Summary

Perspective, the author tells us, is easy; yet surprisingly few artists are aware of the simple rules that make it so。 This easy-to-follow book — the first devoted entirely to clarifying the laws of perspective — remedies the situation。 In it, the author uses over 250 simple line drawings to illustrate the concepts involved。
Beginning with clear, concise, immediately applicable discussions of the horizon, vanishing point, and the crucial relationship of eye level to perspective drawing, you'll learn how to place figures and objects in a drawing, depict interiors, create shade and shadows, and achieve all the other elements necessary for a successful perspective drawing。 By repeatedly stressing important points, Mr。 Norling teaches you to make them second-nature。 Moreover, his approach is so simple and direct that no matter how little raw talent or experience you have, you will soon be able to apply these techniques almost instinctively。
Mastery of perspective is a basic skill every artist must have。 This simple, nontechnical guide will enable you to master its essentials in a relatively short time。 Clear and concise, this book is an essential addition to any artist's bookshelf。

Excellent book, a must-have if you are involved with any kind of drawing or related activities。

It's a great book which explains perspective in a simple way with a lot of clear illustrations。 There are also many practice problems in the book to get a better idea of how to use perspective。 It also goes over any issues that you might have while drawing, and tells you how to fix them。 I literally couldn't recommend this enough。 It's a great book which explains perspective in a simple way with a lot of clear illustrations。 There are also many practice problems in the book to get a better idea of how to use perspective。 It also goes over any issues that you might have while drawing, and tells you how to fix them。 I literally couldn't recommend this enough。 。。。more

Solid intro into perspective techniques but a little too wordy and outdated at pointsfor my learning style- still really helpful though

This is the book I should have read when I started drawing。 It's the fundamentals of the fundamentals and I think every artist should have a copy。Tbh I'm still struggling to draw perspective stuff freehand and I learned that accurate proportions are my main nemesis, but hey it's a step forward! I'm feeling a lot more confident to tackle Scott Robertson's behemoth of a perspective book now。Late tho。Later。 This is the book I should have read when I started drawing。 It's the fundamentals of the fundamentals and I think every artist should have a copy。Tbh I'm still struggling to draw perspective stuff freehand and I learned that accurate proportions are my main nemesis, but hey it's a step forward! I got this out of copyright book for free (you can too) and its a real treasure。 Clear, quick practical instruction on how to apply perspective to your drawings。 Originally written in the 40's (or 50's?) the language is a little archaic, but it is very easy to follow and well illustrated by the author himself。 I got this out of copyright book for free (you can too) and its a real treasure。 Clear, quick practical instruction on how to apply perspective to your drawings。 Originally written in the 40's (or 50's?) the language is a little archaic, but it is very easy to follow and well illustrated by the author himself。 。。。more

Very good book with a lot of very useful and well explained points about perspective。Although the book is quite old, its content is still highly relevant (perspective didn't change in the last 50 years。。。)I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn or refresh the skills of perspective drawing。 Very good book with a lot of very useful and well explained points about perspective。Although the book is quite old, its content is still highly relevant (perspective didn't change in the last 50 years。。。)I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn or refresh the skills of perspective drawing。 。。。more

A bit antiquated but definitely helpful for artists who have trouble with perspective and spatial reasoning。 I didn't try many of the exercises but I'll come back and give it a shot。 Mechanical perspective doesn't seem useful at all and I completely skipped that section。 A bit antiquated but definitely helpful for artists who have trouble with perspective and spatial reasoning。 I didn't try many of the exercises but I'll come back and give it a shot。 Mechanical perspective doesn't seem useful at all and I completely skipped that section。 。。。more

Wow, Ernest Ralph Norling explains 'perspective' with so simple examples that you can easily apply in real life。 This book clears very basic topics like vanishing point, relationship of eye level to perspective, 1& 2 point perspective, shadows, interiors etc。 Actually their are many advance books on this topic but for beginners and artists, has to read this atleast once。 Wow, Ernest Ralph Norling explains 'perspective' with so simple examples that you can easily apply in real life。 This book clears very basic topics like vanishing point, relationship of eye level to perspective, 1& 2 point perspective, shadows, interiors etc。 Actually their are many advance books on this topic but for beginners and artists, has to read this atleast once。 。。。more

Very good book to read when you're starting your path in any kind of art (traditional or digital)。 The book deconstructs one of the fundamentals of art。 It explains the concepts of perspective one by one, in simple language, and allows you to evaluate your own understanding of the concepts with practical problems in each chapter。 The whole book takes around 15-20 hours to read, while performing the exercises as well。 Very good book to read when you're starting your path in any kind of art (traditional or digital)。 The book deconstructs one of the fundamentals of art。 It explains the concepts of perspective one by one, in simple language, and allows you to evaluate your own understanding of the concepts with practical problems in each chapter。 The whole book takes around 15-20 hours to read, while performing the exercises as well。 。。。more

Delivers what it says on the tin。 Simple explanation of how to apply perspective for artists。 Many clear illustrations。 Had a few “aha” moments。 Author provides simplified perspective rules and this might lead to noticeable inaccuracies in case of drawing “upright cylinders”。 But ok overall。

Intriguing but also written in a place of confusion

A brilliant exposition on perspective。 Don't be put off by the apparent simplicity - the depth of understanding that Norling conveys is so well constructed and thought out。 My view of drawing and confidence has skyrocketed。 Worth the purchase。 A brilliant exposition on perspective。 Don't be put off by the apparent simplicity - the depth of understanding that Norling conveys is so well constructed and thought out。 My view of drawing and confidence has skyrocketed。 Worth the purchase。 。。。more

Very usefulThere are so many practical techniques for using perspective correctly in this book。 I bought the kindle version but might buy a print book to have on hand when working on site。

A Necessary stop on the path to becoming a decent artist。 Norling’s instruction is both incredibly practical and really easy to apply yourself after a read-through。 This book gets a 5 star rating from me for the fact that ANYONE, no matter their ability level, can leave this book able to draw a lot of cool looking things that they couldn’t have done before。 From an urban jungle to a complex natural landscape, this book really makes the impossible possible, if you just understand the concepts lai A Necessary stop on the path to becoming a decent artist。 Norling’s instruction is both incredibly practical and really easy to apply yourself after a read-through。 This book gets a 5 star rating from me for the fact that ANYONE, no matter their ability level, can leave this book able to draw a lot of cool looking things that they couldn’t have done before。 From an urban jungle to a complex natural landscape, this book really makes the impossible possible, if you just understand the concepts laid out。 Definitely a reference book to keep in arms reach。 。。。more

As an amateur artist, this was a great book。 Some chapters were more useful than others, the last chapter lost me totally, but it shines light on an drawing topic that many artist (my self included) overlook in the beginning, so if you need to stop your tables looking like diamonds instead of squares, pick up this book。

Alexander

Love this book because of its gradual dep to the topic。 It provides a lot of practical exercises where you need to pick up your ass and do a real-life drawing by observing the environment, fold-up books one on another to see how the whole picture changes in perspective, observe the horizon and a lot of other things。。。 The most important is not being lazy while moving between chapters and do a real-life drawing。

Cleared many concepts for me。 A very useful book for anyone who wants to learn the basics of perspective drawing。 Many projects for us to do ourselves。 Would definitely recommend it。

I found this book through a recommendation from ‘Figure Drawing, For All It’s Worth’ by Andrew Loomis。 As someone who did not have the best education on drawing perspective, I figured it was worth a shot, and I am so glad I did。 It’s a relatively quick read, includes excellent diagrams, and explains the concepts in easy language。 It’s very well written, well paced, and taught me more about perspective than all my art teachers combined。 The concepts can be deceptively simple, and Norling guides t I found this book through a recommendation from ‘Figure Drawing, For All It’s Worth’ by Andrew Loomis。 As someone who did not have the best education on drawing perspective, I figured it was worth a shot, and I am so glad I did。 It’s a relatively quick read, includes excellent diagrams, and explains the concepts in easy language。 It’s very well written, well paced, and taught me more about perspective than all my art teachers combined。 The concepts can be deceptively simple, and Norling guides the reader through the steps without being patronizing。 The book also includes drawing exercises to solidify each chapter’s concepts before moving on to the next。 Keeping this one as a forever reference。 。。。more

Way too "easy" to have truly understanding of perspective。 The ellipse part is quite useful while the part of irregular spacing is totally wrong。 How exciting it is to learn something from many sources, so by comparing what you learn from one source with that of others and with your own experience, you find the truth。 Way too "easy" to have truly understanding of perspective。 The ellipse part is quite useful while the part of irregular spacing is totally wrong。 How exciting it is to learn something from many sources, so by comparing what you learn from one source with that of others and with your own experience, you find the truth。 。。。more
