Summary

An American frigate, tracking down a ship-sinking monster, faces not a living creature but an incredible invention -- a fantastic submarine commanded by the mysterious Captain Nemo。 Suddenly a devastating explosion leaves just three survivors who find themselves prisoners in Nemo's death ship on an underwater odyssey around the world, as Captain Nemo -- one of the most horrible villains ever created -- takes his revenge out on society。 This novel, written in 1870, foretells with uncanny accuracy the inventions and advanced technology of the 20th century, and has become a literary stepping-stone for generations of science-fiction writers。

Overall, I enjoyed the first half of this book more than the second。The story picks up at a great pace, and advances the plot while balancing much of the wonder in exploring the depths of world under water。 However, towards the mid way point, Verne seems to run out of ideas in terms of underwater exploration and only uses 2 more interesting points of his sea-world。 The over usage of points in the story where the professor and Conseil would classify underwater creatures became an exercise in tedi Overall, I enjoyed the first half of this book more than the second。The story picks up at a great pace, and advances the plot while balancing much of the wonder in exploring the depths of world under water。 However, towards the mid way point, Verne seems to run out of ideas in terms of underwater exploration and only uses 2 more interesting points of his sea-world。 The over usage of points in the story where the professor and Conseil would classify underwater creatures became an exercise in tedium and served no purpose to the plot。 Unfortunately, the second half of this book suffered from more of those classification sessions than the first half and it really made the second half of this book drag on。 What is most unfortunate about Twenty Thousand Leagues is the fact that the writing simply meanders for multiple chapters at a time while not advancing the plot in any way。 As a result, large parts of the book can simply be skipped without the reader feeling as if some important plot point was missed。Quite simply, this book can be boiled down to having the reader reach the point where the professor, Ned and Conseil board the Nautilus, then skip straight to the final chapter。 There just isn't anything in between that makes the book a worthwhile read。 。。。more

This was a good read。 I enjoyed it to the fullest。 It was like, I myself was on this underwater tour of the world on Captain Nemo's submarine。 The book is worthy of being called a true classic。 This can also be a perfect gift to a young kid who enjoys reading。 A light and easy read with loads of information about the ocean and earth's geography。 I kept consulting my map for various places that the author talks about and kept Googling for different fishes that the author mentioned。 A perfect enjo This was a good read。 I enjoyed it to the fullest。 It was like, I myself was on this underwater tour of the world on Captain Nemo's submarine。 The book is worthy of being called a true classic。 This can also be a perfect gift to a young kid who enjoys reading。 A light and easy read with loads of information about the ocean and earth's geography。 I kept consulting my map for various places that the author talks about and kept Googling for different fishes that the author mentioned。 A perfect enjoyable read。 。。。more

I read this as a child。 I remember the adventures and all what the sea men lived was engaging。 The prose was easy。 The original is in French。 I will try to read it in English soon。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It’s a good book。 Lots of adventures and it teaches you a lot about the sea。 I think it would be cool if we followed the exact instructions of where the Nautilus went because it gives the longitude and latitude often and found the tunnels and caves they visited, who knows maybe even Atlantis could be found。 Annoyingly the book ends rather ambiguously with the mc blacking out and then waking up in a hut。 We do not find out whether the nautilus survives or gets crushed by the whirlpool。 I found th It’s a good book。 Lots of adventures and it teaches you a lot about the sea。 I think it would be cool if we followed the exact instructions of where the Nautilus went because it gives the longitude and latitude often and found the tunnels and caves they visited, who knows maybe even Atlantis could be found。 Annoyingly the book ends rather ambiguously with the mc blacking out and then waking up in a hut。 We do not find out whether the nautilus survives or gets crushed by the whirlpool。 I found the incomplete end rather irritating。 。。。more

A dated classicI can imagine how this scientific adventure caught the attention of many a would be adventurer。 Now though, it's a little quaint with it's dated technical terms (I swear half of them are made up) and avaricious hunting and collecting。 Nemo is great, a proper symbol of vengeance。 A great period piece, but hard to take seriously A dated classicI can imagine how this scientific adventure caught the attention of many a would be adventurer。 Now though, it's a little quaint with it's dated technical terms (I swear half of them are made up) and avaricious hunting and collecting。 Nemo is great, a proper symbol of vengeance。 A great period piece, but hard to take seriously 。。。more

I've never really noticed this before, but it seems a somewhat common conceit in some older novels to have the narrator pass out during the height of action only to awaken to everything being resolved and finished。 I love "The Hobbit", but it certainly happens there just as it does here。I read this work many decades ago and found it a bit dull so I was surprised when I found myself one night holding this book in my hands with the intention of just reading the beginning。 Somehow, it hooked me jus I've never really noticed this before, but it seems a somewhat common conceit in some older novels to have the narrator pass out during the height of action only to awaken to everything being resolved and finished。 I love "The Hobbit", but it certainly happens there just as it does here。I read this work many decades ago and found it a bit dull so I was surprised when I found myself one night holding this book in my hands with the intention of just reading the beginning。 Somehow, it hooked me just enough to keep me going, though at times, I had to skim some of the overwhelming details that I just didn't care about。 At any rate, I did finish and I enjoyed it more than I expected I would though it was rough going at times。 。。。more

I'm surprised about some of the negative comments on this classic。 I really enjoyed this book, sure there is a lot of commentary on some of the marine terminology and technology, but it's of course necessary if the book is to come across as credible。If you can get over that enjoy the adventure that Captain Nemo takes you on, you'll see how exciting and intriguing this story really is。 Without going into any spoilers, I agree with the sentiments below, that this story is about Captain Nemo escapi I'm surprised about some of the negative comments on this classic。 I really enjoyed this book, sure there is a lot of commentary on some of the marine terminology and technology, but it's of course necessary if the book is to come across as credible。If you can get over that enjoy the adventure that Captain Nemo takes you on, you'll see how exciting and intriguing this story really is。 Without going into any spoilers, I agree with the sentiments below, that this story is about Captain Nemo escaping from life above sea, finding peace, tranquility but also adventure! 。。。more

I do love the style of writing common in the 19th century。 Such precise descriptive scenes, great crisp dialogue, and sincere characters。 Verne offers us a real adventure in this one。。。 despite having said that it never really grabbed me。 The adventure was just one geographical location after another like examining an atlas without too much story to make the places seem real。 Sometimes interesting comments but nothing thrilling。The book was enjoyable enough and I'm glad I read it but 3 stars is I do love the style of writing common in the 19th century。 Such precise descriptive scenes, great crisp dialogue, and sincere characters。 Verne offers us a real adventure in this one。。。 despite having said that it never really grabbed me。 The adventure was just one geographical location after another like examining an atlas without too much story to make the places seem real。 Sometimes interesting comments but nothing thrilling。The book was enjoyable enough and I'm glad I read it but 3 stars is about right。 。。。more

Twenty thousand leagues under the sea by Jules Verne is a book that follows Pierre Aronnax a marine biologists to find a monster that has been rumored to live deep in the sea。 The book is really well written the best part of the book is the world building and detail he writes about the world。 In the book he creates lots of realism using specific dates, using longitude and latitude lines to mark places。 Another example is that in the book it says "leading articles of the Geographical institution Twenty thousand leagues under the sea by Jules Verne is a book that follows Pierre Aronnax a marine biologists to find a monster that has been rumored to live deep in the sea。 The book is really well written the best part of the book is the world building and detail he writes about the world。 In the book he creates lots of realism using specific dates, using longitude and latitude lines to mark places。 Another example is that in the book it says "leading articles of the Geographical institution of Brazil, the Royal Academy of Science of Berlin, the british association" and many other real places that would have reports like this。 Using so many aspects of the real world to build up his storytelling is genius and makes me wonder if there really could be a monster like in the book。 One aspect I think the book could improve is that it is very wordy。 Using large unnecessary vocabulary is present throughout the entire book。 At some points it does increase the sense that this a scientific mission and that there is a high level of intellect but at other points it suffocates the message。 。。。more

Interesting theme and overall plot, but many parts just feel like they’re drawn on for too long。

Always captivates my imagination every time I read it! It brings me to a place untouched and a world unseen and let’s me explore。 The mystery of the captain and the differing motivations of the cast drew me into the story and kept me turning pages。 This is the first book I read as a kid and loved, so it will always have a soft spot in my heart

great novel。 The plot holds up and the writing is top notch。 Considering the era of its publication, I was impressed with the story development and the characters。 The Victorian era speech was difficult to adjust too but it fits with the story。 I look forward to reading the Mysterious Island and Journey to the Center of the Earth。

Hơi thất vọng với sách。 Không phải 1 cuộc phiêu lưu nguy hiểm, kịch tính hay hấp dẫn như mình mong đợi khi nhìn thấy bìa。 Phần đầu và phần cuối khá đỉnh, còn lại thì 。。。Tình tiết diễn biến nhanh, kết lại mở, hơi nhiều số liệu, nói chung ko hợp mình。 Btw, vẫn rất ngạc nhiên về trí tưởng tượng phong phú của tác giả, thời 18xx mà tác giả viết cứ như người hiện đại ấy, nể luôn :) Cốt truyện chắc 2 sao thôi, 1 sao còn lại là dành cho bác Jules nhé。
