Summary

Why You Need a Writing Revolution in Your Classroom and How to Lead It

In recent years, with the advent of the Common Core, teachers at almost all grade levels have been expected to have students write not just narratives but also informative and argumentative essays。 To date, there's been little reliable research-backed guidance on how to teach students those skills。 The writing standards in the Common Core or similar state standards tell teachers where their students should end up, but what teachers really need is a road map that tells them how to get there。 The Writing Revolution (TWR) offers just such a road map。 It provides a clear, coherent, evidence-based method of instruction that you can use no matter what subject or grade level you teach。 This method, also known as the Hochman Method, has demonstrated, over and over, that it can turn weak writers into strong communicators by focusing on specific techniques that match their individual needs and provides them with targeted feedback。 Insurmountable as the challenges faced by many students may seem, TWR can make a dramatic difference。 You will learn how to help your students:

Identify comprehension gaps

Boost reading comprehension

Improve organizational and study skills

Enhance speaking abilities

Develop analytical capabilities

TWR is as much a method of teaching content as it is a method of teaching writing。 There's no separate writing block and no separate writing curriculum。 Instead, teachers of all subjects adapt the TWR strategies and activities to their preexisting curriculum and weave them into their content instruction。 But perhaps what's most revolutionary about the TWR method is that it takes the mystery out of learning to write well。 The TWR method lets students in on the secret。 It breaks the writing process down into manageable chunks and then has students practice the chunks they need, repeatedly, while also learning content。 Using these easy to follow and proven steps, YOU CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Makes SO much sense。 If you teach kids how to write, highly recommend!!!

Lots of great ideas for informative type writing。 Would have loved additional paragraphs on the more creative side of writing as well。 Really enjoyed the chapters on sentence building skills。

Language arts curriculum often teach skills for reading and spelling but this book provides insights on how to teach writing。 It breaks down how to write a solid sentence, a paragraph, and multi-paragraph essay。 The information is direct and provides detailed steps for teaching two levels (elementary and junior high/high school levels)。 I highly recommend reading this and implementing the methods described within。

Phenomenal! If you teach writing in any way to K-12 students, you need to read this book。 Complete gamechanger on the way we teach writing!

Such a great resource to inform your methods for teaching writing! I had no problem wrapping my head around the what and how presented in this book。 The kids also seemed to enjoy the writing activities I came up with as a result。 Honestly, the only reason I’m not sticking with it is because it simply took too much time every week prereading our history materials and coming up with lessons/worksheets。 I could see this working well for a classroom teacher who can plan one lesson for the whole bunc Such a great resource to inform your methods for teaching writing! This is still an excellent reference to keep on hand when I need some guidance though。 。。。more

In terms of a teaching book。。 this is to be the new model for writing。 Getting rid of writers workshop as we know it and infusing writing into content areas。 There are some wonderful ideas in here but I kept wanting more examples。。 in my opinion it felt quite clinical。 I have been to some wonderful writing conferences where the presenter takes you through the examples what they are looking for… not so much in this text。。 If I get the chance to work with older students for writing this is somethi In terms of a teaching book。。 this is to be the new model for writing。 Getting rid of writers workshop as we know it and infusing writing into content areas。 There are some wonderful ideas in here but I kept wanting more examples。。 in my opinion it felt quite clinical。 I have been to some wonderful writing conferences where the presenter takes you through the examples what they are looking for… not so much in this text。。 If I get the chance to work with older students for writing this is something I definitely will return to。 Right now though it reiterates a lot of what Chris Biffle does in Whole Brain Teaching and that scaffolds down low enough to engage kindergarten and first graders where this needs to be started。 。。。more

Great book, I learned lots of techniques that I can implement in the classroom。

3。5 this had some great ideas that seem relatively simple to implement。 I’m going to try a couple- ask me at the end of next year how it went 😊

Excellent and thorough。 Should be required reading for all educators。

These strategies would be easy to incorporate in any class。 The majority of my students cannot write a sentence, so these strategies seem like they may help kids grasp writing at the sentence level。 I plan to incorporate these strategies as mini-lessons and daily bell ringers next year and see how it goes!

Fantastic resource for writing teachers!!

Lots of excellent ideas which I will definitely be integrating into my own teaching practice。 Some of them seem straight-forward but I think seeing the worked examples has made me realise that the simplest ideas are often the best!

I didn't read this cover to cover, but I think this book is a must-read for all teachers, regardless of grade level or subject matter。 This book is a framework for thinking about writing instruction and introduces the idea that writing should not be taught in a vacuum, but rather across subjects and embedded into the content。If you teach elementary school and have used the Lucy Caulkins Units of Study writing curriculum, this will be a huge departure for you, but I promise it's worth it。 The ide I didn't read this cover to cover, but I think this book is a must-read for all teachers, regardless of grade level or subject matter。 This book is a framework for thinking about writing instruction and introduces the idea that writing should not be taught in a vacuum, but rather across subjects and embedded into the content。If you teach elementary school and have used the Lucy Caulkins Units of Study writing curriculum, this will be a huge departure for you, but I promise it's worth it。 The idea that we can create "a love of writing" without teaching students the practical elements of writing is ludicrous。 No one loves to do something they aren't good at。 Elementary students know their writing isn't high-quality when they can't even read it back because of the many spelling and grammar mistakes。 We absolutely can do better。 We CAN expect our students to write with correct spelling and grammar。 We CAN teach them to write complete sentences。 And once they have those basic building blocks, writing will no longer be an intimidating task, but rather a tool to express their complex thinking skills。 I have been utilizing this method of writing with a 6th-grade student I am homeschooling。 Since I began working with him this fall, he has improved his writing immensely。 When we began, he was writing so many run-on sentences it made me dizzy to read。 This writing framework coupled with robust literature and social studies instruction has allowed my student to express his deep content analysis in writing。 。。。more

Incredibly useful for my teaching practice。 I could fill it with sticky noted pages that I liked, applied and had success with。

A good friend and trusted colleague recommended this book, and I'm *so* glad she did! I love Wexler's book "The Knowledge Gap," and this one is just as good, plus even more applicable! Just a portion of the way through the book I already knew it would be a great one to use as a book study with my entire team, and this book - like Schmoker's "Focus" - is sure to be one of my foundations in leading a school。 I left this book feeling a few things: (a) Holy smokes literacy is THE thing。。。 It's ALL a A good friend and trusted colleague recommended this book, and I'm *so* glad she did! (e) Writing really does spiral, so students should actually be exposed to the SAME skills at every grade level, it's just that the way those skills are used will be more advanced in upper grades 。。。 Also, this book was NOT intuitive, which I think is a *GOOD* thing。 Apparently, what "seems right" is not working, so I'm glad we now have this tool, even if - at first glance - it seems strange。 Specifically: I would never have imagined focusing so long on freakin' SENTENCES with students。 But after reading this book, I'm more than convinced! I feel like this is definitely a book I'm going to have to read multiple times, and I'm excited to get with my team and map out how we can make this come alive。 A great read! 。。。more

This book is a must read for any educator。 It breaks down the writing process so all of our students can be successful!

This is the finest book on education I've read since The Education Gap。 It's a practical guide to teaching children how to write, and explains how to implement a writing program in a systematic, mastery-oriented manner。The authors, Hochman and Wexler (the latter wrote the aforementioned Education Gap) maintain that their method applies to all students from K to 12, but realistically it's best for the K-7 range。 Nevertheless, as a secondary humanities teacher, I think this book has really helped This is the finest book on education I've read since The Education Gap。 It's a practical guide to teaching children how to write, and explains how to implement a writing program in a systematic, mastery-oriented manner。The authors, Hochman and Wexler (the latter wrote the aforementioned Education Gap) maintain that their method applies to all students from K to 12, but realistically it's best for the K-7 range。 Nevertheless, as a secondary humanities teacher, I think this book has really helped me refine my teaching practice。 If you're a more traditional teacher who believes teachers should take an active role with their students, you'll love The Writing Revolution。 。。。more

Read this as it is being brought in at work。 Some great ideas here, that we still need to adopt。 I think you need to use all not just some of the strategies, which is what I will be working towards。

What an incredible contribution to science of reading and writing for teachers and educators。 To have not read this book is to be thoroughly in the dark about how best to teach writing and thinking。

I found this book really interesting。 I love the way that the techniques are designed to be implemented across the curriculum and that these writing skills can be used to enhance learning of content as well as just improve writing。 I appreciate the focus on performing the skills orally first but I do wonder if there needs to be more of that? On the other hand, I can see that would take time away from actual writing in class so teachers may prefer to jump into the writing。 Overall I thought this I found this book really interesting。 I love the way that the techniques are designed to be implemented across the curriculum and that these writing skills can be used to enhance learning of content as well as just improve writing。 I appreciate the focus on performing the skills orally first but I do wonder if there needs to be more of that? This is really excellent, but if you're a writing teacher you need to check out IEW in addition。 This is the same methodology and explains how to embed it with existing content, but IEW is a complete curriculum in itself。 This is really excellent, but if you're a writing teacher you need to check out IEW in addition。 This is the same methodology and explains how to embed it with existing content, but IEW is a complete curriculum in itself。 。。。more

Practical, easy to implement strategies for writing instruction for all grade levels across the curriculum。

I can not recommend this book enough! It’s practical and accessible mixed with the right amount of theory and research。 This is relevant for upper elementary all the way to high school and for every subject。 If you recognize the value of writing and want to give your students the knowledge and practice to do it well, this is absolutely the book for you。 I can’t wait to see how it impacts my students’ writing this year。

Mandy Cummings

Can’t wait to implement these strategies in my classroom!

Excellent approach to writing instruction that emphasizes sentence-level writing and building up from there。 Full of practical tips and strategies, including how to differentiate nearly every single tool presented in the book。

There's a lot of great stuff here re: thinking about sentence-level, paragraph-level, and composition-level writing as a thinking process。 My main qualm or question with this book is: to what extent do we want to prescribe the structures of essays and paragraphs? I think this is certainly a useful tool to the extent that it teaches a traditional style of writing for American schools, but I would simply question the value we place on this one style of writing。 There's a lot of great stuff here re: thinking about sentence-level, paragraph-level, and composition-level writing as a thinking process。 My main qualm or question with this book is: to what extent do we want to prescribe the structures of essays and paragraphs?
