Summary

The Silent Patient by way of Stephen King: Parker, a young, overconfident psychiatrist new to his job at a mental asylum miscalculates catastrophically when he undertakes curing a mysterious and profoundly dangerous patient。

In a series of online posts, Parker H。, a young psychiatrist, chronicles the harrowing account of his time working at a dreary mental hospital in New England。 Through this internet message board, Parker hopes to communicate with the world his effort to cure one bewildering patient。

We learn, as Parker did on his first day at the hospital, of the facility’s most difficult, profoundly dangerous case—a forty-year-old man who was originally admitted to the hospital at age six。 This patient has no known diagnosis。 His symptoms seem to evolve over time。 Every person who has attempted to treat him has been driven to madness or suicide。

Desperate and fearful, the hospital’s directors keep him strictly confined and allow minimal contact with staff for their own safety, convinced that releasing him would unleash catastrophe upon the outside world。 Parker, brilliant and overconfident, takes it upon himself to discover what ails this patient and finally cure him。 But from his first encounter with the mysterious patient, things spiral out of control and, facing a possibility beyond his wildest imaginings, Parker is forced to question everything he thought he knew。

Fans of Sarah Pinborough’s Behind Her Eyes and Paul Tremblay’s The Cabin at the End of the World will be riveted by Jasper DeWitt’s astonishing debut。

3。5⭐It was pretty good。 There were some creepy parts and generally, it kept my interest。 But, honestly, I felt there was a real opportunity here to scare the crap out of the audience。 The author missed a few chances to really take the characters further and draw out that horror and fear。 And, the ending was only a slight twist and left the reader kind of going ok, pretty good, but it really could've been great。 3。5⭐It was pretty good。 There were some creepy parts and generally, it kept my interest。 But, honestly, I felt there was a real opportunity here to scare the crap out of the audience。 The author missed a few chances to really take the characters further and draw out that horror and fear。 And, the ending was only a slight twist and left the reader kind of going ok, pretty good, but it really could've been great。 。。。more

2/5 starsThe book wasn't horrible but it wasn’t good either。 It read like something you'd find on a r/nosleep forum on reddit which I understand is the whole point。 Maybe I'm desensitized to horror but it wasn’t all that scary in my opinion。 The good aspects:It was a fast read and kept me engaged。 I definitely wanted to know what was going to happen next。 The negative aspect:The narrator was fully unlikable and pretentious。 I honestly cannot tell of the narrator is supposed to be egotistical or 2/5 starsThe book wasn't horrible but it wasn’t good either。 It read like something you'd find on a r/nosleep forum on reddit which I understand is the whole point。 Maybe I'm desensitized to horror but it wasn’t all that scary in my opinion。 The good aspects:It was a fast read and kept me engaged。 I definitely wanted to know what was going to happen next。 The negative aspect:The narrator was fully unlikable and pretentious。 I honestly cannot tell of the narrator is supposed to be egotistical or are we supposed to be impressed by his intelligence? He was annoyingly full of himself and it really didn't serve an important purpose in the story。 Has the author ever been to a psychiatric ward before? Because nothing he described was even remotely accurate。 It seemed like he got all of his information from cheap horror movies that take place in "scary" mental asylums。 Lastly, my biggest issue with the novel, is the demonization of certian mental illnesses, especially Dissociative Identity Disorder。 There was absolutely no reason for D。I。D。 to have even been brought up and all it did was further enforce the already impenetrable negative stigma surrounding the disorder by continuing the "monster persona" trope。 It's a decent read if you want something quick and entertaining but keep a critical mindset when going into it。 。。。more

This has been on my must-reads list for a while now and I gladly devoured it in two sittings。 The first thing to bear in mind is that our main character, Parker, is writing his story in an online medical forum, therefore the chapters are addressed to an audience。 This doesn't take away from the story however, it's cleverly crafted so it's only the first paragraph or two and then it feels like a current storyline。 Parker is really the only person you get a backstory on。 You feel for him and know This has been on my must-reads list for a while now and I gladly devoured it in two sittings。 The first thing to bear in mind is that our main character, Parker, is writing his story in an online medical forum, therefore the chapters are addressed to an audience。 This doesn't take away from the story however, it's cleverly crafted so it's only the first paragraph or two and then it feels like a current storyline。 Parker is really the only person you get a backstory on。 You feel for him and know he has good intentions when it comes to treating the incurable patient - known as Joe。 He grows as a medical professional which is wonderful to see as he becomes a better doctor。 When it comes down to Joe, you slowly get bits and pieces of his backstory but you don't know what to believe。 As Parker uncovers more of Joe's files, you are left with an intense mystery of wondering why people become insane after spending time with Joe。 These people are literally driven to madness or suicide - with you wondering how this is possible。 You're left to either supernatural forces or someone so lost in their psyche that they are the ultimate master manipulator。 This was a creepypasta on Reddit (from my knowledge) that gained so much popularity that it became a book。 If you're into this style of writing, then this will be an overall good read for you。 I feel like it's worth mentioning since some are not into this writing format。 The ending fell a bit flat for me。 I guess it felt rushed after so much anticipation was built-up and it felt a little underwhelming after everything that happens。 There is an open-ended question as to what exactly Joe's condition is when the book ends。 I'm going to put it here to be very clear: huge trigger warning。 This is an extremely dark book。 You'll encounter gruesome scenes that are hard to read。 Don't read this if you feel like it's going to negatively impact you or if you are not emotionally ready。 Overall a good, quick read。 While it didn't blow my mind like it did some people, it was enjoyable and extremely creepy。 It's not scary, more so unsettling。 I'd say if you're a fan of asylums or psychological horror, you'll enjoy this。 (4。5 stars) 。。。more

Easy to read book with a nice plot。 Loved how the author jumped straight into action。 A little disappointed by the epilogue。

3。5*** Very good and chilling imagery!! Only down side is how DeWitt tried to use such huge- extravagant words in the first chapter to make a “big impression” and it kinda was annoying。 Definitely showed that it’s his first novel lol。 I loved buddy reading this with my mom- as I’ve been away at college :) (been getting her into reading more hehe!)

3。85 starsThis is a super fast on the edge of your seat thriller that I actually really enjoyed。 It has a good mixture of psychological twists and horror throughout that makes it a perfect gothic read for me。 I love when you constantly have to ask “are these people actually seeing these things or are they going insane?”Nothing extremely profound but parts of the book still hurt my heart and boggled my mind。

Wow。 What can I say about THE PATIENT? I loved this twist on asylum patient story。 Joe, a six year old boy, was admitted to CSA (Connecticut State Asylum) for night terrors。 After his short visit, he was released to go back home due to his condition seeming to be just a typical childhood nightmare。 The diagnosis changed once he was re-admitted the next day acting completely unlike the innocent six year old boy CSA saw before。 After 35 years of confinement, Parker, the newest and youngest psychia Wow。 What can I say about THE PATIENT? 3。5 stars。 Couldn’t put this compulsive book down! It wasn’t the best writing but it sure pulled you in from the outset。 It wasn’t as scary as I was expecting but certainly creepy。 The only major negative is the ending which was quite a letdown after the buildup and felt rushed。

4。5 Rounded DownThis book was a really good story line! However I docked half a star simply because it was SO。 WORDY! (Like stuff that didn’t even pertain to the guts of the story…i。e。 “he got an ax from a bench in the attic。 It was next to a throw down fire escape ladder。) No need for the mention of the ladder at all。 Also the ending was a tad bit more rushed than I would have liked but did tie everything up。 This book kept me reading。 There were definitely some disturbing pieces in this story 4。5 Rounded DownThis book was a really good story line! I was warned that I might encounter a ton of grammatical errors, however I was lucky to snag a 2021 edition so I didn't have that issue。As for my thoughts I will say this has 2 of my all time favorite things。 #1 a story that takes place in a mental hospital (for the most part), and #2 it's told through the perspective of Parker posting on a forum for medical professionals。 So right from the start I was intrigued and stayed hooked to the end。 I had to know the full story and since the book is onl I was warned that I might encounter a ton of grammatical errors, however I was lucky to snag a 2021 edition so I didn't have that issue。As for my thoughts I will say this has 2 of my all time favorite things。 #1 a story that takes place in a mental hospital (for the most part), and #2 it's told through the perspective of Parker posting on a forum for medical professionals。 So right from the start I was intrigued and stayed hooked to the end。 I had to know the full story and since the book is only 205 pages it didn't take long at all to read。 While I really, really enjoyed it it also had as horror sometimes does an unbelievable factor to it (example: monsters exist)。 I was hoping for a more believable explanation which would have been more terrifying to me personally。 But overall great story would read more from this author, AND I think this is one I can confidently recommend to anyone seeking a horror recommendation。 。。。more

。。。more

This is basically a self-insert fanfiction by a guy who watched an episode of Criminal Minds, bought a thesaurus, and thought he could write from a psychologist's POV。 The women exist to stroke his ego and all the psychology-related dialogue feels copy-pasted from a textbook。 At least it was short。 This is basically a self-insert fanfiction by a guy who watched an episode of Criminal Minds, bought a thesaurus, and thought he could write from a psychologist's POV。 The women exist to stroke his ego and all the psychology-related dialogue feels copy-pasted from a textbook。 At least it was short。 。。。more
