Professional advice: Glimpse at summary online before buying any books。 Funny how I realized only months after the purchase that this book was for scientific research, and not the topic I was interested in, user research lol

Very useful with a lot of specific information, but yeah, boring and dry。

A must-have text for the social science researcher。 Creswell lays out solid guidance for dissertations and research proposals。 He outlines the important components of quantitative and qualitative research and provides excellent examples。 I found the glossary very helpful too。 I'm sure I will return to this text repeatedly throughout my journey as a researcher and scholarly writer。 A must-have text for the social science researcher。 Creswell lays out solid guidance for dissertations and research proposals。 He outlines the important components of quantitative and qualitative research and provides excellent examples。 I found the glossary very helpful too。 I'm sure I will return to this text repeatedly throughout my journey as a researcher and scholarly writer。 。。。more

Not merely well written。 Written keeping an aspiring researcher as reader of the work。 Doubles up as a great compilation for research guides as me too。 Covers procedural angles in writing proposals, analytic techniques, philosophy of science subtleties for social science, and very useful to do activities to get a grip on the research method。I thank my friends at UPenn for making this recommendation to me。

I didn’t rate this a 5 star because it’s a riveting read; it is decidedly not。 However, this is easily the best book I’ve read about designing research for my dissertation, and I wish I’d read it at the beginning of my grad school journey rather than at the end。 The science part MSc terrifies me; I can write forever about the literature, but designing, implementing, and analyzing my research study is intimidating。 My brain just does not easily operate in a scientific manner。 This book is so easy I didn’t rate this a 5 star because it’s a riveting read; it is decidedly not。 However, this is easily the best book I’ve read about designing research for my dissertation, and I wish I’d read it at the beginning of my grad school journey rather than at the end。 The science part MSc terrifies me; I can write forever about the literature, but designing, implementing, and analyzing my research study is intimidating。 My brain just does not easily operate in a scientific manner。 This book is so easy to understand and I imagine I will reference it frequently over the next few months as I complete my dissertation。 。。。more

This book is a great starting point for anyone who seeks to understand the mechanisms of how to conduct social research。 It is great both for beginners and for people who already have experience, as it provides both insights and guidance of the processes of deciding which steps are better for your research project。 10/10 would recommend to anyone working on their dissertation!

An academic text book, short, concise。 It is aimed at students researching for a dissertation, and not as comprehensive as other text books, but maybe that is what makes this book a good introduction to research。Also, even if it is technical, academic, it is a short overview I would recommend to design researchers, "UX" researchers, so they can see all that is behind the collection of methods used in product design research。 An academic text book, short, concise。 It is aimed at students researching for a dissertation, and not as comprehensive as other text books, but maybe that is what makes this book a good introduction to research。Also, even if it is technical, academic, it is a short overview I would recommend to design researchers, "UX" researchers, so they can see all that is behind the collection of methods used in product design research。 。。。more

The academic field of research methods describes how different approaches to research can yield insight and results。 Historically, quantitative (i。e。, numerical) approaches have dominated。 Recently, qualitative (i。e。, descriptive in words) approaches have increased。 Also recently, mixed methods approaches have combined the two to tell interesting stories more expeditiously。 In this work, Creswell and Creswell delineate all three methods and help the reader make the most of their research efforts The academic field of research methods describes how different approaches to research can yield insight and results。 Historically, quantitative (i。e。, numerical) approaches have dominated。 Recently, qualitative (i。e。, descriptive in words) approaches have increased。 Also recently, mixed methods approaches have combined the two to tell interesting stories more expeditiously。 In this work, Creswell and Creswell delineate all three methods and help the reader make the most of their research efforts。The fact that this book is in a fifth edition speaks to its strength and staying power。 Copious references to the literature adorn its text。 In addition, concepts – like putting interventions into action through, say, social-justice or feminist perspectives – are covered concisely yet in detail。 Newer, activist approaches provide ways for research to reach outside of the so-called “ivory tower。”Examples of the concepts in action are provided through boxes that illustrate the concepts。 The text gets to the point and does not ramble。 As such, the reader can transit efficiently from ignorance to knowledge to action。 From the examples, one can easily transform this information into a robust product of writing。 Useful strategies like concept-mapping and coding are also exposited and help the reader grasp how to gain further insight into their field。Obviously, those engaged in research efforts are targeted by this work。 It is appropriate for graduate students, teachers, and researchers of many stripes – especially in medicine, education, psychology, and the social sciences。 It provides a helpful way to structure their work。 It is accessible and readable enough that anyone engaged in critical inquiry can gain from this work。 One does not need to be a Harvard professor to appreciate the Creswells’ contribution… though Harvard professors, too, might appreciate their clarity and erudition! 。。。more

This is book is easy to read and informative。 As a new doctoral student, I found the design, the level of content, and the supplemental online resources extremely helpful in providing me with a strong foundation for understanding research approaches。 I am more appreciative of the time and effort required to design and execute research projects。 I have ordered additional materials from Sage to explore research methods that are of interest to me。

Incredibly repetitive and some parts make no sense or are contradictory, but an overall good intro to social science research approaches that it claims to be。
