Summary

Life isn't like the movies。 But then again, 11-year-old Turtle is no Shirley Temple。

She's smart and tough and has seen enough of the world not to expect a Hollywood ending。 After all, it's 1935 and jobs and money and sometimes even dreams are scarce。 So when Turtle's mama gets a job housekeeping for a lady who doesn't like kids, Turtle says goodbye without a tear and heads off to Key West, Florida, to live with relatives she's never met。 Florida's like nothing Turtle's ever seen before though。 It's hot and strange, full of ragtag boy cousins, family secrets, scams, and even buried pirate treasure! Before she knows what's happened, Turtle finds herself coming out of the shell she's spent her life building, and as she does, her world opens up in the most unexpected ways。 Filled with adventure, humor and heart, Turtle in Paradise is an instant classic both boys and girls will love。

There are so many amazing graphic novels out there that sometimes it’s hard to know which one to pick up! I do love a ragtag group, and especially this "Diaper Gang"! Tropical colors and Depression-era visuals really complement this wonderful story。 And did you spot the 🐈‍⬛ on the cover?? How could I not love this book? 。。。more

I read Turtle in Paradise almost 10 years ago and it continues to be one of my favorite fiction books… when I found out the graphic novel was released, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and just let me say that it did not disappoint。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I love the setting and the story behind this graphic novel。 Although it may be a children’s book, there is such a great meaning behind it that even adults can learn。 When Turtle found the treasure, it may seem like a basic treasure, but I think the true meaning of treasure is seeing her mother return for her and for Turtle to realize how much she cherishes her mother。 I think what also makes this story such a great story is the ending, where even though life can give you all kinds of obstacles a I love the setting and the story behind this graphic novel。 Although it may be a children’s book, there is such a great meaning behind it that even adults can learn。 When Turtle found the treasure, it may seem like a basic treasure, but I think the true meaning of treasure is seeing her mother return for her and for Turtle to realize how much she cherishes her mother。 I think what also makes this story such a great story is the ending, where even though life can give you all kinds of obstacles and hardships, somehow you always end up back to where you first began, and where true people who care and will cherish you are the ones who were there since the beginning。 I think family is such a wonderful gift and it’s something that people will understand and learn to love later on in their life。I also love the closeness of each character and how even though it is a small town, there is so much love towards one another。 My mother used to tell me a lot of stories of her growing up in the village and after reading this book, I can see why she loves her childhood so much。 。。。more

This was a cute little graphic novel。 Apparently it's an actual novel too but I'm not sure there's enough here to sustain me for a full book (I'm assuming it's YA or children's?)。 The illustrations were great and really brought alive Depression Era Key West。 This was a cute little graphic novel。 Apparently it's an actual novel too but I'm not sure there's enough here to sustain me for a full book (I'm assuming it's YA or children's?)。 The illustrations were great and really brought alive Depression Era Key West。 。。。more

Beautiful art。 Good story, felt a bit rushed/compressed in the format。

I read the novel and loved it, the graphic novel does not disappoint, while of course it does leave out parts of the original story, it keeps the integrity of the original。

While I haven't read the original novel, this was an interesting enough story in a setting I didn't know much about。 Liked the drawing style and atmosphere。 While I think kids will enjoy this, the ending and final revelation was rather abrupt and I'm not sure if it'll throw them。 While I haven't read the original novel, this was an interesting enough story in a setting I didn't know much about。 Liked the drawing style and atmosphere。 While I think kids will enjoy this, the ending and final revelation was rather abrupt and I'm not sure if it'll throw them。 。。。more

Historical fiction hasn't really been my jam lately, so I wasn't instantly feeling the love when I picked up this book。 However, it quickly grew on me, and I realized how much I was enjoying its slow unfurling of a world very different from my own。Set in the 1930s in the Florida Keys, this book tackles a lot of interesting themes without ever feeling overwhelming。 It's easy to identify with Turtle's childhood emotions and actions, and I think her authenticity and that of the boys in the Diaper G Historical fiction hasn't really been my jam lately, so I wasn't instantly feeling the love when I picked up this book。 However, it quickly grew on me, and I realized how much I was enjoying its slow unfurling of a world very different from my own。Set in the 1930s in the Florida Keys, this book tackles a lot of interesting themes without ever feeling overwhelming。 It's easy to identify with Turtle's childhood emotions and actions, and I think her authenticity and that of the boys in the Diaper Gang was the major element that pulled me right into the narrative。 I also very much appreciated that Turtle is a rather prickly sort, and that it's her prickliness that enables her to connect with her admittedly rather terrible grandmother。 It did make me think about what it would have been like to be something of an unconventional woman in a time like that。I also liked the subplot about Turtle's mother and the effects her behaviors have had on Turtle's life。 I do wish this had been a bit better developed, that we would have had more insight into what's made her mother such a dreamer, but maybe the novel does that。 As it was, I liked what this book had to say about how kids are often at the mercy of the whims of adults, and how that system is sometimes extremely unfair to kids。 The ways in which Turtle reacts to her lack of agency do a lot to help flush out her character and make her feel more three-dimensional。Lastly, I appreciated that the book didn't shy away from some of the harsh realities of the world Turtle lived in, but that it did so in a manner that felt authentic to the setting。 I'm not sure kids who know nothing about The Depression would understand it on the same level as an adult like me, but at the time what was going on would have felt incidental to the kids, in the same way major events always feel incidental to kids, even when they're having a profound effect on that kid's life。 The kids aren't oblivious; they're aware of their reality, but that's just the way things are。 They go on living the lives they have。 That level of realism resonated with me。I've read multiple books/graphic novels by Jennifer Holm and find her a very engaging author。 She has a way of getting right to the heart of things, of making you feel for her characters, that is very gripping。 There's a lot of quality middle grade lit out there, but Holm stands out for me。 I don't think she's let me down yet, and I'm not sure she gets as much recognition as she should for being an outstanding author in the genre。 。。。more

Loved the book and loved the graphic novel。 If you read one you should read them both。 Turtle's story is an interesting part of the Florida Keys history。 Kids were kids, but they were also growing up in a hard part of history between the Great Depression and WWII。 The graphics bring the story to live。 Thank you Jennifer L。 Holm, for a heartwarming adventurous story for all ages。 Loved the book and loved the graphic novel。 If you read one you should read them both。 Turtle's story is an interesting part of the Florida Keys history。 Kids were kids, but they were also growing up in a hard part of history between the Great Depression and WWII。 The graphics bring the story to live。 Thank you Jennifer L。 Holm, for a heartwarming adventurous story for all ages。 。。。more

I enjoyed this juvenile graphic novel about a girl sent to live with her aunt and cousins in Key West during the Great Depression。 The story gave an interesting glimpse into what life was like there during that difficult time frame。

While I liked this as an adult, I am not sure how much kid appeal the subject matter has other than the treasure hunt。I am a huge fan of Jennifer Holm, her squish and babymouse books are beloved in my school library。

This was a great graphic novel adaptation of the book。 Loads of historical detail with great illustrations to match。 There's an author and illustrator's note, plus a few pages explaining how graphic novels are made。 Ps- didn't know there was a second book! I remember wanting more after reading the novel version years ago。 Now I have it! This took a while to grow on me, I think mostly because it almost seemed too simplistic: short sentences, not a lot of information given, the style of the art。 But as the story progressed I was charmed, I loved Turtle and the Diaper Gang (and how much did I love that ragtag group of boys who were pros with babies?!) and I loved the story。 I never fully warmed up to the art, though it worked with the story quite well。 I feel like if I read it again, I'd like it more。 This took a while to grow on me, I think mostly because it almost seemed too simplistic: short sentences, not a lot of information given, the style of the art。 But as the story progressed I was charmed, I loved Turtle and the Diaper Gang (and how much did I love that ragtag group of boys who were pros with babies?!) and I loved the story。 I never fully warmed up to the art, though it worked with the story quite well。 I feel like if I read it again, I'd like it more。 。。。more

Sweet story, lovely drawings。 Just wanted a bit more in the resolution and the family history, but maybe this is something to be tackled in a sequel。

Haven’t read the novel but really liked the graphic novel。 Historical fiction about depression era Key West with an adventurous, rough and tumble story。 Fun illustrations。 Definitely read the notes at the end!

a charming and funny (like the original chapter book) historical graphic novel; my only disappointment but that it did not include the kids making a cut-up from fresh fruit, which was the most memorable thing about the original book

This one was cute。 Many feel good moments with horrible ones mixed in。 I loved all of the Shirley Temple references。

Loved this adaptation, with art by co-author of Bloom (ya graphic romance I loved a couple years ago)。Brought back all the feels of the source novel。

Slice-of-life set in Key West, Florida。 Very charming。 Turtle is a no-nonsense girl who has been sent to live with her aunt while her mom is whooed by a smooth-talking salesman and trying to make ends meet two years after the Great Depression。I enjoyed the cast of characters, and all the mini adventures were fun。 Even the emotional moments were well-done to me。 One nitpick: I thought the conclusion with Slowpoke, an old friend of Turtle's mom, was very open-ended and unfinished (is it elaborated Slice-of-life set in Key West, Florida。 Very charming。 Turtle is a no-nonsense girl who has been sent to live with her aunt while her mom is whooed by a smooth-talking salesman and trying to make ends meet two years after the Great Depression。I enjoyed the cast of characters, and all the mini adventures were fun。 Even the emotional moments were well-done to me。 One nitpick: I thought the conclusion with Slowpoke, an old friend of Turtle's mom, was very open-ended and unfinished (is it elaborated more in the book version?)。 (view spoiler)[I would've liked to see him take Archie's place。 (hide spoiler)]a little disbelief:(view spoiler)[this is set in 1930's (United States)。 would Pork Chop's brown-skinned Latino family really have fit in back then??? This was a disappointment for me。 I read the book a long time ago and randomly picked this up。 Not sure why except it would be a quick read。 It was but not memorable, the book is definitely better。 So many unlikeable characters。
