i heard someone say “this isn’t just a jack the ripper story” and that is the best put together sentence i’ve heard about this。 From hell is a work of art in every sense and an insanely intriguing story that comes together perfectly。 I’ve learned a lot from this book including true masonic beliefs and a greater understanding of how history is not what it appears to be from what we retain from actual events。 it opened my mind up about what we leave on earth and how one can become an “idea” or “in i heard someone say “this isn’t just a jack the ripper story” and that is the best put together sentence i’ve heard about this。 From hell is a work of art in every sense and an insanely intriguing story that comes together perfectly。 I’ve learned a lot from this book including true masonic beliefs and a greater understanding of how history is not what it appears to be from what we retain from actual events。 it opened my mind up about what we leave on earth and how one can become an “idea” or “influence” to society once they are gone。 this story was well researched and put together beautifully。 Alan moore is a top 5 novelist who does graphic novels。 the art fit the story perfectly, as it was done in sketches (from what i think is ballpoint pen)。 the eerie vibe of this book made me shiver and certain chapters were so impressionable。 strongly recommend (for mature and un-dogmatic minds)。 。。。more

I got this book accidentally。 I knew who Alan Moore was and I just started getting into graphic novels and this is was my second book and oh boy, what a ride it was。 Firstly i have to say that it's not everyone。 It was a difficult read at least for the first 35% of it。 I spent about 2 weeks crawling through the pages, and finished the other 65% in one sitting。 The pacing was everything, it ramped up pretty quickly and just goes into different levels as it reaches the end。 It's very well written I got this book accidentally。 I knew who Alan Moore was and I just started getting into graphic novels and this is was my second book and oh boy, what a ride it was。 Firstly i have to say that it's not everyone。 It was a difficult read at least for the first 35% of it。 I spent about 2 weeks crawling through the pages, and finished the other 65% in one sitting。 The pacing was everything, it ramped up pretty quickly and just goes into different levels as it reaches the end。 It's very well written with extensive research on historical agendas, culture, architecture, language and of course conspiracy theories。 It was horrifying, beautiful and it messes with your head for a bit。 I would recommend this to anyone who likes complex stories with loads of insanity。 It's a challenging read but it was worth it。 For me at least。 Definitely one of my favorite graphic literatures ever。 Vinoth MadivananMalaysia 。。。more

I went into this without much knowledge of Jack the Ripper, other than that he was a Victorian-era serial killer, and no one knew who he was。 Also, that Morrissey and Nick Cave had both written songs titled 'Jack the Ripper' - Morrissey's was excellent; Nick Cave's less so (though he and the Bad Seeds did a stonking live version in Auckland a few years ago。。。)。Anyhow, I now know rather more about the Ripper and his victims。 'From Hell' is largely based on a theory by a fellow named Stephen Knigh I went into this without much knowledge of Jack the Ripper, other than that he was a Victorian-era serial killer, and no one knew who he was。 Also, that Morrissey and Nick Cave had both written songs titled 'Jack the Ripper' - Morrissey's was excellent; Nick Cave's less so (though he and the Bad Seeds did a stonking live version in Auckland a few years ago。。。)。Anyhow, I now know rather more about the Ripper and his victims。 'From Hell' is largely based on a theory by a fellow named Stephen Knight, and, as theories go, it's rather bonkers。 If the tale stood on its own, I might perhaps have given it three stars - enjoyable, if long-winded in places (especially when things get esoteric), with the Ripper's victims appearing as real people trying to make the best of the bad situation that was Victorian London for working class women。It's the two appendices that raise the rating to four stars。 In the first appendix, Moore offers copious notes about almost every page, giving citations for where information was taken from, letting the reader know what is based on hard evidence, and what is a flight of fancy (and why it remains a plausible plot point)。 It's absolutely fascinating (though it's alarming just how much appears to have been written about Jack the Ripper。。。)。And just when one is beginning to think that Mr Moore actually believes Knight's hypothesis, there's appendix two, which provides a potted history of the Ripper literature through the ages。 And Moore tips the reader a knowing wink, essentially saying, "Yes, it's all rubbish, but haven't we all had fun!"Yes, Mr Moore, yes we did。 。。。more

I cannot possibly describe how incredibly boring this was。 I read this because it was highly recommended to me as a chilling horror。 Oh boy do I disagree。 I wanted to put the book down so many times I lost count。 Normally, I don't rate books 1 star, specially graphic novels because even if the writing was bad, at least the illustrations aren't and vice versa。 This is the first book where I can say they're both horrible。Writing: no recognizable personality to the characters, no logical sequence o I cannot possibly describe how incredibly boring this was。 I read this because it was highly recommended to me as a chilling horror。 Oh boy do I disagree。 I wanted to put the book down so many times I lost count。 Normally, I don't rate books 1 star, specially graphic novels because even if the writing was bad, at least the illustrations aren't and vice versa。 This is the first book where I can say they're both horrible。Writing: no recognizable personality to the characters, no logical sequence of events, random extracts from other books between chapters for no reason。Illustration: could not recognize which character was which, everything was so dark that the black and white was no longer an acceptable style choice, it was hard to distinguish what was happening, the hand writing sometimes was illegible。The thing that bothered me the most was that I could not tell the characters apart visually because most of the time I was confused about who had done what。 (Also, what's up with the limp penises that were like half a thigh long? And the weird body proportions? Can we talk about how all of the naked women had big boobs, hard nipples, no butts and for some reason their pubic hair was only on the mound and not their actual vulva? Like damn, female shaving wasn't even a thing back then, why wouldn't they have normal pubes? Am I over thinking illustrations of 19th century genitalia because the book is so bad that it was the only thing I found remotely entertaining in a graphic novel about one of the most infamous serial killers in history? Yes, I am。) 。。。more

Always Intense, Sometimes ConfusingI read this back when the graphic novel was published。 I like Jack the Ripper stuff, so I was interested。 There is now a color added ebook version, which is really nicely done。 There are a lot of layers in this book。 The artwork tends to be very raw, almost unfinished pen and ink that evokes the madness and lunacy of the story。 But then, unexpectedly, there are a few panels done in soft pastels that have a dreamlike quality。 We get a few info dumps, a geography Always Intense, Sometimes ConfusingI read this back when the graphic novel was published。 I like Jack the Ripper stuff, so I was interested。 There is now a color added ebook version, which is really nicely done。 There are a lot of layers in this book。 The artwork tends to be very raw, almost unfinished pen and ink that evokes the madness and lunacy of the story。 But then, unexpectedly, there are a few panels done in soft pastels that have a dreamlike quality。 We get a few info dumps, a geography and history of London, more about Freemasonry than they would probably like you to know, and some philosophical digressions。 Unlike most comics, there are extensive endnotes, and a further comic about the confusion that is Ripperology and Ripperologists。 Overall, its a good read。 I won't go so far as to call it enjoyable, as a lot of it is designed to put the reader in a state of discomfort。 But it is GOOD。 Damned good, for being From Hell。 。。。more

This is a tome of a book。 It is rough。 It is disturbing。 It is convoluted。 I hated the mad ramblings that the writer took me on and kind of disliked the art also…

Moore's graphic (in more ways than one) collection of the story of Jack the Ripper。 A massive 500+ page tome about Victorian England and the crimes of Whitechapel and who Moore thinks did the deed。 I didn't read the 50 pages of notes at the end, I was mentally exhausted after 500 pages and glad for it to be done, but nevertheless its a worthwhile read。 (I think that might be one of my biggest pet peeves of electronic reading。 I didn't know there were notes and there's no easy way to flip back a Moore's graphic (in more ways than one) collection of the story of Jack the Ripper。 A massive 500+ page tome about Victorian England and the crimes of Whitechapel and who Moore thinks did the deed。 I didn't read the 50 pages of notes at the end, I was mentally exhausted after 500 pages and glad for it to be done, but nevertheless its a worthwhile read。 (I think that might be one of my biggest pet peeves of electronic reading。 I didn't know there were notes and there's no easy way to flip back and forth to read them at the end of each chapter, oh well)。 。。。more

I bought this books after seeing lot of positive reviews but its a big disappointment for me。 Firstly, there is no suspense in this book as the author revealing the killer very beginning of the book。 It might be a good read for those who read the book when it was weekly/monthly series。 I don't like the scribbling artwork and the coloring also not that good。 Its a boring plot and no suspense。 I am going to sell this book out rather than keeping it in my shelf just for the sake。 I bought this books after seeing lot of positive reviews but its a big disappointment for me。 Firstly, there is no suspense in this book as the author revealing the killer very beginning of the book。 It might be a good read for those who read the book when it was weekly/monthly series。 I don't like the scribbling artwork and the coloring also not that good。 Its a boring plot and no suspense。 I am going to sell this book out rather than keeping it in my shelf just for the sake。 。。。more

Alan Moore at his most grim, unflinching, and terrifying。You can't help but be awed by his multitudinal interests。 The expertise with which he creates architectural, historical, and psychological whirlwinds through text is impressive and at times overwhelming。 It does feel as if one were there in Ripper's London。。。 the smells, the sounds, the danger。 Not an altogether pleasant experience。 A difficult read - for its subject matter, graphic illustrations, and simple expansiveness - but undeniably Alan Moore at his most grim, unflinching, and terrifying。You can't help but be awed by his multitudinal interests。 The expertise with which he creates architectural, historical, and psychological whirlwinds through text is impressive and at times overwhelming。 It does feel as if one were there in Ripper's London。。。 the smells, the sounds, the danger。 Not an altogether pleasant experience。 A difficult read - for its subject matter, graphic illustrations, and simple expansiveness - but undeniably compelling。 。。。more

Whoa。 Ugh。 Yikes。 Did I think this was good? Yes。 Did I liked it? No。 The art was fantastic through-out。 The Pseudo-history absolutely convincing。 This was one of the few books I read with two bookmarks - one for the text and the other for the annotations。 And then the epilogue somewhat clears up how we got to this book - I almost think it should be read first。 I'm not a fan of murder stories or really all that much for mysteries。 And generally I find Jack the Ripper to be especially tiresome。 T Whoa。 Ugh。 Yikes。 Did I think this was good?

A 600 paged experience that cuts through other accounts like a Liston knife。Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell have given us a masterful, obsessively researched deconstructive retelling。 Both the violence and subject matter are explicit and graphic front row seating that’ll challenge some readers。 But this is not some lurid, rehashed Grand Guignol。 It’s a complex and multilayered societal examination as cold, grim and unflinching as the cobbles of Whitechapel。Queen Victoria, through connections with A 600 paged experience that cuts through other accounts like a Liston knife。Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell have given us a masterful, obsessively researched deconstructive retelling。 Both the violence and subject matter are explicit and graphic front row seating that’ll challenge some readers。 But this is not some lurid, rehashed Grand Guignol。 It’s a complex and multilayered societal examination as cold, grim and unflinching as the cobbles of Whitechapel。Queen Victoria, through connections with the Freemasons, employs Sir William Gull - a renowned Royal Surgeon and Psychopathic nutbag- to silence five women - Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly - who attempt to black mail the Royals with scandalous information。 Prince Albert Victor, second to the throne, has an illegitimate child with a prostitute he secretly married。There are more books and documentaries on Ripperology than both you and I have had hot meals。 And hardly any of them are worth our time。 Most are written by ghouls who get aroused rolling around in the gory pornographic details, while others are written by egocentrics who believe their amateur ratiocination skills could only be improved with a deerstalker cap and a Calabash pipe。 They put me off going near the subject for years, before I heard just how good FH was。The book provides an unvarnished account, but it’s not exploitative。 I thought the writing was dense and multi-layered, meaty complicated subject matter to ruminate on without it feeling convoluted or postured。 Also, the whole book oozes atmosphere。 It’s a heady brew of secret societies, cults, occults, psychogeography, the Dionysiac architects, dark philosophies, corruption, troubling histories and darker mysteries and, of course, serial murder horror。 It all provided a sense of dread I haven’t experienced with graphic novels before and the unconventional art suits the harsh subject matter perfectly。A truly excellent reading experience。 I can’t recommend it enough。 。。。more
