Fun collection to flip-through, and not nearly as much content that was seemingly pulled out of thin air (as is the case in most of his other books I've read parts of)。 Still be sure to double check that the information you're grabbing is cited elsewhere before you go using as fact though! This would be a 4-star rank but the book is extremely redundant。 There is a separate entry for each alternate name for a given entry (instead of having the main entry and listing alternate names in the main entry)。 The charts/graphs are also very difficult to comprehend。

Incredibly inaccurate。 It’s a shame so many picked up this book and read it thinking it to be true to the Professor’s works without knowing how far from the truth that is。 Learning about Middle Earth is a wonderful adventure but books like this lead so many down the wrong path

Fantastic breakdown of histories, locations, creatures, and peoples of middle earth。 I'm reading Silmarillion right now and it's difficult to keep up with everything so skimming through sections of this guide help me review what I'm most interested in。 Fantastic breakdown of histories, locations, creatures, and peoples of middle earth。 I'm reading Silmarillion right now and it's difficult to keep up with everything so skimming through sections of this guide help me review what I'm most interested in。 。。。more

Edición bonita de información que es bastante conocida pero que siempre es bueno tener a la mano y bien organizada。

It’s a helpful companion reading for delving into the very detailed and extensive world of Tolkien, especially for the first time。 It can get redundant at times though。

The illustrations are ethereal in their beauty and quality。 Delve into Middle Earth & the Undying Lands visually。

"A bestiary is a book about beasts," writes author David Day in the introduction to his own splendid addition to that unique literary genre, a class of books that has come down to us from the medieval imagination and refuses to be extinguished by modern science altogether。 And Day's book is indeed about the beasts and alien life of Tolkien's wonderful world (fire-drakes, dwarves, giant spiders, elves, eagles, orcs, trolls, ents, half-orcs, and of course Hobbits, to name but a few), but it is so "A bestiary is a book about beasts," writes author David Day in the introduction to his own splendid addition to that unique literary genre, a class of books that has come down to us from the medieval imagination and refuses to be extinguished by modern science altogether。 And Day's book is indeed about the beasts and alien life of Tolkien's wonderful world (fire-drakes, dwarves, giant spiders, elves, eagles, orcs, trolls, ents, half-orcs, and of course Hobbits, to name but a few), but it is so much more as well。 Intermingled with all the articles and descriptions about Middle-earth's various monsters, animals and even races are valuable nuggests of information and history tied in to virtually every facet of Tolkien's beloved dreamworld, plus a quality map of Middle-earth and a pair of timelines helpful for sorting out some of the historical background at a glance。 Turning through this book's beautiful pages is not only an opportunity to savor monsters of myth and magic, but a chance to see how the various elements of a great writer's imagination all fit together to create one of the most enduring literary landscapes of all time。 Be that as it may, it is still a book that fulfills its face purpose masterfully。 The alphabetized catalogue of Middle-earth's legendary denizes is written in a clear, rather academic but eminently friendly and engaging style that makes reading its contents an easy, almost compulsory task。 The illustrations, both color and monocrhome, are eye-catching, classy, and distinctive。 Perhaps too distinctive for some tastes; attractive as the pictures are individually and as a whole, they are highly stylized and often quite unrealistic。 Those who are accustomed to more true-to-life pictures may not be satisfied with much of this book's otherwise outstanding artwork。 Overall, however, the book is both visually appealing and intellectually stimulating, and one that most any Tolkien devotee or fantasy devotee should enjoy through many repeated perusals。 Definitely recommended。 。。。more

Excellent reference book to dip in and out of to discover more about Tolkein's wonderful world。 I haven't read it all, as that will be an ongoing pleasure as with all dictionaries, but it will be my constant companion for quite a while。 I have bought copies for two relatives in the past, who have been thrilled with it and so I thought it was high time I had my own。 Highly recommended。 Excellent reference book to dip in and out of to discover more about Tolkein's wonderful world。 I haven't read it all, as that will be an ongoing pleasure as with all dictionaries, but it will be my constant companion for quite a while。 I have bought copies for two relatives in the past, who have been thrilled with it and so I thought it was high time I had my own。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

I really like this book it explains a lot of stories that clear things up as an example if I wanted to know about Athens the book would say it is a city in Greece named after Athena The Goddess of War and the history of Athens

I think I read this book before I had read Lord of the Rings or seen any of the films。 I've always been enthusiastic about encyclopedias and this one beautifully lays out the worldbuilding elements like events, beasts, people and plants of Tolkien's world, accompanied with extraordinary illustrations by Ian Miller。 I think I read this book before I had read Lord of the Rings or seen any of the films。 I've always been enthusiastic about encyclopedias and this one beautifully lays out the worldbuilding elements like events, beasts, people and plants of Tolkien's world, accompanied with extraordinary illustrations by Ian Miller。 。。。more

5/5 Stars (%95/100)A brilliant and must-have dictionary for Tolkien fans but also very useful for people who are reading his books or plan to。 There is information about pretty much everything; places, trees, birds, creatures, elves, men, dwarves, and many more that I am not even going to bother to write。 The descriptions are usually short but very informative。 Some are longer than others such as Elves, Valar, Men, Bilbo Baggins, and other more important characters and places。 Thus, whenever I n 5/5 Stars (%95/100)A brilliant and must-have dictionary for Tolkien fans but also very useful for people who are reading his books or plan to。 There is information about pretty much everything; places, trees, birds, creatures, elves, men, dwarves, and many more that I am not even going to bother to write。 The descriptions are usually short but very informative。 Some are longer than others such as Elves, Valar, Men, Bilbo Baggins, and other more important characters and places。 Thus, whenever I need to look up a word about Tolkien's works, I am going to read this book instead of using the Internet。 On top of being a great dictionary, there are a lot of illustrations about the characters, places and so forth。 The only thing that bothered me a bit is the fact that they are all in black and white。 I have David Day's The Dark Powers of Tolkien and the illustrations in that book are all colored and the overall design of the book is better in my opinion。 Finally, I think this is a brilliant book if you want to easily access information about Tolkien's world and also a very good piece to have as part of a collection。 。。。more

The Dictionary is definitely a good book for every Tolkien fan to have! It offers a lot of background knowledge and an overview of many places and characters in Tolkien's world。 However, I felt that some characters and places were left out of the Dictionary。 For example, King Thranduil (Legolas father) was mentioned several times and did not get his own entry, which I felt was somewhat strange。 Despite this, I was quite happy with the Dictionary and hope to use it in the future when reading Tolk The Dictionary is definitely a good book for every Tolkien fan to have! As you might tell from the fact it has taken me almost a year to finish this book, I found it quite difficult to get into it。It is a comprehensive list of the world of middle earth and covers a lot that isn't in the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit。 There are some very interesting bits but there is a lot, and I do mean a lot, of repetition。 Even in entries that are right next to each other。 Some of the drawings drew me in but as I have the illustrated editions of the Hobbit and the Lord of the RI As you might tell from the fact it has taken me almost a year to finish this book, I found it quite difficult to get into it。It is a comprehensive list of the world of middle earth and covers a lot that isn't in the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit。 There are some very interesting bits but there is a lot, and I do mean a lot, of repetition。 Even in entries that are right next to each other。 Some of the drawings drew me in but as I have the illustrated editions of the Hobbit and the Lord of the RIngs, as well as the Realms of Tolkien these didn't fascinate me as much as they seem to have others。It wasn't a bad book, but it is more for those fans who have to have everything Tolkien, which I was at one point which is how I came to possess this book。 That said whilst I will keep it in my collection I will never read it or probably pick it up again aside from when I move house so I couldn't justify giving it more than 2 stars。 。。。more

Meant to be referenced rather than read, this book is a must for any Tolkien fan and would be a great reference for any middle Earth RPG or home brew game using the middle Earth setting。 I love the leather cover and appreciate the accompanying artwork。
