Summary

Started really well, finished really well but the middle was just not for me。 Too many same named characters, too many weird sex moments, too much pretentiousness。 Ultimately, reminiscent of a prospector - sifting through a whole lot of mud for a couple of gold nuggets。

Is the ending of a book worth it? It was for this magical realist classic。 This book made me realise that I wasn't incredibly suited for this genre。 The writing was absolutely beautiful, very thought provoking but a lot of it was also incredibly disturbing---it is so full of debauchery, so full of immorality with so many deaths told in a detached, almost insignificant manner。 I had to admit that midway i was close to dnf-ing this book。 The characters felt rather repetitive, their flaws, their su Is the ending of a book worth it?

This was quite a complicated book。 And ordeal of sorts。 There's a lot going on here。 A whole lot。 It's not too difficult to become lost and a bit confused within these pages。 It took me 4 months to read because I needed occasional breaks to catch my breath。 Lots of characters and most of them sharing the same names。 Lots of births and deaths and a whole array of fantastic riveting happenings within the village of macondo This was quite a complicated book。 And ordeal of sorts。 There's a lot going on here。 A whole lot。 It's not too difficult to become lost and a bit confused within these pages。 It took me 4 months to read because I needed occasional breaks to catch my breath。 Lots of characters and most of them sharing the same names。 Lots of births and deaths and a whole array of fantastic riveting happenings within the village of macondo 。。。more

This book is one of the most difficult to understand but one of the ones I liked the most, most of the characters are connected so to understand the history of one you must understand that of another, the history of how they founded a town by themselves and how It is getting populated is the best of all history, I highly recommend it even if it has many pages, 10/10

A great story。 If you do the audio version I suggest you look up a family tree beforehand and make small notes that clarify who is who。 It is very character heavy and the men's names repeat with each generation。 A great story。 If you do the audio version I suggest you look up a family tree beforehand and make small notes that clarify who is who。 It is very character heavy and the men's names repeat with each generation。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I had this book hyped up for me for how good it is, and I must admit that the writing style is rather beautiful and poetic。 That part kept me reading。 About halfway through the book, I lost motivation to keep reading due to the repetitiveness of the characters, which after finishing now I understand that's part of the point。 Be that as it may, I was not amazed or in love by the end of the book。 I didn't personally feel that this book was about solitude despite some characters experiencing solita I had this book hyped up for me for how good it is, and I must admit that the writing style is rather beautiful and poetic。 That part kept me reading。 About halfway through the book, I lost motivation to keep reading due to the repetitiveness of the characters, which after finishing now I understand that's part of the point。 Be that as it may, I was not amazed or in love by the end of the book。 I didn't personally feel that this book was about solitude despite some characters experiencing solitary moments like Rebecca and such。。。and Rebecca wasn't even related by blood! I just kept thinking of how many family ties these people have and how fortunate they are despite the terrible things that kept happening to them, and in that sense, they are not alone。 But I understand they have their own moments and that they don't necessarily feel so connected outside of blood。I'm not sure what it is I really wanted from this book。 I think I need to think about my experience, especially with the abruptness of the ending。 Despite that wrap up of the town being destroyed in one fell swoop rather cleanly, I feel like that did the Buendias so dirty。 What a tragic, magical book。 I wish it wasn't so tragic。 。。。more

I may have liked this book more if I read it with a class discussing what the heck it was talking about。 I'm sure some of it I didn't get because I'm far enough removed from the time period that it was talking about。 There was a lot of, "Wait! Did it just say what I think it said? Yes, it did!" And a good portion of it was very strange。 Like a weird dream that I would wake up from and tell everyone about because it was just that odd。 Very memorable。 I may have liked this book more if I read it with a class discussing what the heck it was talking about。 I'm sure some of it I didn't get because I'm far enough removed from the time period that it was talking about。 There was a lot of, "Wait! It is gripping and it made me realise how unique every culture is, but human behavior patterns remain the same in every country and every period of human history。 The writting style is beautiful, especially with the sudden time jumps or retrospectives (Aureliano Buendia's execution for example)。It is a classic example of magic realism, which is not my favourite that explains the rating。 It is gripping and it made me realise how unique every culture is, but human behavior patterns remain the same in every country and every period of human history。 The writting style is beautiful, especially with the sudden time jumps or retrospectives (Aureliano Buendia's execution for example)。It is a classic example of magic realism, which is not my favourite that explains the rating。 。。。more

KEEPING UP WITH THE BUENDIAS。 brilliant。 entertainingly chaotic。 tickles the imagination。 basically kuwtk but about century-old chikas of war, politics, magic, latin american culture, romance & scandals set in a remote South American town。 it uses heavy narrative (i personally prefer a good narrative-to-dialogue balance) and the names of characters will drive you insane。 overall, not an easy read but definitely rewarding。

This was not an easy read but I appreciate the beauty of the text。 Garcia has an almost poetic way of creating imagery, often using words that are often not part of my vocabulary。 In several cases, I had to look them up。I read the first 100 pages and had to start again, because I was hopelessly lost! I even read a couple of books in between to clear my head。 Once I realized the genre was magical realism, I was able to lose myself in the story and found most of it very engaging。 This is one of my This was not an easy read but I appreciate the beauty of the text。 Garcia has an almost poetic way of creating imagery, often using words that are often not part of my vocabulary。 In several cases, I had to look them up。I read the first 100 pages and had to start again, because I was hopelessly lost!
