Summary

The bestselling, wonderfully unconventional, “warmly conspiratorial…seriously good” (The New York Times) literary memoir from the award-winning actress that has received fabulous and wide praise。 “There is no one else quite like Mary-Louise Parker…Funny, heartbreaking and profound” (Elle)。

An extraordinary literary work, Dear Mr。 You renders the singular arc of a woman’s life through letters Mary-Louise Parker composes to the men, real and hypothetical, who have informed the person she is today。 Beginning with the grandfather she never knew, the letters range from a missive to the beloved priest from her childhood to remembrances of former lovers to an homage to a firefighter she encountered to a heartfelt communication with the uncle of the infant daughter she adopted。 Readers will be amazed by the depth and style of these letters, which reveal the complexity and power to be found in relationships both loving and fraught。

Could be my favorite read of 2021- I smiled, hard, I cried, no wept, and everything in between。 This collection of letters was not what I expected, and the way MLP crafted her sentences, her stories: wow, incredible。 The letters varied, some to family members, others to strangers on the street。 I only hope she writes a collection of letters to the women who've shaped her life。 Could be my favorite read of 2021- I smiled, hard, I cried, no wept, and everything in between。 This collection of letters was not what I expected, and the way MLP crafted her sentences, her stories: wow, incredible。 The letters varied, some to family members, others to strangers on the street。 I only hope she writes a collection of letters to the women who've shaped her life。 。。。more

4。5⭐, love her writing style and some parts were so beautifully moving。 One chapter she writes to an oyster picker and it ending up being a beautiful tribute to her father。。。so creative。

It took me 80 or 90 pages to get into this book。 The letters beyond that point felt much more engaging and meaningful。 My favorite stories:- The man "dogs" that came into her life and were told to leave。 She went through a few of these and talks about about having a "oh yeah another one" feeling after the first experience。- The birth of her son- The adoption of her daughter- The death of her fatherTurned out to be a nice read。 It took me 80 or 90 pages to get into this book。 The letters beyond that point felt much more engaging and meaningful。 My favorite stories:- The man "dogs" that came into her life and were told to leave。 She went through a few of these and talks about about having a "oh yeah another one" feeling after the first experience。- The birth of her son- The adoption of her daughter- The death of her fatherTurned out to be a nice read。 。。。more

READ AS AUDIOBOOK: Pretentious。 Not nearly famous enough or well known to be writing a book。 Really felt like she was trying to be hard to be a spiritual deep writer。 Not nearly enough detail was given to explain each chapter。 So it was constant confusion and trying to figure out what part of her life or anything it was。 I didn’t want to finish it but I pushed through。

A nice surprise。 Unconventional, hilarious and moving。 Hear it read by the author if you can。

I loved this book。 I was completely transfixed and felt like I was in her soul and she was in mine。You’re dropped in points of her life through “letters” to men who have had an important influence or impact, even if they were in her presence for less than an hour - see the letter to “cab driver”。 It’s quite remarkable。 Mary Louise, you have both broken my heart, and yet made it completely whole。

I first read this a couple of years ago but wanted to dive into it again as an audiobook READ BY THE AUTHOR on my new work commute。 The book is even stronger than I remembered。 How could you not LOVE Mary-Louise Parker reading her work--so pitch-perfect。 She pulled me in repeatedly to the awe and wonder of this life we are given and I don't even care if that sounds sappy to you because dammit if you can examine your own life with half the focus and depth displayed here then my hat is off to you I first read this a couple of years ago but wanted to dive into it again as an audiobook READ BY THE AUTHOR on my new work commute。 The book is even stronger than I remembered。 How could you not LOVE Mary-Louise Parker reading her work--so pitch-perfect。 She pulled me in repeatedly to the awe and wonder of this life we are given and I don't even care if that sounds sappy to you because dammit if you can examine your own life with half the focus and depth displayed here then my hat is off to you as well, friend。 I fucking wept。 。。。more

Written in the form of letters to various people (her father, her accountant) and institutions (NASA), Dear Mr。 You charts the life of Mary-Louise Parker as captured by her relationships--both real and imaginary--along the way。 Parker's love of poetry lends itself to a well-crafted collection of correspondence, most notably to her family。 At times surprising, intriguing, wry, wistful, and tender, it invites you to sit in the wings and watch a life unfold, chaotically and with humor, heartbreak, Written in the form of letters to various people (her father, her accountant) and institutions (NASA), Dear Mr。 You charts the life of Mary-Louise Parker as captured by her relationships--both real and imaginary--along the way。 Parker's love of poetry lends itself to a well-crafted collection of correspondence, most notably to her family。 At times surprising, intriguing, wry, wistful, and tender, it invites you to sit in the wings and watch a life unfold, chaotically and with humor, heartbreak, and insight。 The audiobook is the best way to experience this book, and not just to hear Parker's performance of the "Dear Miss Girl" chapter。 。。。more

Well, full disclosure, I only listened to an hour of this book & gave up, so I guess I’m not going to be giving the most well rounded review。 That being said, I could never get into this book。 The description sounded intriguing, but it never took of for me。 In fact, I found it quite annoying。 You know when people talk in third person & how pretentious & confusing it is。 That’s what the book felt like。 Random stories out of nowhere, with no explanation of who or what she was talking about。 If you Well, full disclosure, I only listened to an hour of this book & gave up, so I guess I’m not going to be giving the most well rounded review。 That being said, I could never get into this book。 The description sounded intriguing, but it never took of for me。 In fact, I found it quite annoying。 You know when people talk in third person & how pretentious & confusing it is。 That’s what the book felt like。 Random stories out of nowhere, with no explanation of who or what she was talking about。 If you were lucky enough the story may give you enough clues to understand what or who she was referring to, but at that point I didn’t even care。 I felt like this was a just a vain attempt at proving how “artsy” she could make otherwise boring, pointless stories。 Maybe if you were already a fan, there may be enough context to fit it all in, but for me it was 👎。 。。。more

I've always been a big fan of Mary Louise Parker, and this big is very much how she comes across in interviews, quirky, and fairly nonspecific。 Her musings are excellent at conveying her mood at certain times, but are light on detail。 I've always been a big fan of Mary Louise Parker, and this big is very much how she comes across in interviews, quirky, and fairly nonspecific。 Her musings are excellent at conveying her mood at certain times, but are light on detail。 。。。more

Probably the best book I’ve read in the past five years and definitely the best audiobook (strongly recommend listening to the author read her work)。 Life-affirming, fearless, hilarious and compassionate 。。。 a life-so-far told through a prism of relationships with men — father, friends, mentors, lovers, near-friends who were gone too fast or were too crazy or scared。 Fiercely self-reflective but also forgiving of herself and (where possible) the cast of bikers, soldiers, surfers, grocery store c Probably the best book I’ve read in the past five years and definitely the best audiobook (strongly recommend listening to the author read her work)。 Life-affirming, fearless, hilarious and compassionate 。。。 a life-so-far told through a prism of relationships with men — father, friends, mentors, lovers, near-friends who were gone too fast or were too crazy or scared。 Fiercely self-reflective but also forgiving of herself and (where possible) the cast of bikers, soldiers, surfers, grocery store clerks and drama teachers who wander the story, etched by this brilliant writer’s voice。 。。。more

What a beautiful book。 I read this many years ago, and still tell the stories inside it and continue to recommend it to people。 If you’re considering reading this, you must。 :)

Very poetic, but only half the time in a good way。 The exhausting view of someone projecting a dramatically romantic dreamworld over all of their experiences。 Still, enough of the writing and stories were good enough that it's 4 stars from me。 Very poetic, but only half the time in a good way。 The exhausting view of someone projecting a dramatically romantic dreamworld over all of their experiences。 Still, enough of the writing and stories were good enough that it's 4 stars from me。 。。。more

I've always thought that Mary-Louise Parker was a beautiful but strange woman。 Her book only verifies that。 What a strange and amazing autobiography! Every chapter is a letter dedicated to someone (teachers, mentors, guys she dated, taxi drivers, even NASA), and she starts getting into their relationship with them, whatever that was。 But she goes DEEP!Without filter or shame, the author truly opens her heart and reveals many things about herself, was she's gone through, her mistakes and regrets。 I've always thought that Mary-Louise Parker was a beautiful but strange woman。 Her book only verifies that。 What a strange and amazing autobiography! This book was recommended several years ago by a friend, and I picked it as our book club book quite last minute when I realized it was my turn to pick the book。What a book。 First off, I didn't realize the book is written by the acclaimed actor who starred in West Wing。 I watched the show just this past year (2019-2020) and don't know that I could tell you any of the actors names other than Martin Sheen。 As it is I had to go enter the man's name in Google to verify I was associating the correct This book was recommended several years ago by a friend, and I picked it as our book club book quite last minute when I realized it was my turn to pick the book。What a book。 First off, I didn't realize the book is written by the acclaimed actor who starred in West Wing。 I watched the show just this past year (2019-2020) and don't know that I could tell you any of the actors names other than Martin Sheen。 As it is I had to go enter the man's name in Google to verify I was associating the correct name with the person。 All of this to say that the name Mary-Louise Parker meant nothing to me when I was reading it off and so I was pleasantly excited to learn the book was written by the same actor。The book is incredible and its description (a series of letters to the men in her life) do not do the book justice。 Yes, that is the premise of the book and indeed each chapter is a self-contained letter to various men in her life。 But what the book description fails to capture is the sheer breadth of her writing, the creativeness and simultaneous ordinariness。 The way she can bring you into a scene and lets you feel as if you are there present for those details, and yet she simultaneously keeps her life hidden and private even as this book exposes aspects of her life that the public many not know, or in my case details that I've never gone out of my way to find out。 I'm one of those weird millennials who isn't on social (Goodreads aside) and doesn't keep track of the supposed day-to-day actions of celebrities。This book will sit with me for quite awhile。 It's been 5 years since the book was released。 Hopefully she releases another one of letters to Mrs。 You。 I would certainly pick it up and devour it immediately。 。。。more

I just now stumbled upon this book and loved it。 Mary-Louise Parker tells her story in the form of letters。 She is a beautiful writer and will pierce your heart at times as she describes events and circumstances of her life。 I want more from MLP!! Absolutely stunning!
