Summary

In A Game of Thrones, George R。R。 Martin has created a genuine masterpiece, bringing together the best the genre has to offer。 Mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill the pages of the first volume in an epic series sure to delight fantansy fans everywhere。

In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing。 The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes of the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall。 At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to。 Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens。 Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones。

Late to the game in reading these。 Having watched the show, and how faithful the first couple seasons were to the books, nothing was surprising。 However, the additional context relating to the thoughts and feelings of the POV characters is really interesting。

This was the longest book I have read this year! 780 pages long with small fonts! It took me 2 full weeks, but it felt way longer! The television series – Game of Thrones – sits close to my heart。 It brings back many fond memories of my courtship with my then boyfriend, now husband。 We would make it a weekly ritual to watch GoT on HBO before we were able to record and watch everything on-demand。 This followed by a home-made dinner together discussing and analyzing the episode we just watched at This was the longest book I have read this year! 780 pages long with small fonts! The television series – Game of Thrones – sits close to my heart。 It brings back many fond memories of my courtship with my then boyfriend, now husband。 We would make it a weekly ritual to watch GoT on HBO before we were able to record and watch everything on-demand。 This followed by a home-made dinner together discussing and analyzing the episode we just watched at length。 ♥I was very keen to read the book as I had heard many good things about the same。 The extra details and thoughts of the characters added to the richness of the story。 The description of the lands and the map gave me a better idea of the sheer land of mass that the story covered。 I appreciated how easy a read it was。 It was easy follow and the story had you hooked within the first 100 pages。 I wish I read the book before I watched the series, as I found myself have a pre-made image of the characters and glossing over the descriptions。 I found Khal Drogo to be way hotter in the series than in the book。The Stark Family – as much as I loved them – the lack of communication and honesty among themselves was frustrating。 Under the name of “honor” they made life harder for themselves。 The fact that they were relying on ravens to send messages, made it worse! So much death could have been avoided if they all had access to phones。The series consists of:1。 A Game of Thrones (1996)2。 A Clash of Kings (1998)3。 A Storm of Swords (2000)4。 A Feast for Crows (2005)5。 A Dance with Dragons (2011)6。 The Winds of Winter (forthcoming)7。 A Dream of Spring (forthcoming)Do I want to start with “A Clash of Kings” next? If it were not for the reading challenge – I most definitely would。 But since time is of the essence, I will read to complete the other prompts and perhaps read this on the side。 The hope is, however, to finish the published books in the series before the author publishes The Winds of Winter which is expected to be published sometime this year。My only advice would be to get a copy of the audio books to help with completing these types of lengthier novels。 Sometimes life has other priorities like arranging for 2 birthday parties for your 5-year-old, have 5 kids “sleeping” at home for a sleep-over, binge watching the series “New Amsterdam” on Netflix, workload at work, general cold / cough symptoms, and a knitting project you find yourself doing – just because。 You got to find ways to keep reading。 。。。more

It was interesting that's for sure。 The premise is really good and I honestly like Martin's writing style, it's very through and detailed。 BUT incest and wayyyy too many children with grown adults and r*pe that it makes the book hard to get through honestly。 Plus the different POV's every chapter make it hard to read when some characters *cough cough* Catelyn *cough cough* are just so insufferable。 It was interesting that's for sure。 The premise is really good and I honestly like Martin's writing style, it's very through and detailed。 BUT incest and wayyyy too many children with grown adults and r*pe that it makes the book hard to get through honestly。 Plus the different POV's every chapter make it hard to read when some characters *cough cough* Catelyn *cough cough* are just so insufferable。 。。。more

Great concept, but TOO LONG。 Everyone dies。 Too many feasts。 Seriously, did George Martin think, "I don't know what to write here。。。。 I'll write another feast scene!"Stick with the HBO series。 It goes faster。 Great concept, but TOO LONG。 Everyone dies。 Too many feasts。 Seriously, did George Martin think, "I don't know what to write here。。。。 I'll write another feast scene!"Stick with the HBO series。 It goes faster。 。。。more

This book was a magicial one and definitely Martin is the new Tolkien。 The story of Starks, Barathions, Lannister, Targaryen and so on was a huge one, and the connection between the seven kingdoms made it easier to get on with the story。 An epic fantasy, full of shiny swords and curses, a "food" to feed the souls of the fantasy-lovers, this is a must-read-book。 This book was a magicial one and definitely Martin is the new Tolkien。 The story of Starks, Barathions, Lannister, Targaryen and so on was a huge one, and the connection between the seven kingdoms made it easier to get on with the story。 An epic fantasy, full of shiny swords and curses, a "food" to feed the souls of the fantasy-lovers, this is a must-read-book。 。。。more

Amazing book, had trouble putting it down。 Series 1 of the show is very faithful to the book, and it was fun to read, then watch, read, then watch, etc。Only complaint is the over-sexuality of teenagers in the story。 I didn't like that, even if it isn't inaccurate in a medieval world。 Still, it's something that doesn't need to be drawn out。 I compensated by aging everyone up a few years in my mind, a lot like the TV show。 Amazing book, had trouble putting it down。 Series 1 of the show is very faithful to the book, and it was fun to read, then watch, read, then watch, etc。Only complaint is the over-sexuality of teenagers in the story。 I didn't like that, even if it isn't inaccurate in a medieval world。 Still, it's something that doesn't need to be drawn out。 I compensated by aging everyone up a few years in my mind, a lot like the TV show。 。。。more

It was entertaining。 I prefer the show。 The aspect of letting the audience fall for the villein and then show the bad side does not apply in the book。

Update: Still an amazing listen the 2nd time throughQuick and Dirty: Yes yes… We know the show, we know what to expect, but the book does it better。 Always has always will。 The narrator does his best to give every character life with different voices and feels, (which takes skills as these tales have SOO many characters!) Will we ever get the final books in the series? Who knows! Possibly not, but don't let that stop you from diving in to these books。 They are worth it。 Update: Still an amazing listen the 2nd time throughQuick and Dirty: Yes yes… We know the show, we know what to expect, but the book does it better。 Always has always will。 The narrator does his best to give every character life with different voices and feels, (which takes skills as these tales have SOO many characters!) This is 2 or 3 in my list of favorite stories ever。 This book series is amazing。 The only thing wrong with this series is the author lost his commitment to finish。 Even in a pandemic with no where to go he can't finish。 Cmon George。 You have made millions from your fans。 Give them the ending they are waiting for。 Dont let Brandon Sanderson finish this one also。 This is 2 or 3 in my list of favorite stories ever。 This book series is amazing。 The only thing wrong with this series is the author lost his commitment to finish。 Even in a pandemic with no where to go he can't finish。 Cmon George。 You have made millions from your fans。 Give them the ending they are waiting for。 Dont let Brandon Sanderson finish this one also。 。。。more

This book makes for an incredibly tedious and long read because the “mystery” element of the plot—the interconnection of Jon Arryn’s death and Bran’s “accident”—isn’t a mystery to the reader。 You read from the viewpoints of multiple different characters and can easily connect the different pieces of the Lannister conspiracy, but the characters are often half a continent’s distance apart and never interact, so it takes them 600 pages to put together what you’ve known from page 50。 And it’s just b This book makes for an incredibly tedious and long read because the “mystery” element of the plot—the interconnection of Jon Arryn’s death and Bran’s “accident”—isn’t a mystery to the reader。 You read from the viewpoints of multiple different characters and can easily connect the different pieces of the Lannister conspiracy, but the characters are often half a continent’s distance apart and never interact, so it takes them 600 pages to put together what you’ve known from page 50。 And it’s just badly paced, anyways: Daenerys chapters are interspersed once every 150+ pages of the book and are strung out months apart like pearls on a string。 But her chapters and the young Stark kids + Jon make the most compelling and interesting reads, anyways。 。。。more

FINALLLLLYYYYYY!!!Really, there are too many people in this book and too many plots。 It took me till the end to get who everyone was and what they want and I'm sure I missed at least half of it。 But I did it, I read it, I'm done and feel accomplished。 Kinda creepy that most of the main characters are literally children tho, considering this plot。 Also, if you're writing fantasy and can literally make your own rules on how the world works why create one where women are still treated like crap? Happy I finally took the plunge to read the books after watching the series。 It adds a significant amount of detail that was dropped in the adaptation。

I started this on a GOT high after finishing the HBO series。 It helped being able to follow the storyline to have those TV characters in my mind。 The way each chapter jumps to a different character’s experience may have been tricky for me to follow if I didn’t have the HBO cast in mind。 Overall, pretty enjoyable book。

I was recommended this for years before I finally read it a couple of years ago。 Not to my taste in many places but the complex characters and situations have kept me reading。 I read it twice to get more out of it because with everything going on and the number of characters, I found the second reading gave me a richer experience。
