Summary

In her new novella, Sunday Times best-selling author Becky Chambers imagines a future in which, instead of terraforming planets to sustain human life, explorers of the solar system instead transform themselves。

Ariadne is one such explorer。 As an astronaut on an extrasolar research vessel, she and her fellow crewmates sleep between worlds and wake up each time with different features。 Her experience is one of fluid body and stable mind and of a unique perspective on the passage of time。 Back on Earth, society changes dramatically from decade to decade, as it always does。

Ariadne may awaken to find that support for space exploration back home has waned, or that her country of birth no longer exists, or that a cult has arisen around their cosmic findings, only to dissolve once more by the next waking。 But the moods of Earth have little bearing on their mission: to explore, to study, and to send their learnings home。

Carrying all the trademarks of her other beloved works, including brilliant writing, fantastic world-building and exceptional, diverse characters, Becky's first audiobook outside of the Wayfarers series is sure to capture the imagination of listeners all over the world。

Loved this so so much! What an amazingly written space exploration。 And the characters were awesome。 My imagination is so happy。

FIVE STARS FOR SURE!I loved this book with my whole heart。 I was a little doubtful when everyone described this as a wholesome sci-fiction, but I cannot think of any better way to described it。 I loved the characters, their relationships, the story, and the writing style! I loved everything about this book。 Even the ending sounds like something that I wouldn't like it but it worked perfectly for me! Go read it now。I want to read it again so hard! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I liked a lot of this book, but the ending spoiled it。 I'm fine with ambiguous endings, and when done well sometimes I even like them best。 But I didn't like how there really wasn't any evidence of what choice the people on Earth made。 Part of what I like about ambiguous endings is the cool conversations is can bring--"What do you think happened? Why?" But in this case the book just ended abruptly with a confusing quote。 Unsatisfying! very well written and super interesting, even though there is this one bit of science that i didn’t fully get

So beautifully written。 Such an obvious love for science and exploration。

Excellent characters! This journey is rich in character and the wonder of discovery。 I wish there were more moments of imminent peril or higher stakes to heighten the drama。 Otherwise, wow, this was a fun adventure!

IncredibleAll I can say is, holy shit。 This story captivated me, sparked my imagination, spurred contemplation, broke me, and put me back together again。

Another beautiful book by Becky Chambers

Jake McCrary

This was really enjoyable。 Sort of a love story about exploration, survival, and learning。

feeling a little mixed about this book- very well written ofc but the novella format is weird for me bc there is not really much for plot and some of the science is hard for me to wrap my head around- super cool concept though and i did enjoy the ending-would give it a 3。75 ⭐️ if i could

Just a lovely, short read that asks some big questions。 I appreciated Chambers’ portrayal of humanity。 Very optimistic and hopeful。 She acknowledges the flaws but doesn’t dwell on them as so many sci-fi novels do。 I really enjoyed this and am very excited to read more from her。

。。。more

Another brilliant story from Becky Chambers, this one quite a stressful, if short read! I just wish it had been longer。 The additional material in my edition was interesting too。

Greg Palmer

enjoyable, one of my favorite authors! thoughtful and thought provoking and the science seems solid enough- interesting that she pulled in an outside consultant- the use of genetic engineering is brilliant。

I really loved this book。 While it was short, it packed a big punch。 It was lyrical and softly written。 There wasn't any action or overly "exciting" scenes but when I wasn't reading it I was thinking about wanting to read it。 I also listened to the audiobook and the narrator had the perfect voice for this story。 The idea of space exploration solely for the sake of learning was so pure that it gave me hope for our own future。 I really loved this book。 While it was short, it packed a big punch。 It was lyrical and softly written。 There wasn't any action or overly "exciting" scenes but when I wasn't reading it I was thinking about wanting to read it。 I also listened to the audiobook and the narrator had the perfect voice for this story。 The idea of space exploration solely for the sake of learning was so pure that it gave me hope for our own future。 。。。more

I loved this。 What a difference a modern book written by a woman vs the sci-fi cannon written in the 70s by men。 Some human vs nature struggles and some tensions within the crew and the human vs their own aspirations and ethics but yeah。 Everyone got along! no wars! It was interesting the different worlds and the mission they were on。 It did get a tad preachy a couple of times, but forgivable。

Jeremiah Small

Quite a change from her Small Angry Planet universe。 This one is much closer to hard sci-fi, and quite a good premise。

I finished it this morning and just got super introspective and spent three hours on an existencial crisis。 It's the second sci-fi book I've ever read and I fear I might be spoiled now。 Becky Chambers could easily become a favorite。 I like the way she handled the scientific explanations, loved her character work and the way she builds wonder and tension both。 I finished it this morning and just got super introspective and spent three hours on an existencial crisis。 It's the second sci-fi book I've ever read and I fear I might be spoiled now。 Becky Chambers could easily become a favorite。 I like the way she handled the scientific explanations, loved her character work and the way she builds wonder and tension both。 。。。more

Kind of weird and lovely, this reminded me a little of playing Mass Effect。 I think it would pair well with The Lady Astronaut of Mars by Mary Robinette Kowal。

Absolutely amazing。 Becky Chambers is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors。 I love the way she writes aboit science - it's equally interesting and accessible to people who have no idea what she's talking about as well as people who are actually in some scientific field。 And that is a talent。 This little novella absolutely blew my mind and I enjoyed every second of reading it。 The characters are so wholesome and loveable, the plot is interesting and engaging and the ending was not what I e Absolutely amazing。 Becky Chambers is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors。 I love the way she writes aboit science - it's equally interesting and accessible to people who have no idea what she's talking about as well as people who are actually in some scientific field。 And that is a talent。 This little novella absolutely blew my mind and I enjoyed every second of reading it。 The characters are so wholesome and loveable, the plot is interesting and engaging and the ending was not what I expected but I love it so much。 Now I just want to read everything this woman ever writes。 。。。more

This was lovely。 There are moments of darkness, but it really is an overall optimistic work - about both scientific discoveries and the human condition。 The first-person narration works really well, especially in more melancholy moments, and I did tear up towards the end。It's just an all-around solid work, and I can't think of anything I would change - at least, offhand。 On a first read, I remember thinking that the opening, of the foreshadowing "please read this report so you understand our req This was lovely。 There are moments of darkness, but it really is an overall optimistic work - about both scientific discoveries and the human condition。 The first-person narration works really well, especially in more melancholy moments, and I did tear up towards the end。It's just an all-around solid work, and I can't think of anything I would change - at least, offhand。 On a first read, I remember thinking that the opening, of the foreshadowing "please read this report so you understand our request" was perhaps a bit blunt or went on a bit long, but not enough to detract from a 4。1+ rating。 。。。more

I didn't enjoy this at all。 The science would be interesting if it wasn't told in such a "wow isn't this all so profound?!" kind of way, and that's the only almost-positive I've got。 A very short book, but managed to be boring as well as stylistically outputting for me。 Character-driven, so the pacing is tectonic and full of digressions。 And the characters themselves are stereotypes at a glance, and in depth are just bizarre - there's a guy who just outright doesn't enjoy food。。 eh?!
