Ever since she got pregnant, seventeen-year-old Emoni's life has been about making the tough decisions - doing what has to be done for her young daughter and her grandmother。 Keeping her head down at school, trying not to get caught up with new boy Malachi。 The one place she can let everything go is in the kitchen, where she has magical hands - whipping up extraordinary food beloved by everyone。

Emoni wants to be a chef more than anything, but she knows it's pointless to pursue the impossible。 There are rules she has to play by。 And yet, once she starts cooking, and gets that fire on high, she sees that her drive to feed will feed her soul and dreams too。 And anything is possible。

okaaaay i loved this book so much。 best book i've read in a while。 i could see the movie playing in my mind, and it rlly felt like every one of her emotions were my emotions too。 i could feel the stress, or the romance or the heartbreak and all。 it was also inspiring lol。 makes me wanna just go after my dreams and work the hardest i possibly can to make it happen。 it was feel good, happy and bittersweet in all the best ways。 you gotta read this! okaaaay i loved this book so much。 best book i've read in a while。 i could see the movie playing in my mind, and it rlly felt like every one of her emotions were my emotions too。 i could feel the stress, or the romance or the heartbreak and all。 it was also inspiring lol。 makes me wanna just go after my dreams and work the hardest i possibly can to make it happen。 it was feel good, happy and bittersweet in all the best ways。 you gotta read this! 。。。more

3。5 stars。 My biggest complaint about this book is that the chapters were SO SHORT。 I felt like it was jumping from scene to scene, and I could never settle in and just enjoy the story。 It did keep me turning the pages though。 Overall well-written, likeable characters, great food descriptions。 Definitely spicier than other YA contemporaries I’ve read。 Not a fan of that; I think it lingered on it too much sometimes。Overall an enjoyable read, but I probably wouldn’t read it again or recommend it。

Ania Książki pachnące cynamonem

Nic wybitnego, była w porządku。 Strasznie mi się dłużyła, a to dlatego, że jej fabuła była strasznie oklepana。

With the Fire on High is a really sweet story about a teen mother who pursues her dream of being a professional chef。 It reminded me a lot of Acevedo's The Poet X--it seems like perhaps she has developed a formula for crafting stories--but I still found it sweet and engaging。 With the Fire on High is a really sweet story about a teen mother who pursues her dream of being a professional chef。 It reminded me a lot of Acevedo's The Poet X--it seems like perhaps she has developed a formula for crafting stories--but I still found it sweet and engaging。 。。。more

Surprisingly enough, I actually really enjoyed this read。 Contemporaries aren't usually my thing, but Acevedo's writing style was really easy to digest and I actually remained engaged with the story throughout。 I appreciated the discussion around what it's like to be a teen mother and the implications it has on your life and decisions, and also the way that food and cooking was so heavily involved in the story。 This was definitely a read that made me hungry, but on the whole I just felt so much Surprisingly enough, I actually really enjoyed this read。 Contemporaries aren't usually my thing, but Acevedo's writing style was really easy to digest and I actually remained engaged with the story throughout。 I appreciated the discussion around what it's like to be a teen mother and the implications it has on your life and decisions, and also the way that food and cooking was so heavily involved in the story。 This was definitely a read that made me hungry, but on the whole I just felt so much for Emoni and I liked the quiet nature of the story which delved into her life and her decisions and what she wanted from her future, the difficulties she faced and her love for her daughter and cooking。 It was definitely an interesting, character-focused read, and the first novel written in prose by this author。 I had previously enjoyed her novels written in verse, and I feel as though her writing was equally suited to prose。 The audiobook was also definitely a good route to take as it was immersive and had a nice flow, being narrated by the author herself。 Overall, definitely glad I finally picked this one up。 。。。more

This was a fast read! It had lovable characters and shared the experience of teenage motherhood。 I buzzed through this really fast because I loved the way it flowed。

Real rating: 4。75/5 starsFormat: Hardback I genuinely feel like I left a piece of my heart with this book。 When I was on the last page I felt like crying because I’ve never read a book like it before。 This was so beautiful and I can’t wait to read more from this author。 I see why this book is well-loved。

God I really love Elizabeth Acevedo's writing。 I can't even express to you how much I loved this book。 I was worried I wouldn't love it was much as I loved Clap As You Land, but boy was I wrong。 I loved it just as much。 I loved the way Emoni and her family care and support each other。 The relationships within this book are so we'll developed and heartwarming。 God I really love Elizabeth Acevedo's writing。 I can't even express to you how much I loved this book。 I was worried I wouldn't love it was much as I loved Clap As You Land, but boy was I wrong。 I loved it just as much。 I loved the way Emoni and her family care and support each other。 The relationships within this book are so we'll developed and heartwarming。 。。。more

I always enjoy books written by Elizabeth Acevedo, but this one was a different experience since the other ones I read were in verse。 It was a also a perspective that isn't featured a lot in young adult literature and with Acevedo's way of writing characters, she really brought the main character's (Emoni) voice to life。 I would have liked more recipes throughout the book, but that's because I'm used to reading a couple of series that does that。 The pacing of this novel was quick due to the shor I always enjoy books written by Elizabeth Acevedo, but this one was a different experience since the other ones I read were in verse。 It was a also a perspective that isn't featured a lot in young adult literature and with Acevedo's way of writing characters, she really brought the main character's (Emoni) voice to life。 I would have liked more recipes throughout the book, but that's because I'm used to reading a couple of series that does that。 The pacing of this novel was quick due to the short chapters and the author also didn't drag scenes on: she kept the plot moving。 。。。more

My mother thanks this book for making me eat more (so do I)。But the sentence, "I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding。" made its appearance THRICE in the book。 So yes, I definitely can't give it five stars。 I still enjoyed the over all experience of reading though。 My mother thanks this book for making me eat more (so do I)。But the sentence, "I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding。" made its appearance THRICE in the book。 So yes, I definitely can't give it five stars。 I still enjoyed the over all experience of reading though。 。。。more

This book reminded me of how much I enjoy cooking and the connection it allows me to have with others。 I loved the short chapters! Made it so easy to pick up and put down as needed。 I gave this book 4 stars only bc I felt like it needed just a little more。。 a little more magic, feelings。。 something。 Still a good read

"With the Fire on High" by Elizabeth Acevedo was an amazing book。 The book was about a single teen mother, Emoni。 It is a story about her trying to juggle her passion for cooking and being a parent during her senior year。 Being only her and her grandmother, Emoni has to balance school and work to keep her family afloat。 Her life is flipped upside down with they offer a new culinary class at her school。 When she finally decides to take the class, challenges arise that she didn't see coming along "With the Fire on High" by Elizabeth Acevedo was an amazing book。 The book was about a single teen mother, Emoni。 It is a story about her trying to juggle her passion for cooking and being a parent during her senior year。 Being only her and her grandmother, Emoni has to balance school and work to keep her family afloat。 Her life is flipped upside down with they offer a new culinary class at her school。 When she finally decides to take the class, challenges arise that she didn't see coming along with new people coming into her life that she has to deal with。 Struggling to put herself first and follow her passion, Emoni's story is of a teen trying to figure it out。 This book is filled with character development, love, and characters having to believe in themselves through thick and thin。 "With the Fire on High" is one of the best books I have ever read, and I would honestly read it again。 The relationships displayed in this book are heartwarming and powerful。 "With the Fire on High" by Elizabeth Acevedo proves that love exists in more forms than one。 。。。more

This。 THIS! is exactly why Acevedo is an auto-buy author for me。 Witty, sharp, rich characters pop from the page; she is a master at tapping into young emotions, dreams, and hopes, without making them sound annoying (which happens too often with books about teenagers)。 This book was absolutely delicious!

Andrea

The overall story was nice。 The writing was simple, used a lot of the same phrases throughout, and all the conflicts were resolved a little too easily and quickly, but it told a lovely story still。

I just loved this。 Elizabeth Acevedo has a wonderful voice that truly makes you feel as though you are right there with the characters, and that the characters are real, living, breathing creatures。 I especially enjoyed the recipes and the descriptions of the Puerto Rican food。

is in a relationship with Laura。tAt her high school, they are offering a new culinary arts class for an elective。 Emoni wants to take it as she is in love with cooking and is very good at it, but she doesn't know if she can because it would take up her study hall, and she doesn't have very much time to do school work between working her job and taking care of Emma。There will also be a trip to Spain involved with this class, and she doesn’t know if she can afford it。 tThere is a new boy in her advisory class named Malachai, and she thinks he seems sorta like a nerd after he starts speaking。 The teacher of her advisory class is named Ms。 Fuentes, and she strongly encourages her to take the class。 tWhenever Tyrone takes her on the weekends, she is not entirely comfortable with it since she likes being around her daughter。 Tyrone’s mother seems strict。 tJulio, Emoni’s father, handed Emoni to her abuela one day to ask her to watch her for a while and never came back。 Emoni’s mother died, and the only person she talks to from her side of the family is her mother’s oldest sister, Sarah。 tOn the first day of the culinary class the chef is strict and seems to like lecturing, and the first lesson ends up how to handle a knife。 Malachi is in the class, but he comes in late。 Her and Malachi talk after the class and next time he walks her to class, but Emoni is insistent that they are not friends。 The first recipe they are assigned is chocolate pudding, and Emoni adds smoked paprika on top of it, even though it wasn’t in the recipe。 The chef tastes it, and likes it very much, but tells Emoni that she should not add things in the future as some chefs may take offense to it。tMalachai asks Emoni on a date in front of Leslie, after he finds out she has a kid。 They go to get this flavored ice thing and Angelica quizzes him on what he wants with Emoni the whole time。 Emoni goes home and Abuela nags her for being late because Abeula had a doctor appointment for her hand which was injured at work years ago, but Emoni suspects it’s getting worse。 tMs。 Fuentes encourages Emoni to go to college, saying that it would be better in the long run, but Emoni is not sure between tuition price, taking care of Emma, and work she isn’t sure she has the ability to。 tIn culinary arts, the trip would be 800 dollars for her to get in 2 ½ months and she won’t be able to get that。 The chef makes her throw away a dish without tasting it because she added extra stuff again, and he wants her to stick to the recipe he was giving。 Emoni is angry at this and goes home early, and does not attend the classes for the rest of the week。 tHer father Julio, lives in the Puerto rican islands, where there are earthquakes often, and there's another one coming that is meant to be bad。 Julio visits once a year, and last time he visited without saying goodbye。 Abuela tries to get Julio to evacuate, but he refuses。 tMalachi took another girl on a date, at the place where Emoni works, and they didn't talk for about a week since she wasn’t going to class。 After a while, Malachi calls Emoni and asks if he could see her, and they decide that he could help her cook dinner for Laura and Angelica’s anniversary。 They go back to Emoni’s house after and they watch a movie。 Tyrone doesn’t like the idea of Emoni being with someone else around his daughter, and calls her and asks about Malachai after one of his friends saw them hanging out。 Abuela, Emoni, and Emma go out to eat, and Emoni talks with the chef who made their food, and finds out she is friends with Chef Ayden, her culinary instructor。 After this, Emoni decides to go back to classes after this, and Chef tells her that if she wants to make up for the work she missed, she could be in charge of the fundraisers for the trip to Spain。 Tyrone and Emoni talk and they make up from the argument when he comes to pick up Emma。 Emoni works in a group in culinary class now, after the chef told her to。 She asks for suggestions from friends for what to do for the fundraiser, and they come up with many ideas。 Angelica gets a lot of fabric and they make a chef costume movie for Emma for halloween。One of the ideas they came up with for the fundraiser was to make nice lunches for the teacher, and it’s been approved by the principal。 To raise even more money they decided to make food for the winter dinner, an annual dinner they have, but the food is not very good usually at this dinner。They end up making 2000 dollars at the winter dinner, which means that everyone would have to pay 275 dollars, but Emoni still doesn’t have enough money for this。 They were to cancel the lunches entirely after they made enough money, but the teachers started to like them, so they decided to start them up in the spring again with extra credit for whoever made the meals, and they could keep their tips they got while serving。Emoji goes to Chef Ayden and tells him that she doesn’t have enough money for the trip, and he says he will try and figure it out, though it’s kinda late。 Her Aunt Sarah found out she was going on a trip, and scrambled together 300 dollars with her family for her, covering her prices。 Malachai,Emoni,Laura,Angelica, Abuela, and Emaa all go to the disney on ice show, because Malachai aunt works there and had tickets to give。 Once at their home, Malachai and Emoni talk about their relationship, and Emoni is not sure if she wants more than what they have, eventually Malachai goes home。 Emoni got caught with her phone at school and the security guard took it away until the next day。 Once she gets home after getting groceries, Abuela is not there and neither is Emma。 Tyrone’s mother eventually calls and says that Emma had a fever at school and that they were trying to call Abuela and Emoni all day。 Mrs。 Palmer, Tyrone’s mother, says that they called her after a while and that she could bring her home。 Mrs。 Palmer implies that she thinks Emoni is irresponsible, and that Tyrone might want custody of Emma。 When Abuela gets home, it’s found out that the doctors appointments she has been going to have not been doctor appointments, and just Abuela walking around and doing things to clear her mind。Emoni asks her boss months in advance if she can take a week off to go to Spain, and he basically fires her。 Emma stays with her father, and Abuela goes out for her time。 There is a pass of time in January and February。 Emoni is finally going to Spain。 The students are each staying with partners in different families, and Emoni is Leslie’s, who she hates。 The next day, each student is assigned a chef to work with that Chef Ayden thought they would work best with, and Emoni is assigned a chef who works with modern cuisine, with a twist。 This chef owns a restaurant, and has Emoni prepare that night's special for it, and it’s very good。 The next day, she had Emoni smelling spices, and Emoni gets bored so she tells Leslie about this later, and Emoni considers she may have judged Leslie too harshly。 Chef Ayden asks Emoni if she likes the chef she is working with, and Emoni likes her a lot。 He gives the class free time to walk around, and Malachai and Emoni go to the cathedral where Emoni talks about how it’s is stupid that so many people honor Christopher Columbus, when he wasn’t a good person, and killed a lot of people to steal their land。 They go to a bar to eat after this, and they see classmates drinking, since it’s legal for them to do so in Spain。 Most of them were celebrating being accepted into their colleges, but Leslie was drinking because she wasn’t and said rude things before throwing up。Malachai and Emoni then dragged her home。Malachai and Emoni watch movies for a while, and they kiss。The last day in Spain, the Chef she has been working with gives Emoni some spices to take back home。 Emoni offers Leslie a ride home once they drop off from the airport。 Once she gets home she talks with Abuela, and they look at her college forms, to see where she was accepted。 Of the schools she applied to, she was accepted into Drexel。Abuela is very proud of Emoni, and tells her the reason she has been going out on “ doctors appointments” is to see Mr。 Jagoda, a guy who worked at the doctor’s and has asked her to marry him。 Abuela did not want to accept because she thought she needed to take care of Emma。 Emoni tells her that Emma is her kid and that she can take care of her now, so she could marry him if she wanted to。Julio comes to visit a month earlier than usual, and tells Emoni that he had not stayed because everything reminded him of her mother。 Juliio decided to stay for a while longer this time though, and to see her graduate。 Emoni goes and asks the chef who gave her a card at the WInter dinner if she could have a job, and she is accepted。 She also decides to go to Drexel。 。。。more

A decent story of a teen mother who works incredibly hard to do the right thing all the time and figure out what she really wants in life。 I think this is too quiet a book to interest most teens。 It is well-written and clearly shows the struggles of one young girl with poverty and a difficult family situation。

I loved the pace and ending, Its a great end that could lead into a sequel or a stand alone。 Its amazing。
