Summary

In Tithe, sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad。 Fierce and independent, she drifts from place to place with her mother’s rock band until an ominous attack forces Kaye back to her childhood home。 There, amid the blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient and violent power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms—a struggle that could very well mean her death。

In Valiant, the companion to Tithe, seventeen-year-old Valerie runs away to New York City, trying to escape a life that has utterly betrayed her。 Sporting a new identity, she takes up with a gang of squatters who live in the city’s labyrinthine subway system。 But there’s something eerily beguiling about Val’s new friends。 When one talks Val into tracking down the lair of a mysterious creature, Val finds herself torn between her affection for an honorable monster and her fear of what her new friends are becoming。

In Ironside, the sequel to Tithe, the time has come for Roiben’s coronation。 Uneasy in the midst of the malevolent Unseelie Court, pixie Kaye is sure of only one thing—her love for Roiben。 But when Kaye drunkenly declares herself to Roiben, he sends her on a seemingly impossible quest to find a faerie who can tell a lie。 Unable to see Roiben until she has fulfilled his quest, Kaye finds herself in the center of the battle of wits and weapons being waged over his throne。

Tithe- 5 starsValiant- 5 stars, (Val & Ravus = fav couple)Ironside- 5 starsSince I read this series as a whole—as one bigass book, I felt like all the stories should be rated as a whole。

Holly black has a strong writing style that keeps me interested but the character development and conflict resolution leaves much to be desired in all three books。 They all carry a nice blend  of faerie and urban conflict and decay mixed in a way that still holds the dark beauty of both。 Tithe 4。2 Valiant 3。9Soft DNF at Ironside, really lost interest

I have read several different takes on the fae/faerie/fairy and Holly Black's take was awesome! I know I am SUPER late in reading this trilogy, but better late than never。 If you are late to the party like me, I think you should pick it up and travel to the Seelie and Unseelie Courts。 I am in love with this edition and I am totally counting them as three books in my book journal。 I have read several different takes on the fae/faerie/fairy and Holly Black's take was awesome! I love holly black but this fell flat for me。 I was extra excited for this but it was not meant to be。 The stories were boring。 The characters felt flat and the romance felt non existent。 I was never emotional connect with any of the characters or struggles。 I really did struggle with wanting to pick this up。 What brings this up is the mass amount of fae knowledge。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Modern faerie tales by Holly Black is a collection of three novels titled Tithe, Valiant and Ironside, as well as a short story set in the same world of faerie。 I did not like the first novel that much but it introduces the world and characters well。 Tithe is about a girl Kaye who discovers that she is actually a changeling pixie。 When she was a child the seelie court switched her with a human child。 She grew up with a somewhat neglectful mother more interested in being a rock star than what's b Modern faerie tales by Holly Black is a collection of three novels titled Tithe, Valiant and Ironside, as well as a short story set in the same world of faerie。 I did not like the first novel that much but it introduces the world and characters well。 Tithe is about a girl Kaye who discovers that she is actually a changeling pixie。 When she was a child the seelie court switched her with a human child。 She grew up with a somewhat neglectful mother more interested in being a rock star than what's best for her child。 Kaye, saves a dark faerie knight's life only to learn that he killed a faerie friend of hers, which unknowingly results in her becoming mixed up in a conflict between the free unsworn fae, the seelie court and unseelie court。 I usually like fantasy, but here the humans appear vulgar and the faeries callous and cruel and at times the story is just a bit too bizarre。 For example a faerie torments and humiliates a human boy by making him beg and crawl after a rotten piece of fruit and then sexually exploits him。 I also at first did not think the romance between Kaye and the dark knight was a good thing。 However, Valiant and Ironside has much better storylines。 Valiant is about a girl Val, who runs away and starts living on the streets after she finds out her mother had an affair with her boyfriend。 Here she becomes mixed up with other street children who get high on faerie glamour。 One of the street children can see faeries and is in debt to a troll。 Val eventually falls in live with this good natured troll and finds out who is behind the killings of fair folk。 The only thing I didn't like in this novel was the part about drug abuse (it felt to real which is actually sort of a compliment to the writing style) and the part where a girl cruelly throws a cat in front of a train(way messed up)。 Ironside continues the story of Kaye and her knight's romance and the war between the unseelie and seelie court's。 Good ending and I like Kaye's mother's emotional growth。 The short story follows the sprite Lootie-loo, a friend of Kaye who attempts to reconcile Kaye's knight with his sister after the war。 。。。more

Okay, unpopular opinion here, but I actually liked this one better than The Folk of the Air。 While the stakes did not seem that high and maybe it wasn't as exciting, I pay a lot of attention to characters, they're most important to me, and the characters here were better, they were truly great。 I actually liked them and cared a lot about them。 The Fae were just nicer, more understandable, their behavior made sense。 I like falling for characters or wanting them as friends, and that's exactly how Okay, unpopular opinion here, but I actually liked this one better than The Folk of the Air。 While the stakes did not seem that high and maybe it wasn't as exciting, I pay a lot of attention to characters, they're most important to me, and the characters here were better, they were truly great。 I actually liked them and cared a lot about them。 The Fae were just nicer, more understandable, their behavior made sense。 I like falling for characters or wanting them as friends, and that's exactly how I felt reading those stories。 I wish there was more, cuz I already miss those guys。 。。。more

Sort of dissapointed。 I picked up this book after reading the the cruel Prince books expecting something similar but I didn't get it。 Valiant was the worst story for me by far。 Val is very annoying at times and so is Lolli both of them are so dramatic。 Also in some parts the writing style and description differed and it didn't make much sense。 Sort of dissapointed。 I picked up this book after reading the the cruel Prince books expecting something similar but I didn't get it。 Valiant was the worst story for me by far。 Val is very annoying at times and so is Lolli both of them are so dramatic。 Also in some parts the writing style and description differed and it didn't make much sense。 。。。more

There were some things I didn’t care for, but it was entertaining all the same。 It’s been a bit since I read it, so I can’t remember too much about what took place。 But it was interesting and it kept me reading。 I do recall wishing that there had been more build-up between Kaye and Roiben before their relationship, as it felt sort of rushed。 It’s not my favorite book, but I would read it again。2nd Book - ValiantI hated this book。 It’s rare that I actively dislike books but this was one of them。 To me, this book didn’t feel at all that it was about faeries until the last four chapters。 The start of the book has Val walking in on her boyfriend Tom making out with her mother, and then running away from home to NYC, and eventually finds these gutter punks to live with in an abandoned subway tunnel。 That’s really what this book was about。 Val and her new friends started shooting up Never, a drug to help faeries live in the city that gets humans high。 Then they would steal things and manipulate people into doing their bidding using the magic from Never。 At some point, there was a scene that maybe doesn’t necessarily qualify as a rape scene, but it sure as shit felt like one。 The actual plot with the faeries didn’t start until the last third of the book, and even then, it wasn’t all that interesting。 I had to force myself to read this one, and that’s not great。3rd Book - IronsideThis was by FAR my favorite of the series。 I read this one within a day。 And yeah, some characters from Valiant showed up in this one, but I truly think that you could skip Valiant and just go right from Tithe to Ironside, and not really miss a whole lot。 This book was best written out of the three of them as well, and I felt every emotion the characters were feeling。 I felt especially felt the heartbreak when Kaye told her mother that she wasn’t her actual daughter and was instead a channeling。 Would absolutely read this one again。Short Story - Lament of Lutie-LooFantastic。 10’s across the board。 Five out of five stars。 We didn’t see much of Lutie in the series, and seeing her personality and characterization in this short story thrilled me。 Also, with the appearances of Cardan and some other characters from The Folk of the Air series, it gave me life。 It also gave a glimpse into what the High Court looked like before the events of The Cruel Prince took place; and I am here for it。 。。。more

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would。 With long books, I often feel as I wasted my time or the story could've been shorter but because these were 3 books combined into one, it felt a lot more manageable and well-paced。TitheWe were introduced to the world quickly and got the gist of the plot by about halfway。 I liked the relationship between Roiben and the two Un/Seelie Queens and seeing the dynamic shift。 In this book, I didn't really care for the romance, and more enjoyed the rel I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would。 With long books, I often feel as I wasted my time or the story could've been shorter but because these were 3 books combined into one, it felt a lot more manageable and well-paced。TitheWe were introduced to the world quickly and got the gist of the plot by about halfway。 I liked the relationship between Roiben and the two Un/Seelie Queens and seeing the dynamic shift。 In this book, I didn't really care for the romance, and more enjoyed the relationship between Kaye and Corny (I do hate the name Corny though)。 However, writing this review a few days after reading it, I find I have forgotten the majority of this book as there was only one major plotline going on, with no sub-plots。ValiantMy favourite thing about this book was Val's introduction, journey, and withdrawal of drugs and how Holly Black showed the never-ending cycle of substance abuse。 Out of the 3, this was the most memorable and I rather enjoyed the unlikely romance between Val and Ravus。 This felt the most urban fantasy as we were really drawn into the bustling life of city。 Val's journey into Fae felt quick, yet believable。 People reactly differently in situations like the one Val was put into and she responded by meeting a bunch of Fae-hating drug addicts, as you do。 Lolli was an extremely interesting character which I enjoyed reading。 She was unpredictable, flimsy, obsessive but you can see why she can't stop, even if it does mean she's a maniac at some points。IronsideThe blurb of this book was rather misleading: it mentioned Val and Kaye yet we only followed Kaye with one or two mentions about Kaye。 However, I did like the crossover of Luis and Kaye, and also the romance blossoming with Luis and Corny。 I did feel a bit uncomfortable with how comfortable Kaye got with Corny, all touchy-touchy, after just a few months of knowing each other。 It was hard not to feel like Kaye was only like this because she knew Corny was gay and wouldn't see her romantically。 Also, I disliked Kaye a lot when she outed Corny to Luis, it was not her place。 But, on the positive side: I enjoyed the romance more between Roiben and Kaye, seeing the complications of it and what forced Roiben to send Kaye on an impossible task。 I also liked the development of Corny, as it shows how humans become greedy for what they can't have, we always want more, we want to be more powerful, we want to be invincible, we want to be brave and strong。 To wrap up, the only reason this book got 3 stars instead of 4 was because I merely enjoyed it。 I didn't love it, I wasn't sucked into it, I wasn't attached to the characters。 I believe the main reason I love 'The Folk of Air' trilogy so much is because of the characters; Black's writing is quite simple and worldbuilding was mediocre。 I'm not passionate about this book, but I also don't dislike it。 If you like Black's other books I would recommend this book if you want more of the Fae。 。。。more
