Summary

In Jade War, the sequel to the Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy Award-nominated Jade City, the Kaul siblings battle rival clans for honor and control over an Asia-inspired fantasy metropolis。

On the island of Kekon, the Kaul family is locked in a violent feud for control of the capital city and the supply of magical jade that endows trained Green Bone warriors with supernatural powers they alone have possessed for hundreds of years。

Beyond Kekon's borders, war is brewing。 Powerful foreign governments and mercenary criminal kingpins alike turn their eyes on the island nation。 Jade, Kekon's most prized resource, could make them rich - or give them the edge they'd need to topple their rivals。

Faced with threats on all sides, the Kaul family is forced to form new and dangerous alliances, confront enemies in the darkest streets and the tallest office towers, and put honor aside in order to do whatever it takes to ensure their own survival - and that of all the Green Bones of Kekon。

Jade War is the second book of the Green Bone Saga, an epic trilogy about family, honor, and those who live and die by the ancient laws of blood and jade。

wow I loved book 1 but this one was even better。Notes:1。 Book 1 takes places over like 1 year but this book takes over 3-5 years。 It is much more fast paced and there are different paragraphs that indicate to the reader that 2-6 months have passed very quickly2。 The world is expanded immensely。 Overall I think the reader gets to visit 4 or 5 different countries and get a more in depth look into other cultures。 It's pretty obvious this book is heavily inspired by the Cold War and how the American wow I loved book 1 but this one was even better。Notes:1。 Book 1 takes places over like 1 year but this book takes over 3-5 years。 It is much more fast paced and there are different paragraphs that indicate to the reader that 2-6 months have passed very quickly2。 The world is expanded immensely。 Overall I think the reader gets to visit 4 or 5 different countries and get a more in depth look into other cultures。 It's pretty obvious this book is heavily inspired by the Cold War and how the Americans/Soviet Union affected the surrounding Asian countries3。 This was really Wen and Andy's book。 While book 1 was like what it's like to be a Green Bone in a place where Green Bones are respected, this book examines what it's like to not be a Green Bone or how to be a different kind of jade wearer4。 You see the immigrant experience of Kekonese-Espenians。 There are more vague details about Kekonese who live in Shotar as well。 I really enjoyed seeing how they wanted to retain their cultural heritage but also the amends/changes they made in a different land5。 The book is still brutal。 At the end of the day, they are warriors and both Hilo and Shae make some pretty violent decisions which at first is jarring。 But then you realize, you can't claim to be a Green Bone and not met out violence6。 (view spoiler)[ Andy gets a boyfriend!!!! alas it was not to last。 I want to see if he and Lott finally get together in book 3 (hide spoiler)]7。 It's very obvious the author has a corporate background because a。 Hilo is constantly working on mentoring younger Green Bones and b。 Shae expands the economic strength of the clan I am so pumped for book 3! 。。。more

Way too much exposition。 There were some points in the story where I just felt no connection to what was going on。 The first book was definitely the more enjoyable and impactful read。 Still, there were some epic moments and I loved the character development of Hilo and Shae。 I also like the additions of Niko and Ru and I cant wait to see how it all ends in book 3!

4。5 stars - Y’all, this book is a RIDE。 I am in awe of the depth and detail that goes into the series。 It’s incredibly written and the world/politics are so well done。 Plus, the characters are amazzzing and the end had me stressing。 The only reason it’s not 5 stars, for me, I found the writing to be a little impersonal and SO MUCH happens that I don’t have time for that emotional response that I personally crave。

Sequels are always hard to pull off, and I went in expecting not to like Jade War as much as I liked Jade City, but I'm glad I was proven wrong。 Both plot and character decisions were evolved properly, in a way that made sense to the story, the growing stakes, and the characters, though they're evolving, too。 I'm writing this review maybe 30 minutes after finishing this book, and I'm still a little wide-eyed at what happened at the end there。 Jade Legacy can't come soon enough! As with many middle books, it's hard to review without spoilers。 What I loved about Jade City is present in this book too。 I think it can be summed up as: consistently brilliant。 It all fits together with the first book excellently - the characters, their behaviour, the quality of the writing, the complexity and depth of everything。 For the rest of this review I'm just going to ramble about what happened!(view spoiler)[More female points of view! That is exactly what I was hoping for。 Especially for Wen。 I love that she got to kill Zapunyo and mete out clan justice herself。 I hope she recovers because my god, those few minutes where I thought she was dead were devastating。 Andy putting jade back on to heal her ;_; I was tearing up the whole time, also during the chapter afterwards where Shae tells Hilo。 But there's still a clear disparity between women and men in society that hasn't been explained。 I know it's inspired on real world countries, but I don't see the value in adding misogyny to this fictional world as well。 This will always be jarring to me。I was shocked at everything Shae went through in this book。 The clean blade fight was great (heart in my throat, god I really thought she would die) and it was nice seeing her attempting a relationship with Maro。 The fight was a great example of these books staying true to their established culture and character choices。 Wen and Shae's conversation after the abortion made me tear up too。 So glad they got to bond and become true sisters! But then, Shae having to kill Maro? Jesus。 It almost felt cruel。 I hope Shae doesn't die and gets to be happy in the end please。 This book also reminded me that I still never really understood why she used to spy for Espenia。 It seems like drastic action to take as a young woman rebelling from her traditional family。 But oh well, that's a nitpick I suppose。Andy's time in Espenia was fascinating。 I loved the progress and conflict of his relationship with Cory, along with his own character development。 I'm really hopeful for his future as a healer。 Through the Oortokan war and Andy's chapters, we can see how Green Bones/Kekonese culture are perceived to foreign countries。 Their honourable ways seem old fashioned, and the Kauls feel discomfort with the expanding international influence on their jade。 And yet, they must break tradition and push the clan into the modern era。 The exposition covering the history of the other countries is organic - it feels natural in everyone's thoughts, rather than being paragraphs of an infodump。 It's all so well written! What's even more interesting is how the Kauls clearly aren't the 'heroes' either。 Green Bones in their grandfather's time were the heroes of Kekon, but everything's changing now。 You can certainly root for them and empathise with their point of view, but you can also see where the other groups (Ayt Mada, Zapunyo, the Keko-Espenians) are coming from as well。 I have to say, Hilo killing Eyni and stealing his nephew was fucked up。 Niko is her child and it was her choice that she didn't want him to be a Green Bone。 It happened so quickly, I was so shocked! I wonder if this will come back to haunt him later。 Honestly, I hope so。After Jade City I wanted to hear more from Ayt Mada, the Pillar of the rival clan。 She's quite thin as a villain, but you can see how intelligent and strategic she is too。 Shae has a great conversation with her right at the end that does shed some light, but I still have many questions。 (hide spoiler)]This is a series to be judged as a whole, rather than as separate books。 In a good way。 It's incredibly rich and detailed, all flowing together nicely。 There is something that keeps me at a slight distance from being truly in love with this series though。 I'm not sure what it is。 Maybe it'll all click together in the end。 Nevertheless, the quality of this series is truly incredible。 I'm glad I read this book now, giving me some time to process everything in time for Jade Legacy。 I have very high hopes for the final book。 November is going to be a busy month for sequels! 4。25 stars for this one, but I'll revisit the ratings once I've read Legacy。 。。。more

A little slower than the first book with slightly less twists and turns, but overall a good sequel。 Still building up to a big final moment in the war we hope to see in fruition in the final novel。 Although I’m getting a little tired of the back and forth and tensions between clans, it still is a fun read I thoroughly enjoyed。 Just wish some of the stakes they create in the world are explored more and given more spotlight。

i don't think i'll ever stop being so surprised when authors make their sequels hit so much harder than you would expect after everything you think you know in the first book。。。for the first hundred pages or so, i have to admit that i felt a bit removed from this second installment in the greenbone saga。 at first, the author's heavy use of detail not just in the characters but also in all the different settings felt like a slog to get through, which really irritated me because i do care a lot ab i don't think i'll ever stop being so surprised when authors make their sequels hit so much harder than you would expect after everything you think you know in the first book。。。for the first hundred pages or so, i have to admit that i felt a bit removed from this second installment in the greenbone saga。 at first, the author's heavy use of detail not just in the characters but also in all the different settings felt like a slog to get through, which really irritated me because i do care a lot about the story。 the fact that i wasn't completely reeled in at the beginning kind of just threw me off and for a good while, i had to consider that maybe i was so attached to how much i loved the first book for setting up this fantasy world and establishing this diverse cast of characters that i was a little far behind in catching up with how fast things were moving forward。 politics were becoming more inextricably tied into the story, as well as foreign disputes and so i had to adjust a bit to how much there was to take in。 with all that said, as far as the star rating obviously goes to show, i did end up enraptured with everything that was going on, pausing for brief moments of time to exclaim over certain events in the book and all the surprising twists。 what used to feel like stubbornly dragging myself through cement turned into a much more wonderful reading experience as i saw how much the characters i loved so much through their introductions in the first book had grown and would be pushed past their limits over a long stretch of time in this sequel alone。 there's a plethora of insights we get from a wide range of characters, even the most minor of them having such a significant impact one way or another in the story that you're invested in every single chapter。 hilo, shae, and anden--from what i see a lot on social media-- seem to have the biggest audiences but there's so many others that are written just as complex and intriguing that it sucks you in completely。 bero's pov could be one example, a character who in the first book was completely unsufferable and downright hateful and in this book, not that many things have changed but i do have to confess here that i thought him to be really interesting; how the author has utilized his character from the beginning up to the end of this second book is too fascinating to ignore。 one of my favorite parts about the fantasy genre is that one of the main things it stems from in its foundation is how far both the writer and the reader's imagination go with the story it's trying to tell。 and with that imagination, comes the consideration of how well you have to be to see these characters deep down into their roots and flesh them out so that they have their own stakes in the story, enough to tug at the strings and guide the narrative themselves。 this entire saga has its solid elements--morally grey characters, familial ties, power, cultural heritage, and more--and all of that does drive the story to head onto its own collision once we eventually reach the finale, but the characters have the ultimate grasp and so they're the ones that tug at the strings of the narrative。 some of the decisions they make are heart-pounding and can be widely considered as inexcusable or just a complete mistake, but they never fail in their passions to persevere no matter the odds stacked against them so just as many questionable choices as they make, there's some smart and calculative ones to balance it all out。 the heart of it all among certain characters always shines through as you see their connections to family, but there's also others to consider when you see them practically all alone or find themselves to be completely self-sufficient。 there's a ton of advantages and disadvantages that all these characters have and so sometimes they have the upper hand while in other times their faults are used against them。 every single scene that happens in this book is crafted with so much fine detail that you feel like you're being given as much consideration as the characters themselves to understand the dangers that might be laying on ahead and decide how best you could move forward so you're still standing。 small slights still happen, moments of carelessness despite refined Perception for some where death comes to the character, and it's really cool because it displays this sense of control that the author has over the story where it's obvious that as much as the characters are moving the narrative, sometimes they can't always win so you notice the author's careful manuevers to push them in certain directions--even at the cost of a character's immense grief or power。 i just loved all of it, i loved seeing hilo and shae in their respective roles as Pillar and Weather Man and how far they come to bend and twist everything they are continuing to learn so as not to back down despite all the expectations against them。 they feel so different from the first book, so much that felt certain getting uprooted until they have to take the reins and steer themselves to the next best path for their clan。 anden is just the same after the final events in the first book, his relationship with jade--which plays a huge part in this entire saga--also bending and twisting based on all the new information he learns separate from all he's known growing up。 new characters you meet feel like you've known them for much longer and so their fates don't leave you feeling untouched despite everything else tugging you apart in the story, and that's just absolutely incredible on the author's part。 there's so much in this book alone that at first it was hard for me to take in, but quickly it felt clear how much the author was paying careful attention to every nook and cranny in this fantasy world that they have built, not leaving behind any traces of plot holes or supposedly small details that don't seem incriminating at first glance。 it's the kind of eye that makes you constantly suspicious with every passing comment that they write, their ways of ending some chapters seeming innocuous at best but feeling like a subtle foreshadowing that could escalate into a hellstorm at worst。 overall, there just came a point in my reading experience in this story where i respected the author too much for everything they've done so far that i couldn’t give this book anything less than five stars。 and there's still so much more to come, i can't wait。 content warnings//:graphic: depiction of violence, descriptions of blood & injury, gore, and murdermoderate: alcohol content, body horror, death, drug use, explorations of grief, medical content, sexual content, suicidal ideation, torture, and xenophobiaminor: genocide, rape, suicide 。。。more

God。。。 this series is so good。 I could talk at length about all the things I love, but I think I'll keep it relatively short and just say, the climactic moment towards the end where two beloved characters come within inches of death and escape only when all hope seems lost。。。 my heart was in my throat。 I was pacing up and down listening to the audiobook literally chanting "no no no no no" under my breath。 It was TENSE, y'all。 That's what this book does best, perhaps。 It plays with tension, with God。。。 this series is so good。 I could talk at length about all the things I love, but I think I'll keep it relatively short and just say, the climactic moment towards the end where two beloved characters come within inches of death and escape only when all hope seems lost。。。 my heart was in my throat。 I was pacing up and down listening to the audiobook literally chanting "no no no no no" under my breath。 It was TENSE, y'all。 That's what this book does best, perhaps。 It plays with tension, with levels of heightened emotion, easing off into something simple and slow only to build to another crescendo。 It's a story where it has been firmly established that nobody is safe。 I fully believe that any one of the main characters could die at any time, and that makes the action moments SO stressful, in the best way。I love the way most of the characters do horrible things that I could never forgive, and yet I'm still。。。 rooting for them? There's a terrible complexity in their motivations that enriches and enlivens and makes me mad at one person and then mad at another, simultaneously on everyone's side and nobody's。 It's masterfully done, and I eagerly await the conclusion of the trilogy! 。。。more

I'm loving everything about this series! Waiting for the next book is going to suck。 Short Rant with my Immediate Thoughts and Feelings:Jade War was a little more political than Jade City, but don't think that makes the story any less awesome。 This is a still a gangster family story, but elevated to a grander scale as the storyline begins to move beyond the borders of Kekon into the wider world。 This series is pretty dark overall。 Not a lighthearted, easy read, but it is a ton of fun rega I'm loving everything about this series! I can't even find the right words to describe this book。 It outdid Jade City in every single way which shouldn't be possible, but Fonda Lee made it possible。It wasn't that long ago that I read book one so I didn't find it hard to jump right into the world and Lee's writing certainly helped that along。 There's a noticeabe improvement in pacing too。 The same beginning parts where book one was slow, book two said "let's go faster"。There's not one dull moment in Jade War。Every scene has a purpose, w I can't even find the right words to describe this book。 It outdid Jade City in every single way which shouldn't be possible, but Fonda Lee made it possible。It wasn't that long ago that I read book one so I didn't find it hard to jump right into the world and Lee's writing certainly helped that along。 There's a noticeabe improvement in pacing too。 The same beginning parts where book one was slow, book two said "let's go faster"。There's not one dull moment in Jade War。Every scene has a purpose, whether it's from the PoV of characters we like or dislike。 Anden didn't really redeem himself with me until the very end, but Shae did well。 She's officially cool now。 Wen got a much bigger role this time and she's growing into one of my favourite characters。 Hilo is probably going to stay my number one forever though。 I also love all the children (but Niko is the best)。 There were a few deaths that I'm upset over。 I have an issue with the first one, the bigger one。 It happens fast and even though I really liked the character, I didn't feel it as deeply as the second, more minor one who went out in a blaze of glory。Some more thoughts:- Cory。 I borderline hate him。 I can't explain why, I just do。 (view spoiler)[I'm glad he and Anden are broken up now and I'm hoping they don't get back together。 He's not right for him。 (hide spoiler)]- I'm happy Anden was sent away for most of the book。 There, I said it。 Sorry。 I WAS SO MAD AT HIM。 But as a result we got super long chapters in his PoV。。。I think it was good for him to get out of Kekon and make a life elsewhere for a while。 - Bero had so few chapters, maybe a bit more than last time。 I thought I'd finally start hating him when I began reading, but no。 (view spoiler)[Jade Legacy has one more shot to make it come true。 (hide spoiler)]- Rohn deserved better。 He was my favourite character from abroad。 (view spoiler)[But like I mentioned above, he went out in a blaze of glory so it's okay。 (hide spoiler)]ALL IN ALL, I can't wait for Jade Legacy, it's going to be amazing and my faves better not die。 。。。more
