Summary

Seven days to fall in love, fifteen years to forget and seven days to get it all back again。。。 From the author of The Perfect Find, this is a witty, romantic, and sexy-as-hell new novel of two writers and their second chance at love

Brooklynite Eva Mercy is a single mom and bestselling erotica writer, who is feeling pressed from all sides。 Shane Hall is a reclusive, enigmatic, award-winning literary author who, to everyone's surprise, shows up in New York。

When Shane and Eva meet unexpectedly at a literary event, sparks fly, raising not only their past buried traumas, but the eyebrows of New York's Black literati。 What no one knows is that twenty years earlier, teenage Eva and Shane spent one crazy, torrid week madly in love。 They may be pretending that everything is fine now, but they can't deny their chemistry-or the fact that they've been secretly writing to each other in their books ever since。

Over the next seven days in the middle of a steamy Brooklyn summer, Eva and Shane reconnect, but Eva's not sure how she can trust the man who broke her heart, and she needs to get him out of New York so that her life can return to normal。 But before Shane disappears again, there are a few questions she needs answered。 。 。

With its keen observations of Black life and the condition of modern motherhood, as well as the consequences of motherless-ness, Seven Days in June is by turns humorous, warm and deeply sensual。

So much to love about this book and I did love it。 I love a book that effectively uses humor to show us how to absorb a story or subject matters that are so intense in real time they may be too difficult to hear or read about otherwise。 It's not an easy thing to do well。 This author successfully relied on that skill quite a bit to tell Eva and Shane's love story and she was often pitch perfect in how she delivered it to the reader。 The quintessential Brooklyn, New York Black writer's panel discu So much to love about this book and I did love it。 I love a book that effectively uses humor to show us how to absorb a story or subject matters that are so intense in real time they may be too difficult to hear or read about otherwise。 It's not an easy thing to do well。 This author successfully relied on that skill quite a bit to tell Eva and Shane's love story and she was often pitch perfect in how she delivered it to the reader。 The quintessential Brooklyn, New York Black writer's panel discussion and the dinner parties alone were as outstanding as they were funny and realistic。 Were there occasions when I thought the writer's use of humor came off hollow and flippant? Yup, several times。 And that was mostly noticeable because her rendering of Shane and Eva from beginning to end was so awesomely satisfying and on point。 It was those two characters, their damage, their passions, their interconnection and their love story that ultimately saved the novel for me not the wickedly apropos wit and verve served up by the author。 In fact, the couple part was so good, along with the character exploration of Eva's mom and Eva's precocious daughter, I had to wonder how the author might pull off a serious more literary vibe。 In the end though, I ditched the thought cause。。。shrug, it doesn't matter。 The book left me hazy, entertained, and happy with what I got, a deep and abiding look at a connection between two extremely cool Black lovers -- hiding in plain sight within the well written pages of a socially t0nal contemporary romance。 I'll take that and more please, any day。 。。。more

So many people gave 5 stars to this, and I can see why it would be so widely loved, but it just didn't really work for me。 Mild spoilers ahead。TW: self-harm, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, suicide。I liked the characters most of the time。 I thought Eva was a wonderful mum and person, and I wanted her to get everything she wanted, but Audrey felt way older than she actually was。 I understand how quirky children are entertaining for some, but it just felt unbelievable for a 12-yo to talk to the way she So many people gave 5 stars to this, and I can see why it would be so widely loved, but it just didn't really work for me。 Mild spoilers ahead。TW: self-harm, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, suicide。I liked the characters most of the time。 I thought Eva was a wonderful mum and person, and I wanted her to get everything she wanted, but Audrey felt way older than she actually was。 I understand how quirky children are entertaining for some, but it just felt unbelievable for a 12-yo to talk to the way she did。 She felt at least 15。 And not because she was into politics and art and psychology, but just the words that she used and her mannerisms, her age just didn't click for me。And all the pop-culture references got really bothersome at some point。 We get it, you live in 2019 Brooklyn。 But like others said, this only dates your book。 I think having less cultural references would have made it easier to swallow。 There was also a judgy vibe to this book。 The way the author described hipster stuff and side characters' choices, it felt like she was rolling her eyes and expected you to do it too, and I did not feel in on the joke。 Why does it matter that the waitress had a short pixie, bright pink haircut? Or why did you make Audrey's friends into spoiled, empty-headed brats? These kind of details felt pointless and judgy, especially when the book as a whole was not detailed enough。 Like "ugh can you believe these kids nowadays", ok boomer。I wanted more of their relationship。 I wanted more backstory, more yearning。 It was just they meet at 17, 15 years later they finally decide its time to meet again and pretty much directly fall into each other。 15 years is a looooong time。 Eva was married at some point。 I get it, they've been in love for 15 years and it was love at first sight, but I find that, well, boring。 Not to mention their week together at 17 was not what the blurb made it out to be。 They were drunk and high and like others mentioned, there was an insane co-dependent vibe going on that was not healthy love by any means, in fact it made me kind of uncomfortable。 I just find it hard that after 15 years it was just that easy。 I would have liked it a thousand times better if the book had been a bit longer and explored them falling back in love with each other, not just "and they were soulmates, omg they were soulmates"。Also can we talk about what the author did to that one character。 One of my pet peeves in romances is using a character for drama, to either split the couple or get them together。 The character was just not developed enough for that to have the impact it should have。 I also saw it coming miles away and it was just a drag to get through。 Not to mention that the whole drama of this could have been avoided with a simple text。 You make it so clear to us that you live in the 21st century, there was no excuse for communication to be an issue like it was。There were also some positives though。 I liked the way invisible disability was portrayed and the discussion on literature, especially erotic literature being just as valid as all other genres。 And overall, it was fun。 It was a pretty easy, quick read that let me unwind after a long day, so cookie points for that。 But yeah, not my fave。 。。。more

To say that I loved this would be the understatement of the year。 If I hadn’t read writers and lovers, this would absolutely be my favorite contemporary of 2021。Aubre stole the show for me。

I’m a bit surprised by how much I like this one。 It’s a Reese pick, but it sounded a little trashy。 Not so。 I loved that the main characters are both best-selling authors。 The knew each other briefly but in a life-changing way back when they were twelve。 (I must admit it disturbed me that they had an intense sexual relationship at 12)。 And their best-selling books are about each other。 This book is about two people with rough childhoods— childhoods that weren’t childhoods。 Shane went from foster I’m a bit surprised by how much I like this one。 It’s a Reese pick, but it sounded a little trashy。 Not so。 I loved that the main characters are both best-selling authors。 The knew each other briefly but in a life-changing way back when they were twelve。 (I must admit it disturbed me that they had an intense sexual relationship at 12)。 And their best-selling books are about each other。 This book is about two people with rough childhoods— childhoods that weren’t childhoods。 Shane went from foster home to foster home and used alcohol and drugs to numb his pain。 Genevieve grew up with a mom who neglected her in favor of her many boyfriends。 Genevieve suffered from debilitating migraines her whole life and cut herself to numb her pain。 The two reunite at a book conference and they’re much stronger better people now, but still the same down deep。 He’s got the underprivileged kids he teaches to make him better; she’s got her daughter who is living the beautifully privileged life Genevieve never had。 This is a romance that hits all the right notes。 。。。more

I was totally drawn in to this more than I thought I would be。 I liked the characters and their dialogue (which is not something I usually feel strongly about, unless it is bad), and the backstory was compelling。 The sex scenes were more descriptive than I would have liked (and I didn’t know they would be when I checked this out), but there weren’t that many of them。 Of course the conflict at the end was a bit forced as it tends to be in romance novels, but I’m happy with how it everything resol I was totally drawn in to this more than I thought I would be。 I liked the characters and their dialogue (which is not something I usually feel strongly about, unless it is bad), and the backstory was compelling。 The sex scenes were more descriptive than I would have liked (and I didn’t know they would be when I checked this out), but there weren’t that many of them。 Of course the conflict at the end was a bit forced as it tends to be in romance novels, but I’m happy with how it everything resolved。 。。。more

Realistic, flawed characters who you root for。 Propulsive storyline that moves along at a great pace。 Yes, there's steamy romance, but it fits, it builds character - it doesn't seem egregiously steamy。 I thought this one may have been overhyped online, but I enjoyed it! This novel started off really strong for me and I felt I was going to adore it。 Unfortunately though i felt it was all very superficial with very little depth at the end。 This story is riddled with heavy-laden themes such as racism, femism, trauma, grief and loss, healing, survival。 All of which I felt needed more attention but the author seemed to just gloss over them, touching on them so briefly I think I was left with a little bit of whiplash。 Pro though, this made for a very easy read in a s This novel started off really strong for me and I felt I was going to adore it。 Unfortunately though i felt it was all very superficial with very little depth at the end。 This story is riddled with heavy-laden themes such as racism, femism, trauma, grief and loss, healing, survival。 All of which I felt needed more attention but the author seemed to just gloss over them, touching on them so briefly I think I was left with a little bit of whiplash。 Pro though, this made for a very easy read in a sense, but then i just dragged the experience out because it really just fizzled。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5; easy reading with lots of hype but personally very little reward。 I much prefer stories that delve into characters and themes much more, so felt the development in the story to be very tip of the iceberg with so much more potential underneath the surface that could have been addressed more 。。。more

Overall, Seven Days in June was a good book and while some parts tripped me up, I still liked large parts of it。 I loved how painfully sensitive Shane’s character is, how eloquently he expressed his vulnerabilities, and how violently he loved Eva。 I loved how quietly strong Eva was for her daughter, how she wanted desperately to break the Mercier women’s curse for Audra’s sake。 。。。more
