going to that war with arms and armor。 It is a great start for anyone serious about managing ‘that’ chronic disease well。 。。。more

Books on diabetes weren’t on my radar before 6 weeks ago but now I have a stack to make my way through this year。 Life is funny like that。 This was a clear and concise introduction to the disease, treatment options and complications。 I’m sure I’ll be referring back to it in the future。

Very readable, very helpful!

I had very high expectation from the book but somehow it didn't seem to match up to the expectation。 It felt more like a marketing for pump than anything else。 May be a re-read would help。 Planning on doing so。 I had very high expectation from the book but somehow it didn't seem to match up to the expectation。 It felt more like a marketing for pump than anything else。 May be a re-read would help。 Planning on doing so。 。。。more

An indispensable book for taking control of Type 1 Diabetes。 There’s great information about all of the available tools, technology, and types of insulin available to diabetics。 Tons of resources too。 There’s so much included that it deserves to be read once for the overall knowledge it offers, and then as many more times as needed for a focus on everything applicable to an individual。 Most important is the detail given on strategies to achieve the most stable blood glucose possible。 It goes a l An indispensable book for taking control of Type 1 Diabetes。 There’s great information about all of the available tools, technology, and types of insulin available to diabetics。 Tons of resources too。 There’s so much included that it deserves to be read once for the overall knowledge it offers, and then as many more times as needed for a focus on everything applicable to an individual。 Most important is the detail given on strategies to achieve the most stable blood glucose possible。 It goes a long way to help people really become their own advocate in managing their diabetes。 It’s only been a year-and-a-half since our daughter’s diagnosis, and one thing I think the hospital did a good job of is showing us that although it involves a major lifestyle change, it was something we were very capable of handling。 And yet, although that was something we needed to hear, the crash-course that we were given couldn’t possibly teach us enough in so short a time。 We obviously rely quite a bit on endocrinologists to make sure we’re doing what we should be, but this book is invaluable when it comes to understanding all the particulars that we need to be aware of when bolusing or treating highs and lows。 It’s easy to come away from the hospital with an oversimplified view of the necessary calculations。 “Think like a Pancreas” helps identify everything that should be considered, breaks down all the necessary calculations, the reasons for them, and how to apply them。 It’ll take a bit of studying, but a book like this can help people really excel at diabetes management, rather than simply succeeding; an important distinction when it comes to the general health of a loved one。 。。。more

Very useful。 Give a lot more information about why things should be done and how to do them than diabetes team has。 One that will be useful as a reference going forward also。

Very informative although sometimes a bit dry, but I found the information extremely useful in learning to understand how to manage diabetes。 I think it is a must read if you are serious about taking back control。

I checked out a copy of this book from my local library。 My young son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes。 Someone I met through the T1D support group suggested this book。 I found the information in this book very helpful。 This book has helped me learn a lot and given me a greater insight in how to help my son navigate this new diagnoses。 I would recommend this book to anyone with a T1D diagnosis!

My biggest take away from this book is how exhausting and overwhelming it must be to become diagnosed with diabetes! This book was full of good information about diabetes。 A good read for a new diabetic, someone with a diabetic close one, or someone who has had diabetes for a while。 It straddles the line between readability and informative or scientific。 It is not a good book for diabetic information for those who don't live in the USA as the book has too many American cultural styles and references to be easy for a non-American and non-native English speaker。 I would definitely recommend it to American diabet This book was full of good information about diabetes。 A good read for a new diabetic, someone with a diabetic close one, or someone who has had diabetes for a while。 It straddles the line between readability and informative or scientific。 It is not a good book for diabetic information for those who don't live in the USA as the book has too many American cultural styles and references to be easy for a non-American and non-native English speaker。 I would definitely recommend it to American diabetics。 。。。more

This book is truly a must-read for anyone with type 1 diabetes or who has insulin-dependent diabetes。 After years of struggling to get my blood sugar under control with carb counting and using insulin, and feeling abandoned/dismissed by my healthcare providers, finding this book was life changing。 Truly。 Reading this was the first time I had ever heard/read anyone say, "Living with diabetes is hard。 It's a full time job。 What you're doing is hard。 Be kind to yourself" (this is a paraphrase, not This book is truly a must-read for anyone with type 1 diabetes or who has insulin-dependent diabetes。 After years of struggling to get my blood sugar under control with carb counting and using insulin, and feeling abandoned/dismissed by my healthcare providers, finding this book was life changing。 Truly。 Reading this was the first time I had ever heard/read anyone say, "Living with diabetes is hard。 It's a full time job。 What you're doing is hard。 Be kind to yourself" (this is a paraphrase, not a direct quote)。 For my personal challenges with chronic illness and the guilt/shame I had about not having good blood sugar control to be met with understanding, kindness, and compassion was one of the most impactful experiences I've had when it comes to diabetes。 The practical information in this book about actually managing blood sugar with insulin is incredible。 I'm a health care provider and we get minimal training about the practical aspects of living with diabetes and diabetes management, so even with my medical background I learned *so much* from Gary Scheiner that I wish they at least touched upon in medical school! It makes sense that diabetes is so misunderstood by healthcare providers who often don't understand how much work goes into living with a chronic disease。 It was validating and eye opening to realize just how many things impact blood sugar levels。 I came to understand my body so much better and also was able to get much better blood sugar control because of this book! Overall, Think Like a Pancreas is validating, uplifting, very informative, useful, and effective。 What more could you want from a book about diabetes? Definitely far exceeded my expectations and was a powerful turning point in my diabetes journey。 Thank you for this gift, Gary Scheiner! 。。。more

This is an excellent reference book for people with diabetes who use insulin。 I made the mistake of reading it as an e-book。 It would have been much more useful as a hard copy that I could keep referring to in the future。

As a newly diagnosed T1, best book I’ve read so far in terms of understanding the “why” of practical advice。

I have type 2 diabetes。 I’ve wanted for quite a while to learn more about diabetes, the effects of diet and exercise, highs and lows and such。 Although this book is written primarily oriented towards living with type 1 diabetes utilizing insulin to control your diabetes it is chocked full of type 2 information as well as diabetes information in general。 A dry read particularly if you’re not interested in the subject matter well worth the garnering of information in this short format book。

This book definitely helped me understand Type 1 Diabetes management more thoroughly, which should allow me to better help out as the spouse of someone with T1D

Good but requires quite a bit of effort to 'think like a pancreas'。 At the end of the day, insulin is necessary if carbohydrates are eaten, so eating slow-release carbs are the best option fr a happy pancreas。 Good but requires quite a bit of effort to 'think like a pancreas'。 At the end of the day, insulin is necessary if carbohydrates are eaten, so eating slow-release carbs are the best option fr a happy pancreas。 。。。more

This is a great resource for insulin dependent diabetics that reviews the basics and the details of diabetes and effective insulin treatment。 Although slightly outdated at this point (it was last updated in 2011), the author’s humor and relatability makes this a very accessible read。
