Lots of good information on pregnancy, birth & postpartum。 Very emotion-centered and acknowledged but also science-based information。

For readers who want unbiased view of pregnancy and labor, this book is for you。 It presents the goings on of your pregnancy and the tests you will go through without judgement。 It also presents the interventions possible during labor and delivery the same way。 There are not statistics just the options and what they are。 The reader is left to decide for themselves。

Published in 2012, so I'm hoping there's not that much new in the world of pregnancy since then。 I'll check around。 Fairly even on the whole natural/assisted birth question, so that was appreciated。 There were a decent amount of times that I turned to Ethan and said, "Did you know。。。?"In general, a great guide to pregnancy that's well organized。 Easy to find what you're looking for。 I skimmed the weeks I'm already past, read what's up ahead, read all about birth and other relevant topics, and th Published in 2012, so I'm hoping there's not that much new in the world of pregnancy since then。 I'll check around。 Fairly even on the whole natural/assisted birth question, so that was appreciated。 There were a decent amount of times that I turned to Ethan and said, "Did you know。。。?"In general, a great guide to pregnancy that's well organized。 Easy to find what you're looking for。 I skimmed the weeks I'm already past, read what's up ahead, read all about birth and other relevant topics, and then skimmed the back third about possible problems。 Handily, that part was alphabetized。 The biggest takeaway is that while I was looking for clearer distinctions between the stages of birth, they really vary woman to woman。 Pretty much everything said, "oh but this can happen anywhere from hours before labor, to days, to minutes。" Boo。The "pain management" section was good。 Beyond drugs, breathing smartly, not freaking out, and moving around, you pretty much just have to roll with the punches。Fun stuff。 Here's a part that made me mad:"Do you plan to feed your baby with breast milk or formula? Some women know the answer to this question right away; others struggle。 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆, 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱。 But sometimes breast-feeding isn't possible。 Feeding your baby formula instead of breast milk shouldn't lead to guilt。 Feeling guilty isn't good for you or your baby。" Okay buckos。 Two things。1)。 Show me the science, buddy。 Why is "breast milk clearly best?" Show me the science。 From what I've read, this is a whole lot of nonsense。 All that studies can claim is breast milk is 'marginally' better。 It is not 𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩。 2)。 If what you're saying is true, how could a mom not feel guilt if she's not giving her child the best? Bad move, Mayo Clinic。 Way to be a jerk。Anyways, enough of that for now。 。。。more

Super informative, unemotional, nonjudgmental。 Gives pros and cons to both sides of a lot of questions/decisions like pain management。 Good section on newborn and postpartum care too。 Just tons of helpful, evidence-based info all around。

Anne Harmon

Clear, concise explanations of various options。

Shirly

Very informative, if sometimes exhaustive。 Some of the chapters at the very end of the book should have been integrated into the month to month, in my opinion。

100x better than googling every symptom。 Go to guide for a traditional medical resource on pregnancy。

Prachi

Very informative, with enough information to prepare, not too much detail to drown in。

I haven't read this cover-to-cover, I've just been perusing all year。 It's been a great go-to for my pregnancy related questions。 Everything is factual, matter-of-fact, and concise, which I love! It's also non-judgmental, which is shockingly hard to find in the prenatal education world。 I really recommend it as a pregnancy resource to own and pick up as needed。 I haven't read this cover-to-cover, I've just been perusing all year。 It's been a great go-to for my pregnancy related questions。 Everything is factual, matter-of-fact, and concise, which I love! This was my go-to book during pregnancy。 It was straight forward, unbiased and informative, and easy reading。 This is the one I would recommend and will recommend to anyone looking for reading with their first (or even subsequent) pregnancies。

Weirdly pushy about "breast is best", when everyone should know by now that fed is best! Otherwise a very useful book to have, I feel like it was more scientific than What to Expect and more comprehensive than books like Expecting Better (which I loved! I've been reading this as I progress in my pregnancy and have pretty much finished it up at this point as I try to wrap up preparations for baby to arrive。 I found it very readable and straightforward。 It's more of a broad overview that helps you be aware of what you might want to do more research on or ask your doctor about。 I appreciated that it included a fair amount of info about postpartum health for mom。 My only critique is that the organization is kind of wacky, with a lot of pre-pregnanc I've been reading this as I progress in my pregnancy and have pretty much finished it up at this point as I try to wrap up preparations for baby to arrive。 I found it very readable and straightforward。 It's more of a broad overview that helps you be aware of what you might want to do more research on or ask your doctor about。 I appreciated that it included a fair amount of info about postpartum health for mom。 My only critique is that the organization is kind of wacky, with a lot of pre-pregnancy and prenatal testing info in the back。 For this reason, I'd recommend reviewing the table of contents before you start so you can bounce around to relevant chapters rather than going front-to-back。 。。。more

Mayo Clinic: Guide to a Healthy PregnancyI am the kind of person who knew little about human biology from school。 Or at least I forgot most of what I learned。 So as an adult when I became pregnant I knew that the best way for me to lead this journey is through understanding very well what is happening inside my body。 And to know, a person must read。 So, I followed my sister’s recommendation and bought this particular book。 The book is written by doctors and pregnancy experts at Mayo Clinic。 What Mayo Clinic: Guide to a Healthy PregnancyI am the kind of person who knew little about human biology from school。 Or at least I forgot most of what I learned。 So as an adult when I became pregnant I knew that the best way for me to lead this journey is through understanding very well what is happening inside my body。 And to know, a person must read。 So, I followed my sister’s recommendation and bought this particular book。 The book is written by doctors and pregnancy experts at Mayo Clinic。 What it offers is scientific information about what happens to both the mother and the baby throughout the pregnancy。 But the information is written in plain English so it is easy for people ‘like me’ to understand。 And it also has illustrative figures of how the baby grows inside the womb。 It also has monthly exercises suggested which are appropriated to that particular phase of pregnancy。 The book is divided into 6 parts。 The first part is “Enjoying a Healthy Pregnancy”。 In this part, you get to know about how to get pregnant, and then how to maintain a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, whether through eating or exercise。 It also has a chapter dedicated to dads and partners to get them more involved with the process of pregnancy and what duties they can have especially during the first trimester which usually is the hardest。 Part two is “Pregnancy Month by Month”。 In this section, there will be information about the baby’s growth and changes to the mother’s body month by month and week by week。 And for each month they also discuss an emotional aspect of the pregnancy for example dealing with anticipation and worries, dealing with body image and handling anxiety。 This section ends with detailed information about the labor and delivery of the baby both vaginal birth or cesarean birth。 Part three is “Baby Is Finally Here” which contains a lot of useful tips and information, especially for first-time parents。 Starting with welcoming the newborns and caring for them。 Then taking the baby home and introducing them to their new home。 A chapter is dedicated to issues with mums post-delivery which again focuses on the physical and emotional aspects of postpartum。 And another chapter then includes both parents and how best to manage their transformation into parents and carers of their new baby。 Part four is “Important Decisions of Pregnancy” in this section important information are laid down to help parents make more informed decisions that relate to pregnancy, for example, genetic screening, the labor, for example, pain relief options or elective caesarean birth, caring for the baby for example breastfeeding and finally care for mother postpartum for example contraception。 The information is presented with no judgment based only on known scientific knowledge and is left to the parents to make the choices that they think is better for them。 Part 5 is “Symptoms Guide”。 This section is the one I kept coming back to as it has an alphabetical list of most common symptoms that pregnant women might encounter from bleeding gums to hip pain to stretch marks and so on。 It will give you an indication if what you are experiencing is normal, how to manage it and when to consult your healthcare provider。Part 6 is “Complications of Pregnancy and Childbirth”。 This section talks about the difficult sides of pregnancy whether physical like blood concerns, gestational diabetes, or placental problems or emotional like depression。 It also talks about problems that might occur during labor and how that can change the course of labor for example if the baby was in an abnormal position。 Then it talks about managing the mother’s health issues that were pre-existing or developed during pregnancy or after childbirth。 And finally, the section talks about the difficult issue of losing the baby in pregnancy and how to best deal with it physically and emotionally。 I read this book front to back the first time and in my second pregnancy, I knew the parts that I wanted to re-read。 I really recommend reading the book but also you should know that all the knowledge you gain through the book doesn’t mean you shouldn’t talk about any issue or concern you have with your health providers。 Depending on where you live, the type and style of health care during pregnancy varies。 In some countries, women don’t get to fully know what is happening inside of them and for those, in particular, I would urge them to read this book。 It is important to the woman bearing the child to understand her body and the process so as to make her journey a bit easier to go through。 There is a saying in Latin “scientia est potentia” which means knowledge is power。 And honestly, I can’t think of a better example than this where this phrase is applicable。 。。。more

Incredible book, provided all the facts I needed and in an order that made sense and followed the progression of pregnancy。 This guide starts out with a concise week-by-week walk through of what to expect over a 40 week pregnancy so you have a solid foundation to build upon。 The rest of the book explores other topics more in depth in a way that makes sense chronologically。 It's easy to follow and explains topics in a way that is easy to understand。There is no fluff here, mostly facts。 I chose th Incredible book, provided all the facts I needed and in an order that made sense and followed the progression of pregnancy。 This guide starts out with a concise week-by-week walk through of what to expect over a 40 week pregnancy so you have a solid foundation to build upon。 The rest of the book explores other topics more in depth in a way that makes sense chronologically。 It's easy to follow and explains topics in a way that is easy to understand。There is no fluff here, mostly facts。 I chose this book after carefully researching several options, and I'm happy I went this way。 My primary concern was to get facts from a medical expert that has experience in the field。 If you are interested in a more entertaining account of pregnancy with fun facts and stories I recommend also reading "Do Chocolate Lovers Have Sweeter Babies?: The Surprising Science of Pregnancy" by Jena Pincott。 These two books compliment each other very nicely while presenting consistent information。 Pincott's book is insightful and wonderful, but I suspect it is not enough by itself to adequately prepare expecting parents。 I had no interest in "what to expect etc etc" because it seemed very cliche and typical。 In case it matters, this is the dad perspective。 Proof of the books effectiveness? When discussing pre-natal genetic screening test with our doctor I was able to share my informed perspective competently enough that our doctor asked if I was a student :) First proud dad moment! 。。。more

I haven't read every chapter, but this has been a great reference book to have。 Stop reading biased or uninformative webpages designed for ad revenue, or heaven forbid, forums full of unqualified yet self-titled experts。 This book covers almost every pregnancy subject in a precise and unbiased way, yet still with a friendly tone。 There are chapters for each month of baby's development as well as an exercise/stretch to try that month。 There are chapters for all the pregnancy complications, labor I haven't read every chapter, but this has been a great reference book to have。 Stop reading biased or uninformative webpages designed for ad revenue, or heaven forbid, forums full of unqualified yet self-titled experts。 This book covers almost every pregnancy subject in a precise and unbiased way, yet still with a friendly tone。 There are chapters for each month of baby's development as well as an exercise/stretch to try that month。 There are chapters for all the pregnancy complications, labor complication, and for breastfeeding。 There are symptom charts and tables of safe meds。 There are recommendations for how to prepare for the transition each month - from staying healthy to choosing childcare。A great resource book to have on hand。 。。。more

Quick read; less dense than What to Expect When You’re Expecting。 Good to read if you don’t have enough time to read Heidi Murkoff’s book or you prefer something less technical。

Courtney

Excellent information that does not push the reader towards one thing or another。 Allows the parent to make decisions based on given information。 Great read to prepare me for my first baby。

Bimpe Abimbola

Highly recommend for first-time pregnant moms。 It covers a wide range of topics in depth and breadth and provides great insights on what to expect during and after the pregnancy journey。

I really enjoyed this book。 It is very informative and well written。 It answers all your questions from trimester 1 symptoms all the way up to breastfeeding and caring for the baby。 Definitely recommend it to new mothers。

Brittany Routledge

This book was super informative。 I definitely recommend to mothers and individuals planning to have children。

This is the best overall book for science-backed and even-handed advice about what to expect from pregnancy。 As another reviewer mentioned, it's very clinical and basically value-judgement-free which is a relief in a space over-crowded with books with opinionated and often unsubstantiated takes。 If you only read one book about pregnancy, this would be an excellent choice。 (And certainly much better than the panic-inducing, paternalistic tone of What to Expect!) Straightforward, comprehensive, medical and evidence-based overview of pregnancy, labor & delivery, and postpartum issues。 This is a reference book, so it reads sort of like an 8th grade textbook。 Which is fine-- it should be easy to navigate and understand-- but it's not an especially engaging book to just sit down and read。 But if you need a basic reference guide for what to expect from pregnancy, a book like this seems essential。 Straightforward, comprehensive, medical and evidence-based overview of pregnancy, labor & delivery, and postpartum issues。 This is a reference book, so it reads sort of like an 8th grade textbook。 Which is fine-- it should be easy to navigate and understand-- but it's not an especially engaging book to just sit down and read。 But if you need a basic reference guide for what to expect from pregnancy, a book like this seems essential。 。。。more
