Summary

2 March 1810。。。 Today, I fell in love。

At the age of ten, Miranda Cheever showed no signs of Great Beauty。 And even at ten, Miranda learned to accept the expectations society held for her—until the afternoon when Nigel Bevelstoke, the handsome and dashing Viscount Turner, solemnly kissed her hand and promised her that one day she would grow into herself, that one day she would be as beautiful as she already was smart。 And even at ten, Miranda knew she would love him forever。

But the years that followed were as cruel to Turner as they were kind to Miranda。 She is as intriguing as the viscount boldly predicted on that memorable day—while he is a lonely, bitter man, crushed by a devastating loss。 But Miranda has never forgotten the truth she set down on paper all those years earlier—and she will not allow the love that is her destiny to slip lightly through her fingers。。。

I really enjoyed this one! A friend recommended it because they mentioned the hero gave off Mr。 Rochester vibes and I immediately wasn’t interested。 I can totally see why a lot of people are not a fan of this book because of the hero, but he was a kind of hero that works for me and I really enjoyed this read。 I’ve read 2 other JQ series before this and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I adored this book。 Miranda falls in love with her best friend’s older brother, Turner, when she is just I really enjoyed this one! Entertaining chick lit read for those days when you are looking for a light read。

Julia Quinn has really been letting me down since I finished the Bridgerton series。 While I liked the beginning of this book, the last half absolutely drove me up a wall。 There have been a few male characters that I wasn't too fond of in a couple of her books, but Turner had to be one of the worst。 I couldn't stand his behavior towards anybody。 He is patronizing, condescending, and downright bullying to Miranda and then he gets physical with all the women who anger him, including his mother。 Rea Julia Quinn has really been letting me down since I finished the Bridgerton series。 While I liked the beginning of this book, the last half absolutely drove me up a wall。 There have been a few male characters that I wasn't too fond of in a couple of her books, but Turner had to be one of the worst。 I couldn't stand his behavior towards anybody。 He is patronizing, condescending, and downright bullying to Miranda and then he gets physical with all the women who anger him, including his mother。 Really?! I don't care what kind of sob story he has, there is no excuse for the things that he does, and this guy is so far from swoon worthy it's not even funny。 Hopefully the next one is better。 。。。more

Blech。 Hate this popular culture making celebrities out of less than mediocre work。

I'm a new reader of Julia Quinn and have been enjoying all her books to varying degrees until this one。 I didn't like either the hero or the heroine and the only plot stemmed from their relationship which seemed uncomfortably close to a grown man and a girl-child, because Miranda seems so young and odd。 It doesn't help that Turner says to her "You little fool" multiple times and tells her to shut her mouth。 I think the author was trying for a Jane Eyre scenario with the plain heroine and the bro I'm a new reader of Julia Quinn and have been enjoying all her books to varying degrees until this one。 I didn't like either the hero or the heroine and the only plot stemmed from their relationship which seemed uncomfortably close to a grown man and a girl-child, because Miranda seems so young and odd。 It doesn't help that Turner says to her "You little fool" multiple times and tells her to shut her mouth。 I think the author was trying for a Jane Eyre scenario with the plain heroine and the brooding flawed older man hero。 Throw in graphic sex and a lopsided power dynamics in the relationship and I am not a fan。 Also, Miranda's obsessive insistence that Turner say "I love you" when he is doing everything showing he loves her, I think is strange and immature。 Plenty facile people will have "I love you" roll off the tongue, but don't put deeds to the words。I finished it only because it was an audio book, and even then missed a section where Turner even treated Miranda more dastardly。 Possibly my dislike was also due to a different narrator than usual。 It just seemed a dark story without Quinn's usual humor。 。。。more

This was really funny and quite adorable, but parts of this were just a bit too long or drawn out。 I loved Miranda and Olivia’s friendship, and I ended up really liking Turner。

While I enjoyed reading this book, I felt that Turner was a toxic character, constantly trying to manipulate Miranda to his needs at the time。 I also felt that Miranda relied on Turner too much to be happy, almost as if she couldn't be her own person without him。 I did enjoy the storyline of girl being in love with her best friends brother, and that Julia Quinn included their life after getting married in the book, which she does not do often。 While I enjoyed reading this book, I felt that Turner was a toxic character, constantly trying to manipulate Miranda to his needs at the time。 I also felt that Miranda relied on Turner too much to be happy, almost as if she couldn't be her own person without him。 I did enjoy the storyline of girl being in love with her best friends brother, and that Julia Quinn included their life after getting married in the book, which she does not do often。 。。。more

We start out with a drunken assault and it gets worse。 Really don’t know why Julia Quinn was so determined to make sure readers know from the start that Turner is super not into women’s rights, but that combined with what a dick he is more generally made this really unsatisfying。

I LOVED this story for soooooo many reasons。 The most compelling for me was because this story felt REAL。 There were real, raw emotions of heartache, loss, betrayal, passion, anger, and unrequited love。 This story is one of JQ's best in my opinion。 I liked that it was a darker, more melancholy storyline。 While based on many not-so-good reviews, many readers often think that Miranda is a doormat。 I actually didn't see her that way at all。 I thought she was incredibly BRAVE and unapologetic。 She l I LOVED this story for soooooo many reasons。 The most compelling for me was because this story felt REAL。 There were real, raw emotions of heartache, loss, betrayal, passion, anger, and unrequited love。 This story is one of JQ's best in my opinion。 I liked that it was a darker, more melancholy storyline。 While based on many not-so-good reviews, many readers often think that Miranda is a doormat。 I actually didn't see her that way at all。 I thought she was incredibly BRAVE and unapologetic。 She loved passionately and hard and true。 She bared her soul to the man she worshipped for ten years and never apologized for it once。 I enjoyed her character and found myself rooting for her, especially during the scenes when she's sticking up for herself (whether with the misogynistic bookstore owner or with Turner。)That now brings me to Turner。 While he's an utter ass for a good portion of the book, I've always been someone who realizes that someone's behavior stems from somewhere。 Not trying to make excuses for him or how he treated Miranda, but it's obvious that he was still reeling from one of the worst kinds of betrayal imaginable。 He's very much blinded by his anger and heartache and is terrified of being hurt again。 Because of this, I found him to be a complex and incredibly captivating character。 And, you see him slowly begin to change, much of this purely because of unwillingness to give up on him。 All in all, it was a very compelling story and I enjoyed it so much I couldn't put it down。 I finished it in two days。 I do recommend this to anyone who's looking for an attention-grabbing, tear-jerking read full of passion。 The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever 。。。more

2。5 again。 This is tough since I love Julia Quinn, and clearly finished this in only a day, but it is one of my less favorite of her books so far。 I think that ultimately it has to do with my preference for likeable love interests。 Nigel Bevelstoke (Turner) doesn't have a lot of likable characteristics - it's almost hard to see what Miranda sees in him - other than holding on to a childhood crush。This didn't of course stop me from consuming the books and racing to the finish to find out how it e 2。5 again。 This is tough since I love Julia Quinn, and clearly finished this in only a day, but it is one of my less favorite of her books so far。 I think that ultimately it has to do with my preference for likeable love interests。 Nigel Bevelstoke (Turner) doesn't have a lot of likable characteristics - it's almost hard to see what Miranda sees in him - other than holding on to a childhood crush。This didn't of course stop me from consuming the books and racing to the finish to find out how it ended。 。。。more

Because that feels sort of icky。 I finished this book because I hoped for a good grovel, but it didn't live up to it。 He tells her he realized he loves her when he realized he'd love their baby because it was part of her。。。but he kind of said the exact same thing 50 pages earlier。 So it didn't really feel like a revelation。 I also have issues with his love to her being tied to her ability to have children。 Like, if she hadn't been able to get pregnant again, would he have never realized it? Turner is one of the most problematic historical romance heroes ever。 Forces a kiss on the heroine, demeans her constantly, sleeps with her, then disappears for seven weeks。 Oh, and then forces her to marry him。 It made me so angry。
