Summary

Hugo Award-winning author Timothy Zahn brings his epic two-volume series The Hand of Thrawn to an explosive conclusion with a discovery that rocks the New Republic to its foundations--and threatens to resurrect the Empire。

The Empire's master plan is under way。 The New Republic is on the verge of civil war and the rumor that the legendary Admiral Thrawn has returned from the dead is rallying the Imperial forces。 Now Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and their allies face the challenge of their lives。 They must infiltrate a hidden fortress filled with Imperial fanatics, rendezvous with a double-dealing Imperial commander, and journey into enemy territory to learn the identity of those responsible for an act of unthinkable genocide。 But most important of all is the truth about Thrawn。 In his hands--alive or dead--rests the fate of the New Republic。

4 starsHahahahahaha this shit slapped! I much preferred this book to spectre of the past。 I felt like that one was more of a build up in conflict while vision of the future was the execution。 Luke and Mara Jade’s chapters are fantastic and I was always invested in what they were doing。 Mara character development in the star wars EU is ~amazing~!! Also all the Jedi stuff in their chapters was a plus。 ALSO child of winds! He was so cute! The more military chapters are interesting at points also but 4 starsHahahahahaha this shit slapped! I definitely recommend reading these after Heir to the Empire because the characters stories continue beautifully with Zahn filling all the gaps inbetween。 。。。more

I think this is the best installment of the pre 2000 series。

Not bad, but also not amazing。 A lot of meandering, but wraps up OK。

Visions of the Future read like the second and third act of a great Star Wars movie。 The first act was Specter of the past, which makes sense as they were written as a duology。 There were many plots happening all at once。 At times it was hard to keep them all straight。 But it all came together in an unexpected way。 ( I love when a book does the unexpected = thoughtful and creative writing!) I really enjoyed some of the more personal stories and relationships。 Reading about Leia and Han, Luke and Mara, Lando and Lobot, and Wedge and Corran, and the Noghri and even Admiral Pellaeon, felt like catching up with old friends。 Timothy Zahn is the best StarWars author I’ve come across, so far。 His characters are fully dimensional with insights into motive, insecurities and basic human flaws。 No one is perfect, even a Jedi Master。 His books are all in-depth without being dry, creative without losing focus, and draw on the principles of basic humanity without becoming preachy or corny。 Well done, again! 。。。more

Outstanding conclusion。 It retcons some of the really trashy aspects of the EU and also manages to tie together a lot of plot threads, has some interested character development for many heroes and villains and has many plot twists。 There are many chilling moments throughout this book, and there are many great references, call-backs and tie-ins to previous legends media (mainly the New Rebellion and anything by Michael Stackpole)。 Love it。 10/10 Conclusion to the bantam era of legends。

Stellar conclusion to a fine duology。 Nice to see Pellaeon get some more focus。 In many ways, Zahn’s novels are a more preferrable series of narratives than the films。 This book is the kind of political intrigue that makes for fine reading。 Sabotage and standoffs, none of this senatorial bickering。 Well, maybe a little, but it’s not about trade agreements, but rather the horrors of war and reparations。 Kissing unconscious people is a pretty big no-no, but flaws beyond that are minimal!

I have two big comments to make on this book。1。 It's ridiculously long。 Literally twice as long as the first book in this duology, and with the way Star Wars books run on trilogy, I don't understand why that decision was made。 It should have been split or had extensive cuts。 There were a LOT of parts that were not necessarily to the story。 I'll even volunteer some of my favorites: the bit with the evil front pet shop owners that brought Wedge and Corran into the story。 I loved these, because the I have two big comments to make on this book。1。 It's ridiculously long。 Literally twice as long as the first book in this duology, and with the way Star Wars books run on trilogy, I don't understand why that decision was made。 It should have been split or had extensive cuts。 There were a LOT of parts that were not necessarily to the story。 I'll even volunteer some of my favorites: the bit with the evil front pet shop owners that brought Wedge and Corran into the story。 I loved these, because the X-wing characters will always be my favorites, and I love to see them, but this plotline didn't need to exist。 Especially with the way it just。。。ended abruptly。2。 Luke and Mara's relationship。 To go as spoiler-free as possible, I know how this book was going to end for them, but it really came out of the blue。 Neither this series nor anything leading up to it laid the groundwork to for that to not feel like it came *completely* out of the blue。 。。。more

Unfortunately this book was disappointing。 I do not know if it was too long or if it was too detailed。 There were many subplots that I really liked。 The Fringe lady (from Kardde's team) vs Imperial Intelligence was good。 The appearance of Thrawn and everything linked to him was good too。 But as much as I love Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade the cave scene with the flying creatures was boring。 I felt it was too drawn out。 Unfortunately this book was disappointing。 I do not know if it was too long or if it was too detailed。 There were many subplots that I really liked。 The Fringe lady (from Kardde's team) vs Imperial Intelligence was good。 The appearance of Thrawn and everything linked to him was good too。 But as much as I love Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade the cave scene with the flying creatures was boring。 I felt it was too drawn out。 。。。more

This one got kinda long and a bit too much about the details, as opposed to being about the overall theme or the politics, for my taste。 Mara and Luke's journey through the caves and all that was going on on Bothawui, particularly, were a strain to read sometimes。 Also Luke and Mara's developed relationship in the end just felt。。。 off? I loved this book。 The way it finished was everything I could have hoped for。 Tension, action, lightsabers, starfighters, ground battles。 Everything。 A race for the truth as the suspense skyrockets。 This book was an amazing finish to the Hand of Thrawn series。 One small comment。 This book made me feel like there is nothing left。 Nothing more to deal with。 It made me feel like there is peace at the end of the story。 But, there were some discreet messages about unknown threats in the Unknown Regio I loved this book。 The way it finished was everything I could have hoped for。 Tension, action, lightsabers, starfighters, ground battles。 Everything。 A race for the truth as the suspense skyrockets。 This book was an amazing finish to the Hand of Thrawn series。 One small comment。 This book made me feel like there is nothing left。 Nothing more to deal with。 It made me feel like there is peace at the end of the story。 But, there were some discreet messages about unknown threats in the Unknown Regions, so I could be wrong。 All in all, one of my favorite Timothy Zahn books。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this once it opened up, or rather I did。 Lots of characters and details beyond my imagination。 Since I’ve primarily watched the theatrical releases, this really fills in gaps and creates backstory as to what is happening。 I hope you enjoy it as I did。 Anxiously awaiting the TV release of Thrawn!!

Another solid installment by Zahn into the Star Wsrs Franchise。 It is fun to see new and different levels to the characters that I first fell in love with as a youth。Plus, Thrawn himself is a character on level with the Star Wars greats。

Fantastic conclusion to the Duology。 Specter of the Past was a bit of a drag, but in hindsight I might of been too harsh on it。 Specter truly sets up a great piece in the Star Wars Saga; Vision of the Future。 Intrigue and Action this novel delivers with a very satisfying conclusion。 Overall quite enjoyed!

This review encompasses both books; I consider the first one incomplete without this, so they are now one (in my mind)。 This did have the added bonus of being listened to: audiobook-style。 Moreover, it was narrated by Marc Thompson。 That voice plus the special effects take Star Wars stories to the next level。 The way different species have different accents/squeaks/squawks is priceless。 For the story itself, it was rather good。 As part of a duology that spans over 30hrs, you can imagine there is This review encompasses both books; I consider the first one incomplete without this, so they are now one (in my mind)。 This did have the added bonus of being listened to: audiobook-style。 Moreover, it was narrated by Marc Thompson。 That voice plus the special effects take Star Wars stories to the next level。 The way different species have different accents/squeaks/squawks is priceless。 For the story itself, it was rather good。 As part of a duology that spans over 30hrs, you can imagine there is quite a bit of exposition。 The whole Bothan crisis is a through line of both books。 While it does, of course, play a major role in the eventual climax, there is a lot of upfront investment。 Don't get me wrong, it was a disturbingly (given our current civil unrest) realistic means of division。 Maybe that is why I felt it dragged a bit - I experience this rhetoric causing mass divides daily, so I don't need it explained quite as much。 The faux-Thrawn plot was rather fun。 I enjoyed that take; a way to "revive" a fallen villain without cheating death。 Extra props to Marc Thompson: every time I am picturing Thrawn talking and he slips back to his 'regular' conman voice I can't help but chuckle。 Speaking of Marc Thompson and making me laugh, Car'das reminds me of Megamind's "Space Dad" character。 I very much enjoyed the character's interactions。 Mara and Luke's adventure with other species, exploring the force (and maybe each other's bodies), etc。 Nothing says romance like your own impending death。。 Lando with anyone, but especially his scenes with Han。 Same (vice versa?) with Han。 I do gotta say sidelining the kids and Chewie for both books was brutal。 I kept thinking they were awaiting their deus ex machina moment to show up and save the day。 I need as much Chewie as possible; don't take that from me!。。 Talon Karde and Shada, both badasses in their own rights, made for a good team。 Do not fuck with the Mistryl's。 There was a good 'twist,' and I do love one of those。 Didn't see it coming, at all。 Didn't even suspect there would need to be a twist。 Maybe that's what makes a good one? I wish I would've wrote this right after I finished these, but things happen。 I don't remember it all, but I did enjoy it thoroughly。 If you have time for both novels, have at it! 。。。more

I enjoyed this book a lot more then the first。 I has some great battle sequences and some great scenes with Luke and Mara which was a welcome addition to the story。 Zahn seems to have a knack for really delivering on his endings, so much in fact that your forgive the sluggish middles that his books commonly have。 Overall it’s another great Star Wars story from Zahn!

3。5/5。Compared to Specter of the Past, where very little happens, a lot gets crammed into Vision of the Future。 There's a ton of travelling, information blackouts, and precise timing to achieve the few set pieces -- over Bothawui, at Yaga Minor and Bastion。 Luke and Mara's story are off to the side, and it was the storyline I was most looking forward to。 But now, knowing those two are endgame, seeing their relationship develop in one book (would be over 5 if this directly followed the Thrawn tri 3。5/5。Compared to Specter of the Past, where very little happens, a lot gets crammed into Vision of the Future。 There's a ton of travelling, information blackouts, and precise timing to achieve the few set pieces -- over Bothawui, at Yaga Minor and Bastion。 Luke and Mara's story are off to the side, and it was the storyline I was most looking forward to。 But now, knowing those two are endgame, seeing their relationship develop in one book (would be over 5 if this directly followed the Thrawn trilogy, or if the authors in the Zahn sandwich had a consistent characterization of Luke and Mara) feels a bit sudden and uninspiring -- not as bad Anakin and Padme though。 Having Luke blame his mistakes all on Byss feels a bit Doylist -- is that Zahn's critique of every work since his original trilogy not living up to those characters? I wouldn't disagree with him there; the natural time for Luke and Mara was probably soon after The Last Command, and the Gaeriel/Callista/Lando subplots all were uninteresting。 In many ways, this duology was like TFA -- broadly following the strokes of the more successful original trilogy, which means not much originality but does give us some sweet moments like the identical endings, which could almost convince me that all of this had been planned back when Zahn wrote The Last Command。The most interesting parts of this book were the implications of something greater -- the Empire of the Hand's invisible enemies left a lot to the imagination, which would be suitably filled by the Yuuzhan Vong, and the Aing-Tii Monks were 'casual worldbuilding' that helped bring back the mystery and universality of the force。 。。。more
