Each story is a quick read and gives a great starting point for a deeper conversation on how to apply these concepts in our real lives。Some of the themes are not actual character traits but instead are important themes in Christian life that are vital for children to understand。 Things like putting Jesus first, communion, heaven and the Holy Spirit are sometimes difficult for kids to fully understand but are necessary for growing our faith so I like that they were included。Other sections focus on what sound like negative character qualities like comparing and peer pressure。 They do teach kids that they are negatives but I can see it being easy to get confused when looking at the theme and seeing something negative instead of positive。 Especially for very young kids, which this book is aimed at, remembering which ones we're supposed to do and which we're not supposed to do could be a bit confusing。I wish there was an appendix which included a list of all the character traits and where to find them or that this was included in the table of contents but I just wrote that information in myself for easier reference。 Overall, this is a great resource for teaching kids about good character and I will be using it as a starting point for teaching this to both my boys。 For Tyrion (who's 3) this could be a stand alone curriculum of sorts but Davis (10) definitely needs more in depth study of each of these topics。 Using the verse and scripture references for each story it'll be easy to find the story in a Bible to read with Davis and take the conversation a bit deeper。This book will give us over a years worth of study in Biblical character if we focus on one section a week and find other stories to coordinate with each theme。 I'm looking forward to studying good character with the boys through this fun resource。I received this book through Tyndale Blog Network's reviewer program in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

The stories of the Bible all teach valuable lessons and morals that we should apply to our daily life。 As a young child, however, it can sometimes be difficult to know what those lessons are or how one can apply them to your daily life。 With “The Character Builder’s Bible” your child will learn the stories of the Bible and what lessons those stories teach along with suggestions for applying them to your daily life。I found this to be a very useful way to help my children understand what God wants The stories of the Bible all teach valuable lessons and morals that we should apply to our daily life。 As a young child, however, it can sometimes be difficult to know what those lessons are or how one can apply them to your daily life。 With “The Character Builder’s Bible” your child will learn the stories of the Bible and what lessons those stories teach along with suggestions for applying them to your daily life。I found this to be a very useful way to help my children understand what God wants them to learn。 First we read a Bible story in a way that made it easy for my children to understand。 Then we broke down the meaning of the story, the lesson buried inside。 Besides the suggestions, my children also enjoyed coming up with their own ways to apply the lessons。The illustrations are simple and beautiful with bright, vibrant colors and engaging character depictions。The Bible stories have been simplified to be more easily understood by young children。 Though they have been simplified, they appeared to be very similar to other children’s Bible story collections。The summarizations of the lessons intended to be learned in every story are well thought out, rationalized, and explained。 The manner in which they are written helps to present them in an easy to understand light for young readers。All in all, I found this to be a wonderful way to communicate these lessons to young children。 I would recommend this book to families with young children。 A great one to read together。I received my copy of this book from Tyndale Kids through their blogger program for the sole purpose of providing an honest review and have permission to use an image of the cover artwork above。 。。。more

Before we even talk about the stories in the book, those illustrations! I feel like the book lost focus with this near the end。 However, little ones aren't going to nitpick over this。  It's still a good book—one of our new favorites。My children's thoughts:K (age 7):"Oooh! I love the pictures。 Maybe one day I can draw like that!""I liked reading this book。""This book reminded me that I needed to clean my toys up。 Sometimes I'm not very kind and I don't listen well。 I'm sorry, mama。""My favorite story was the one about baby Jesus。 The picture for that story was really cute。"A (age 4):"I like the Jonah story! The whale ate him!""I learned about kindness in Sunday School! Maybe my teacher read-ed this book!""Will you read this book again? I liked it。"Do you have any favorite Bible story books for children? Since having our first baby and starting to think more seriously about Christian education, I have my eyes peeled for quality children's Bibles and other resources。 So I jumped at the chance to review The Character Builder's Bible: 60 Character-Building Stories from the Bible by Agnes and Salem de Bezenac, creative arts professionals who specialize in creating children's books and multimedia productions。 Specified for ages 4-7 (preschool to 2nd grade), The Character Builder's Bible sounded great Since having our first baby and starting to think more seriously about Christian education, I have my eyes peeled for quality children's Bibles and other resources。 So I jumped at the chance to review The Character Builder's Bible: 60 Character-Building Stories from the Bible by Agnes and Salem de Bezenac, creative arts professionals who specialize in creating children's books and multimedia productions。 Specified for ages 4-7 (preschool to 2nd grade), The Character Builder's Bible sounded great; I loved the front cover illustration and everything about the back cover description。 But despite my initial expectations, I'm sad to say I won't be keeping this book for our home。The Character Builder's Bible has a lot going for it。 Each of the sixty Bible stories—taken from both the Old and New Testaments—are thoughtfully paraphrased, and complete with a short poem that defines or describes the "positive attribute" (such as Patience, Obedience, Gratefulness) linked to the story; a memory verse that reflects the attribute (for example, the verse for Honesty is Proverbs 12:22, "The Lord。。。delights in those who tell the truth" (p 35)); a cartoon meant as a "real-life example"; and a full-page illustration。 In fact, one of my favorite aspects of the book are the illustrations, which, like the cover, are fun, colorful, and eye-catching。 Also, most of the poems do a good job defining or clarifying the story's attribute (for example, Initiative is explained as "I do the things that need to be done even before Mom or Dad asks。 I look for opportunities to help others in their tasks" (p 32))。However, The Character Builder's Bible also has a lot of weaknesses。 To begin with, many of the stories are not linked to character traits specifically, but to values (Beauty, Teamwork) and concepts (God's Love, Heaven, Easter, Worship), which is not bad in and of itself, but I found many words a bit "random" (Availability, Being Responsive, Endurance), vague (Decisions, Flexibility, Asking God), or repetitive (Courage, Boldness); it is also confusing as some words are negative, as in what not to do (Comparing, Peer Pressure)。 On a similar note, there is also sometimes disparity or disconnect between the word and the story (for example, Gentleness is linked to the story in Mark 4 of Jesus calming the storm (p 171), which doesn't make sense to me since this is the most powerful example of Jesus' authority, even over the wind and waves), as well as between the word and the memory verse (for example, the verse for Faithfulness is Proverbs 28:20, "The trustworthy person will get a rich reward" (p 75), which seems to imply a prosperity Gospel rather than a Biblical definition of faithfulness)。 Finally, I was disappointed with the "real-life examples"。 The cartoons are cute but not as practical as they could be; most seem very abstract (often not a true comic, but individual pictures and captions), some are hard to follow or unclear, and others don't connect well or help to explain the concept and how to live it out。Even though my non-recommendation is not due to any particular theological or other serious concerns, and granted it has many positive aspects and may be liked by some parents or caretakers, in my opinion The Character Builder's Bible is just too disjointed and confusing to be beneficial for little readers。 So, while I appreciated the opportunity to read and review it as we begin our search for Christian education material, for our family, I will be skipping this one。Disclaimer: This book was received for free from Tyndale House Publishers in exchange for my review。 Note this book was previously published in 2015 as Big Bible, Little Me by iCharacter Ltd。 。。。more
