Summary

The ultimate eye-opening journey through time and space, A Short History of Nearly Everything is the biggest-selling popular science book of the 21st century and has sold over 2 million copies。

Bill Bryson describes himself as a reluctant traveller, but even when he stays safely at home he can't contain his curiosity about the world around him。 A Short History of Nearly Everything is his quest to understand everything that has happened from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization - how we got from there, being nothing at all, to here, being us。 Bill Bryson's challenge is to take subjects that normally bore the pants off most of us, like geology, chemistry and particle physics, and see if there isn't some way to render them comprehensible to people who have never thought they could be interested in science。

The ultimate eye-opening journey through time and space, A Short History of Nearly Everything is the biggest-selling popular science book of the 21st century, and reveals the world in a way most of us have never seen it before。

It's very rarely that I enjoy a nonfiction book as much as I did this one。 I also laughed more reading this book (or exhaled amusedly, rather) than I think I ever have reading any book。 I only dock a star because my personal enjoyment dropped in the second half, maybe because it had moved on to the life sciences (which I find less interesting) It's very rarely that I enjoy a nonfiction book as much as I did this one。 I also laughed more reading this book (or exhaled amusedly, rather) than I think I ever have reading any book。 I only dock a star because my personal enjoyment dropped in the second half, maybe because it had moved on to the life sciences (which I find less interesting) 。。。more

More like 3。5, but that was interesting, with some especially engaging chapters。

Bill Bryson is very talented at simplifying complex ideas。 For years, I have never quite understood the Einstein's theory or specific scientific terms because they are all too technical, and despite the best attempts from various authors to simplify it - this one cut it for me the most personally。 From universe, to volcano, water, elements, periodic table to our ancestry and oh my。。。 The risk those scientists made to sacrifice for new knowledge or paradigm shifted blow my mind。 Recommended。 Bill Bryson is very talented at simplifying complex ideas。 For years, I have never quite understood the Einstein's theory or specific scientific terms because they are all too technical, and despite the best attempts from various authors to simplify it - this one cut it for me the most personally。 From universe, to volcano, water, elements, periodic table to our ancestry and oh my。。。 The risk those scientists made to sacrifice for new knowledge or paradigm shifted blow my mind。 Recommended。 。。。more

Bill Bryson is one of the authors I would consider to be the most accessible for any aspiring scientist or fascinated individual in any field。 He manages to truncate the bits that would otherwise create tangents or added complexity。 At the same time he chooses wonderful times to really expand certain topics, ideas, or pieces of information that enrich the overall chapter or section。At times, there can be a bit of a problem of length whether it is a chapter that seems it is taking too long to get Bill Bryson is one of the authors I would consider to be the most accessible for any aspiring scientist or fascinated individual in any field。 He manages to truncate the bits that would otherwise create tangents or added complexity。 At the same time he chooses wonderful times to really expand certain topics, ideas, or pieces of information that enrich the overall chapter or section。At times, there can be a bit of a problem of length whether it is a chapter that seems it is taking too long to get to the point, or a chapter that feels it could have been stapled to another or sliced in half。 This doesn't necessarily hurt Bryson's work, but the heavyweight paperback version certainly might dissuade someone from giving it a go。 After all, a "short" history is relative。 That being said, Bryson manages to capture the short of history of most of the universe well enough。 Video essays on YouTube can offer a really, really compact version of this book, sure。 But the story Bryson creates with this work goes beyond the dry science and puts the reader inside the universe at every point in time。 Buckle up for the ride。 。。。more

Amazing book。 He does an excellent job keeping dry scientific stuff super interesting。

Well written, interesting, needs to be read several times。 I didn’t want to take the time it deserved。May pick it up again。

I was forced to read this for my high school final year English text (one of the better texts, ya know) but I came back as a young adult and loved it。 LOVE BILL BRYSON - he is so funny, he makes science so accessible and adds so much humanity to the scientists so we can appreciate their genius, or luck, or lack of appreciation。 His writing is light and the science non-convoluted, while not removing entirely removing the theory/ heavy concepts。 It's a long book, but I highly recommend reading! I think I’m a new Bill Bryson fan。 Will definitely give other books a try。 This was a fun read。 And now I’m like at least the second smartest person alive because i know a little bit of everything。

This book is very suitable for teenagers, it has fluent and pleasant descriptions that encourage people to continue the book。

Depending on your personal interests, some chapters are either fascinating or a total bore to read。 Fortunately, the author sprinkled liberal doses of wry humour throughout the book, mitigating the pain of trying to understand obscure scientific facts。

I like Bill Bryson's work, but I am glad that I listened to the audio version as opposed to reading it。 I think it was a lot easier to digest that way。 While some of the science is probably outdated now since it was published in 2003, the ideas he conveys are more relevant now than they were 20 years ago。 I wish I had read this or something similar 20 years ago or earlier。 Might would have dislodged some of the Young Earth Creation propaganda that I was buried under growing up in a fundamentalis I like Bill Bryson's work, but I am glad that I listened to the audio version as opposed to reading it。 I think it was a lot easier to digest that way。 While some of the science is probably outdated now since it was published in 2003, the ideas he conveys are more relevant now than they were 20 years ago。 I wish I had read this or something similar 20 years ago or earlier。 Might would have dislodged some of the Young Earth Creation propaganda that I was buried under growing up in a fundamentalist environment。 。。。more

Bryson here uses his excellent talent to give an informative and sometimes entertaining overview of a broad sampling of the scientific world。 I especially appreciate the effort in digging up all the historical oddities that are sometimes overlooked in more serious works。

An amazing book for anyone looking to rekindle their love for science。 The lucid writing and usual Bill Bryson humour makes for very light reading of passages densely packed with information。 And he does that by stringing along a series of stories with remarkable circumstances and characters with their egos and what not。 This book should be made compulsory reading for high schoolers (I certainly know what I am gifting if I happen to meet one) because it can potentially stoke a lifetime of curios An amazing book for anyone looking to rekindle their love for science。 The lucid writing and usual Bill Bryson humour makes for very light reading of passages densely packed with information。 And he does that by stringing along a series of stories with remarkable circumstances and characters with their egos and what not。 This book should be made compulsory reading for high schoolers (I certainly know what I am gifting if I happen to meet one) because it can potentially stoke a lifetime of curiosity in any one of so many different fields - astronomy, geology, biology, nuclear physics, palaeontology and so on。 Highly recommend if you’re an adult too。 。。。more

An interesting exploration of what we've learned about the world through different scientific disciplines, covering the way ideas evolved in each and the people involved。It's humanizing to see the flaws in so many of them, though it's also a little exhausting to hear just how petty many of them were, and how stubbornly they clung to outdated theories。The section on extinctions was depressing - humans are the worst。 An interesting exploration of what we've learned about the world through different scientific disciplines, covering the way ideas evolved in each and the people involved。It's humanizing to see the flaws in so many of them, though it's also a little exhausting to hear just how petty many of them were, and how stubbornly they clung to outdated theories。The section on extinctions was depressing - humans are the worst。 。。。more

This is a book I’d recommend to everyone, and it’s a book I feel that everyone should read eventually。 It has everything you could ever want in an informative science book, while also keeping the audience engaged。

I absolutely loved this behemoth of a book。 I read it a while back, perhaps in 2015, and I remembered being undaunted by its massive size (about 600 pages I believe)。 The author has a wonderful conversational style that never spills into the gimmicky or overly informal。 I cannot give any author a greater compliment than to say he kept me enthralled, not only through the book’s magnitude, but also through material often considered dry。
