This was a re-read for me。 I read it years ago when it was first released and I loved it, it was my favorite Bridgeton story: the friends-to-lovers trope, the blossoming of Penelope, the intrigue。 With Netflix taking on the Bridgertons, I decided to revisit Colin and Penelope, and I did so as a read-aloud。 Alas, sometimes it's best not to retravel over certain memory lanes。 It did not fare so well in my estimation the second time around。I still enjoyed watching Penelope come into herself, but th This was a re-read for me。 I read it years ago when it was first released and I loved it, it was my favorite Bridgeton story: the friends-to-lovers trope, the blossoming of Penelope, the intrigue。 With Netflix taking on the Bridgertons, I decided to revisit Colin and Penelope, and I did so as a read-aloud。 Alas, sometimes it's best not to retravel over certain memory lanes。 It did not fare so well in my estimation the second time around。I still enjoyed watching Penelope come into herself, but this time it was tinged with annoyance at how it all played out。 1) After making her so very competent, successfully pulling off Lady W for so long, Ms。 Quinn renders her utterly helpless as Mrs。 Bridgerton。 When disaster is poised to strike, Penelope resorts to dithering and looking to Colin can save the day。 Argh。 2) Penelope is so very very thankful that Colin has deigned to love her。 It gets tiresome listening to her remark upon her own unworthiness incessantly。 3) Colin acts like a spoiled child。 He whines, feels sorry for himself and snaps constantly - although we are told each and every time that such behaviors are very un-Colinlike - and then he does them again。 4) Reading the book aloud highlighted how much repetition there is。 Overall, could use a bit of an edit。 。。。more

If you are reading (or listening which I recommend because the series doesn’t require dedicated attention) because of the show, read this first。 Very similar vibe to the show and interactions between the characters。

I read this book first, because I wanted to。 I enjoyed immensely and loved to see more of Penelope。 Such a good book。 Wish it was longer

I've said it so many times now, that my favorite thing about the Bridgerton books is that they aren't the same book with the same couple over and over。 Colin and Penelope are different because they're sort of friends before anything else。 Okay that's not the right word - Penelope is head over heels in love with the older brother of her best friend and is that way for 7 years I think。 Like To Sir Philip, it's kind of refreshing to have an older heroine (though at 28 she isn't exactly geriatric)。 I've said it so many times now, that my favorite thing about the Bridgerton books is that they aren't the same book with the same couple over and over。 Colin and Penelope are different because they're sort of friends before anything else。 Okay that's not the right word - Penelope is head over heels in love with the older brother of her best friend and is that way for 7 years I think。 Like To Sir Philip, it's kind of refreshing to have an older heroine (though at 28 she isn't exactly geriatric)。 She's still naive in a way but she has a very different way of looking at the world from the previous heroines。 Even Colin has a completely different view of things- and a desire to be something more than he already is。 。。。more

Another story in the Bridgerton family saga, this time it is the third child/son, Colin, and his path to the altar。No spoilers! I really enjoyed this one!

WHY IS IT CONSTANTLY REITERATED THAT PENELOPE IS NOW ATTRACTIVE BECAUSE SHE'S LOST WEIGHT????? colin and penelope in the previous books and the 2nd epilogues are nothing like this disaster。 none of it was satisfying。 julia cannot write a man who isn't possessive and fuelled by his penis。 she peaked with anthony's traumatised ass and every other man is just disappointing in this series。 if i'm not convinced he would suck bee venom out his wife's tiddy, then he isn't worth my time。 。。。more

Well, every other element of this novel was super well crafted。 The dialog flowed naturally and felt realistic, the sibling dynamic was almost perfect, the setting was fantastic, and Penelope as a character was wonderful。 She was flawed and human; I loved how she saw the world, even if it didn't see her。 Penelope's relationship with the Bridgerton family as a whole was, for the most part, also well done。 Eloise and Penelope had an amazing friendship, and I enjoyed every page that featured Hyacinth。 I liked that the first few chapters moved through time, and thought that the first 100 pages or so were absolutely hilarious。 “No one knows as well as I how much nonsense is printed in books。”Now, onto the problem with this book; I didn't like the romance。 More specifically, I didn't like the power imbalance between the two lovers, nor did I like how possessive Colin became。 There were more than a few scenes where he grabs and yanks Penelope around。 He scolds her, yells at her, and portions from his PoV imply that he wants her to fear him。 Colin was angry more often than not, and the things that stoked his anger weren't his to be angry about。 Penelope was doing something amazing and independent: he had no right to assume that he knew what was best for her because he was a man。 I recognize that this sort of romance may be true to the Regency era, but seeing as it was written in the 21st century, I didn't appreciate how a toxic relationship was romanticized。 “It's only through sheer force and luck that she's yet to take over the world。”Overall, I really loved every moment of this story the characters spent away from the romance。 Those parts of the book easily get four stars。 But the romance, which was most of the story, gets two, maybe even one。 Since the rankings are so split, I settled on three stars。 Don't get me wrong, most of this book was light and fun。 The romance just needed some a lot of work。 。。。more

I devoured this story in 2 days, I so wanted to know what happened to Penelope, the unvisible "ugly duckling" of the Society。 Colin, I am afraid, is only a side-kick in this story, the real heroine is Penelope - despite the title。 The storyline is, as always in the Bridgerton series so far, a bit more feminist than what one would have guessed, but to be fair, there were quite many strong women in the early 1800s even on the British Isles and this book, behind all the romance, is a good reminder。 I devoured this story in 2 days, I so wanted to know what happened to Penelope, the unvisible "ugly duckling" of the Society。 Colin, I am afraid, is only a side-kick in this story, the real heroine is Penelope - despite the title。 The storyline is, as always in the Bridgerton series so far, a bit more feminist than what one would have guessed, but to be fair, there were quite many strong women in the early 1800s even on the British Isles and this book, behind all the romance, is a good reminder。 This is, after all, the time when or just before Ada Lovelace, Eleanor Code, Florence Nightingale rose。 What this book is also a good reminder of is that common feelings, like envy, and actions, like going to the toilet, did exist even in the fanciest of romantic stories:-) 。。。more

Four stars for Penelope Featherington! And not even for the romance, just for her。 I love her so much。 She is the best character so far。Colin is one of my favorite Bridgertons and I didn't really feel like this book did him justice。 He didn't seem like the same Colin as from other books。 Friends to lovers is my favorite kind of romances but I wasn't really feeling it in this one。 Maybe it was because I was so invested in Penelope that the romance was a side note compared to what Penelope had goi Four stars for Penelope Featherington! I had high hopes for this book and I think I might have liked it better if I would not have seen the tv series first。 This book follows the love story of Colin and Penelope which I was pretty excited for。 Except, I found Colin to be rather boring in this book。 The first 60% of the book was the uncovering of Lady Wistledown which the Netflix show kind of ruined in the first season。 Then when you finally get to the romance of Colin and Penelope i found it to be kind of boring and uneventful。 I wis I had high hopes for this book and I think I might have liked it better if I would not have seen the tv series first。 This book follows the love story of Colin and Penelope which I was pretty excited for。 Except, I found Colin to be rather boring in this book。 The first 60% of the book was the uncovering of Lady Wistledown which the Netflix show kind of ruined in the first season。 Then when you finally get to the romance of Colin and Penelope i found it to be kind of boring and uneventful。 I wish I could experience reading this book not already knowing who Lady Wistledown is。。。maybe then I would have found it to be more interesting。 。。。more

Another book, another Bridgerton sibling packed off into the sunset to live a life of marital bliss after a series of completely avoidable misunderstandings。 This time it is Colin’s turn to find love and he finds it with Penelope Featherington, the awkward and unpopular spinster who has been in love with him since childhood。 However, Penelope has a lot more going on beneath the surface than her friends and family might expect。 This addition to the Bridgerton series was broadly very fun though on Another book, another Bridgerton sibling packed off into the sunset to live a life of marital bliss after a series of completely avoidable misunderstandings。 This time it is Colin’s turn to find love and he finds it with Penelope Featherington, the awkward and unpopular spinster who has been in love with him since childhood。 However, Penelope has a lot more going on beneath the surface than her friends and family might expect。 This addition to the Bridgerton series was broadly very fun though once again I did find myself getting frustrated by the way that everyone in these books is incapable of actually saying what they mean and how they are feeling in a non-cryptic way。 But if you liked the other books in this series and you’re able to turn off that nit-picking, cynical part of your brain, you should enjoy this book。 。。。more

Same as BeforeAll of the Bridgerton novels are fun, but the more I read, the more obvious it becomes that all the characters are far too similar。 Quinn's style is breezy and fun but the protagonists all have the same wittiness and sense of humor that is exactly what all the lead men are looking for。 Colin is not as interesting as the other male lead's, and his romance with Penelope didn't feel logical。 Same as BeforeAll of the Bridgerton novels are fun, but the more I read, the more obvious it becomes that all the characters are far too similar。 Quinn's style is breezy and fun but the protagonists all have the same wittiness and sense of humor that is exactly what all the lead men are looking for。 Colin is not as interesting as the other male lead's, and his romance with Penelope didn't feel logical。 。。。more
