Summary

Over the course of their 70-year lifespan, sperm whales will easily travel the circumference of the Earth in search of food and the need to breed and find a mate。 Males will travel as far north as the Bering Sea and as far south as Antarctica in order to find enough food to sustain their ways of life—up to 700 squid a day!

Along the way, these massive beasts battle 30-feet-long giant squids, and each other, to sustain their ways of life。

while this is a very informative book, it only discusses one species of whales。 it would be nice if it were called, “Sperm Whales,” but i was led to believe it would be about all species when ordering it。 I guess i’ll have to see if there’s another one about orca whales, because that’s all my child was asking to read about while i was trying to get through this book。

Great Migrations: Whales by Laura Marsh, NonFiction。 The teaching point of this book is to inform children about whales and how the live, act, and survive while keeping the book engaging and fun to read。

There are many migratory species, with one of them including sperm whales。 The book discusses the massive size of sperm whales with regard to their weight, length, and features (brain, heart, flippers, etc。)。 It also provides information on how the whales migrate, where they migrate, and when they do it。 These whales feed on their favorite food- squid, but also on octopus, shark, and fish。 Sometimes the giant squids become their biggest enemy, ranging up to 30 feet in length。 The book ends with There are many migratory species, with one of them including sperm whales。 The book discusses the massive size of sperm whales with regard to their weight, length, and features (brain, heart, flippers, etc。)。 It also provides information on how the whales migrate, where they migrate, and when they do it。 These whales feed on their favorite food- squid, but also on octopus, shark, and fish。 Sometimes the giant squids become their biggest enemy, ranging up to 30 feet in length。 The book ends with some information on how sperm whales communicate, predators they face, and the dangers of pollution to these mammals。 A list of organizations that help sperm whales or other animals is provided。 I thought that this book provided solid information on sperm whales。 However, the title was a little misleading。 Just from the title, I assumed that the book would cover information on several types of whales, not just one。 With that being said, the book was able to give more detailed information on sperm whales, helping me get a better understanding of them。 The copyright page indicated that this book was published by the National Geographic Society。 The National Geographic Society is a nonprofit organization with researchers who collect data and then publish the information to the public。 This ensures that the book is informational and nonfiction。 This book contains many signature text features of informational books including a table of contents, glossary, index, pictures with captions, and headings。 All of these help the reader to find specific terms or subjects easier。 For example, the table of contents provides page numbers for the different subsections in the book so they can flip straight to the correct page。 Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in whales! 。。。more

This book was about Whales and their migration。 More specifically the Sperm Whale。 The book covered just about every topic including: migration patterns, eating habits, fun facts。 This was a great non-fiction read!!! There was so much information。 This book could easily be used for book reports, reading logs, or even as a literary source for a science project。

This is a nonfiction book meant for children 4-8 years of age。 It provides information about whales detailing types of whales, how they communicate, what they look like, etc。 It contains a glossary, an index, and a table of contents。 I gave this book a 4 because it was quite informative。 I love the layout of these National Geographic Kids books。 The pictures are excellent and are of high quality。 I like that the book uses primarily photograph based pictures instead of drawings or clipart。 The la This is a nonfiction book meant for children 4-8 years of age。 It provides information about whales detailing types of whales, how they communicate, what they look like, etc。 It contains a glossary, an index, and a table of contents。 I gave this book a 4 because it was quite informative。 I love the layout of these National Geographic Kids books。 The pictures are excellent and are of high quality。 I like that the book uses primarily photograph based pictures instead of drawings or clipart。 The language in the book does include some more challenging words for young readers such as tons, predator, planet, and mammals。 The book also contains a picture glossary at the end which I particularly like。 I think young readers interested in learning about animals would enjoy this book。 I think this book is useful in teaching children about whales in a more detailed way。 It could be useful to use this book as an introduction and then talk about other animals that live in the ocean。 I think a book like this is useful in teaching children about how non-fiction books work (e。g。, using a table of contents, index, glossary, etc。)。 This is an informative book that I think most children would enjoy。 。。。more

Even as an adult I found something interesting in this book。 The information is mainly about sperm whales and the challenges they face in the wild (there are none in captivity) as well as how important they are to human history (oils for lamps)。 It's a gentle introduction for children into human-caused problems like pollution and over hunting。 Very hopeful information about a species rebounding from the brink of extinction。 Even as an adult I found something interesting in this book。 The information is mainly about sperm whales and the challenges they face in the wild (there are none in captivity) as well as how important they are to human history (oils for lamps)。 It's a gentle introduction for children into human-caused problems like pollution and over hunting。 Very hopeful information about a species rebounding from the brink of extinction。 。。。more

Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators on the planet。 Their teeth are 10 inches long and they only have them on their lower jaw (40 ish of them)。 Their blowholes are "s" shaped。 Males stop growing when they are 50 years old。 Females stop when they are 30。 The 2 genders swim in separate pods--the largest and oldest males swim alone。 Giant squid have eyes the size of dinner plates (the largest on the planet)。 Sperm whales are the largest toothed predators on the planet。 Their teeth are 10 inches long and they only have them on their lower jaw (40 ish of them)。 Their blowholes are "s" shaped。 Males stop growing when they are 50 years old。 Females stop when they are 30。 The 2 genders swim in separate pods--the largest and oldest males swim alone。 Giant squid have eyes the size of dinner plates (the largest on the planet)。 。。。more

This nicely-presented book focuses on sperm whales and the great migrations they make across the vastness of the ocean。 While the book focuses mainly on the animals and their behavior, I am happy to report that animal welfare and environmental issues are included in the overview。 Young readers are informed:Whale products were once used to make cosmetics, creams, and candles。。。。During the 1700, 1800s, and into the 1900s, a large number of whales were killed by people。 Sperm whales were hunted for This nicely-presented book focuses on sperm whales and the great migrations they make across the vastness of the ocean。 While the book focuses mainly on the animals and their behavior, I am happy to report that animal welfare and environmental issues are included in the overview。 Young readers are informed:Whale products were once used to make cosmetics, creams, and candles。。。。During the 1700, 1800s, and into the 1900s, a large number of whales were killed by people。 Sperm whales were hunted for their spermaceti and their oil, which were used to light lamps and make candle wax。 Hunters also wanted sperm whales for their ambergris, a material used in perfume。 Kerosene later replaced whale oil as a way to light lamps。 Whaling was outlawed in the 1980s。 the number of sperm whales has increased。 Now there are many sperm whales in our oceans, but illegal whaling still happens。 Yes, Japan has created an entire industry around it。Pollution also cited as a continuing threat to whales and other underwater life。 However, we are told:But there is good news。 Organizations are working to stop oil spills and other pollutants in our oceans。 People are using fewer plastic bags that may end up in the oceans and hurt sea animals。Also, researchers are discovering why whales get stranded and what can be done about it。And there are organizations like Greenpeace working to stop illegal whaling。 The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is another group that enforces whaling laws and saves whales from being killed。 I applaud the writers for including important animal protection information and giving a shout-out to Sea Shepherd。 。。。more
