Summary
A Long Walk to Water begins as two stories， told in alternating sections， about a girl in Sudan in 2008 and a boy in Sudan in 1985。 The girl， Nya， is fetching water from a pond that is two hours’ walk from her home: she makes two trips to the pond every day。 The boy， Salva， becomes one of the "lost boys" of Sudan， refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay。 Enduring every hardship from loneliness to attack by armed rebels to contact with killer lions and crocodiles， Salva is a survivor， and his story goes on to intersect with Nya’s in an astonishing and moving way。

This slight fictionalization of Salva Dut’s early life is a fine introduction to the story of the Lost Boys who were displaced by the Second Sudanese Civil War， starting in 1983。 It also highlights the power of his vision which has brought improvements to the lives of people in Southern Sudan where he had started life。

Based on the book's blurb and my interest in learning more about the Lost Boys of the Sudan， I had added the audio version of A Long Walk to Water to my wishlist over a year ago。 Although the narrative is written for a younger audience， I quickly realized how woefully inadequate my knowledge is of the cultural history for this region。 The story is told through a partially fictionalized dual narrative， one based on the true story of a boy named Salva who is uprooted from his home and family in 19 Based on the book's blurb and my interest in learning more about the Lost Boys of the Sudan， I had added the audio version of A Long Walk to Water to my wishlist over a year ago。 Although the narrative is written for a younger audience， I quickly realized how woefully inadequate my knowledge is of the cultural history for this region。 The story is told through a partially fictionalized dual narrative， one based on the true story of a boy named Salva who is uprooted from his home and family in 1985 due to civil war。 He goes through a harrowing journal of survival across the Akobo Desert 。 The second story is set during 2008 and describes the hardships a girl named Nya faces， as she spends most of her day making the arduous journey to collect water for her family。 The story is beautifully written， though there are some gruesome scenes which are integral to the story。 Beyond the despair and sadness， there is also a focus on the power of hope and determination。 The audio version is well produced with two narrators and the occasional use of sound effects or music， to mark the end of a chapter。 “One step at a time， one day at a time， just today， just this day to get through，” Salva would say。 Perhaps these are words everyone can relate to on a basic level， given the extremely troubling and distressing times we are currently living though。Interview with author Linda Sue Park and Salva Dut:https://youtu。be/GkxkisRUmMM 。。。more

4。5A great book to open up kids eyes to the hardships others have to go through just to survive。 It was also uplifting。 Both boys were less than enthusiastic about my selection for our family read but they both ended up loving it。

I read this with my son and though there were situations that happened that were really hard to read about。 It enlightened us to a part of the world that both of us didn’t know really anything about。 It also sparked great conversations and thoughts about how different life can be from what we are familiar with， also the perseverance this man had throughout his life is really incredible。

This is a book my daughters 6th grade class was reading so I wanted to read it too。 I LOVED it！ I love historical fiction， and I loved that kids could read it and understand how big this world is， and maybe learn a small part of what other children struggle with every day。
