Summary

Do you work magic with herbs? Do you use them in spells, for talismans or simply use their innate powers? If you don't have Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, you need to get it right away。 This book has become a classic in its field。 Paul Beyerl, a respected author on herbs calls it "…an essential reference book by students of herbalism and magick alike … Scott's personable charm touches every page… I highly recommend this book。" And Jeanne Rose, famous author of books on herbs and developer of an herbal course says "I love books like this … It is accessible, easy to read, and with its encompassing index (all too often neglected), simple to use as well。" Over 200,000 people already have this book and use it frequently。

In this edition of the book (it's expanded and revised on the 15th anniversary of original publication) you will find the magical properties and folklore of over 400 herbs! You'll also find lists of herbs based on their magical powers, their genders, their planetary rulers, and more。 Perhaps the most important list is the folk name cross-reference。 With that information, when a recipe calls for "bramble, " you'll know it needs blackberry。 Or if the magic calls for "enebro," you'll know you that is juniper。

The main part of this book is the listings of the herbs。 Each one includes names, associations, and magical attributions。 Violets can be used for protection, luck, love, and more。 Primrose is for protection and love。 Garlic is for protection, healing, exorcism, lust, and prevention of theft。

This book is considered a classic。 It is probably consulted more than any other book on this subject。 If you want to learn the secrets of magical herbs, this book is a must!

How is one meant to rate such a book? Obviously none of this registers as true and was paged through as a reference。 So who would like this? People into this stuff surely already know what's in here。 I don't know 。 。 。 How is one meant to rate such a book? This book is now officially my go to book for herbs/plants and their many uses in witchcraft。 I think there are a few plants missing from time to time that I wish it had but it has the most important ones for beginners。 I especially love the explanation of how catnip can help you have a special connection with your cat, how splitting an apple with someone can bond you, how things like rosemary are great for baths, and so much more tips that I’ll now try to do from time to time。

As much as Scott Cunningham’s work and influence needs and deserves recognition for his contributions to Wicca in the last 25 years, I really don’t like this book and I wish it wasn’t recommended so often for beginners。While the elemental and planetary correspondences of the plants are useful, overall I find the thoroughness of the information offered in regard to the magical uses of the plants woefully lacking。 The ‘Powers’ of each plant sometimes leave out properties mentioned in the ‘Magical As much as Scott Cunningham’s work and influence needs and deserves recognition for his contributions to Wicca in the last 25 years, I really don’t like this book and I wish it wasn’t recommended so often for beginners。While the elemental and planetary correspondences of the plants are useful, overall I find the thoroughness of the information offered in regard to the magical uses of the plants woefully lacking。 The ‘Powers’ of each plant sometimes leave out properties mentioned in the ‘Magical Uses’ descriptions and it’s overall a frustrating book to read because of it’s hodge-lodge approach。The sloppy organization of the information offered in this book is odd because the annotated bibliography at the back of the book is extensive。 Obviously the author did a lot of research。 I would have expected the book to be much more detailed and thorough because of the author’s research (even M。A。 Grieve’s ‘A Modern Herbal’ - which is cited as a reference in the bibliography - has better information than what the author provides in this book)。 And with literal scads of information throughout human history on the ways in which plants were used in folk and ritual practices (hello - even the Bible has info on this stuff and even recipes for oils and incenses if you read it carefully!), I really would have expected more from this book given it’s underserved popularity。And I’m entirely confused about why gender is associated with any of the plants mentioned since the application of the concept of gender to plants is problematic to say the least。I’ve often wished for a better overall reference than this book and have even resorted to complying my own spreadsheet out of sheer frustration。 This book shouldn’t be relied upon as a sole reference for any beginning practitioner and I’d really only use it as a cross-reference myself。 。。。more

Enjoyed the research of 'ritual use' of magical herbs , in which Cunningham provides svelte folk history of the herbs, would have loved more, albeit Cunningham provides an extensive list of herbs (Europeans can also use the book based upon the North American landscape) Enjoyed the research of 'ritual use' of magical herbs , in which Cunningham provides svelte folk history of the herbs, would have loved more, albeit Cunningham provides an extensive list of herbs (Europeans can also use the book based upon the North American landscape) 。。。more

Fantastic read from start to finish!I think this is one of the most comprehensive, reliable beginner guides that you can find out there on most commonly seen herbs/ingredients, fruit/veggies and trees。Surely, it does not contain everything as it absolutely cannot or should not。 This encyclopedia invites the curious readers to further their research after going through this very well made foundation f magical herbs。It provides more than enough basic information on plants including names and even Fantastic read from start to finish!I think this is one of the most comprehensive, reliable beginner guides that you can find out there on most commonly seen herbs/ingredients, fruit/veggies and trees。Surely, it does not contain everything as it absolutely cannot or should not。 This encyclopedia invites the curious readers to further their research after going through this very well made foundation f magical herbs。It provides more than enough basic information on plants including names and even offers us an introduction where he explains how planets and elements and sexes rule over plants。 I think it is a wonderful and extensive resource for people who are just getting started and opens the path to a lot more than just what is generally known about herbs。I also loved that deities are mentioned for some of the herbs, also some snippets of history or cultural notes。 I did laugh sometimes at specific traditions or rituals performed in the past。 I also appreciated that poisonous plants were mentioned with a warning。The only major downside was pictures。 There are only a couple of drawings and honestly I could barely make out anything from them。Overall, even though it is lacking in medicinal notes, this is the best book for anyone looking to get better acquainted with the basics of the magic of herbs。 。。。more

Whilst highly Wicca-centric, with some outdated ideas, this book is a must have for any practising witch, herbalist, spiritualist, or for anyone that's interested in the mythology and magic of flora。 Whilst highly Wicca-centric, with some outdated ideas, this book is a must have for any practising witch, herbalist, spiritualist, or for anyone that's interested in the mythology and magic of flora。 。。。more

I personally like this encyclopedia a lot。 It was a great beginner artifact。 While a lot of people would consider 99% of the content (regarding spiritual meanings, manifestation, and witchcraft) fake, I would say it included a lot of reasoning and evidence as to how herbs can help in daily life。 One of my favorite segments in the book was regarding rice and saffron。 Why? Because it gave the historical beliefs。 For Saffron women would carry sachets to ensure a speedy recovery。 And many religious I personally like this encyclopedia a lot。 It was a great beginner artifact。 While a lot of people would consider 99% of the content (regarding spiritual meanings, manifestation, and witchcraft) fake, I would say it included a lot of reasoning and evidence as to how herbs can help in daily life。 One of my favorite segments in the book was regarding rice and saffron。 Why? Very Wiccan, so if you're not one, take most of the beginning with a grain of salt。 other than that, a great guide to have in hand, very complete。 Very Wiccan, so if you're not one, take most of the beginning with a grain of salt。 other than that, a great guide to have in hand, very complete。 。。。more

TREMENDOO súper completo y al mismo tiempo breve, igual no se lo recomendaría a principiantes

A nice source of information on magical herbs。 Clear on the distinctions of poisonous herbs and has a good Folk Names Cross-Reference section; while useful, I find it slightly irritating to continuously search for the Health Codes abbreviated throughout the book。

Cunningham is the friend you need and luckily will always have。 His work is both informative and charming, as if you’re slurping down tea in his kitchen as he trots out his notes and various herbs。 His comments in the bibliography make me smile。

Vicki

An excellent, detailed resource that belongs on the shelf of any practitioner of magic and herbalism。

This isn’t really a book to review。 I read through his preface and through Part 1。 The rest is reference material。

Rating: 5++ / 5As everyone has already said about this encyclopedia, yes, it is pretty much an essential read for Wiccans, Pagans, and Witches everywhere。 Though technique-wise it doesn't go in-depth on anything and for that I'd recommend reading Cunningham's Magical Herbalism: The Secret Craft of the Wise, this would definitely be its essential companion work--or, for experienced witches, just a quick reference guide on different types of herbs and their properties and uses。Myself, I really app Rating: 5++ / 5As everyone has already said about this encyclopedia, yes, it is pretty much an essential read for Wiccans, Pagans, and Witches everywhere。 Though technique-wise it doesn't go in-depth on anything and for that I'd recommend reading Cunningham's Magical Herbalism: The Secret Craft of the Wise, this would definitely be its essential companion work--or, for experienced witches, just a quick reference guide on different types of herbs and their properties and uses。Myself, I really appreciated the layout of the book, with an index at the back for health warnings, different classifications of herbs under masculine/feminine vibrations, their uses under broad topics like love or health, and a general go-to for quick reference if I want to find something specific while scrolling through the pages。 That being said, it's a super easy to navigate book as well, since everything's alphabetical and there are lovely drawings that give each page its own aesthetic quality。 (I super love the cover as well, just to add!)All in all, an excellent read and another welcome addition to my shelves。 Would highly recommend for anyone looking to have a good reference for herbalism。 。。。more

Absolutely great book for beginners。 I enjoyed it very much。 It’s most definitely a book where you’ll be reading it more than once for general reference。

This book is an amazing reference for all things herbs!I haven't read it from cover to cover but rather dip in when needed。Scott is a known Wiccan author but that doesn't heavily influence this book (for those who aren't Wiccan)。I highly recommend for those who need a solid book about herb correspondences!
