Summary

THE MODERN CLASSIC: OVER 20 MILLION COPIES SOLD

Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'Cemetery of Lost Books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles that have long gone out of print。 To this library, a man brings his 10-year-old son Daniel one cold morning in 1945。 Daniel is allowed to choose one book from the shelves and pulls out 'The Shadow of the Wind' by Julian Carax。

But as he grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find。

Then, one night, as he is wandering the old streets once more, Daniel is approached by a figure who reminds him of a character from the book, a character who turns out to be the devil。 This man is tracking down every last copy of Carax's work in order to burn them。

What begins as a case of literary curiosity turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind。。。

Wonderful。 Romantic。 In praise of books and loved ones, and how they make life richly worth living。 So well placed in it's historic setting that I was surprised to see when it was written。Recommended to lovers of books, mystery, and idealistic youth (of all ages)。 Wonderful。 Romantic。 In praise of books and loved ones, and how they make life richly worth living。 So well placed in it's historic setting that I was surprised to see when it was written。Recommended to lovers of books, mystery, and idealistic youth (of all ages)。 。。。more

I liked the story, but somehow it feels like the book could’ve been shorter。 I guess this was more of a 3。8 for me。 I liked the entire story up until the cliche star wars twist。 Siblingss。。 again… -。-

It's the characters that make this book so engrossing。 By the end I cared deeply about what happened to every one of them。 Great story, and vivid setting in post-civil war Barcelona。 It's the characters that make this book so engrossing。 By the end I cared deeply about what happened to every one of them。 Great story, and vivid setting in post-civil war Barcelona。 。。。more

。。。more

This was my first venture into Zafon and i did not regret it。 His characters are so well fleshed out and the story was very gripping with its mystery surrounding a book with a secret past and the even more secretive life of its author。I would say that it was a little bit long at times and it did get a little confusing but overall I did find it enjoyable and would recommend!

My friend, David, recommended this book。 It was good, but long。 I want to read the other two books in the series。

this may be my favorite book。 it was a slow sort of maddening hunger than enveloped me as i tore through it, the story was not a thriller or resigned to only the broad term of fiction, it was the sort of book you get lost in as I did, leading me to a journey of escapism, which left me without air or words by the end。 the most impeccable type of devastating as everything became full circle, interconnecting。 each sentence was a masterpiece

A dark, gothic, quasi-historical, mystery。 Parts of it, initially, seemed unnecessarily long and I found myself needing to sort out the multiple characters。 The writing was a translation and, at times, the writing was quite rich and poetic。I didn't have a map of Barcelona in my head, so, often, parts of the story were hard to follow。 The city seemed gray and beaten and not very inviting。 I don't know if it's just me, but towards the end of the book, I was struck by how much of the story seemed t A dark, gothic, quasi-historical, mystery。 Parts of it, initially, seemed unnecessarily long and I found myself needing to sort out the multiple characters。 The writing was a translation and, at times, the writing was quite rich and poetic。I didn't have a map of Barcelona in my head, so, often, parts of the story were hard to follow。 The city seemed gray and beaten and not very inviting。 I don't know if it's just me, but towards the end of the book, I was struck by how much of the story seemed to occur at night。 A handful of the characters were quite well-developed。 Fermin was my favorite。 He was clever and had such snappy comebacks。 At other times, I was never sure if the character just introduced was going to play a significant role at some future point, and I hoped I wouldn't forget their name。 There were many of these characters。The ending sure wrapped up pretty quickly! 。。。more

It took me AGES to finish this book, but I am not sure why。 Maybe because it was more of a cerebral read than I was expecting。 Especially in this genre that I rarely read。 Not sure if I liked it or not。 In some ways it was very compelling - the characters, descriptions, and overall writing were very good, but it reminded me somewhat of my least-liked Shakespearean plays - those where you are told the set up, watch the set up, know that the set up must be undone before the play is finished and so It took me AGES to finish this book, but I am not sure why。 Maybe because it was more of a cerebral read than I was expecting。 Especially in this genre that I rarely read。 Not sure if I liked it or not。 In some ways it was very compelling - the characters, descriptions, and overall writing were very good, but it reminded me somewhat of my least-liked Shakespearean plays - those where you are told the set up, watch the set up, know that the set up must be undone before the play is finished and so you can predict what is coming but must watch through to the end anyway whether you like it or not。 Yeah, this story is a bit like that。 Clever in its parallel storylines, somewhat predictable, and maybe just a tad (unnecessarily) long。 But still enjoyable。 。。。more

I have mixed feelings about this book。 Much of the writing is beautiful, with memorable quotes, and the story is intriguing, but at times the overuse of flowery adjectives became a tedious distraction from the plot。 The use of side characters and 'letters' to resolve the mystery and fill in the details felt contrived - if I accepted it as 'poetic licence' as a way to complete the story it was fine, but it niggled me, and I thought such a good writer could have found better, more coherent ways of I have mixed feelings about this book。 Much of the writing is beautiful, with memorable quotes, and the story is intriguing, but at times the overuse of flowery adjectives became a tedious distraction from the plot。 The use of side characters and 'letters' to resolve the mystery and fill in the details felt contrived - if I accepted it as 'poetic licence' as a way to complete the story it was fine, but it niggled me, and I thought such a good writer could have found better, more coherent ways of explaining the significant details。However, I was engaged enough in the story to want to stay awake in the middle of the night to finish the book (I often don't even finish books!), and I intend to read the other books in the series 。。。more
