Summary

Aslan Kennedy has an idyllic life: Leader of a Spiritual Retreat for wealthy holidaymakers on one of the Caribbean's most unspoilt islands, Saint Marie。 Until he’s murdered, that is。 The case seems open and shut: when Aslan was killed he was inside a locked room with only five other people, one of whom has already confessed to the murder。

Detective Inspector Richard Poole is hot, bothered, and fed up with talking to witnesses who’d rather discuss his ‘aura' than their whereabouts at the time of the murder。 But he also knows that the facts of the case don’t quite stack up。 In fact, he’s convinced that the person who’s just confessed to the murder is the one person who couldn’t have done it。 Determined to track down the real killer, DI Poole is soon on the trail, and no stone will be left unturned。

A Meditation on Murder is a really, really fun novel in the perfect spirit of Richard’s era of the Death in Paradise show。The book represented one of my favourite characters in anything ever — Detective-Inspector Richard Poole — incredibly sweetly。 It retained his blushing internal denial of his fondness for Sergeant Bordey, his stuffy and endearingly English insistence on wearing wool suits in the Caribbean, his brilliance, and his respect for the rest of his team (Detective-Sergeant Camille Bo A Meditation on Murder is a really, really fun novel in the perfect spirit of Richard’s era of the Death in Paradise show。The book represented one of my favourite characters in anything ever — Detective-Inspector Richard Poole — incredibly sweetly。 It retained his blushing internal denial of his fondness for Sergeant Bordey, his stuffy and endearingly English insistence on wearing wool suits in the Caribbean, his brilliance, and his respect for the rest of his team (Detective-Sergeant Camille Bordey, Police-Sergeant Fidel Best, and Police-Officer Dwayne Myers)。Richard, both in the TV series and in the books, is one of the most strongly autistic-coded characters I’ve read。 Whether this is deliberate by Robert Thorogood (writer of the books and showrunner of the TV) and Ben Miller (Richard’s actor) or not, it’s certainly true, and he makes me feel happy in being autistic, because he’s loved and respected by his team for what, like it or not, are autistic traits。Death in Paradise is a comedy show with the structure of a mystery show, and I think that A Meditation on Murder reflected this well。 From Richard’s disgruntled internal (excuse the French) bitching about an attractive man who’s after calling Camille “sexually adventurous”, to his amused commentary on the legality of Dwayne’s police harley-davidson, the narrative voice of A Meditation on Murder simulated Ben Miller’s acting very well。The grammar was pretty shoddy in places, to the point of my occasionally having to stop and think for a second to be sure of the intended meaning, but overall the book was not too difficult to read。The mystery itself was fun, but as I wasn’t really reading the book to try and solve the murder before Richard revealed it — rather to enjoy him and Camille — I can’t truly comment on that。Would highly recommend both A Meditation on Murder and the Death in Paradise TV series, although one should watch series one and two (Richard’s era) of the show before reading the books, in my opinion。 。。。more

Starts off good, bit slow in the middle, wraps up relatively nicely。I'm a fan of Death in Paradise, though I came to it late and last year I watched all the episodes from beginning to end。 Richard Poole was an absolutely fantastic character and I don't think I could ever forgive the writers for the way they had his character depart the show (though Ben Miller had a completely justifiable reason for leaving)。 It took me this long to discover that there are actually books which carried on his char Starts off good, bit slow in the middle, wraps up relatively nicely。I'm a fan of Death in Paradise, though I came to it late and last year I watched all the episodes from beginning to end。 Richard Poole was an absolutely fantastic character and I don't think I could ever forgive the writers for the way they had his character depart the show (though Ben Miller had a completely justifiable reason for leaving)。 It took me this long to discover that there are actually books which carried on his characters adventures。It's a good mystery, there are so many twists and turns and it feels a bit like it goes on too long。 That is potentially because I'm so used to seeing these mysteries play out on screen and of course we're looking and two different forms of storytelling here。 But it's a well laid out mystery, all things considered。 There's some great humour in there too and all in all, the book is absorbing and relatively easy reading, though the writing technique feels a bit juvenile at times。 。。。more

If you like the show, you will like the book。 The book follows the same exact same pace as the show。 So if you are hesitate to read this, watch an episode or two first。 It will save you a bunch of time and some money。 Ideally watch season 1 or 2 to see the Richard character in peak form。I appreciated the additional insight into Richard。 Reading his thoughts help me to better understand his manner and decision making when looking back on the show。 Camille has a much bigger role in the show, and I If you like the show, you will like the book。 The book follows the same exact same pace as the show。 So if you are hesitate to read this, watch an episode or two first。 It will save you a bunch of time and some money。 Ideally watch season 1 or 2 to see the Richard character in peak form。I appreciated the additional insight into Richard。 Reading his thoughts help me to better understand his manner and decision making when looking back on the show。 Camille has a much bigger role in the show, and I am hoping to see more of her as the books continue。 Plus their chemistry was so much fun。 。。。more

3。5 Enjoyable, Richard is so likable despite his efforts to appear distant。 The mystery is not straight forward and that makes each discovery more exciting。 I just felt that the end was a bit longer than necessary。

I LOVED this book! I wasn’t even upset it doesn’t have an audiobook because I enjoyed the down time relaxing while reading this Kindle edition。 Immediately bought the next two in the series。 Great Caribbean murder mystery with a funny English detective and a locked room mystery that I didn’t have a clue about。 Loved it! 😍

A light summer read。 Death in Paradise series is based on these books and, if you watch the series, you can hear the characters voices as you read。 Not challenging but entertaining。

Loved the TV series! Was glad to meet the characters again, and learn a bit more of Richard's personality。 Starting the morning with a session of sunrise healing sounds good。 Loved the TV series!

This was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, with frustrating amounts of repetition that were somewhat jarring at times。 But, such trifles aside, I have been binging the 'Death in Paradise' TV series over the past few weeks, and it was an absolute joy to be in the company of Richard Poole, Camille, Fidel, and Dwayne, once again。 An excellent mystery, lots of fun, and am definitely moving onto Book #2。 Keep them coming please! Ive never watched the Death in Paradise TV show, but I read one of Robert Thorogood’s other books earlier this year and knew I had to read more when I had the chance。 I managed to finish this in less than a day it was such an easy read。 It was humorous, well paced and the crime itself was quite unique。 I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and will definitely pick up the next one at some point in the future - solid 4 stars!

3。5 stars。 This was a fun "cozy" mystery set in the world of the BBC Death in Pardise series。 It provided the "just right" escape during the heat of summer。 3。5 stars。 This was a fun "cozy" mystery set in the world of the BBC Death in Pardise series。 It provided the "just right" escape during the heat of summer。 。。。more

Lovely for what it was。 As a huge Death in Paradise fan, I will say that reading this was similar to the show but lacked some of the charm and fun。 Story unfolded in a very similar manner though, and it was a nice cozy island mystery。 At times felt like I was reading a script, but it lacked some of the character quirks and relationships that make the show work so well。 Still, I enjoyed it and will probably pop back for the next few。

2。0 stars - Characters stale。 Mystery fails I found the main character to be a very stereotypical grumpy quirky Brit and I found his quirks more annoying than endearing, I did not care about his relationship with a lizard。 It didn’t help that he was a bit of a jerk and yet we were constantly told how everyone was forgiving of his flaws and liked him。 No idea why。 I also found the other background characters to be kinda stock and forgettable。That being said my core enjoyment of the book was alw 2。0 stars - Characters stale。 Mystery fails I found the main character to be a very stereotypical grumpy quirky Brit and I found his quirks more annoying than endearing, I did not care about his relationship with a lizard。 It didn’t help that he was a bit of a jerk and yet we were constantly told how everyone was forgiving of his flaws and liked him。 No idea why。 I also found the other background characters to be kinda stock and forgettable。That being said my core enjoyment of the book was always going to come down to how well the mystery was done。 As you can see from my rating I think the mystery completely fails and thinks it’s cleverer than it really is。(view spoiler)[ If you are going to lie to your audience at least make it a good lie。 I suspected that the murderer wasn’t one of the original people in the paper house from the get go。 It wasn’t helped out by the insistence that THE KILLER HAD TO BE ONE OF THE PEOPLE IN THE PAPER HOUSE。 It kinda feels like the author cheated… but badly so they still didn’t win。I think this did an okay job of giving the suspects motives。 Even if they largely are all the same but when you figure out the killer from the beginning it's hard to get invested or come up with alternate theories。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Two stars means 。。。 well, it’s a book。 But not much else。 It’s not a fair comparison, but I am also reading through the Phryne Fisher Mysteries by Kerry Greenwood and the difference in authorial spark is noticeable。 “A Meditation on Murder” doesn’t manage to get past the police procedural roots, heavy on the repetition and exposition。 There were a couple of nice dialogue bits, but they got lost in the endless clue regurgitations。 Not likely to read the second book but highly recommend “Death in Two stars means 。。。 well, it’s a book。 But not much else。 It’s not a fair comparison, but I am also reading through the Phryne Fisher Mysteries by Kerry Greenwood and the difference in authorial spark is noticeable。 “A Meditation on Murder” doesn’t manage to get past the police procedural roots, heavy on the repetition and exposition。 There were a couple of nice dialogue bits, but they got lost in the endless clue regurgitations。 Not likely to read the second book but highly recommend “Death in Paradise,” the TV series it is based on。 。。。more

Richard Poole would really like Adrian Monk!Diverse and interesting characters and so many twists and turns to make you dizzy。 Just when you think the case is about to be resolved, the author comes with a plausible yeah, but what if。I used to live in an island in the Caribbean, very close to where this story takes place (Guadeloupe, not the fictional city lol) I could not stand the heat and the humidity, loved the beach but in order to get Just two words Clever and Funny。 What a delightful book!
