Summary

This remarkable collection of stories, first published in 1872, includes Green TeaThe FamiliarMr。 Justice HarbottleThe Room in le Dragon Volant, and Carmilla。 The five stories are purported to be cases by Dr。 Hesselius, a 'metaphysical' doctor, who is willing to consider the ghosts both as real and as hallucinatory obsessions。 The reader's doubtful anxiety mimics that of the protagonist, and each story thus creates that atmosphere of mystery which is the supernatural experience。 This new annotated edition includes an introduction, notes on the text, and explanatory notes。

Green Tea is genuinely sinister and then the final two pages are epic in their comedy value。The Familiar is so forgettable that even after reading others' synopses on here, I don't recall reading this story even though I know I did。Mr Justice Horbottle was so painfully slow that I caught myself looking up Miraculous Tweets without realising what I'd done, and having entirely forgotten that I was meant to be reading a book。 When I returned to the story, I decided the final few pages were brillian Green Tea is genuinely sinister and then the final two pages are epic in their comedy value。The Familiar is so forgettable that even after reading others' synopses on here, I don't recall reading this story even though I know I did。Mr Justice Horbottle was so painfully slow that I caught myself looking up Miraculous Tweets without realising what I'd done, and having entirely forgotten that I was meant to be reading a book。 When I returned to the story, I decided the final few pages were brilliant。。。but the very ending was disappointing。Dragon Volant was disappointing for the same reason: it is so boring to read all that enigma and fantasy, only to be told, in a bland voice, that all of it was actually less interesting than I imagined and here's the scientific explanation, the end。 That said, I did genuinely enjoy about 20 pages of the end of this unnecessarily long story。 The other 90 pages could have been condensed into 20, as well, and it all would have been so much better。Carmilla is stunning。 I've read this one twice, now, and it is one of the most sensual, tense stories。 If you feel like picking up this book, I really would recommend just reading this one and Green Tea。 。。。more

Such beautiful writing and I connected with every part of this, all the more powerful as it is only 32 pages long。The FamiliarFor one moment, the title startled me, thinking it could have a connection to MZD's unfinished series, but no need to worry there! Nevertheless, only 2 starts for this one for me。 It was so not like the first story。 Somewhere admirable to think that Le Fanu could write his characters in such a way it is almost impossible to connect and thus you must dislike the not so nice characters。 Also, it was too long yet gave a feeling it's still unfinished or maybe just a first draft。Mr。 Justice HarbottleIt got worse! Only 1 star。。。 The Judge。。。 the judge。。。 the judge。。。 I have an allergy to an excessive amount of the use of one name。 Also I didn't really get this one either。 It was a though read and had a lack of the beauty that Green Tea possessed。The Room in Le Dragon Volant4,5 stars。 This one may be called predictable, 'cause it is。 But that didn't bother me one bit。 I Enjoyed it thoroughly only once or twice did I feel the story was dragging on a bid and actually could have been shorter。 Thus, 0,5 deduction of a 5 star read。Carmilla5 stars though I must amid。 It was a rollercoaster ride and we have landed at the top。 For an awesome review I would recommend watching Better Than Food 。。。more

This is a collection of short stories that range from ghost stories to vampires, and even a mystery/thriller of sorts。 There were a good number of misprints, which detracted from the reading pleasure somewhat。 Still, it was enjoyable to peruse the pages。 I would recommend the book to those interested in dark fantasy, gothic horror, or even have a loose interest in ghosts and historical fiction。 The main thing I got out of this book was a lesson I learned long ago, but one that warrants occasiona This is a collection of short stories that range from ghost stories to vampires, and even a mystery/thriller of sorts。 There were a good number of misprints, which detracted from the reading pleasure somewhat。 Still, it was enjoyable to peruse the pages。 I would recommend the book to those interested in dark fantasy, gothic horror, or even have a loose interest in ghosts and historical fiction。 The main thing I got out of this book was a lesson I learned long ago, but one that warrants occasional reminding。 It is also a lesson my mother was adamant about telling me when I was younger, "if it seems to good to be true, then it probably is。" 。。。more

I downloaded most of the classics on the Standard Books website because they beautify the text/format of the Project Gutenberg offerings。 I picked this at random, not realizing it was a collection of short stories。 I was somewhat disappointed that the setup with Martin Hessselius didn't go anywhere。 The best were The Room in the Dragon Volant, Carmilla and Green Tea (the most disturbing one for me)。 I downloaded most of the classics on the Standard Books website because they beautify the text/format of the Project Gutenberg offerings。 I picked this at random, not realizing it was a collection of short stories。 I was somewhat disappointed that the setup with Martin Hessselius didn't go anywhere。 The best were The Room in the Dragon Volant, Carmilla and Green Tea (the most disturbing one for me)。 。。。more

The star rating is based solely on the stories, and I'd recommend reading them。But in a different edition。 Most every book has a handful of typos, even with the number of eyes that go over them, but the typos in this edition had to be in the hundreds。 New paragraphs would start mid-sentence, much of the time ! was changed to I, and occasionally the wrong word was put in, leaving you to guess what was meant。 I've read several Wordsworth Editions and never seen this problem before。 Hopefully this The star rating is based solely on the stories, and I'd recommend reading them。But in a different edition。 Most every book has a handful of typos, even with the number of eyes that go over them, but the typos in this edition had to be in the hundreds。 New paragraphs would start mid-sentence, much of the time ! was changed to I, and occasionally the wrong word was put in, leaving you to guess what was meant。 I've read several Wordsworth Editions and never seen this problem before。 Hopefully this was a one-off。 。。。more

A great collection of short stories and an excellent introduction to Le Fanu for the unfamiliar。 The stars of this collection for me were "Carmilla" and "Mr。 Justice Harbottle" - both of which were captivating reads。 The only story that I was less than impressed with was "The Room in Le Dragon Volant" which I felt was cluttered, poorly paced and to put it frankly quaint。 A great collection of short stories and an excellent introduction to Le Fanu for the unfamiliar。 The stars of this collection for me were "Carmilla" and "Mr。 Justice Harbottle" - both of which were captivating reads。 The only story that I was less than impressed with was "The Room in Le Dragon Volant" which I felt was cluttered, poorly paced and to put it frankly quaint。 。。。more

Fantastic。 Every time I have a hint of doubt in the classics, they seem to take it personally somehow and thrash me about。While 'Green tea' was a bit slower and sort of dated, all the other stories here are legitimately masterpieces。 The watcher in 'The Familiar' somehow came to life through the story and followed me about audibly, but invisibly, prickling my hairs as I tore through the story, and the trials in 'Justice Harbottle' made me think of Pink Floyd's the wall sequence but mixed a bit w Fantastic。 Every time I have a hint of doubt in the classics, they seem to take it personally somehow and thrash me about。While 'Green tea' was a bit slower and sort of dated, all the other stories here are legitimately masterpieces。 The watcher in 'The Familiar' somehow came to life through the story and followed me about audibly, but invisibly, prickling my hairs as I tore through the story, and the trials in 'Justice Harbottle' made me think of Pink Floyd's the wall sequence but mixed a bit with pirates of the Caribbean (in a good way lol)? 'Dragon Volant', though disappointingly not a ghost story, is Poe on steroids out of nowhere and super enjoyable。 'Carmilla' is a bonafide gem。 Out of this world good。 I raced through it as fast as the dark riders did through the Austrian countryside。 "We sat down on a rude bench, under a group of magnificent lime trees。 The sun was setting with all its melancholy splendour behind the sylvan horizon, and the stream that flows beside our home, and passes under the steep old bridge I have mentioned, wound through many a group of noble trees, almost at our feet, reflecting in its current the fading crimson of the sky。" "。。。and often from a reverie I have started, fancying I heard the light step of Carmilla at the drawing-room door。" Perfectly haunting, straight to my favorites shelf。 。。。more

Excellent collection of Gothic stories, all but one a ghost story。 Other ghost stories of the time seem rather thin compared to LeFanu's。 He sets scenes and locales, and establishes characters more fully than the other writers of ghost stories I've read from that time with the exception of Dickens。 Not that these are flawless, but the power of his writing and the strength of his imagination carry the reader past the flaws。 And his prose is excellent。 Readers who only or mainly read contemporary Excellent collection of Gothic stories, all but one a ghost story。 Other ghost stories of the time seem rather thin compared to LeFanu's。 He sets scenes and locales, and establishes characters more fully than the other writers of ghost stories I've read from that time with the exception of Dickens。 Not that these are flawless, but the power of his writing and the strength of his imagination carry the reader past the flaws。 And his prose is excellent。 Readers who only or mainly read contemporary works may take a little time to adjust to his rhythms and word choices; but readers with experience reading older works should have little trouble slipping into these stories。 。。。more

Quality varies from story to story but overall it's an iconic piece of work。 Carmilla is a fabulous read for any fan of the Gothic genre (especially for a scholar of queer literature!) and I'd imagine that story is the one that introduces most people to the collection, but by no means should the other stories be overlooked。 I think The Room in the Dragon Volant is the second most obvious candidate for praise but I'd also like to give honourable mention to Green Tea as a personal favourite and me Quality varies from story to story but overall it's an iconic piece of work。 Carmilla is a fabulous read for any fan of the Gothic genre (especially for a scholar of queer literature!) and I'd imagine that story is the one that introduces most people to the collection, but by no means should the other stories be overlooked。 I think The Room in the Dragon Volant is the second most obvious candidate for praise but I'd also like to give honourable mention to Green Tea as a personal favourite and merit Mr。 Justice Harbottle for the imagery in the judge's condemnatory scene。 Stories you can keep coming back to! 。。。more

An interesting read。 I like reading nineteenth century horror because it’s entertaining to see where the genre was back then。 Carmilla was definitely the best story of the collection and it had so many “hints” of lesbianism it’s hard to imagine the author didn’t know what he was doing。 It was great to see one of the first modern vampires in literature!

I found the whole concept of this book and the way it was put together was such an interesting idea and really ingenious。 Some of the stories I loved, but I just found it was too scientifically/technically heavy for me to completely enjoy it。

Green Tea, The Familiar and Mr。 Justice Harbottle are interesting explorations of mental health through the use of the paranormal。 My favourite stories in the book are The Room in the Dragon Volant and Carmilla。 The Room in the Dragon Volant is an excellent story about the perils of trying to help a damsel in distress。 This story has a very slow build up which can seem a little bit tedious but it is worth it in the end。 Carmilla is a masterpiece of vampire fiction。 If you have the choice between Green Tea, The Familiar and Mr。 Justice Harbottle are interesting explorations of mental health through the use of the paranormal。 My favourite stories in the book are The Room in the Dragon Volant and Carmilla。 The Room in the Dragon Volant is an excellent story about the perils of trying to help a damsel in distress。 This story has a very slow build up which can seem a little bit tedious but it is worth it in the end。 Carmilla is a masterpiece of vampire fiction。 If you have the choice between reading Carmilla and Dracula I would strongly recommend you choose Carmilla。 。。。more

A collection of short stories and my notes of each story。1。 Green Tea: It makes me rethink drinking green before praying。 I don't want no monkey after me。2。 The Familiar: Considered to be Le Fanu's greatest ghost story。。。 Past sins hound a remorseful wrongdoer while a ghost shifts shapes, fades into crowds, follows closely behind, and tightens his net with increasing violence。 Could this ghost be Barton himself? Might likely be a connection similar to Dr。 Jekyll and Mr。 Hyde。3。 Mr。 Justice Harbo A collection of short stories and my notes of each story。1。 Green Tea: It makes me rethink drinking green before praying。 I don't want no monkey after me。2。 The Familiar: Considered to be Le Fanu's greatest ghost story。。。 Past sins hound a remorseful wrongdoer while a ghost shifts shapes, fades into crowds, follows closely behind, and tightens his net with increasing violence。 Could this ghost be Barton himself? Might likely be a connection similar to Dr。 Jekyll and Mr。 Hyde。3。 Mr。 Justice Harbottle: Mr。 Harbottle is a cruel judge known to convict and hang。 He has a dream that conjures both the ghostly presences of Harbottle's severely judged and hanged victims and a huge "dilated effigy" of the judge himself。 In this dream, he is condemned to death by his doppelganger。 Le Fanu's writing once again leads us through Harbottle's nightmare as a person watching it from the sidelines with twists。 I feel this reads a little like Charles Dickens。 4。 The Room in the Dragon Volant: More of a mystery rather than a ghost story as the other story's are。 A man is besotted with a woman and attempts to save her as he thinks she is extremely unhappy in her marriage。 She is actually part of a gang of murderous thieves who drug their victims and bury them alive。 Not a surprising ending but certainly a very entertaining tale。 5。 Carmilla: Said to be the story that influenced Bram Stoker in writing Dracula and other media like movies and TV shows。 Carmilla, a female vampire, seduces Laura, another young woman。 The author writes of homosexuality without actually naming it, which is likely one of the first looks into this during the time this story was written。 While the story never talks about sex, it is clear that Carmilla and Laura have a forbidden desire for each other。 。。。more
