Summary

At last in paperback in one complete volume, here are the five novels from Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker series。

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

Seconds before the Earth is demolished for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is saved by Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised Guide。 Together they stick out their thumbs to the stars and begin a wild journey through time and space。

"The Restaurant at the End of the Universe"

Facing annihilation at the hands of warmongers is a curious time to crave tea。 It could only happen to the cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his comrades as they hurtle across the galaxy in a desperate search for a place to eat。

"Life, the Universe and Everything"

The unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky- so they plan to destroy it。 The universe, that is。 Now only five individuals can avert Armageddon: mild-mannered Arthur Dent and his stalwart crew。

"So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish"

Back on Earth, Arthur Dent is ready to believe that the past eight years were all just a figment of his stressed-out imagination。 But a gift-wrapped fishbowl with a cryptic inscription conspires to thrust him back to reality。 So to speak。

"Mostly Harmless"

Just when Arthur Dent makes the terrible mistake of starting to enjoy life, all hell breaks loose。 Can he save the Earth from total obliteration? Can he save the Guide from a hostile alien takeover? Can he save his daughter from herself?

Also includes the short story "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe"。

This book is the best science fiction book ever。 It is wonderfully weird and provides great imagery to support its story which reaches across the entire universe。

after a year and a half, finally finished all 5。 the foreword is correct。。。 adams is a genius。 every page is clever and ridiculous, but seamlessly written。 immersive without tedious detail。 this has been a great inspiration and source of joy for me。 on to more satire, and looking forwards to reading more douglas adams。

Read this 30 years ago in high school and loved it。 Recently reaquainted myself with it from the old bbc production。 Frankly after the last year or two it may be the exact right mix of existential exploration and being just plain silly to ease my mind in these troubled times。

Half these books make no sense but they're all funny and I still remember the guy who broke a deer's neck by hugging it so I guess they're pretty good Half these books make no sense but they're all funny and I still remember the guy who broke a deer's neck by hugging it so I guess they're pretty good 。。。more

The book is a bit strange for my taste。。。 Maybe I am a conformist。。。 I appreciate the wit and insights regarding religion and famous shrines, rebirths and everything。。 but overall, too loose and vague。。。。

A wonderfully funny satire of all thing science fiction, there's a reason this series is so beloved。 Expertly written lines, observations, and situations lead to this being a must read for fans of humor and science fiction。 The only downside to the collection of the five novels in the series is the first book is exceptional and the second is great。 The more you read you start to have some diminishing returns。 Still enjoyable but not as perfect。 A wonderfully funny satire of all thing science fiction, there's a reason this series is so beloved。 Expertly written lines, observations, and situations lead to this being a must read for fans of humor and science fiction。 The only downside to the collection of the five novels in the series is the first book is exceptional and the second is great。 The more you read you start to have some diminishing returns。 Still enjoyable but not as perfect。 。。。more

Okay 。。。 finally - FINALLY - I get why, every time someone sent around a good-bye email at the huge tech company I used to work for, engineers would always title their note "So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish"。 GEEKS。I bought this book, oh 。。。 over 20 years ago? Because? "Because"。 I met my geeky nerdy husband almost 16 years ago and it was always "oh, yeah。 have you read that yet? no, right? we should read that soon" Soon turned into over a decade point five。 Now, this is NOT one of those boo Okay 。。。 finally - FINALLY - I get why, every time someone sent around a good-bye email at the huge tech company I used to work for, engineers would always title their note "So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish"。 GEEKS。I bought this book, oh 。。。 over 20 years ago? Because? "Because"。 I met my geeky nerdy husband almost 16 years ago and it was always "oh, yeah。 have you read that yet? no, right? we should read that soon" Soon turned into over a decade point five。 Now, this is NOT one of those books that I am facepalming over and saying "why the hell did I wait so long???? OMG I should have read this book (these books) SOONER!!!" Nope。 Not at all。 I read it now。 (or rather, had my husband read it to me at bedtime)。 It was a task to be dealt with。 It was something to check off the list。 It has now been done。 All effin' books of this damnable series are FINISHED。 "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" / "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" / "Life, the Universe and Everything" / "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish" / "Mostly Harmless" and the short story "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe"。I did have a big "ah-HA!!!" moment when the cookie story was told (I took a cookie, he took a cookie, I thought he was stealing my cookies, turns out they were HIS cookies all along and he was sharing them with me 。。。) thinking "OOOOHHHH! So THAT'S where that story comes from!" only to find out (from snopes。com) that Douglas Adams co-opted it himself, and that the story's been around since the 70s。 So: I。 Am。 Disappointed。 。。。more

Highly recommended : If you like funny books or sci-fi books or books that go on forever but when they end, you wish they didn't, or if you like to have a sandwich at 2 AM for no good reason。 Review: Mostly Harmless Highly recommended : If you like funny books or sci-fi books or books that go on forever but when they end, you wish they didn't, or if you like to have a sandwich at 2 AM for no good reason。 Review: Mostly Harmless 。。。more

One of the funniest, creative and smart books I've ever come across。 Ideas that just flip your mind and take a piss at all science fiction tropes。 Read it for the first time as a teen and again during uni。。。thinking of starting again。 Must read! #1 "Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy": The induction of the series was flawless。 There is wit, there is humor, there is science fiction, there is space chase, there is plot twist。 All the right ingredients matched and formed an enjoyable reading。 Considered the book was written in 1979, it did a good job of being still hilarious today。 And the big twist is right at the cover of the book。 4/5。#2 "The Restaurant at the End of Universe: The second book is far too random compare to the first one。 It #1 "Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy": The induction of the series was flawless。 There is wit, there is humor, there is science fiction, there is space chase, there is plot twist。 All the right ingredients matched and formed an enjoyable reading。 Considered the book was written in 1979, it did a good job of being still hilarious today。 And the big twist is right at the cover of the book。 4/5。#2 "The Restaurant at the End of Universe: The second book is far too random compare to the first one。 Its logic is gradually decrease throughout the texts。 Typical chase, some magic happened and crisis adverted。 The plot armor is way too strong for the mains。The book has some perks that worth reading but to get that bits i always need to get through bouts of nonsense。 3/5。#3 "Life, the Universe and Everything": This book is way more random and incoherent than the first 2。 The precedents have their nonsense but at least they are connected with a story line。For this book it seems that the author is completely out of ideas and randomly throwing daily events to fill in。 An aimless direction of a forced story with odd events makes it a bore to read。 2/5。#4 "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish": The title is actually misleading since the dolphins play no major part in the story。 The author took a new direction for the story and it turned out quite pleasant for ordinary readers like me。 The book turned romance genre。 The story sparked genuine interest with less wacky bits。 Win-win。 And Arthur did it in the sky。 3/5。#5 "Mostly Harmless": In an interview, Adams expressed dissatisfaction with the tone of this book, which he blamed on personal problems, "for all sorts of personal reasons that I don't want to go into, I just had a thoroughly miserable year, and I was trying to write a book against that background。 And, guess what, it was a rather bleak book!"。 This fully summarizes the fifth book。 And the ending is bad。 2/5。 。。。more

What an absolutely and utterly pointless book。 There is no plot, no one makes good decisions and it’s ridiculously long。 Kind of like life。 So no, there’s no plot, but realized I don’t really have a plot either。 It kind of just takes you where it will take you and you can either decide to end up on a planet where you become the sandwich maker or are you gonna be on a planet where people bite you as a form of communication。 The choice is really up to you。 I will say though as others have also not What an absolutely and utterly pointless book。 There is no plot, no one makes good decisions and it’s ridiculously long。 Kind of like life。 So no, there’s no plot, but realized I don’t really have a plot either。 It kind of just takes you where it will take you and you can either decide to end up on a planet where you become the sandwich maker or are you gonna be on a planet where people bite you as a form of communication。 The choice is really up to you。 I will say though as others have also noted that this book is very very long。 It’s also very very funny。 However reading through it in one sitting kind of grates on you。 I read it three books at a time with a completely different book by a completely different author in between。 But even that was a bit much。 I would recommend no more than two book at a time so that the humor doesn’t wear off。 But hey, that up to you。 The only rule you have to follow is “Don’t panic” 。。。more

It would feel like blasphemy to give this less than five stars。 Mind-bendingly unique and hilarious, I wish I was smart enough to come up with something half as good。 It is a classic across a myriad of forms and genres that will stand the test of time。
