Summary

If more business books were as useful, concise, and just plain fun to read as THE MCKINSEY WAY, the business world would be a better place。 --Julie Bick, best-selling author of ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW IN BUSINESS I LEARNED AT MICROSOFT。 Enlivened by witty anecdotes, THE MCKINSEY WAY contains valuable lessons on widely diverse topics such as marketing, interviewing, team-building, and brainstorming。 --Paul H。 Zipkin, Vice-Dean, The Fuqua School of Business

It's been called a breeding ground for gurus。 McKinsey & Company is the gold-standard consulting firm whose alumni include titans such as In Search of Excellence author Tom Peters, Harvey Golub of American Express, and Japan's Kenichi Ohmae。

When Fortune 100 corporations are stymied, it's the McKinsey-ites whom they call for help。 In THE MCKINSEY WAY, former McKinsey associate Ethan Rasiel lifts the veil to show you how the secretive McKinsey works its magic, and helps you emulate the firm's well-honed practices in problem solving, communication, and management。

He shows you how McKinsey-ites think about business problems and how they work at solving them, explaining the way McKinsey approaches every aspect of a task:
How McKinsey recruits and molds its elite consultants;
How to sell without selling;
How to use facts, not fear them;
Techniques to jump-start research and make brainstorming more productive;
How to build and keep a team at the top its game;
Powerful presentation methods, including the famous waterfall chart, rarely seen outside McKinsey;
How to get ultimate buy-in to your findings;
Survival tips for working in high-pressure organizations。

Both a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most admired and secretive companies in the business world and a toolkit of problem-solving techniques without peer, THE MCKINSEY WAY is fascinating reading that empowers every business decision maker to become a better strategic player in any organization。

A good book to understand about The Firm, especially to sb who want to be a part of it。

Erik

Trivial advices, valid ones。 Read the headlines only。Looks like a draft, appendix of the better book of the same author: Mckinsey Mind。 On the same subject, Mckinsey Engagement, also looks pretty much like Mckinsey Mind

THOMAS M

Not worth the read。 Very generic and loaded with cliches。

Miriam

Short and useful。

Chloe

Helpful tips but can be structured in a better way。 Some insights are scattered in the book which made it difficult to spot and remember。 The pyramid principles from Barbara Minto includes all info from this book but with more practical examples and better structure。

Its a quick and okay read。 Anyone who has done MBA or has worked in corporate culture for good 4-5 years would know most of the tips and tricks mentioned。 But the book has certainly made me understand more about why McKinsey is THE Consulting firm。 Certainly aim to implement some of the practices mentioned here。

Great book!

Ameer Asmar

Hardly revolutionary, but contains a few insights worth keeping in mind for those interested/currently working in consultancy。

Jennifer

Read for work。 Some useful takeaways but a lot of filler。

Lucas Reynolds

Worth a read for anyone whose job involves solving business problems。 Great insights on how to structure business problems, work toward a solution, and work better with your team and/or stakeholders。

Nishant Pal

Gives you an overview of consulting。

A great book to understand the structural thought process, analysis and interpretation of solution based consultants。

Entertaining。 This broke down the thought patterns of my mentors (whom were from consulting firms)。 I imagine this book to be invaluable for startups or those transitioning to a corporate career。 Generally anyone seeking to implement some form of structure to problem solving, client management and team/resource management。 This book is neither a primer nor deep in consulting so I do encourage you to Google or YouTube mock-cases if you are hoping to go in-depth with consulting。

I had this book since uni, as I always wanted to get into management consulting。 I have been clearing my bookshelf and noticed that I have never read this book。 After working as a management consultant for 5 years, I decided to read it。。。I was not impressed。 It is super high level, no deep insight into problem solving techniques and quite dated (e。g。 the glamour of working at McKinsey has worn out, especially long hours, working at weekends and living out of a suitcase)。

"No expectations, No Disappointments"。 But, it's hard to not have some when reading about "The Stalwart" of the corporate world。 All those wanting to give it a read thinking that it divulges trade secrets, this book is not for you。 Instead, if you're interested to know:1。 The philosophy that drives the firm2。 The subtle art of giving a f*ck to systemic consistencies 3。 How to channelize your professional integrity to create value for clients(and if 3 is your magic number too)Bingo! Another business book that gives occasional business advice, but mostly platitudes and anecdotes。I went into this book expecting more than it had to offer。 My thought was that McKinsey was the top consulting company and there must be something unique to that competitive advantage。 The advantage mostly seems to stem from a little hard work and mostly existing personal connections。Advisor such as, “Analysis must be fact based”, and, “consider searching the internet for information on a client befo Another business book that gives occasional business advice, but mostly platitudes and anecdotes。I went into this book expecting more than it had to offer。 My thought was that McKinsey was the top consulting company and there must be something unique to that competitive advantage。 The advantage mostly seems to stem from a little hard work and mostly existing personal connections。Advisor such as, “Analysis must be fact based”, and, “consider searching the internet for information on a client before beginning an engagement” range from common sense to opinion。The writing style is good, not distracting from the content。 It provides the writing in an accessible manner。 The drawback is it comes from an employee。 The author was a two year analyst for the company。 This results in the feel of someone who has drunk the kool aid while mainly just being star struck at the brand of McKinsey。There is some good business advice nestled in this ad for McKinsey。 But this book being out of time and out of insight ultimately make it just an ok book。 。。。more

。。more

The book explains the approaches behind consulting and MECE aspects with hypothesis building as roadmap, issue trees and arriving at recommendations smeared with insights of integrating this with people as part of every organisation。

Great book if you’re into consulting, or want to know more about consulting。 The author, Rasiel, describes perfectly how McKinsey thinks, what they do (from a day-to-day- basis) and explains why McKinsey is such a magnet for passionate people。

Pretty good read, an interesting look at a successful company。 A little too full of itself, sometimes it feels like the book tries to "own" certain industry best practice, but McKinsey's influence on its industry is significant -- it could be that these things started there。 Fast read, fun and worth it。 Pretty good read, an interesting look at a successful company。 A little too full of itself, sometimes it feels like the book tries to "own" certain industry best practice, but McKinsey's influence on its industry is significant -- it could be that these things started there。 Fast read, fun and worth it。 。。。more

Very Simple in a good way if you have no prior experience。 This book gives an excellent overview of the various facets one may potentially face within consulting。 It is not a detailed description of cases but rather a guide to surviving within the industry。 The only reason for the one star deduction is that this book was clearly written in the 80s and has not been updated since。

This book is a great first-look into the consulting world。 It’s well written, and the arguments the author wants to communicate are clear and direct。 Definitively McKinsey it’s a company that has changed the way business is done, always pushing to the limit。 Great book, I learned simple ideas that can have big impact inside a corporation。 I would love to read a new book about McKinsey, this is one is out of date in many sections。

It appears that a number of reviewers of this book were disappointed by the lack of answers it provided, as if they were coming to uncover some secret equation or unlock some hidden truth that would make their personal and professional lives easier to analyze。 But as someone who's been in the corporate game for a while, I'll start by saying that if there were ever some big secret to consulting, it'd have gone viral decades ago。 Think of it this way: You can find anything you need on the dark web It appears that a number of reviewers of this book were disappointed by the lack of answers it provided, as if they were coming to uncover some secret equation or unlock some hidden truth that would make their personal and professional lives easier to analyze。 But as someone who's been in the corporate game for a while, I'll start by saying that if there were ever some big secret to consulting, it'd have gone viral decades ago。 Think of it this way: You can find anything you need on the dark web。 NSA secrets have been hacked and disseminated before。 You can Google the KFC secret spice recipe。 Don't expect that THIS will be the one thing you've been unable to find before。That said, what this book does offer is a smart, concise way to structure your mind and life to become a better consultant。 McKinsey is a firm that works with companies of every industry, from electronics to Wall Street to clothing retailers to whatever else you can think of。 They've assisted clients on just about every continent, of every culture and language。 The formula for consulting must be flexible yet structured, globally applicable yet organized well enough that it can be applied time again。 This is more a book of rules for consultant (with some insider information specific to/from McKinsey employees) about how to organize your content with ideas like MECE, or conduct yourself during client interviews to get the information you need, or work with difficult teammates。 One reviewer pointed out that the suggestion to add charts to a presentation should be obvious, but he fails to recognize two things。 First, when making a presentation, you may not have the data to build visuals, so making a mental note to find data that can do that when possible is always a good reminder。 (Presentations are usually more difficult than they seem。) Second, the chapter was about HOW to display presentations, including tips like selecting a title that helps tell your story。 "Third Quarter Revenue/Losses" may be what your data is about, but stronger title might be, "Decreased Sales in Third Quarter Offset By Administrative Savings" will tell your client what they should glean。I know, there are probably thousands of other questions a more experienced consultant might have expected to be answered by this book, but personally, I found more than enough value in its lessons。 (Yes, hiring a good assistant is obvious。 Rewarding them and building a path for their growth at the company is not。) I was recommended this book by my mentor, and it didn't disappoint。 He suggested I just flip to the sections I need, like he does, because it doesn't necessarily need to be read front-to-back。 The way I work, though, is that I prefer to read it as the author intended to be absorbed。 I took notes along the way and saved them to my work desktop, so I can refer back to them at a quick click, and if I find myself needing to scour further, I know exactly where to go。The last thing I'll say is that most business books are fluff。 They take one or two great ideas, and write 300 unnecessary pages rather than a 1,000-word article, because it'll sell。 This book is short, at under 200 pages, and never repetitive。 Each section is a new concept that can be read in a few minutes。 It's practical, handy, and definitely something I'd recommend to any new or moderately experienced consultant。。。or any type of work professional, really。 Everyone can learn at least one new thing from this book。 。。。more
