Summary

The scorching new thriller from the number-one 'New York Times' best-selling author of 'The Girl on the Train'

When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him。 Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home。 Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member。 And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police。 Three women with separate connections to the victim。 Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment。 Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them。 When it comes to revenge, even good people might be capable of terrible deeds。 How far might any one of them go to find peace? How long can secrets smolder before they explode into flame?

Irene is the best!I loved this character so much。 She reminds me of a character in a collection of short stories by Helene Tursten, who I also adored。 Enjoy!

A pretty well-crafted whodunit。 "The Girl on the Train" was a much better book, but I didn't put this one down until it was finished。 A pretty well-crafted whodunit。 "The Girl on the Train" was a much better book, but I didn't put this one down until it was finished。 。。。more

4。5。 I love how Paula Hawkins dares to explore new things with each of her novels; this is nothing like Girl on the Train, nothing like her previous one, but its own thing, filled with meta references and complex characters and threads that are ultimately intertwined to form the bigger picture of the plot。 It’s not an explosive thriller filled with plot twists, but, just as the title promises, the slow burning unraveling of events。 Couldn’t put it down, highly recommend it if you’re into thrille 4。5。 I love how Paula Hawkins dares to explore new things with each of her novels; this is nothing like Girl on the Train, nothing like her previous one, but its own thing, filled with meta references and complex characters and threads that are ultimately intertwined to form the bigger picture of the plot。 It’s not an explosive thriller filled with plot twists, but, just as the title promises, the slow burning unraveling of events。 Couldn’t put it down, highly recommend it if you’re into thrillers with a little tweak to the formula。 。。。more

a quick read but the ending leaves A LOTTTT up for interpretation to the reader and not sure how I feel about it。 it was a slow burn, character heavy novel and i’m not sure that i felt attached to really any of the characters。 THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN remains my fave by her! thanks to Riverhead for the gifted copy 🖤

However, the twists and meanders of the journey there were too distracting for me。 One character writing a book even comments on the fact that no one tells a story in a straight forward way anymore。 Not sure if this was the author having a laugh and being ironic or, well I’m not sure。For me, I’m afraid the slow fire burning was just too slow and there was no burn just a smoldering before the fire went out。 。。。more

4。5 rounded up。 This has been a disappointing year for thrillers, so it's nice to see one finally deliver。 The first half of the book is a bit slow。 There are five POV characters and there is a lot of back story to get thru, in addition to the current events。 There are some time jumps between current day and past events, but it wasn't too confusing; it was pretty clear which events were "now" and what was "then。"For having 5 POV characters in a 300 page book, I think Hawkins did a great job of d 4。5 rounded up。 This has been a disappointing year for thrillers, so it's nice to see one finally deliver。 The first half of the book is a bit slow。 There are five POV characters and there is a lot of back story to get thru, in addition to the current events。 There are some time jumps between current day and past events, but it wasn't too confusing; it was pretty clear which events were "now" and what was "then。"For having 5 POV characters in a 300 page book, I think Hawkins did a great job of developing the main three。 The other two were less developed, but enough was done for them to serve their purpose。 There were also non-POV characters with their own story, so a lot got packed into a smallish novel。My biggest complaint was probably the novel inserts for The One Who Got Away。 They did what they were meant to do, but it just kind of throws off the consistency in the book and they felt out of place。 Anything revealed in the inserts could have been handled the same as other characters' back stories。Some of the twists you see coming and others you suspect, but the knowing didn't feel like it took away from the story。 Even when I was pretty sure I knew where it was going, there was a chance I might be wrong。 All of the twists felt earned and nothing felt like it came out of left field。I liked this one a lot。 It had some great characters and a good story。 I'd say this is easily the best new thriller I've read this year。 。。。more

Similar to other Paula Hawkins novels (The Girl on the Train and Into the Water), the characters are haunted and traumatized by past events and that trauma continues to impact their daily existence。 There is a murder mystery and throughout the book it seems like various characters have the motive and opportunity to be guilty。 It's a quick read。 Some of it is about how hurt people hurt people。 Some of it begs the question of whether some people are just evil。 I thought I knew for sure who did it Similar to other Paula Hawkins novels (The Girl on the Train and Into the Water), the characters are haunted and traumatized by past events and that trauma continues to impact their daily existence。 There is a murder mystery and throughout the book it seems like various characters have the motive and opportunity to be guilty。 It's a quick read。 Some of it is about how hurt people hurt people。 Some of it begs the question of whether some people are just evil。 I thought I knew for sure who did it a couple of times and was wrong。 The story includes loss, guilt, hurt, betrayal, revenge and friendship。 Throughout the novel are excerpts from another novel written by one of the characters。 It's at first a bit confusing, but is extremely important to the story and kind of a clever vehicle。 。。。more

Full of interesting characters, seething anger and soulless revenge, this is an excellent book。 There are none of the “unreliable narrators” common these days, but many of these people are either lying to themselves or withholding some part of the story when confronted。 But the plot is good and the dialogue sparkling。 I did find the ending a bit “tacked on” and don’t understand why the suspect Carter would engage with Myerson when the danger to him being caught would be increased (and indeed his Full of interesting characters, seething anger and soulless revenge, this is an excellent book。 There are none of the “unreliable narrators” common these days, but many of these people are either lying to themselves or withholding some part of the story when confronted。 But the plot is good and the dialogue sparkling。 I did find the ending a bit “tacked on” and don’t understand why the suspect Carter would engage with Myerson when the danger to him being caught would be increased (and indeed his future is not happy at the end)。 But that is a small quibble and actually provides some justifiable revenge。 The only thing I found completely unbelievable is the reuniting of Laura with her parents。 That is a concession to sentimentality that Hawkins has succumbed to for who knows what reason and is clearly unreliable! 。。。more

Enjoyed the story very much。 My guess was right about the killer。 It was very interesting and satisfying to see how the characters are not black and white good and evil characters。 Each of their stories, how those stories contribute to what happens in the story is good。 And in the end not giving a clear answer to if the person who died really did what he was accused of doing is a good choice for me。 Because in the end the murderer killed him not because the was fully sure about if he did it but Enjoyed the story very much。 My guess was right about the killer。 It was very interesting and satisfying to see how the characters are not black and white good and evil characters。 Each of their stories, how those stories contribute to what happens in the story is good。 And in the end not giving a clear answer to if the person who died really did what he was accused of doing is a good choice for me。 Because in the end the murderer killed him not because the was fully sure about if he did it but rather the murderer did not want to live with certain emotions she was feeling。 。。。more

Three cheers to Paula Hawkins for getting the title of her book absolutely on the spot。 Typical Hawkins tale that is certainly more briskly narrated than her first two tales。 It's a one line tale but it's not about the tale, it's how it's narrated and this is narration at its apex。 Three cheers to Paula Hawkins for getting the title of her book absolutely on the spot。 Typical Hawkins tale that is certainly more briskly narrated than her first two tales。 It's a one line tale but it's not about the tale, it's how it's narrated and this is narration at its apex。 。。。more

“He’d never struck a woman, never in his life, but he had thought about it with her, for a second, or two。 Then the moment passed and instead of hitting her he told her what he thought about her, and that was worse” 4。5! 4。5 stars。 So many reviews saying how good Girl On the Train was and how this doesn’t live up。 Her first book aside, this was excellent。 The characters were well set out, I didn’t expect the ending at all, there was an additional mystery running alongside the main mystery and it was very suspenseful。 People need to get over girl on the train。

Good story…but it was difficult to follow the plot…sudden change in POVs all long the story made it a bit difficult read…。

Een chaotisch boek, qua personages en verhaallijn

Just like the title suggests, this was a slow fire burning。 Unfortunately, it was a bit anticlimactic in the end。 Rosamund Pike however was a brilliant narrator (free audio copy received from Libro。fm)。

I enjoyed this but it wasn’t a favorite。The end still left me with questions。I did enjoy how the story lines up with the story the character wrote。 That was unique。This is a story about a murder that takes place on a houseboat。 There are so many “crazy” people it kept me wondering which one did it。 Is it the crazy neighbor on her houseboat? The jealous aunt? The author? Crazy Laura? Hmmmmm

I liked it - not sure why so many didn't seem to。 What I like about her characters are they flawed and hurting and unpredictable。 Hawkins does a great job fleshing them all out。 Add a murder and you got a lot of unpacking to do with this lot。 I liked it - not sure why so many didn't seem to。 What I like about her characters are they flawed and hurting and unpredictable。 Hawkins does a great job fleshing them all out。 Add a murder and you got a lot of unpacking to do with this lot。 。。。more

I did not really enjoy A Slow Fire Burning。 Like other novels by Paula Hawkins there were damaged, manipulative characters。 But I never cared for or was offended by any enough to feel invested in the story。 The reveals weren’t terribly surprising (I’d guessed the identity of the killer pretty early on)。
