Summary

From Peter Mayle, a wonderful new novel steeped in wine—and the business of wine-and set in, bien sur, Provence。
Max Skinner is not exactly setting the London financial world on fire-and when his supervisor steals his biggest client, it’s definitely time to inspect the vineyard in Provence that his recently departed uncle left him。 Heartily and happily distracted upon his arrival by the landscape, the weather, and the food - not to mention the gorgeous notaire handling the estate and the stunning owner of the local bistro - Max almost forgets about his inherited property。
Which might have been a good idea, because the wine produced there is swill。 But then why, Max has to wonder, is his caretaker so anxious to acquire the land? When a beautiful young woman from California arrives with what might be a legitimate claim on the estate, and knowledge of vineyards that far outstrips Max’s own, the plot begins its twists and turns into and out of truly wonderful complications and resolutions。
This is luscious reading-soothing us with the sensual wonders of Provence while it tells a fascinating tale of the hugely lucrative and competitive boutique-wine trade。 It is Peter Mayle’s most satisfying, most delectable novel yet。

The plot is a bit all over the place, especially in the last 50 pages or so。 Furthermore, some interesting plot devices are not exploited at all。 There's romance, and drama, some comic situations and some fawning over French cuisine and winemaking (this part is worth the read)。 Otherwise the characters are quite bland and most of the French characters are caricatures。 。。。more

A perfect summer read。

A fun book! Mayle seems to enjoy the telling of this story。

Rachel

Very easy and low energy read。 Not much plot but a pleasant diversion for a summer weekend afternoon。

Rachel Anne

Easy read- dragged in a couple spots but no other real complaints。

A fun easy read。 Perfect for a lazy day。 Not much substance, but quite entertaining。 I liked most of it, but wish the author would not stereotype women as much as he did in this book。

Good twistsI loved the balance of intrigue and plot twists that weren’t always predictable。 Also I enjoyed the way the author brought forward insights into the various nationalities of each character in a humorous but inclusive way。 Reading the book was relaxing and entertaining。

A meh year。 Listened to this on this year's road trip。 I don't think I finished it, but I'm not positive。 A meh year。 Listened to this on this year's road trip。 I don't think I finished it, but I'm not positive。 。。。more

A rare occasion when I recommend a movie over the book, but I definitely think the screenwriting added significant pluses and improved on the rather tepid story of the book。

Jenni

It should be called “ A Boring Year”

Perfect summer read… poolside… glas of wine…

Very enjoyable read。 Not the kind of book that I’d tell anyone that “they have to read it,” but it’s perfect for anyone who wants a low pressure story to enjoy。

If you're looking for a light-hearted quick summer read to get the ball roll after a reading slump, this may be the book for you。 I suppose I would classify it as completely average, nothing too extraordinary, but I had fun basking in the wholesome ambiance。 For such a short book, Mayle is able to incorporate a surprising amount of plot twists in my opinion。 I wasn't expecting so much substance。 While it is light-hearted, I wouldn't call it cheesy。 The writing is fluent and easy to read。 Nothing If you're looking for a light-hearted quick summer read to get the ball roll after a reading slump, this may be the book for you。 I suppose I would classify it as completely average, nothing too extraordinary, but I had fun basking in the wholesome ambiance。 For such a short book, Mayle is able to incorporate a surprising amount of plot twists in my opinion。 I wasn't expecting so much substance。 While it is light-hearted, I wouldn't call it cheesy。 The writing is fluent and easy to read。 Nothing groundbreaking here, but a good break between books。 。。。more

Cozy and sweet with a setting I enjoyed luxuriating in。

Good easy read。 Would give it 3。5 stars。 The “reporting the wine to police situation” doesn’t make a lot of sense to me - why not just stop selling it to them? but hey who cares。

Fun read & shared with others who might feel that way too!

Avedon Arcadio

I found this to be terribly amateurish in prose and story。 Not to mention the constant repetition of names became quickly annoying。 I think he thought himself to be clever in how he named his characters and so he felt he had to keep repeating their names in full? Or the fact that he’s still using portions of French as if we understood it? Also the audio book is incredibly cringeworthy and a bit racist。 The narrator attempts to do imitations of accents which were shocking and terrible。

Bruce Harpham

I enjoyed this novel - a tale of an Englishman who leaves the London financial world behind to move to France。 I found the combination of mystery and romance intriguing。 The French characters were fun, especially the housekeeper (Madame Passepartout)。 The novel was at its past in capturing the disorientation of an English speaker moving to France。 I look forward to seeing the movie adaptation as well。

Stacey Wallington

I just love this book but it’s one of my favourite films too。 The book is a bit different to the film but both great for escapism。 :)

What I found a bit baffling about the book is that initially it keeps sort of being insinuated somehow that Max and Christie should like, hook up。 What?! They are cousins。 Like when the cleaning lady assumes that they ll be sharing a bed。 Er, no?! When he starts beating around the bush as an answer, like it's a bit complicated etc etc, what?, surely it's not complicated? A simple: no, we are COUSINS, BY BLOOD, would ve sufficed?! I didn't expect this book to be this good and I enjoyed it very much。 As I don't fancy too much romance, this gripping story with both romance and a lil bit of suspense made me love it and read till the end with full of excitement。 This also made me a fan of books with different cultures which I can experience through a book。 The author wrote the traditions of the little village in France so fascinating that it made me want to stay there。 Thank you for letting me see this beautiful foreign land。 I didn't expect this book to be this good and I enjoyed it very much。 As I don't fancy too much romance, this gripping story with both romance and a lil bit of suspense made me love it and read till the end with full of excitement。 This also made me a fan of books with different cultures which I can experience through a book。 The author wrote the traditions of the little village in France so fascinating that it made me want to stay there。 Thank you for letting me see this beautiful foreign land。。。 。。。more

Different from the movieThe movie is a love story。 The book seems to be a mystery with a bit of love story on the side。 Most of the same characters in both。 Both stories are very good。

Want to escape reality for a few hours? This is your best companion。 Light, fragrant and simply delicious。

。。。more
