Summary

A beautifully packaged, gifty daily devotional of Stoic wisdom, from the author of The Obstacle is the Way

Modern readers praise Stoic philosophy for its unique blend of practicality and wisdom。 But it's admittedly hard for the average reader to decipher the Dover Thrift edition of Marcus Aurelius' work。 The antiquated, needlessly formal language of most modern translations is stripped down in this book, revealing powerful aphorisms that cut straight to the heart of our day-to-day challenges。

Presented in a page-per-day format, this daily resource of Stoic inspiration combines new translations of Seneca, Epictetus, Zeno by Stephen Hanselman with calls to further reflection--and action--by Ryan Holiday。 Arranged topically following the same three movements (Perception, Action, Will) that Holiday used inThe Obstacle is the Way, this guide features twelve principles for overcoming obstacles and achieving greater satisfaction。

Aimed at the high-octane, action-oriented, doers of our wired world, this book is intended to open to them a new daily ritual and a new orientation that will bring balanced action, insight, effectiveness, and serenity。

This book arrived a year ago today。 This book has inspired a lot of reflection and been my jumping off point into Stoicism and other philosophies。 Excited to get even more out of it as I go another round with it。

MOSTY QUOTES FROM EPITITUS, MARCUS AURIELIUES

What a terrific book! I decided to read the book from cover to cover and now plan to go through it on a daily basis and spend time meditating and thinking about how to apply the quoted passage of the designated Stoic to my daily life。 The brief paragraphs following each passage were very helpful in trying to completely understand the quotes。 Very nicely done! Highly recommended! 😎

I start my mornings most days with this book。 It's such a great way to prime your mind for deliberate practice of virtues first thing。 It's been a year now as I've recognized I'm re-reading, but it's still very fresh and gives me pause everyday。 I hope it stays this way。 As a big fan of Ryan Holiday, I think this might be his most impactful book despite its simplicity: the power of daily compounding! This is i guess the most easiest way to start practicing philosophy。This holds collection of ideas from all of the well known philosopheres。And Ryan Holiday has hand picked best ideas for eveyday usege and adds explanation to these ideas, so that it would be easier to follow and understand the thought process and ideas of , for example Marcus Aurelies and practice these ideas。This book helped me tons with changes that are happening right now all over the world。With perspective, with helplessness This is i guess the most easiest way to start practicing philosophy。This holds collection of ideas from all of the well known philosopheres。And Ryan Holiday has hand picked best ideas for eveyday usege and adds explanation to these ideas, so that it would be easier to follow and understand the thought process and ideas of , for example Marcus Aurelies and practice these ideas。This book helped me tons with changes that are happening right now all over the world。With perspective, with helplessness, with clarity。 。。。more

Not for me。 It was by no means badly written but I found it quite tedious。

Daily prompts to meditate on and think about for the rest of the day。I loved the concept! The daily prompts start with a quote from a famous Stoic in history, followed by a few paragraphs of "insights" or further "explanation" about it。 This is where the book fell short for me, I thought the examples and the language were a bit too shallow for the most part。 It didn't have the intensity or in depth wisdom that I was seeking。The themes were well picked however, so I'd still recommend to go throug Daily prompts to meditate on and think about for the rest of the day。I loved the concept! This book has been such a great companion。 Reading the daily quotes from Stoic philosophers has been a brilliant way to start everyday over the past year。 The quotes themselves are thematically grouped and accompanied by comments by the authors, which has been helpful to getting the most out of the ancient wisdom。 I’ll definitely return to this book。

That book gives me information, the way I control my life, the way I live,。。。 I hope to read book everyday, especially in the early morning and I can apply all I learn from that book in to my real life :)) 。。。more

DNF。 I hated this book。 I saw a couple people I follow reading this book, and I usually like their book recommendations, but this one, I couldn’t finish。 I saw another review that said they wished they had researched the author first, and I agree。 I saw that he’s associated with Tucker Max, and then it made sense why I hated it so much。A lot of the days seem to talk about ignoring your emotions and not letting them control you, but I spent my whole life doing that and am currently working on doi DNF。 I hated this book。 I saw a couple people I follow reading this book, and I usually like their book recommendations, but this one, I couldn’t finish。 I saw another review that said they wished they had researched the author first, and I agree。 I saw that he’s associated with Tucker Max, and then it made sense why I hated it so much。A lot of the days seem to talk about ignoring your emotions and not letting them control you, but I spent my whole life doing that and am currently working on doing the opposite。 From the almost two months that I read, it got pretty repetitive, so I’m giving up on it now。 。。。more

I loved this - 366 bitesize stoic lessons from the great masters of stoic thinking。 The book works so well because Holiday weaves in the classical thinking to modern day examples, and crystallises the important lessons in a clear and accessible way。 If you only read one self help book, make it this one。

Not really meant to be read through in one go。 Highly recommend to have it nearby and once in a while pick it up and read the page of the day。 I’ve been doing it for two years now and it’s a nice way to go through it。 Also an opportunity to slow down and really think about that daily topic。 It’s not a primer on stoic philosophy but an interesting way to get started in it。

I prefer the original authors。 I though it would be nice with some bite-sized daily Stoic quotes, but it was mostly shallow and felt far, far away from the original thinkers。 A good cash-grab for the assembler/commentator of this book, but a waste of money for me。

Only until 88% of the book did I realize that this book is supposed to be read in 1 year (365-366 days)。。。 How stupid am I。。。 Anyway, I finished it within a week, but I highly recommend reading it slowly over the course of one year instead。 The book offers a practical way to learn Stoicism on a daily basis, with a new lesson each day。 Serious study of the philosophy requires much more than just an idle leisure pursuit, and this book is a reminder that Stoicism is a regular practice and should be Only until 88% of the book did I realize that this book is supposed to be read in 1 year (365-366 days)。。。 How stupid am I。。。 Anyway, I finished it within a week, but I highly recommend reading it slowly over the course of one year instead。 The book offers a practical way to learn Stoicism on a daily basis, with a new lesson each day。 Serious study of the philosophy requires much more than just an idle leisure pursuit, and this book is a reminder that Stoicism is a regular practice and should be a habit。 The author uses a lot of quotes from ancient philosophers but explains them in a modern setting, which makes it easier for readers to understand and apply。 "Of all people, only those are at leisure who make time for philosophy, only they truly live。" Okay Seneca, got it。 Less Nam Joohyuk, more Marcus Aurelius。 I think I'll reread it again someday。 。。。more

This book has been life-changing for me。 I am now on my 3rd time through the book。 In 2020, read 1 meditation each day and did the journaling reflections morning and night。 Now continuing the same through 2021, and do not intend to stop。 I treasure the daily encouragement, and prioritizing time to reflect for myself。

Love this one! I feel this book made me more content。 Taught me how to not worry about things which we can not control! Enlightens the importance of Virtue! Also gives light on how unimportantmaterialist life is!

。。。more

Great book with many thoughtful quotes。 I keep returning to it in this time of the Pandemic - the original quotes from the Stoics hold the main value in it for me。
