Summary

The book that more than 12 million YouTube subscribers have been waiting for! Shane Dawson’s memoir features twenty original essays—uncensored yet surprisingly sweet。

From his first vlog back in 2008 to his full-length film directorial debut Not Cool, Shane Dawson has been an open book when it comes to documenting his life。 But behind the music video spoofs, TMI love life details, and outrageous commentary on everything the celebrity and Internet world has the nerve to dish out is a guy who grew up in a financially challenged but loving home in Long Beach, California, and who suffered all the teasing and social limitations that arise when you’re a morbidly obese kid with a pretty face, your mom is your best friend, and you can't get a date to save your life。

In I Hate Myselfie, Shane steps away from his larger-than-life Internet persona and takes us deep into the experiences of an eccentric and introverted kid, who by observing the strange world around him developed a talent that would inspire millions of fans。 Intelligent, hilarious, heartbreaking, and raw, I Hate Myselfie is a collection of eighteen personal essays about how messy life can get when you’re growing up and how rewarding it can feel when the clean-up is (pretty much) done。

his comedy is very disturbing but if you look past all the problematic shit you might have something to laugh about here and there。

Props to Shane for managing to go 69 whole pages without mentioning ch*ld p*rn。 I imagine it was difficult for him。

Yea 。。 No。 Rape jokes are never funny and most of this was pointless, artificial stories。 For example:"I wasn't the prettiest girl at the prom but I was definitely good enough to get date raped。" Or "I'm still shocked and slightly offended that I was never molested。" Yea 。。 No。 Rape jokes are never funny and most of this was pointless, artificial stories。 For example:"I wasn't the prettiest girl at the prom but I was definitely good enough to get date raped。" Or "I'm still shocked and slightly offended that I was never molested。" 。。。more

So I decided to read Shane's first book, which was a horrible idea。 It seems like every 5 seconds Shane has to pause the story to add in some weird raunchy joke。 Shane writes a story about his grandma passing away but every other paragraph he jokes about having diarrhea。 However later on, there is a story where Shane almost dies from dehydration and there are almost NO jokes in the story。 I'm not even going to get into the parts where he sexualizes his mom and minors。 I don't think this book sho So I decided to read Shane's first book, which was a horrible idea。 It seems like every 5 seconds Shane has to pause the story to add in some weird raunchy joke。 Shane writes a story about his grandma passing away but every other paragraph he jokes about having diarrhea。 However later on, there is a story where Shane almost dies from dehydration and there are almost NO jokes in the story。 I'm not even going to get into the parts where he sexualizes his mom and minors。 I don't think this book shows him in a good light at all。 He comes across as very rude and judgemental。 Some of the essays in this book are not that bad, it's just the fact that Shane chooses to make jokes about things that are not okay。 。。。more

This is straight up garbage。 Boring cliches and worn out potty humor。 I can understand how teens would find this stuff funny, but the fact that SD wrote this when he was way past his teen years is what’s so disturbing。 He’s a 30 year old man, and should reflect on his life with an age appropriate mindsite。 Instead of teaching anything with humor he just spews a bunch of inane jokes that poke fun at everything from fat people to date rape。 You can pull humor from any topic, but he just fails mise This is straight up garbage。 Boring cliches and worn out potty humor。 I can understand how teens would find this stuff funny, but the fact that SD wrote this when he was way past his teen years is what’s so disturbing。 He’s a 30 year old man, and should reflect on his life with an age appropriate mindsite。 Instead of teaching anything with humor he just spews a bunch of inane jokes that poke fun at everything from fat people to date rape。 You can pull humor from any topic, but he just fails miserably at it。 。。。more

It was funny and easy to follow。 I like shane dawsons' YouTube channel so I thought I'd read his book too。 Very interesting and funny stories, the explicit language and tone of speech is signature shane dawson, but if you've listened to his videos you'd know that's his style。 Some statements, tho intended as humorous, came across as frightening at times。 It was funny and easy to follow。 I like shane dawsons' YouTube channel so I thought I'd read his book too。 Very interesting and funny stories, the explicit language and tone of speech is signature shane dawson, but if you've listened to his videos you'd know that's his style。 Some statements, tho intended as humorous, came across as frightening at times。 。。。more

I'm definitely giving this book a 5 out of 5 for how revealing and vulnerable Shane was in this book。 He really layed it all out there no matter how embarrassing and I'm sad to find his second book isn't available on audible which is a shame because I would have been interested to listen to that as well。 I'm definitely giving this book a 5 out of 5 for how revealing and vulnerable Shane was in this book。 He really layed it all out there no matter how embarrassing and I'm sad to find his second book isn't available on audible which is a shame because I would have been interested to listen to that as well。 。。。more

PERSONAL RESPONSE: I personally really like this book I Hate Myselfie by Shane Dawson。 It talks about a lot of real events and it is not about a superhero or something like that。 It is good it has real details in it and it is about the real events in his life like how he gets a haircut and how he is in a play right off the bat。 I like that type of book。PLOTIt is about a 26-year-old telling us about his life and what he has done so far it starts with him being 18。 It ends with him being 26。 It i PERSONAL RESPONSE: I personally really like this book I Hate Myselfie by Shane Dawson。 It talks about a lot of real events and it is not about a superhero or something like that。 It is good it has real details in it and it is about the real events in his life like how he gets a haircut and how he is in a play right off the bat。 I like that type of book。PLOTIt is about a 26-year-old telling us about his life and what he has done so far it starts with him being 18。 It ends with him being 26。 It is just 18 stories about his life。 It includes little events that he remembers。CHARACTERIZATION:There is only one main character in the book but there are many other people。 Those people are not main characters or people worth remembering。 The main character, Shane Dawson, is a dynamic character。 He gets way more mature throughout the book。 It kinda shows how he grows up but there is another minor character at the beginning, Tara, who was one of Shanes best friends in high school。 She gets him into the play and helps him to be more outgoing。SETTING:The setting is in many locations around Long Beach, California because it is a whole bunch of stories in one。 I am going to pick one story which was about him being in a play and this story, he talks about one of his childhood best friends。 The setting of this story is his high school。 The time period is throughout the 2000s。 It impacts the story because this is the time period that Shane matures。RECOMMENDATION: I recommend this for boys and girls 15 and older because there are a lot of dirty jokes and stuff like that so readers need to be mature。 。。。more

tl;dr, I was a fan of Shane's and watched his videos all the way back in 2009。 I read this book back when it first came out。 Needless to say, I'm no longer a fan。 I decided to reread this because I had forgotten most of what's written in it。 Let's just say this definitely did NOT age well。 Big yikes。I kinda had a different perspective reading this book, being an ex-fan and all。 I'm actually not THAT shocked by Shane's language。 (Also, in the age of ghost-written youtuber books, he actually deser tl;dr, I was a fan of Shane's and watched his videos all the way back in 2009。 I read this book back when it first came out。 Needless to say, I'm no longer a fan。 I decided to reread this because I had forgotten most of what's written in it。 Let's just say this definitely did NOT age well。 Big yikes。I kinda had a different perspective reading this book, being an ex-fan and all。 I'm actually not THAT shocked by Shane's language。 (Also, in the age of ghost-written youtuber books, he actually deserves credit for at least actually writing his own book, this was definitely him)。 Other than the obviously offensive jokes (pedophilia, racism, animal abuse, sexual harassment, ableism, fat shaming, slut shaming。。。etc), which obviously crossed the line, he honestly spends most of the book making fun of himself。 What made this book hard to get through, for me personally, wasn't the blatantly "wrong" stuff that every drama channel has already reported on, but the constant self-deprecation and dramatization。 It is very clear to me that Shane has not dealt with (and consequently gotten over) his past traumas like he claims in this book and his youtube channel。 Shane merely uses crude humor as a shield against everything bad that can happen to him (which includes being held accountable for his own actions, as it seems)。 I actually felt really sad while reading this book, because it seems like Shane literally cannot have an authentic moment。 Every story in his life has to be exaggerated and hyperbolized and he himself can't go one sentence without calling himself fat and disgusting。 After a while, it just gets really tiring, because I know 99% of the things didn't happen the way Shane made it sound and I can't tell if he wanted me to see his life as joke or to take him seriously。 Fast forward to my perspective now in 2021, he hasn't changed much from who he was when he wrote this book。 He got richer and his life got better, but he did not work on his own issues like he claimed he has。 He is still living his past traumas, but instead of hurting himself with it, he started hurting others with it (what makes it worse is that he became friends with one of the meanest bully on youtube)。 Ultimately, I just hope he gets the help he needs。 I'm in no way saying that he doesn't deserve to be called out for his actions, he does。 But what this book made it very clear to me is why so many people were okay with it for so long。 Shane was, and still is, struggling with body image, self-image, self-esteem and his sexuality and people related to that。 Unfortunately, his audience grew up, while he did not。 。。。more

So I'm giving this book two stars。 I'm being generous。 I really only read it because he has a similar name to me and he's been on YouTube for years, so I wanted to feed my curiosity。 After reading it, I'm shocked there even is a four-star average review。 I gave two stars because this book has a few kind of coherent stories that have some semblance of coherent lessons for the readers, but otherwise, it's not a very good book because rarely does he ever expand on them or try to inspire some sort o So I'm giving this book two stars。 I'm being generous。 I really only read it because he has a similar name to me and he's been on YouTube for years, so I wanted to feed my curiosity。 After reading it, I'm shocked there even is a four-star average review。 I gave two stars because this book has a few kind of coherent stories that have some semblance of coherent lessons for the readers, but otherwise, it's not a very good book because rarely does he ever expand on them or try to inspire some sort of positive lesson to his young and impressionable audience。 He makes everything about himself and seems to lack empathy for others just based on the way he judges others situations。 If you want to learn about his life before 2015 and his mindset from then, then I guess give it a read if you se it in your library, (would not recommend spending good money on it)。 However, if you want an entertaining read with fascinating, inspiring stories and/or brilliant writing; I suggest you look for something else because he is a god-awful writer。 I'm not even sure how this book got published because he doesn't even have basic writing skills。 I get he's a YouTuber and not a writer but come on。 At least learn how to write dialogue instead of this:"Shane: blah blah blahother person: blah blah blah。"And let's move on to an important warning。 When this book says it's his true, uncensored thoughts, he REALLY lived up to that。 He didn't censor SEVERAL gross and taboo things that I'm surprised is even allowed to be published。 If you have children or young family members who watch Shane Dawson's YouTube channel who ask you for this book, I would NOT recommend that you buy for them as it contains several instances of extreme 18+ humor, which I'm not necessarily against, it's just not my style nor appropriate for minors。 There are several disgusting jokes that take it way too far, such as racist stereotypes, homophobic remarks where he constantly fears that people will think he is gay (which is ironic on many levels), and most disgustingly, rape joke and sexual jokes revolving minors and/or animals。 I had to skip over several paragraphs because these "jokes" are just vomit-inducing and didn't make me laugh in the slightest。 Maybe he's just trying to be edgy, but it makes me feel extremely concerned for him that he seems to not understand boundaries。 This book could have been a LOT better and easier to get through had he left those out。 I never had more of a hard time getting through a book and that's saying something。 。。。more

I just want to let y’all know this is an old review so yes, its kinda cringe and long and will probably be edited sometime soon idk1。 Is it real or not pls tell meFirstly, there's the fake stories that Shane uses to make a point? The dialogue in every chapter is choppy and weird, & people literally speak like they're doing a sermon。 You want someone to say a sentence and they end up spouting a paragraph。 It puts people off。 And, speak TW: SA JOKES, PEDOPHILIA, GENERAL SHANE DAWSON HUMOUR 😰😰Okay! The dialogue in every chapter is choppy and weird, & people literally speak like they're doing a sermon。 You want someone to say a sentence and they end up spouting a paragraph。 It puts people off。 And, speaking of them being fake, am I meant to believe that when Shane was at a doctor's appointment, his doctor suddenly told him to pretend to be Shananay? Like I’m assuming they’re not bc this is a youtuber book BUT some of these are actually rlly weird which makes you ask why he’d write it (I’m looking at you, dog sentence)2。 Shane and ~racism~So Shane defends his racism by saying that he grew up in California。 It all makes sense now, guys!!Close your eyes and imagine him being in tenth grade and acting out a sketch where a white person is trying to fit in with their black friends。 The sketch is full of stereotypes and Shane knows that "white people just wouldn't get it" even though he’s white。。? But everyone laughs at his funny sketch though and they all give him a standing ovation! Fifteen year olds love him omgHis teacher confronts him about the sketch and then Shane's friend (who you have to remember is black, Shane wants us to remember) comes to defend him。 Then we get one of those really long, sermon-y paragraphs and Shane says that it changed his view of comedy forever。 Did it though? Because it just feels like you made it up 😭3。 Hmm, that was kinda weirdNext, there's Shane's obsession with SHOCK HUMOUR bc bad things = funny 🤪 Some highlights include:- calling his friend at prom a child prostitute but happy about it- saying that his new hair cut made him hot enough to get date r*ped- talking about how his "slut" friend gave a teacher the clap- talks about how the class assistant is purely there because he wants to bang all the male studentsWasn't that weird and unnecessary? I thought it was :(4。 ConclusionI read this because I thought, at the least, it would be so bad it’s funny。 But all the bad bits were just gross (no one likes fart jokes anymore) and all the not bad bits were boring。 By boring, I mean he went off on like five different tangents every time the chapter progressed。Anyways, that's my review, this is your reminder to not read this book。 Drink some water instead or idk stan Stray Kids they have a new album out 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Terrible read with nothing specifically funny about it - especially the constant allusions to inappropriate and downright heinous **trigger warning** child sex jokes。 Would have given it 0 stars, if I could。 For a biography that is a reflection of a difficult upbringing, it could have spun many different directions, but the author choices leave much to be desired。 0/5 stars。

I read this at a few years ago in the era when books written by YouTubers were still being published regularly and were pretty popular。 I read a handful of books written by YouTubers during this time and, for some, getting a perspective into their lives that is different from what they show us on the screen was nice。 Some of them take themselves to seriously as authors and it shows, but nothing that I can fault them for。 This book, however; is just awful。As a regular consumer of YouTube content, I read this at a few years ago in the era when books written by YouTubers were still being published regularly and were pretty popular。 I read a handful of books written by YouTubers during this time and, for some, getting a perspective into their lives that is different from what they show us on the screen was nice。 Some of them take themselves to seriously as authors and it shows, but nothing that I can fault them for。 This book, however; is just awful。As a regular consumer of YouTube content, I've known of Shane Dawson for a long time; however I've never been a fan as his many iterations of content have never been my, um, cup-of-tea? Even his newer "documentary" style, while maybe more mature, spreads misinformation and gives other problematic people a platform that they don't necessarily deserve。 I never disliked Shane Dawson until last year when his past and present unethical behavior started making headlines。 Now? Well。。。 I don't feel like going into THAT rant, but I would be perfectly okay if he never returned to the internet。This book is bad。 And I don't just think that because of the way I feel about it's author。 The content is just。。。 hateful, inappropriate, and wrong。 This book is written by someone whose audience has always been comprised of children and teenagers (especially at the time it was published)。 I wouldn't find the content of this book appropriate for children, teens, adults, the elderly, or even the dead。This book is supposed to be a "real" and "inside" look at Shane beyond his internet personality, but if this book is a reflection of how he truly is then I'm a bit baffled at how this unlikeable, unfunny person has gained a fanbase of millions。 There are a lot of real, awful, and serious topics in this book that he tries to pass off as "jokes" but none of it is funny。Rape is not a joke。Misogyny is not a joke。Fat-shaming is not a joke。Slut-shaming is not a joke。Non of this is "shock-and-awe" humor and saying "it was a different time" is not an excuse (2015 was only 6 years ago), it is hurtful, disparaging content that is being poorly passed off as some lazy stab at humor。 But really is any of this surprising from someone who did black face and used racial slurs on the regular in the name of comedy? No。 I just wish I had known then and not wasted my time reading it or my money supporting someone who I now refuse to support。I find it ironic that his second book (christ。。。 I can't even believe someone gave him a second book deal) is called "It Gets Worse" when ummm。。。 I don't think it does and I'm certainly not going to find out。 。。。more
