Summary

A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut。

In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet’s word is law, Immanuelle Moore’s very existence is blasphemy。 Her mother’s union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement。

But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches。 Their spirits are still lurking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the journal of her dead mother, who Immanuelle is shocked to learn once sought sanctuary in the wood。

Fascinated by the secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches。 But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realizes the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness。 And she starts to understand that if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her。

All of that and still a fuckin patriarchy? All of that and still a fuckin patriarchy? The “Father” still gets to be the “good” god, and she killed Lilith with just a slight nod of something along the lines of “in that moment I saw the great leader that she may have once been” or whatever? That was super disappointing。 It’s not like I needed this poor traumatized child of a main character to take on the responsibility of leading Bethel, and obviously we like Ezra as a potential leader, buuuut I liked him more as a potential leader when we were just hoping for his dad, the current prophet, to die so that he could take over naturally and make changes that way。 Having grown up in Bethel, even being a naturally ‘suspicious-of-the-way-things-are’ character, Ezra is still basically a half-assed feminist, which is semi forgivable due to the upbringing。 BUT after years of his father brainwashing women into normalizing polygamy and sexual abuse, you’d think they’d deserve a leader who perhaps wasn’t an intended result of said sexual abuse (and also, a teenager - I don’t remember his age being mentioned, but likely not an adult if Immanuelle is 17) 。 I didn’t even need a full-on “ta-da, now it’s a matriarchy” ending, but after all that wouldn’t you maybe think it’s about damn time for a woman to be in charge?Anyway。 Don’t get me wrong, I really did enjoy this book and would recommend it, I’m just frustrated with the ending。 Thanks for being witness to my rant。 :) 。。。more

I liked the characters! But the main gal did a TON of over explaining - well, the author wrote so much internal dialogue reiterating a million times how the main character felt and why she was doing whatever。 That really took away most of the surprises from the story。 I was a fan of Ezra- he was probably my favorite character。 The Book overall was quite graphic, which I enjoyed in this story。 Made it feel more freaky。 Definitely wouldn’t read this again, nor would I really recommend it to anyone I liked the characters! Probably the only book about witches I have thoroughly enjoyed— but maybe that’s because of my upbringing in the Mormon church。 Prophets, apostles, underage girls taken advantage of。 Do I have religious trauma? Absolutely。 Did this trigger me? A bit… but it really is about discovering the Gray between right and wrong。 I also live for a book in which the teen protagonist isn’t bloody stupid。

Mallory

Wow。 This was a lot, but I absolutely loved it。

Okay I started reading this last year and put it down at the last few chapters。 I was so immersed and felt in-tuned with the main character, I couldn't imagine her fate and wasn't ready to finish it。 Almost a year later (shamefully) I finished those last few chapters。 And it did not disappoint。 Henderson definitely wrote a better person than I would ever be。 All the pain the main character suffered I would not have made the virtuous decision she did。 There were times I burned with anger for her, Okay I started reading this last year and put it down at the last few chapters。 I was so immersed and felt in-tuned with the main character, I couldn't imagine her fate and wasn't ready to finish it。 Almost a year later (shamefully) I finished those last few chapters。 And it did not disappoint。 Henderson definitely wrote a better person than I would ever be。 All the pain the main character suffered I would not have made the virtuous decision she did。 There were times I burned with anger for her, and hurt for her in ways I don't usually do for fictional characters。 I am excited for this world that was built, I am excited for the next installment。 If you like magic and witches and empowered women。 This is a book for you。 。。。more

Okay, so I didn’t really feel like this book was horror, more like a thriller。 I do see where the horror aspects come in to play though。 I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 I loved how Immanuelle did whatever she could to save her people, even if some people didn’t deserve it。 I’m intrigued to see how her and Ezra’s relationship grows in the second book。

This was a great spooky season appetizer! I’m so glad I finally decided to read this one after almost a year of sitting in my TBR。 I love how this book leaned into the darker side of witchcraft lore and the clear messaging that came along with it。 I wanted this book to be longer! I felt like there was so much more to be explored。 I am looking forward to the sequel。

I won this ebook from Goodreads, and am not sure I would have chosen to read it otherwise。 I typically like to read most sci-fi, but this story is fantasy/horror, so not my favorite genre。 Still, the narrative quickly pulled me through, all the way to the end。 I do appreciate that not only is the main character a badass multi-racial female hero, and that she battles the male patriarchy, but that the villainous monsters she faces are female based characters。 This book was a welcome detour from wh I won this ebook from Goodreads, and am not sure I would have chosen to read it otherwise。 I typically like to read most sci-fi, but this story is fantasy/horror, so not my favorite genre。 Still, the narrative quickly pulled me through, all the way to the end。 I do appreciate that not only is the main character a badass multi-racial female hero, and that she battles the male patriarchy, but that the villainous monsters she faces are female based characters。 This book was a welcome detour from what I normally read。 。。。more

Atmospheric feminist horror。 I was intrigued by the story and build up, but the ending felt a little heavy-handed。 Some of the themes were clumsy in a way that YA can sometimes be。

At the edge of my seat!I thought the pace of this book was quick enough to keep my attention, but slow enough to develop each character so thoroughly that I actually cried over them。 I love that I actually got an eerie, witchy feeling the entire time I was reading! This book took me to another place and I was engulfed! I wish there was more! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading as an escape from reality and would love a dark gothic feeling with their escape!

Amazing deconstruction of the puritanical witchy stories told with only a white cast of characters。 Genuinely in awe of this book, read it。 I’ll add more thoughts later。

Couldn't find the main character compelling and the end felt really unresolved, though it wasn't a generic angry, witchy, coming-of-power story I expected (which is a good thing)。 I appreciate world-building in my books where there's some history and hidden power, but didn't get a lot of that here。 Taken as a start to a series, this may be 3 stars since it laid a decent foundation for a couple characters。 Couldn't find the main character compelling and the end felt really unresolved, though it wasn't a generic angry, witchy, coming-of-power story I expected (which is a good thing)。 I appreciate world-building in my books where there's some history and hidden power, but didn't get a lot of that here。 Taken as a start to a series, this may be 3 stars since it laid a decent foundation for a couple characters。 。。。more
