Summary

A Maiden

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own。 The life of the Maiden is solitary。 Never to be touched。 Never to be looked upon。 Never to be spoken to。 Never to experience pleasure。 Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods。 But the choice has never been hers。

A Duty

The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself。 Because a Maiden has a heart。 And a soul。 And longing。 And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need。 He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden。

A Kingdom

Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance。 And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred。 Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel。

I know everyone was hyped about this book, so I probably should have expected that it would be great, but it still was a huge surprise!I loved this story。 Poppy is just great, and she feels very real。 It is not the kind of female character that just accepts her fate, pleases everyone and does as told, but she manages to get the best out of her situation which may not be the best (I'll leave this topic here to avoid spoilers)Hawke is a great companion in her adventures, as Vikter, Tawny and Rylan I know everyone was hyped about this book, so I probably should have expected that it would be great, but it still was a huge surprise!I loved this story。 Poppy is just great, and she feels very real。 It is not the kind of female character that just accepts her fate, pleases everyone and does as told, but she manages to get the best out of her situation which may not be the best (I'll leave this topic here to avoid spoilers)Hawke is a great companion in her adventures, as Vikter, Tawny and Rylan。 When it comes to worldbuilding: I found the Ascended idea very fun and different, it is kind of a lady/lord situation, not based on wealth but still related to where and when you were born。 The mist is maybe something we have seen/read before, but did not fall as a cliché。TLDR; you should really read this book :) 。。。more

Oh my gods! It's been so long since I felt this way about a book。 It was amazinggggg。 Poppy's journey from being the Maiden on whose shoulders rested the future of the entire land to her metamorphosis into the girl that knew what she wanted with her life and wasn't afraid to get it。 And Hawk!! He was the perfect antihero to this story。 Him and Poppy were so perfect for one another。 Loved this book。 Strongly recommend itttt。。。 Oh my gods! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wow。 I loved it, most of it anyways。There is not much I’m disappointed with, but there is one thing。 The one thing I am disappointed about is the fact that most of these big “shockers” and plot twists that were in the book, I did see coming, or at least suspected。 There was foreshadowing, yeah, that’s cool, but part of me wishes that it had been written or worded differently to not cause readers to be suspicious。 I would’ve loved this book that much more if there were stronger plot twists。 The o Wow。 I loved it, most of it anyways。There is not much I’m disappointed with, but there is one thing。 The one thing I am disappointed about is the fact that most of these big “shockers” and plot twists that were in the book, I did see coming, or at least suspected。 There was foreshadowing, yeah, that’s cool, but part of me wishes that it had been written or worded differently to not cause readers to be suspicious。 I would’ve loved this book that much more if there were stronger plot twists。 The only thing I can recall that actually surprised me was the fact that "Hawke" knew it was Poppy at the Red Pearl, but that was it。Reactions to MAIN(ish) Characters' deaths:Vikter, oh my god, I was balling, and I hated that "Hawke" wasn't there in time to save him, but once I had found out that the Duke had been killed with THE cane, I screamed in joy。 I knew Hawke had killed him, it was so obvious, so obvious I'm kind of surprised Poppy didn't also come to that conclusion sooner。 Lord Mazeen, OH MY GOD, I WAS SCREAMING THE WHOLE TIME, LITERALLY CHEERING。 Phillips。 Oh my god, for some reason I grew SUCH AN ATTACHMENT to him, like oh my god, so sweet, he actually tried to save Poppy, he tried so hard。 So, I cried when he died, because I was just in such awe of him。The ending。。 What? I am a little disappointed with the ending。 I just want to go trade Poppy to get Casteel’s brother back, like why don’t we get that done sooner than later? So, why are we going to get married? And, I don’t want Poppy to go to Atlantia, nor do I really want the story to go there。 I wasn’t even surprised to find out she was half Atlantian, I was actually kind of bummed。 Like, that is so lame。 Half? I don’t know -- I just really want to go find Poppy’s brother and Casteel’s, so we can all be happy, but no。 I hate that it took me so long to read this book though because I feel like I could've experienced so much more excitement reading it, but honestly, at some points of reading this book, I felt like I was reading it because it was a chore。 I honestly wouldn't have read the whole thing if I hadn't owned it, but since I bought it, I read it all。 And, in the end, I am SUPER happy that I finished it, but some parts of it were uninteresting and made me not want to read it。(Okay, also, it made me think of The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller, so I loved it, even more when I made that connection。 I loved that book so much, I can't even express how much。 So, DEFINITELY, please, read The Shadows Between Us。 It is AMAZING。)But, overall, I loved it so much, and I will definitely be buying the next book asap。 。。。more

3。5/5 MAYBE 4/5 I’ll have to come back after I’ve thought about it more。Honestly, there were some things that annoyed me about this book。 The middle seemed to drag, there were far too many unanswered questions from the beginning of the book - I felt exhausted trying to figure out what was going on。 (And tbh, I almost set this one aside and dnf。) The language used by some of the characters seems more like modern slang, which tore me out of the fantasy setting “So inappropriate。” Being one of them 3。5/5 MAYBE 4/5 I’ll have to come back after I’ve thought about it more。Honestly, there were some things that annoyed me about this book。 The middle seemed to drag, there were far too many unanswered questions from the beginning of the book - I felt exhausted trying to figure out what was going on。 (And tbh, I almost set this one aside and dnf。) The language used by some of the characters seems more like modern slang, which tore me out of the fantasy setting “So inappropriate。” Being one of them - I thought I was going to tear my hair out if Poppy said it one more time。 Also “honeydew” - gag。 But the positives far outweigh any minor grievances I had。 I absolutely loved both main characters, and I particularly love how morally grey the love interest is。 All I can say right now is I REALLY enjoyed this, and it was not at all what I expected。 The last ~200 pages were a whirlwind in the best way。 I was screaming as I was reading the last pages, because I didn’t want it to end。 I’m excited to get my hands on the sequel。 。。。more

Why am I crying rn? Why did I love this book so? Why is the next book not available from the library for 18 weeks? These are the mysteries I’m dealing with at the end of this book。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved this book so much。 Poppy is the first character that I was like YES that’s how I’d act if I had that training。 And I love Hawke。。。 Casteel。 I’m interested to see his true intentions cause I don’t think he knows them yet。

I absolutely loved the blood From Blood and Ash, I would recommend this book easily。 The only problem I had with this book is that you have to pay attention or it is easy to get lost。 I did love the way Poppy was a strong character and wasn’t scared to stand up for herself even though she was “The Maiden” and wasn’t allowed to do any of the stuff she did。 There were so many twists and turns that I couldn’t stop reading it。 The ending had me wanting to throw the book at the wall but it was so goo I absolutely loved the blood From Blood and Ash, I would recommend this book easily。 The only problem I had with this book is that you have to pay attention or it is easy to get lost。 I did love the way Poppy was a strong character and wasn’t scared to stand up for herself even though she was “The Maiden” and wasn’t allowed to do any of the stuff she did。 There were so many twists and turns that I couldn’t stop reading it。 The ending had me wanting to throw the book at the wall but it was so good and I can’t wait to start on the second in the series。 。。。more

This was just bad。 Why did this won the goodreads choice awards for romance? I didn’t see the chemistry between Hawke and Poppy so I was not there for the romance。 It felt kind of like grooming to me since Poppy was so naive and innocent before this。 The world building was not well done。 We got next to no info and than suddenly we got it all dumped on us in the worst way possible。 Was there a plot? For 600 pages I felt like nothing happened and then we had tiny bits of plot sprinkled in。 It felt This was just bad。 Why did this won the goodreads choice awards for romance? I swear the fact she had powers, was supposed to be ascend and was so special was mentioned over and over。 There was a random werewolf appearance that felt like it came out of nowhere。 The writing wasn’t good and it felt so tropey。 Plus honey dew, why??? This felt like it was trying to be Throne of glass and a court of thorns and roses but just didn’t work。 1。5/5 stars。 Throne of glass is far superior and I recommend reading that instead。 It wasn’t even fun like a lesson in thorns is to read。 。。。more

4。25 i had parts of this spoiled bc of tiktok but i'm not upset bc it sort of lessons my anticipation anxiety which is good as i can focus more on the story。 and also knowing it allowed some bits throughout the piece to stand out to me that i was upset at poppy for taking so damn long to figure it out。 i don't do vampire stuff, the vampire diaries excluded, i try to not do vampires or werewolves stuff so it was weird knowing that these are aspects of these books but so far they haven't set me of 4。25 i had parts of this spoiled bc of tiktok but i'm not upset bc it sort of lessons my anticipation anxiety which is good as i can focus more on the story。 and also knowing it allowed some bits throughout the piece to stand out to me that i was upset at poppy for taking so damn long to figure it out。 i don't do vampire stuff, the vampire diaries excluded, i try to not do vampires or werewolves stuff so it was weird knowing that these are aspects of these books but so far they haven't set me off so that's good。 。。。more

Jennifer L。 Armentrout has a phenomenal writing style。 At first, I was confused by the world she was building and after an exciting start, the book seemed to get bogged down into story-building and the plot was slow。 However, the plot and story soon picked up and I found myself devouring this book。 The character development and drama had me hooked。。。and I definitely just rush ordered the next book in the series!

Real talk I didn’t realize that this book was about vampires until 2/3 of the way in。 I mean it was okay but idk。 Hawke gave me serious Rysand vibes and unpopular opinion I always hated that character。 Also I thought this book as supposed to be way sexier than it was。 Hawke was wayyyy toooo pushy and gave me serious red flags numerous times。
