Summary

A raw and tenderly funny look at the human-cat relationship, from one of our most treasured and transgressive writers。

“The cat is the beautiful devil。”

Felines touched a vulnerable spot in Charles Bukowski’s crusty soul。 For the writer, there was something majestic and elemental about these inscrutable creatures he admired, sentient beings whose searing gaze could penetrate deep into our being。 Bukowski considered cats to be unique forces of nature, elusive emissaries of beauty and love。

On Cats offers Bukowski’s musings on these beloved animals and their toughness and resiliency。 He honors them as fighters, hunters, survivors who command awe and respect as they grip tightly onto the world around them: “A cat is only ITSELF, representative of the strong forces of life that won’t let go。”

Funny, moving, tough, and caring, On Cats brings together the acclaimed writer’s reflections on these animals he so admired。 Bukowski’s cats are fierce and demanding—he captures them stalking their prey; crawling across his typewritten pages; waking him up with claws across the face。 But they are also affectionate and giving, sources of inspiration and gentle, insistent care。

Poignant yet free of treacle, On Cats is an illuminating portrait of this one-of-a-kind artist and his unique view of the world, witnessed through his relationship with the animals he considered his most profound teachers。

i’ve been in a reading slump for the past 2 months。 i’ve been looking for something short to pull me out of it and boy was this the perfect filler read。 lighthearted, crude, humorous, depressing, grotesque- what doesn’t this short collection have? if you’re looking for something to cure your reading slump, On Cats by Charles Bukowski is your medicine。

Obviously my love for cats and for Buke could not make me more biased, but this book was everything。Cats are life, and Bukoswki just loved them so much, it makes my heart ache。The pictures in this book are amazing, and I'm sure they all had a weirdly great life with Buke, just as he with them。Maybe one day I'll have just as many cats as he did。 Obviously my love for cats and for Buke could not make me more biased, but this book was everything。Cats are life, and Bukoswki just loved them so much, it makes my heart ache。The pictures in this book are amazing, and I'm sure they all had a weirdly great life with Buke, just as he with them。Maybe one day I'll have just as many cats as he did。 。。。more

People who love cats always write about them and you can feel their love。 I know Bukowski was quite misogynistic and a drunk but loving animals shows that there is some goodness in you。"I walked up the driveway。 The cats were sprawled about, pooped。 In my next life I want to be a cat。 To sleep 20 hours a day and wait to be fed。 To sit around licking my ass。 Humans are too miserable and angry and single-minded。 "Also, 9 cats! Just an amazing collection of poems about cats。 Some were funny, some were sad, but always engaging。 Bukowski is a master。

Not my favorite book I have read by Bukowski, but a worthwhile read for sure。 It gave me even more of an insight into his life and personality and also made me appreciate cats and want a cat myself。

As always, I love Charles Bukowski's poems, the way, all of a sudden, a sentence blows me away。 As always, I didn't love all the poems, and here, there were some repetitions, some poems about the same topic put in the same section in a row。 I was interested in this collection because of the subject: what can Charles Bukowski say about cats? Some poems felt true to my experience of being around them; some were off for my taste。 But it's always a pleasure to read this author, and I'll keep doing i As always, I love Charles Bukowski's poems, the way, all of a sudden, a sentence blows me away。 As always, I didn't love all the poems, and here, there were some repetitions, some poems about the same topic put in the same section in a row。 I was interested in this collection because of the subject: what can Charles Bukowski say about cats? This was great! I’m sure you won’t enjoy it if you’re not a huge fan of cats but I personally love cats, have always had one growing up and have two of my own now。 Bukowski’s view on cats being able to improve your mood is spot on, for me anyway。 They fill my heart。 I love my animals more than people that’s for sure。 There were some duplications between his poems which will happen when a collection is made。 I’ve also read a few previously in other collections。 Perfect Sunday read snuggled up wit This was great!

I didn't really get the author's point in most of the selections from this book。 But then, I'm not really a poetry person。 I just borrowed this collection on a whim when I saw it at my local public library because I like cats, and short books。The book did feature a few really good lines though。 I didn't really get the author's point in most of the selections from this book。 But then, I'm not really a poetry person。 I just borrowed this collection on a whim when I saw it at my local public library because I like cats, and short books。The book did feature a few really good lines though。 。。。more

I loved this collection of poems and snippets of memoir from Bukowski。 I have learned he and I share the same position on cats。 This is excellent。 However, he can express his emotions and thoughts on them far better than I can。 At one point he had 10 cats, all strays。 One he thought was a Manx, but it turned out he had just been abused and someone had chopped his tail off (and shot him)。 Bukowski nursed him back to health - only for him to be run over and told he would never walk again。 Bukowski I loved this collection of poems and snippets of memoir from Bukowski。 I have learned he and I share the same position on cats。 This is excellent。 However, he can express his emotions and thoughts on them far better than I can。 At one point he had 10 cats, all strays。 One he thought was a Manx, but it turned out he had just been abused and someone had chopped his tail off (and shot him)。 Bukowski nursed him back to health - only for him to be run over and told he would never walk again。 Bukowski, however, did not give up。 Nor did the cat, bless him。This is actually the first thing I've read of Bukowski's and it has pushed me to read more of his poetry。 It is honest, clear and does not pull any punches。 Right up my alley。 。。。more
