Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the first novel in the beloved Regency-set world of her charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix。

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound。 From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood。 A proper duke should be imperious and aloof。 A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable。

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter。 The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London。 Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit。 But no one truly desires her。 She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen。

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings。 Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood。 Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option。 If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him。 Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar。

The plan works like a charm—at first。 But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule。。。

This novel includes the 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story。

I did not like this book。 None of the characters are likable and the whole plot is just ridiculous。 I didn't even finish the second epilogue because I didn't care。 Two thumbs way down。 I did not like this book。 None of the characters are likable and the whole plot is just ridiculous。 I didn't even finish the second epilogue because I didn't care。 Two thumbs way down。 。。。more

The show was way better than this book was, and perhaps that tainted my perception while reading it, but this was not nearly as good as the Shonda adaptation。

This was so entertaining! The show did a pretty good job at keeping track of the book。 I'm honestly not sure if I'll continue the series just cause there's other books I want to read more。 I did like the happy ending and how Quinn fleshed out Simon's feelings especially at the end about having children。 She did a great job at that。 Was not a fan of the erotic bits but it was less than the TV show atleast。 This was so entertaining! I cannot in good faith give this book more than 1 star。 At this point I'm sure a lot of you know what kind scene is feature by the end, and how fucked up it is。 That alone is, of course, enough reason for the raiting, but even without that the story was。。。 Kind of just there, nothing special。 Even ignoring alll the problematic behavior, this book was below average and not a single character made me excited about the series (except Colin, i love Colin)。 So it was a boring book AND problematic?

Was very interested in reading this book based on the hype from the Netflix series。 Honestly a waste of time and money。 The book had little to no substance。

I read the novel after watching The Bridgertons (season 1) on Netflix。 I’m glad I read it。 The Netflix series was closely tied to the novel but there were a few minor differences in the plot line。 I loved being able to get inside the characters’ heads and will definitely continue reading the series!

。。。more

Lovely lighthearted romance novel, already ordered the second book! And I have to watch the Netflix show, too。

Not for me。It started off slow, and then picked up and got a bit interesting and then almost immediately nose-dived after it got interesting and never quite stopped declining to the point where I ended up hating most of the characters。

I enjoyed the book as much as I enjoyed the Netflix series! And I liked the two epilogues!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ughh I wanted to DNF this book so badly in the midway but I kept reading it only for the sake of my friend because it's one of her favorite books。 I used to hate romance as a genre and decided to give it a try with this book for my friend and honestly, I've never been this disappointed by a book! None of the actions done by the protagonists are justifiable。 The duke lying to her and her taking advantage of his situation are THE examples of violation and deception。 Ughh I wanted to DNF this book so badly in the midway but I kept reading it only for the sake of my friend because it's one of her favorite books。 I used to hate romance as a genre and decided to give it a try with this book for my friend and honestly, I've never been this disappointed by a book!

Ok so here's the deal。 I read this, like many others recently I'm sure, because I watched the Netflix adaptation and loved it。 I already knew the main plot points and how it would end, but there were some details and things that were changed between the page and the screen。 Unfortunately, I feel like the changes made to the adaptation were better than how things happened in the book。 Specifically, the bit with Daphne making。。。 bad choices to try and get pregnant。 I would've given this book a 4/5 Ok so here's the deal。 I read this, like many others recently I'm sure, because I watched the Netflix adaptation and loved it。 I already knew the main plot points and how it would end, but there were some details and things that were changed between the page and the screen。 Unfortunately, I feel like the changes made to the adaptation were better than how things happened in the book。 Specifically, the bit with Daphne making。。。 bad choices to try and get pregnant。 I would've given this book a 4/5 because the romance is cute and the writing is very witty and I love some good banter, but the fact that the scene in the show was more of a morally grey area than what she did in the book took off a star for me。 We don't stan or condone r*pe。 And I feel like it was brushed off a little too cavalierly。 But there you go。 Will I read the rest of the series? Probably。 Do I hope the author doesn't have similar scenes? Yes I do。 。。。more

Though I do not typically read romances, my attention was caught by the Bridgerton Netflix series and I decided to give the books a try。 I found Quinn’s writing witty and entertaining as well as moving。 She has a way of writing in third person that switches between character perspectives suddenly but not to create confusion。 She makes balancing the thoughts of two main characters (and an abundance of side characters) simple and understandable。

I wish I would have read this before watching the show because I feel I would have enjoyed it more before knowing what was going to happen of course。 I plan to read the rest before the show continues on Netflix。 It was a wonderful love story to get lost in。 I plan on reading the rest in this series and anything else Julia Quinn has available。

Fun read, but I actually liked the Netflix series better because it fleshes out more characters and is visually stunning。 Jane Austen is better lol。

that was definitely something。okay。 the book itself was pretty decent - the plot was great and all。 my issue with this is:a) i absolutely despise daphne。b) it gets a bit boring。i feel like simon married her only because he was scared about her reputation。 i don't think he actually loved daphne, at least not at that moment。 my opinion is that he cared for her, and she simply guilt tripped him into doing something he didn't want。also, the part where he gets drunk is disgusting。 daphne takes comple that was definitely something。okay。 the book itself was pretty decent - the plot was great and all。 my issue with this is:a) i absolutely despise daphne。b) it gets a bit boring。i feel like simon married her only because he was scared about her reputation。 i don't think he actually loved daphne, at least not at that moment。 my opinion is that he cared for her, and she simply guilt tripped him into doing something he didn't want。also, the part where he gets drunk is disgusting。 daphne takes complete advantage of his vulnerability and does something he absolutely doesn't want to do, and has told her multiple times。all in all, it's a pretty okay book, though! 。。。more

Initially I thought the characters had great chemistry so I probably would have given a higher rating if it weren't for the rape scene in one of the later chapters。 Romanticising sexual assault is a big no-no!! Loved the series but the book is just very poorly written。 Complete lack of creativity and writing skills。 It’s actually painful to read。 I gave one additional star just because it inspired Shonda to create a really nice, relaxing tv show。
